George Shoemaker, "was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, February 6th, 1778. On March 19th, 1799, he was married to Mary Detweiler who was born May 10th, 1775, and died September 22nd, 1850. After he was married he moved in the house situated on the west side of the Swamp Creek, towards the old school house, while his father's residence and the mill were on the east side. Here he was engaged in the woollen mills, carding, fulling and dying wool and yarns. He was a woollen manufacturer by trade. Here he resided until 1804, thence he moved to Pottstown, on old Isaac Shantz's farm, from there he, with his small family, in 1806 moved to a place where he remained for one year, thence he moved to Skippack where he remained five years. In 1812 he moved to Benjamin Reiff in Lower Salford Township, and after-wards to John Reiff where they resided until spring, 1825, when he with his wife and three sons and a daughter, namely: Jacob and wife, Daniel, Joshua, and Catharine, moved to Canada. They resided for a short time after their arrival here in this county, on old Christian Schneider's farm one mile south of Breslau. In fall of the same year they moved on the farm (lot No. 119, G.C.T.) now possessed by his son, George D. Shoemaker. Here they resided until their death. He died November 24th, 1864. They had a family of ten children"

Jacob D. Shoemaker, "the eldest son of George Shoemaker, was born on his grandfather's place near the old mills on Swamp Creek, Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, November 24th, 1799. His boyhood days were spent in assisting his father in the woollen mills, carding and dying wool and yarns. From his fifteenth to his eighteenth year he was engaged in the grist and oil mills and during the wool season he assisted his father in the carding mills. When eighteen years of age he hired himself to John Funk who during that time had the misfortune of having his dwelling destroyed by fire, Shoemaker losing all his earthly possessions except the clothing he wore at the time. After quitting at John Funk's in the fall of 1818, he obtained work for a short time in a tannery near Pottsgrove. In spring of 1819 he attended school for six weeks in Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County. During the summer he labored for six months with David Allebach, in Skippack Township, at $12 per month. He paid out his wages $50 annually to his parents until he became of age.

After having served his six months he attended school another six weeks in Lower Salford Township. His teacher's name was Mr. Borsch. This then finished his school days. In 1820 he engaged himself to Abraham Clemens where he remained for two years, receiving $80 for the first year's wages and $72 for the second year. During the year 1822 he worked for George Reiff of Skippack Township, for $80 per year. The following year he spent in working by the day among the farmers. On November 18th, 1823, he was married to Jane, daughter of Alexander Dunbar. She was raised by Jacob Merkley who resided on the Perkiomen Creek, Skippack Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. In spring of 1824 he, in company with his wife moved to Joseph Lowery in Skippack whose farm he managed for five years. He received one-third of the product of the farm as wages for his labor and management. The annual income thus derived generally amounted to about $80.

In 1829 they with their family of two children, his parents, and two of his brothers and one sister, namely, Daniel, Joshua and Catharine, moved to Canada and came to what is now Bridgeport. Here he was engaged with Jacob S. Shoemaker who had come to Canada in 1820. During the fall of 1829 he worked on the sawmills erected the same year. While engaged here he purchased pine logs from Henry Erb who resided on lot No. 58, German Company's Tract, and had them sawed during the winter and drawn on his farm where he had a small shanty put up. Into this shanty they moved in April, 1830. The year previously he had purchased his farm, being south-west half of lot No. 19, Germam Company's Tract. containing 224 acres. During his first year on this extensive farm large clearings were made and a two-story log dwelling, 24x28 feet, erected. The log barn was erected the year following. In 1851 he erected the stone dwelling now occupied by his son, Alexander, and in 1842, he put up the large frame barn still standing. He is still living and enjoying good health and has his home with his son, Alexander who resides on the old homestead. His family consisted of ten children, of whom two died in infancy."

