    WILLIAM "BILL" TALES, M. M. 1893-1980

    Married: Dorothy Barber

    William Tales was born in Leeds, England on April 5, 1893 and came to Canada in 1913. He settled first in New Hamburg with his family and came to Galt in 1919. Mr. Tales served with both the 18th Battalion and the 111th Battalion during the First World War. He was a veteran of the Canadian victory at Vimy Ridge and received the Military Medal for "conspicuous gallantry" at the battle of Passchendaele on November 10, 1917. Following the war, he established Tales' Shoe Repair which he operated for forty-six years. Known to many as "Mr. Legion", Mr. Tales was a charter member and past president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Galt Branch 121. He was also the Royal Canadian Legion zone commander and was a life member of the sergeant's mess, Highland Fusiliers of Canada. Mr. Tales died on January 10, 1980 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery.

    Grace Byatt (nee Tales), predeceased by husbands Gord Byatt (2007) and Reginald Thornton (1981). Born in Galt on July 5, 1925. Graduated Galt Collegiate. Worked at Babcock Wilcox. Married Reginald in 1947. He re-enlisted and they spent the next 25 years transferring from base to base, following his military career. After his retirement settled in Galt, in 1971. Grace worked for Babcock & Wilcox, until retiring in 1990. She was a life member of the RCL Ladies Auxiliary Br. 121 (45 years) and a Branch Member (36 years). Survived by children, Larry (Nancy Lehmann) Thornton, Linda Miles, Betty (Bill) Laidlaw and Bonnie (Earl) MacDonald, grandchildren (11), great-grandchildren (16), great-great-grandchildren (3). Predeceased by her parents, William and Florrie Tales, brothers James Tales and Lawrence Tales, one granddaughter, Tracy MacDonald and great-granddaughter, Abigail Boland, sons-in-law Ernest Harth and John Miles, daughter-in-law, Darlene Thornton, granddaughter-in-law, Lorraine. Resting at Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas St. N., Cambridge, where the family will receive friends on Thursday, January 25, 2018, from 5-8 p.m. Legion Service to take place in the Funeral Home Chapel, on Thursday, at 6 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas St. N., Cambridge, on Friday, January 26, 2018, at 1 p.m., with visitation beginning one-hour prior. Interment to follow at Mount View Cemetery.
