At her late residence, just east of Crosshill, on Tuesday, June 19th, 1906, Isabella McWilliams, relict of the late John Glaister, aged 62 years, four months and three days.

Although Mrs. Glaister has been ill for the past year and for some time latterly quite low, yet her death on Tuesday …?... sorrow in the community where she has lived and been known so long. Born in Banffshire, Scotland, she came, when only five years old, with her parents to Canada, first settling in Woolwich Township, but shortly afterwards removing to Berlin where she received her public and grammar school education. When about twenty years of age she was married to the late Mr. Glaister. They moved at once to the large Glaister farm, a mile or so east of Crosshill, where she has lived ever since. Her five children are all living in this vicinity, with the exception of John, who removed to Battleford, Sask., this spring, Dr. Wm. Glaister of this village being among the number. Deceased was a member of the Crosshill Presbyterian church. She was of a quiet loveable disposition, devoting her highest duties to home and its up-building. Her remains will be laid away to rest beside her husband, who died 23 years ago, in Rush's cemetery this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock.

    _________

GLAISTER, WILLIAM was born on a farm near Crosshill on June 30, 1866, the son of John Glaister and Isabel McWilliam.

He attended Harriston High School and graduated as Gold Medallist from Trinity Medical School in 1894. He was taking postgraduate work in New York, but when Dr. William Morton of Wellesley became ill, he returned to take over that practice. He remained in Wellesley after Dr. Morton recovered, and upon his death in 1899 succeeded to the practice.

He practised in Wellesley for about fifty years and during that time was highly esteemed by the residents of that area. A heartfelt appreciation by Dr. P. L. Tye of Milverton, who often worked with him, appeared in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in May 1948 shortly after his death. It expresses some of the regard with which he was held in the community

Dr. Glaister was a typical country doctor, one of the most successful and one of the best. He could have gained fame in the larger centres but preferred to remain among the people he knew. Going through the horse and buggy days on roads that were at times impassable made him resort to snowshoes. No weather was too bad for him to reach the bedside of the needy and poor, as well as those in better circumstances.

He was a good surgeon and for many years did all his surgery in the homes where he had wonderful results. As a diagnostician he was one of the best and his advice was sought by many far and wide. Dr. Glaister was a wonderful student and always kept abreast of the times. Every spare minute he spent with his beloved books. He did not have much time or sport but in his younger days he enjoyed bowling, tennis, hunting and fishing.

The passing of Dr. Glaister has left a great sense of loss in his home community, his quiet assured manner brought comfort and confidence in the sick room, he was beloved by all and his memory will long remain in the hearts of the people of Wellesley and district.

In order to facilitate communications with his patients he put up a private telephone system extending to many of the smaller villages in the area.

He died on February 18, 1948 after an illness of some three years. He was predeceased oy his wife who was a daughter of Dr. Morton, and was survived by two daughters, one of whom, Deborah, is a physician. (She was interviewed for an oral history tape which is held by the Waterloo historical Society. The Wellesley Township Historical Society has a biography of Dr. Glaister prepared by Phyllis Kitchen. ).

    Notes:

Deborah Glaister was born in Wellesley Township in 1906 into a medical family. Her father's high expectations and diagnostic skills influenced her greatly to choose medicine over the more traditional role of nursing.

Glaister graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1932 and did post-graduate work in England. In 1936 she returned to Wellesley, Ontario to assist her ailing father with his medical practice. For several years, Dr. Debbie, as she was known, took on a busy rural caseload and she was Wellesley Township's first female physician. Her deep compassion and professionalism made her very popular with her patients.

In 1943 the recently married Glaister-Hannay joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps where she qualified as Captain. After the war Glaister-Hannay had a full medical practice as Kitchener's first female specialist. She later joined Freeport Hospital, eventually becoming the hospital's chief of staff.

In 1999, Wellesley Township honoured its first female doctor by naming a road Deborah Glaister Line.