JACOB C. SHOEMAKER,

The well-known centenarian of Berlin, Ontario, Bro. Jacob Shoemaker, died on Wednesday afternoon, March 12, 1902, at three o'clock, at the old homestead, occupied by his son, Alexander Shoemaker. The cause of death was due to old age. Bro. Shoemaker having reached the age of 102 years, 3 months, and 9 days. He had been confined to his bed for the past few months, and although he received every possible attention he passed peacefully away. Though death was not unexpected, he will be missed by those with whom he has been surrounded during the latter part of his life. Bro. Shoemaker was extremely kind hearted and the attention and the self sacrifice shown him by his children was always appreciated, and he never lost an opportunity of referring to their kindness to his friends who would visit him at his home.

Jacob D. Bro Shoemaker united with the Mennonite church in his youth and lived an exemplary life, worthy of imitation. In his last years his desire to depart and be with Christ was always strong, and can be truly said that he was homesick for heaven. A year ago he was stricken with illness, and he asked those who visited him not to pray for his recovery, but that if it pleased God, He should take him home. His conversation on temporal affairs was in later years mostly of a period of time from 1815 to 1840. The companions of his early life have all preceded him.
During the past number of years Bro. Shoemaker has been living with his son, Alexander. His family consisted of ten children, viz, Mary Ann, deceased; David, deceased; Mrs. John Shiedel, Waterloo Township, deceased; Mrs. Henry McKay, Aldborough Township, Elgin County; Geo. D., Woolwich Township; Alexander, on the homestead; Mrs. Joseph B. Snyder, Woolwich Township; Jane, deceased; Mrs. George Israel, near Williamsburg; Jacob, deceased. There are a large number of grandchildren.

The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, at one o'clock, from the old homestead, and was very largely attended. Services by Noah Stauffer from Heb. 11: 16, and A. Y. Haist from Job 5: 26 at the C. Eby M. H., Berlin. Interment in the burying ground adjoining.

Jakob D. Schumacher

Finally, the last hour has sounded for our dear, old friend, Jakob D. Schumacher. On Wednesday afternoon, he fell gently and quietly asleep, to awake again in a better world. He attained the age of 102 years, 3 months, and 9 days and although he had to keep to his bed for approximately a year because of weakness, he was still in full possession of his mental faculties and could talk about his many experiences with his family and visiting friends; which he was fond of doing. About two weeks ago, he had a stroke, and since then, he was no longer fully conscious.

The deceased was the eldest son of George Schumacher, and was born November 24, 1799 at his grandfather's place by the old mill on Swamp Creek, Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. As a youth, he helped his father in his woolen mill with stapling and dying. From his 15th to his 18th year, he worked in the meal and oil-mill, when necessary. At 18 years of age, he apprenticed himself to John Funk, whose residence burned down, whereby he lost everything, except for the clothes on his body. In the autumn of 1818, he worked for a time in a tannery near Pottsgrove.

In the spring of 1819, he attended school for 6 weeks in Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County. In the summer, he worked for 6 months for David Allenbach in Schippach Township for $12. a month. Then, he attended school in Lower Salford again for 6 weeks. With this, he finished his schooling. In 1820, he came to Abraham Clemens and worked for him for 2 years. In 1822, he worked for George Reiff in Schippach Township for $80. a year and the following year, he worked for various other farmers.

On November 18, 1823, he married Jane Dunbar, who had been raised by Jakob Merkley, who lived on Perkiomen Creek, Schippach Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1824, he and his wife moved to Joseph Lowery's in Schippach, whose farm he managed for 5 years. For this, he received one third of the produce as his wages for his labour and administration. His annual income at this place was approximately $80.

In the year 1829, he moved to Canada with his wife, 2 children, as well as 2 brothers and one sister and settled there where Bridgeport now stands. He worked there for one year for his cousin, Jakob S. Schumacher, who had come to Canada in 1820, in the saw-mill, erected in the same year. During the winter, he purchased tree-trunks from Henry Erb, on Lot 58, German Company Tract, and turned them into lumber for a small house, which he raised the following summer on his 224 acre lot #19, German Company Tract. After he had moved into the house, he set about clearing the forest, and also erected a 2-storey residence. The next year, a barn was built. The stone house now occupied by his son, Alexander, came about in 1851. The large frame barn that still stands on the place was built in 1842. His wife, with whom he had lived in a small frame house, after having passed the place on to his son, Alexander, died August 9, 1880 and since then, he had found his home with his son's family, who had given him the best of care.

