Mel Hahn... 50 Years Service To Waterloo

Mr. Mel Hahn, the present owner of Hahn's Pharmacy, this week celebrates his 50th Anniversary as a druggist in the City of Waterloo. The establishment which is owned and operated by Mr. Hahn was the first Drug Store in the City.

    Interesting History

Moses Springer, the first Reeve of the Village of Waterloo in 1857 and also the first Mayor of the Town of Waterloo in 1876 started the Drug Store a century ago.

Simon Snyder joined Mr. Springer and later bought it to go into business with Mr. A. J Roos.

Mr. A. G. Haehnel obtained ownership from Mr. Roos and at that time 50 years ago Mr. Hahn came to work for him In 1949 Mr. Haehnel retired and Mr. Hahn bought the store.

    Happy Reminiscence

When interviewed by an Chronicle reporter this week, Mr. Hahn said, "When I first came here 50 years ago, we had to work under gaslight and since then I have witnessed the change from gas, to irredescent to the present modern fluorescent lighting. In those days the drug store also served as the telegraph office and I had to learn Morse Code on top of being a pharmacist. In the past, a drug store sold nothing but drugs, now it sells everything from pencils to peanuts."

    Grand Re-Opening

Besides himself, Mr. Hahn employs two other pharmacists, his son Jack and Mr. Alec MacTavish along with two girl clerks and two delivery boys.

This summer the store was completely remodeled and this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20 he is having his Grand- Re-opening with free gifts to the first 500 ladies who drop

Two Motor at Fatalities at Kitchener

Wife of Former New Hamburg Resident Killed

Two lives were lost and a third person was seriously injured in motor accidents which occurred on King street, Kitchener, on Saturday night. Albert McGruther, formerly of Parry Sound, was the first victim, and Mrs. Edward Ludwig, of 101 Wellington street, was the second. McGruther. who was riding a bicyle [sic] beside a moving van, in which be was transferring his household effects from Waterloo to Lancaster street, Kitchener, was knocked down from behind by a motor car driven by Russel Hahn of Heidelberg. Hahn is being held on a charge of manslaughter.

The second accident was the most unusual and tragic. Mrs. Edward Ludwig and her husband were knocked down from behind, when a riderless motorcyle [sic], with a side car, jumped from the pavement onto the sidewalk, crashing into the couple, killing Mrs. Ludwig almost instantaneously and seriously injuring her husband.

The cause of the accident was a crash between two motorcycles about a block east of where the other fatality occurred. William Schaefer, who was riding the motorcycle, which killed Mrs. Ludwig, was knocked from his machine by a motorcycle driven by Walter Heiser, as a result of the latter trying pass Schaefer's machine and crashing into it as he was about to pass.

Schaefer was thrown from his machine and the motorcycle going at high speed continued riderless, dashing west on King street for about 300 yards, when it leaped suddenly to the sidewalk, bowling over Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig. The cycle kept on its wild career along the sidewalk and was finally stopped. when it crashed into the new office building of the Kaufman Rubber Company at present under construction.

The stricken couple were carried into the office of Dr. Shields, which was nearby. By that time Mrs. Ludwig was dead. Mr. Ludwig was then taken to the hospital. For about two hours he was unconscious, slight concussion of the brain having resulted. He passed a bad night, but on Sunday morning had improved and examination showed that the injuries were only external. Schaefer and Heiser are being held on charges of manslaughter.

Albert McGruther, the first victim, was attended to by Dr. Hamilton, but died before reaching the hospital. He has a wife and two small children. The accident happened a few hundred yards west of the G. T. R. crossing on King St. When his bicycle was hit, McGruther was thrown onto the hood of the motor car, his head breaking the windshield. His body was then burled about 50 feet and landed in front of an approaching street car.

The late Mrs. Ludwig was formerly Miss Ethel Wagner, and was born in Kitchener on May 29th, 1893. Her father, William Wagner, died about three years ago. She was married to Mr. Edward Ludwig last February. Her husband was a resident of New Hamburg for many years, having left here for Kitchener a little over a year ago, and the entire community will sympathize with him in his sudden and tragic bereavement. Besides her stricken husband she is survived by four brothers and four sisters. Deceased was a member of Zion Evangelical Church, Kitchener, and also a member of the church choir. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon from her late home on Wellington street to Mount Hope Cemetery.

    Obituary for Betty Mae Gingrich

Peacefully on May 12, 2020 at the age of 91 years, surrounded by her loving family our angel Betty Mae Gingrich got her wings. She left us the way she lived with strength, dignity, great faith, charity, kindness, acceptance and love, so very much love.

