    Notes:

Jacob S. Shoemaker, "the eldest of John Shoemaker's children, was born April 24th, 1798. He, after quitting school, entered his father's mill where he was engaged until 1820 when he became desirous to seek his fortune in the then much-spoken-of Canada. He came to Abraham Erb, Waterloo, some time during the spring of 1820. He, being a practical miller, and just the man required to manage the grist mill of this place, remained in Abraham Erb's service as miller for nearly two years when he and William Hunsberger returned to Pennsylvania to visit their parents and friends. After making a sojourn of a few months they returned the same spring. Mr. Shoemaker again assumed the management of the Waterloo Mills. On July 2nd, 1822, he was married to Elizabeth Schneider (See Schneider record for her family history) who was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 2nd, 1802, and died in Preston, November 26th, 1876. Some time after their marriage he and his wife went home to Pennsylvania on a visit. During this visit he ordered the large clock, now in possession of his daughter, Elizabeth. His father brought it with him when he paid a visit to Canada in 1826. Some time during the year 1827 or 1828 he purchased lot No. 59, German Company's Tract and afterwards became the founder of Bridgeport. In 1829 he constructed the large dam and erected the sawmills still standing. In 1830 he erected the large roller mills now in possession of Messrs Shirk and Snider. He resided in the town of Waterloo until 1830 when he moved to Bridgeport. Here he soon became proprietor, besides the extensive mills and sawmills, of a store, woollen mills and distillery. In 1840 he built the large house now possessed by Mrs. Veronica Horst. During the great financial depression all over the province in 1851, besides other difficulties never fully investigated, he is said to have failed. He then moved to Preston to his son-in-law, Joel Clemens, from there to Blenheim Township, Oxford County, where he erected a sawmill and did a successful business. His last days were spent with his daughter, Barbara (Mrs. H. Huber of Berlin), where he died March 20th, 1875. Both he and his wife are buried in the Mennonite burial ground at the east end of Berlin. They had a family of eleven children"

As we know the Family Compact's misrule stirred up the Rebellion in 1837, and that William Lyon Mackenzie was the leader. After the clash of arms at Montgomery's tavern. near Toronto, he fled to Buffalo, N.Y., via Bridgeport. The late Allen Huber asserted.
A large reward was offered for his capture, alive or dead. and Dr. Scott of Berlin and J. U. Tyson of Bridgeport watched to seize Mackenzie. My grandfather, Jacob S. Shoemaker, a miller and Reformer at Bridgeport, And out scouts to warn Mackenzie. He was taken across the Grand River and guided to the Bush Inn near Doon. From there he reached Buffalo in safety. Jacob Shoemaker often rode over to Buffalo to consult with his leader. When local sympathizers wished to send Mackenzie a message, my grandfather placed the letter under his saddlecloth. Thus when searched at Hamilton or elsewhere nothing incriminating was found on his person

    Historic Building:
Built in 1840 by Jacob S. Shoemaker across from the mill he constructed in 1830. In 1969 the house with stone foundation and handmade brick walls was listed in fair to poor condition. The roof was framed with mortise and tenon joining. The house was a combination of Georgian proportions and classical decorations. The large dormers were reminiscent of early buildings in Pennsylvania. In 1850 the house was sold to Elias Eby together with the mill complex. The house was been renovated a number of times. The porch was removed and the house converted into a tri-plex by 1969.1a

The deceased who was well known in this eity and this part of the country, had been ill for about six years, being afflicted with effects of apoplectic stroke. The affliction became critical about week ago, and finally relief came to her long sufferings.

The deceased was 78 years 7 months and 8 days of age.

Her noble qualities and ideal womanhood endeared her to all who met and knew her, and were analogous to her motherly care and love.

There leaves to mourn the loss of a dear and devoted mother, three children, namely, Mr. Jacob S. Hett of Philadelphia. Misses Elizabeth and Marianne Hett at home, 2 Otto .. also grandchildren. Her brother and sisters who survive are Mr. Jacob Shoemaker, Miss Elizabeth Shoemaker both of this city, and Mrs. Joel Clemens of Preston. Three brothers and five sisters predeceased her. Huber was born here in 1847 and died here October 3rd last. Mr. Huber was in many respects a remarkable man, if somewhat eccentric. He was of an old Waterloo Pennsylvania German family and was Mayor of Berlin in 1908. Mr. Huber was of very material assistance in the work of this Society, and secured for us severable valuable additions to the museum, among them the Weber waggon of 1807.

    EX -MAYOR HUBER PASSES AWAY
Well-Known Citizen Died at Berlin & Waterloo Hospital.

