Erb.--Menno G., son of the late John and Bena (Gardner) Erb, was born June 22, 1866; died at Wellesley, Ont., Oct. 18, 1932. Death was caused by pneumonia, being sick in bed for one day. He was married to Barbara Streicher Jan. 30, 1900, who preceded him Aug. 13, 1925, at Kingman, Alta. He was a faithful member of the Amish Mennonite Church, and is greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Funeral services were held from his late home by John Wagler and at the church by C. Zehr and C. Shultz. "Uncle, thou are sweetly resting, Cold may be this earthly tomb; But the angels sweetly whispered, Come and live with us at home." A Niece.

BRENNEMAN, EZRA

Peacefully, on Thursday, August 6, 1992, at his home, Country Meadows, Brunner, Ezra Brenneman, formerly of 21 Lawrence St., Wellesley. Mr. Brenneman was born in Wellesley Township 88 years ago. Son of the late Samuel Brenneman and the late Mary Eby. Ezra was a member of the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church, and had farmed at RR 1 Millbank, retiring to Wellesley in 1964. Ezra was also a well known vendor of 33 years at the Kitchener Farmers' Market. Beloved husband of the former Emma Gerber of Country Meadows, Brunner; dear father of Laura and her husband Maynard Nafziger, Norma and her husband Murray Nafziger, both of Brunner and Vernon and his wife Norma Brenneman of RR 1 Millbank. Remembered by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Brenneman of RR1 Gads Hill. Cherished grandpa of 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Menno and Dan; by three sisters, Emma Wagler, Catherine Roth and Bena Brenneman and by two grandchildren, Edward and David Nafziger. Visitation at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, 40 Henry St, Wellesley, where the family will receive friends this evening (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A family service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, August 9 at p.m. followed by the funeral service at the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Bishop Arthur Gerber will officiate. Memorials to Christian Printing Missions or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy for the late Ezra Brenneman.

Erb.-Mahlon Erb was born Dec. 13, 1908, at Wellesley, Ont., Can.; died May 10, 1934; aged 25 y. 4 m. 27 d. He leaves his father (Michael), 4 brothers, 3 sisters, and many relatives and friends to mourn his early departure. On Feb. 27, 1929, while an employee of a Construction Company, he fell, resulting in a broken back, for which he was confined in the General Hospital in Buffalo for nine months. He, however, sufficiently improved so that he was able to be up, and attended church services when health permitted, but at intervals had to return to the hospital. His last stay at the hospital was for 11 days, when the Lord called him home. In his later life he was deeply concerned for the welfare of the church, of which he became a member (Alden, N. Y. congregation) by water baptism in September, 1925. He gave sufficient testimonies that we need not mourn as those who have no hope. Funeral services were held at the Alden meeting house, May 13, conducted by the home ministers, assisted by Bro. Birky of the Sand Hill congregation.

Ezra Erb, 84, of Goshen, died Friday afternoon, June 22, 2007, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend.
He was born in Wellesky, Ontario, Canada, on December 16, 1922, to Michael and Nancy (Bast) Erb.

With the death of his mother at the age of 8, he was raised by George and Emma Schmidt. He married Barbara M. Zehr on January 1, 1946, at the New Bremen Mennonite Church in New Bremen, New York. She survives.

Mr. Erb graduated from Alden Central High School in 1941 and received his BS in 1950 from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. He retired in 1984 from Union Caribide \endash Linde Division (now Praxair) as a chemist.

He served as a US Army medic during World War II in the European Theater. He landed on Normandy at Uttica Beach in the third wave. He was shot in the leg by a German sniper while carrying a wounded soldier and later wounded in the arm by shrapnel. Mr. Erb received the Purple Heart and the Oakleaf Cluster.

He attended Waterford Mennonite Church in Goshen and was a member of the Alden Mennonite Church of Alden, New York. He was also a member of the American Chemical Society and the Compressed Gas Association.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Jack (Cindy) Erb of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Rhonda (John) Landgraf of Goshen; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Joe (Virginia) Erb of Darien, New York.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, June 27, 2007, at the Alden Mennonite Church with Rev. Phil Martin officiating.

Burial was in Union Cemetery, Alden, New York.

Memorial contributions may be given to either the Waterford Mennonite Church or Alden Mennonite Church.