His family consisted of ten children, of whom five are still living, namely: George, living near Elmira; Mrs. Joseph Schneider, Berlin; Mrs. George Israel, Williamsburg; and Mrs. H. McCoy, Bothwell. In addition to these two sons and three daughters, he is survived by 43 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild, namely, Mrs. Wm. Luke, in Bothwell.

Also, it should be mentioned, that, he often suffered from epilepsy in his younger years, which, however, he later remained free of, after he had earnestly prayed to God and had promised to fast every Good Friday, which vow he had faithfully kept, even in later years, when age weakened him. His burial took place on the previous Saturday at the Mennonite cemetery in the eastern ward, with an exceptionally large number attending. The meeting-house was crammed full. Rev. Noah Stauffer preached in German and Rev. J. Y. Haist, in English. It should also be mentioned that he was one of the few men still living, who had helped with the construction of the meeting-house built in 1834, and the last man whose funeral service was held in it. Yesterday, on Wednesday, the demolition of the building was begun, in order to make room for a new, bigger House of God, to be built in the course of the coming summer.

100 Years Old

That which is granted only to relatively few mortals, namely: to attain the age of 100 years, was granted on Friday to Mr. Jakob D. Schumacher, who resides with his son Alexander, about three miles south of Berlin. In celebration of the day, many relatives and friends from near and far had gathered to wish the old gentleman much happiness on his day of celebration. During the day and evening, probably two hundred people carried out this affectionate duty. Fifty to sixty people shared in the noon dinner. His children, and his children's children honoured him with a giant bouquet of 100 white roses, tastefully arranged, as well as a speech wishing him well. There were also other floral offerings received, even one from Rochester, N.Y.

The old gentleman was happy and well. He is still in possession of his mental faculties, and although he is somewhat hard of hearing and his eyesight is weak, he recognized immediately most of the friends congratulating him. Those whom he did not recognize, he recalled as soon as their names were given. A quartet, consisting of the gentlemen. A.L. Breithaupt, H.S. Hallmann, A.B. Devitt, and J.A. Wiederhold, from Zion Church, came that evening and delighted the celebrants with the performance of several lovely songs.

Jakob D. Schumacher was born November 24, 1799, as the oldest son of George Schumacher, on his grandfather's farm near the old mill on Swamp Creek in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. On November 18, 1823 he married Jane Dunbar, daughter of a Scotsman, Alexander Dunbar by name. She had been raised by a German farmer, Jakob Merkley by name, in Schippach Township. In the spring of 1824, he moved to Joseph Lowery's farm in Schippach and worked on it for five years. As pay for his work, he received one third of the harvest. His annual income amounted to approximately $80.

In 1829, he came to Canada with his wife, and two children as well as two brothers and a sister and settled on the spot where Bridgeport now stands. He worked on the very spot where the sawmill of his cousin, Jakob S. Schumacher, had been constructed. The latter had arrived in 1820. He purchased several pine logs from Henry Erb, who lived on Lot Number 58, German Company Tract, and had them sawed up into boards. On the south-west half of Lot Number 10, German Company Tract, which contained 224 acres, which he had purchased in the meantime, he built a shack into which he moved in April 1830. In the first year, a considerable section of the forest was cleared and a two-storey log house was built. A log barn was built the following year. The large barn which now stands on the spot was erected in 1842 and the stone house in 1851.