    WAS IN 68TH YEAR

One of Berlin's oldest native-born citizens, in the person of Allen Huber, passed away at the Berlin & Waterloo hospital on Sunday morning at 5: 30 o'clock after a long and lingering illness. The deceased has been in poor health for several years and has been a patient at the hospital since last November, suffering from a complication of ailments. Up to a few days ago he was bright and cheerful but last Thursday he took a decided change for the worse and weakened rapidly. His daughter Miss H. Innis Huber, of New York, who arrived last Thursday, was at his bedside.

The deceased was born in Berlin 68 years ago, and was the second son of the late Henry Huber, who was Reeve of the then village of Berlin for six consecutive terms he attended the Public School, after which he entered his father's general store. After the death of his father he conducted the store in partnership with the late Simon Roy for some years.

He disposed of his interest in the store and took an extended trip to Japan and China. On his return he travelled for many years representing various firms in this city. He was known in the commercial world from coast to coast: During the last twenty years he has been living retired, and took a keen interest in municipal and parliamentary affairs. lie was a frequent candidate. for the Mayoralty and finally succeeded in being elected in 1908, and served one term. He was also an unsuccessful candidate for the Provincial Legislature and the Dominion Parliament on several occasions.

The late Mr. Huber was always interested in the market of this city; of which he claimed to be the chief promoter when it was commenced. When engaged in the retail business he offered prizes weekly to the farmers for the best specimens of farm produce until the farmers started to patronize the markets regularly.

The deceased was married to Hannah Roat and is survived by two-children, Oscar of the United States and Miss Innis of New York. Messrs. Charles and Edwin Huber of this city are brothers. In the death of Mr. Huber this city good friend, and while at times he was apt to be extreme in his views of public questions there was an honesty of purpose which won for the confidence of the electors of this city. He was fearless in his denunciation of any wrong-doing and stood by his convictions. During the last week of his life he stated to a member of the Telegraph staff that he had his short-comings but it was a consolation to him in his dying hours that he had tried to do his best for the masses without fear or favor. The funeral will take place on Tuesday morning from Schreiter's undertaking rooms to Mount Hope cemetery.

    Business:
In the year 1859 the grist mill was sold to Henry Aaron Bechtel who in the year 1875 sold it to Henry McNally, Angus McNally, Oliver Clemens and Moses Eschelman. This group converted the building into a woollen mill, and operated it for many years. A number of years later the machinery was sold to a North Bay concern. This building is at present utilized as an ice house, owned by F. I. Willson.

    _____________________

The first milling venture included a saw mill and grist mill,* built on the Blair-Galt Road by Daniel and Jacob Erb. Erected in 1808, it is now used as an ice house by Ford Willson of Preston. In 1859 the property was sold to Henry Aaron Bechtel who lived on the farm now owned by Jim Johannes. Here stands one of the oldest houses in the district. According to a record in the masonry it was built by the Bechtels in 1817. In 1875 the mill was transferred to Henry McNally, Angus McNally, Oliver Clemens and Moses Eschelman. This group converted the building into a woollen mill and continued in business until the manager, Angus McNally, died in April, 1903. Following that, a North Bay concern bought the establishment, then' moved all the machinery away. As a boy the writer had the pleasure of working in that woollen mill. I shall never forget the water wheel which ran all the machinery. It had timbers like those in a barn, and the steel axle upon which it was built weighed one and one-half tons. Farmers brought their w'ool to the mill and bought blankets, cloth, yarn and batting.

    Notes:

CLEMENS, Nelson Byron - FEARFULLY SUDDEN DEATH - A fearfully sudden death occurred in the Township of Waterloo on Saturday evening last. It appears that Mr. Nelson Byron Clemens, son of Joel Clemens, Esq., ex-Reeve of Waterloo, had gone over in the evening after tea, of which he partook heartily, to the residence of his brother-in-law for the purpose of having a talk, and while sitting in his chair chatting, his brother-in-law saw his head suddenly fall to one side, and that he was falling off his chair. He immediately rushed to catch him, and did so, but even then the spark of life had fled and not a movement or pulsation was left to show that the young man had ever existed. Deceased was not quite 20 years of age, had always been strong and hearty, and had never complained of anything which would indicate the existence of heart-disease, yet it is understood that it was of that he died. He was a general favorite in that part of Waterloo and the news of his death cast a gloom over the section in which he and his family resided. The funeral of the young man took place on Tuesday and was very largely attended, the many friends of this much respected family testifying in this way their sympathy with his sorrowing family.