Mom was born on January 5, 1929 in Mitchell, Ontario and at a young age the family moved to Elmira where she grew up. As a young wife and Mother she had the courage to move west to Manitoba, and after three years in Steinbach, the family settled in Gimli.

Mom lived her life to the fullest, with a sense of adventure, dedication to her family, and forward thinking. If life served up lemons, she shed a little tear, pulled herself up, made those lemons into lemonade and served it to the world.

Mom was a born teacher and taught for 32 years. She fondly remembered all of her students and you just had to mention a name and she would share a story about them that brought a smile to her face. Many of the colleagues she taught with became life long friends, with whom she shared many memories.

Mom had many passions. She was an avid knitter, knitting love in to every stitch of her Icelandic sweaters, mitts, prayer shawls and countless baby sweaters. She loved to travel, and travelled to almost every continent. She passed on her love of travel to all of us and widened our horizons to be aware of more than our little piece of the world. She played a mean game of Scrabble, beat us all at Jeopardy and could name every bird. Her mind remained sharp until the end.

Mom had great faith and truly believed in the power of prayer. She believed that through living her faith she could help the world be a better place. The fellowship and friendship of her church family were a significant part of her life.

Mom loved her family so very much. We all knew how special we were to her. She taught us how important it is to keep each other close and accept each other for who we are, and if we did this we would never be lonely or alone.

Mom is survived by her four children, Gayanne Prise, Jane (Les) Schoonmaker, Michael Gingrich, Heidi Gingrich (Dan Goray); seven grandchildren, Russell, Abby (Rob), Ian, Megan (Kyle), Ethan, Devan, Felicia (Don); and six great grandchildren, Kelsey, Shealyn, Brayden, Tripp, AJ and Silas. By her sisters Carol Stortz, Sandra (Clint) Rohr; brothers, Jack (Helen) Brown, Bill (Joyce) Brown; sisters in law Velorous (John) Shearer, Eileen Gingrich; brothers in law Virgil (Della) Gingrich, Delmar (Marguerite) Gingrich; along with countless nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

She was predeceased by her parents William and Gladys Brown; brother Howard (Mary) Brown; and sisters Jean (Walter) Hachborn, Ruth (Wolf) Fink; brother in law Cyril Stortz; parents in law Ozias and Naomi Gingrich; brothers in law Newton (Mary) Gingrich, Vernon Gingrich; sister in law Vietta (Tom) Oshiro; nephew Daryl; her children's father Gordon Gingrich; and an infant daughter.
Mom we miss you so much already. You were our rock and soft place to land. We will take so much comfort in knowing that the angels will wrap you in their loving arms and keep you safe until we meet again. For those of you who had the privilege to know her, we hope you remember her with a smile!

The family would like to thank Dr Blelloch and the nurses and staff of the Gimli Community Health Centre, the Gimli and Selkirk dialysis staff, her homecare workers, meals on wheels staff and the MAID program who all gave her excellent care and enabled her to live and die with dignity. We appreciate your kindness and care.
Thank-you to Pastor Rick Schulz of the Gimli Lutheran Church for the comfort and spiritual guidance he provided to Mom and her family.

There will be no funeral service at this time. Neil Bardal Funeral Centre in care of arrangements. Mom supported many charities, as expressions of sympathy a donation can be made to a charity of your choice in her name.

Wonderful father of Jackie (Ken) of Lindsay, Brian (Lisa) of Waterloo, Steven (Debra) of Sherkston, and Scott of Elmira. Dear grandfather of Matthew, Danielle, Zachary, Grant, Naomi, and Paige, and great-grandfather of Leia. Survived by his sister Sandra (Clint) Rohr and brother Rev. Jack was a respected businessman who co-owned and operated W.C. Brown & Sons Clothing and Tailor Shop with his brother Howard, until the mid 1980s. He also founded John G. He was a longtime, faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church in Elmira. He served his Lord by doing numerous tasks in the church, including many years as a councilman and Sunday School superintendent; but his biggest pleasure was singing in the church choir. Jack had a beautiful voice and loved music of all types. He sang duets with Jackie and was a longtime member of the Schneider Male Chorus, and the Gloryland Chorus.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral home visitation or funeral service. A celebration of Jack's life and faith will be held at a later date. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the healthcare professionals who cared for Jack so that he could remain in his home for as long as possible and to the caring and dedicated staff who looked after Jack at Columbia Forest in Waterloo. A special thank you to Jess for all your visits with him. As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. James Lutheran Church or Grand River Regional Cancer Center would be appreciated.