When he passed the farm on to his son Alexander, he had a frame house built for himself and his wife. Since the death of his wife approximately 19 years ago, he has lived with his son Alexander, where he receives the best of care. Several years after he had settled down in the forest, he developed epilepsy, which occurred so often that he could not be left alone. For about fifty years, he has been free of this torment. He attributes this to the vow he made then, not to eat anything on Good Friday, which he has conscientiously held to ever since.
His descendants consist of two sons and three daughters, 38 grand-children and 42 great-grandchildren, who all are lovingly devoted to the "old Gross Dady" and wish him a good and peaceful old-age, in which the "Journal" also joins in.

John Shoemaker, "second son of George Shoemaker, was born in the old Shoemaker residence situated on the north side of the Swamp Creek, near the old carding and fulling mills, in Frederick Township Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, December 26th, 1800. He learned the shoemaking trade with Abraham Harley of Towamencin. On October 12th, 1823, he was married to Catharine, daughter of Henry and Mary (Heller) Fried. She was raised by old Jacob Clemens. After they were married they moved to George Clemens' in Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. On May 10th, 1825, he, with his wife and son Jacob, his brother George, Jacob and George Clemens and their families, Charles Mohr, Martin Schiedel, Henry Clemmer and family, Henry Moyer and family, Jacob Kolb, and others, left for Canada and arrived at Preston on the 1st of June following. John Shoemaker moved on the farm known as "Bill Moyer's Place", near Berlin, now possessed by Isadore B. Snyder. Here they lived for two years then they moved on west side of Jacob Y. Shantz's saw mill pond, in Joseph Eby's house. This house was previously occupied by Henry Clemmer who had moved to Preston. On February 20th, 1829, they left here and moved on their farm one mile north of Breslau. Here he still resides with his son, George F. On this farm, lot No. 107, Horning's Tract, there were several acres cleared and a small log house erected in fall of 1828. The old house was about 150 yards south-east from the present residence. Here they raised a family of eight children. She died December 25th, 1879."

SHOEMAKER. - John D. Shoemaker was born in Montgomery Co., Pa., December 26th 1800, was married to Catherine Fried, Oct. 12th 1823, emigrated to Waterloo Co., Canada in 1825, lived in matrimony 56 years, his wife dying about 16 years ago. He died on the 30th of September 1895, aged 94 years, 9 months and 4 days. His posterity numbers 8 children (4 sons and 4 daughters) of whom 6 survive him; also 66 grandchildren, 102 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. The funeral services, conducted by Daniel Wismer and S. Stauffer, were largely attended.

In the fall of the same year he engaged himself to Jacob Clemens who had selected as his home the farm situated on the west side of the Grand River, opposite Breslau, now occupied by Joseph Cressman. Here he was one year. The next five years he spent in "chopping and logging" (clearing land) for various parties within this township. In 1828 he purchased his farm, being part of lot No. 119, German Company's Tract, from old Samuel Bricker (formerly owned by old Hannes Eby), at the following rates, one hundred acres at $3 per acre and thirty-one acres at at $2 per acre. On June 8th, 1830, he was married to Anna Shuh who was born December 31st, 1808, and died August 20th, 1895. Soon after their marriage they moved on their farm where he still resides. He is now past 94 years of age. His family consisted of ten children"

Shoemaker - On the 8th of December 1897 at his home near Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., of the infirmities of old age, Bro. George Shoemaker, aged 94 years, 2 months and 3 days. Bro. Shoemaker was the third son of George Shoemaker, and was born on the homestead of his grandfather Jacob Shoemaker in Frederic Twp., Montgomery Co., Pa., Oct. 5, 1803. In his youth he worked at the loom for William Kratz of Upper Salford Twp. In 1825, in company with Jacob and Abraham Clemens and their families and others he emigrated to Canada, and for a while worked at his trade, that of weaver. Later he made his home with Jacob Clemens on the west side of the Grand River near Breslau. He afterward bought a farm two miles east of Berlin, on which he spent the remainder of his long life. On the 8th of June 1830 he was married to Anna Shuh, who died Aug. 20th 1895. He united with the Mennonite church in his youth, and was a faithful member. To them were born ten children, several of whom preceded their father. A number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren remain to mourn the loss of a kind grandparent. The remains were laid to rest in the C. Eby graveyard, Berlin, on the 11th of December, followed by an immense concourse of relatives and friends. Funeral services by E. S. Hallman in English from 1 Pet. 1: 3,4, and by Noah Stauffer in German from Prov. 12: 28.