She was the daughter of the late David L. Wagler and the late Catherine Erb; Mrs. Erb was a lifelong member of the Mapleview Mennonite Church. Beloved mother of Vernon of New Hamburg, Edmund of RR 2, Wellesley, Vera (Mrs. Frederick Koehler) of Kitchener, Erma (Mrs. Craig Bisset) of Kitchener; sister of Emma (Mrs. Aaron Lichti) of Wellesley, Sarah (Mrs. Amos Ropp) of Wellesley, Lavina (Mrs. Mose Lichti) of Millbank, Katie Wagler of Millbank. Ropp, Christian E - Passed away Peacefully at the Stratford Hospital on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at 11 pm, in his 89th year. Dear Husband of the late Violet (Showalter) Ropp. Father of Rudy Ropp of Brunner, and Hubert Ropp and his wife Joanna of Brunner. He will be sadly missed by his 5 grandchildren, Hadassah, Annie, Bethani, Eden and Asher. He was predeceased by his parents Menno and Nancy (Erb) Ropp, Son Menno Kalvin Ropp in infancy, and Brother-in-law Lloyd Poole. He is survived by his sister Madalena (Ropp) Poole of Wellesley and one niece and five nephews. Christian was born at home and lived on that farm his entire life except for two years as a family in Northern Ontario. He had a great passion to see people love and serve the Lord. He was also dedicated to caring for his farm and animals. He loved to tinker and fixed things and leaves behind many potential, yet unfinished projects.
He was a faithful member of Woodlawn Mennonite Fellowship in Dorking.

Visitation for both Christian and Violet will be held on Friday, September 17, 2021, from 1-3 and 5-7 pm at Woodlawn Mennonite Fellowship, 6449 Wellington Road 11, Drayton. He spent his early working days building what would become the Trans Canada highway and regaled his family for years with 'we built that bridge'. He eventually moved to Stratford, Ontario where he worked for Gaffney Construction for over 30 years, retiring in 1992. Dan was a member of the Worldwide Church of God and enjoyed reading, playing Scrabble and Solo, gardening, telling a good story, listening to music and watching the Habs dominate the Leafs. Vernon Erb hands over the president's mantle to son Wendell


NEW HAMBURG - When he started out with one truck, 52 years ago, Vernon Erb dreamed that one day he might have a small, modest fleet. Maybe five or six trucks.

Today, the Erb name crosses an entire continent. It is on hundreds of trucks and refrigerated trailers hauling food and goods to grocery stories and retailers throughout North America.

Honest, hard work and concern for customers and employees built the business, says Vernon's eldest son Wendell, who was recently named president of the Erb Group of Companies after Vernon relinquished the title.

Vernon, now 75, has been winding down his involvement in the day-to-day operations of the Erb Group since 1999, when Wendell became general manager. Handing over the presidential title now marks a more "official" retirement, although Vernon is still chair of the board for Erb Enterprises.

But retirement doesn't really mean retirement for Vernon. "He bought a farm and he is actually farming 220 acres now," Wendell says. "He still comes into the garage, but mostly to borrow tools or a mechanic."

Decency, honest hard work and caring were Vernon's trademarks. "My father knew probably everything about every customer, every employee," Wendell says. "He returned every phone call and lived and breathed the company."

The company now employs about 1,300 people, has 850 delivery trucks and power units that pull trailers, as well as 1,100 trailers and 10 refrigeration facilities between Winnipeg and Montreal.

Vernon took a huge risk but made the right move when he competed against bigger players to get the unrestricted licence he needed in 1970 to be able to carry frozen foods up and down the highways.

The deregulation of the trucking industry, starting in 1980 in the United States, further fuelled the growth of the business, Wendell says. "That allowed us to get the operating authority to truck anywhere in the United States."

Trucking is now a high-tech business, he says. "It is amazing, the information that goes back and forth via satellite."

There are many challenges ahead in the transportation industry, including trying to get reliable equipment that meets the emission standards of today, as well as trying to find enough drivers to replace the ones that are retiring.

"Our driving workforce in general is aging and we are not seeing the people come into the industry as fast as they are retiring," he adds.

But Wendell says the Erb Group has been lucky to have great employees who stayed with the company over the years.

"The loyalty of our drivers and all of our employees is something that we have been blessed with." But he says the business' success is ultimately driven by taking care of customers. That was the main lesson his father passed down.

"What he did was good old fashioned hard work and he took care of the customers. He never failed to remind us that we have to take care of them, and that was our recipe for success."