WOOLWICH PIONEER DEAD

After a protracted illness there passed away early this morning another of the pioneers of Woolwich township in the person of George Shoemaker. Deceased suffered a paralytic stroke five years ago, which undermined his previously robust health and from which he never fully recovered. About a year ago his condition became worse and he gradually lost strength until the end came.

The subject of this sketch was born on a farm near Berlin in 1834. In 1857 he was married to Magdalena Snyder. They moved to the northeastern part of Woolwich a couple of years later and resided there continuously until the present time. Deceased is survived by his sorrowing widow, eight children, 32 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and three sisters.

The children are: - Benjamin, Elmira; Jacob, Pilkington; Joseph, on the old homestead; Jane (Mrs. Jacob O. Dreisinger), east of Elmira; Noah, north of Floradale, Ephraim, Pilkington; Katie (Mrs. Elias M. Brubacher), near St. Jacobs; Rachel (Mrs. Noah Lichty), near Floradale.

The funeral will take place on Saturday forenoon, 9: 30 o'clock, to the Mennonite cemetery north of Floradale.

MRS. GEORGE ISRAEL.

Magdalena Shoemaker, wife of Mr. George Israel of Kitchener, passed away at her home on Sanday after an illness of about one year. Deceased was 73 years of age, being born in Waterloo Township, January 16th. 1844. Mrs. Israel was well known in this city and the news of her death will be received with extreme regret among a wide circle of friends. She is survived by one sou and five daughters, Urias of Kitchener, Mrs. J. H. Shafer of Guernsey, Sask.. Mrs. E. S.. Liebler of Brown City, Mich.. Mrs. H. Dubrick, Mrs. N. Shafer and Miss Emma Israel all of this city. One sister, Mrs. Joseph Snyder of this city also survives.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the residence and later from Zion Evangelical Church where services will be held. Interment will be made at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Jacob Shoemaker.

This aged citizen is a familiar figure here daily as he now lives a retired life with his daughter, Mrs. David B Letson. Mr. Shoemaker has experienced the vicissitudes incident to pioneer life. He commenced married life in bush in 1849 with Miss Veronica, daughter of the late Benjamin Snider. At that time he was in the twenty-fifth year of his age. They had seven children born to them, six of whom are still living. The mother died October 18, 1895. The father of the subject of this sketch was the late John D. Shoemaker, of near Breslau, who was born in Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, in 1800 lacking two months of being ninety-five years of age. The wife of the latter was also born in Montgomery county, Pa., the year of her birth being 1823, and her death occurred about twenty years ago. Mr. Shoemaker, the subject of this sketch, is enjoying life in his declining years, being amply provided for in this particular by the proceeds of his farm, lot No. 129, consisting of 150 acres, near the village.

Wahl. - Sarah Shoemaker was born in Waterloo twp., Ont., Mar. 12, 1840; died at the home of her son, Breslau, Ont., Jan. 20, 1924; aged 83 y. 10 m. 8 d. In 1857 she was united in marriage to Isaac Bingeman, who predeceased her in 1864. To this union were born 4 children, two dying in infancy. In 1873 she was married to Henry B. Wahl, who died in 1904. To this union were born six children, all of whom survive. She leaves 8 children, 21 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Sister Wahl united with the Mennonite Church in the year 1864 and remained a loyal, faithful member until death. The funeral was held on Jan. 23, 1924, at the Cressman Mennonite Church, conducted by Bro. Oscar Burkholder. Text, Col. 1: 12,13.

Shoemaker. - Jacob Shoemaker was born at Berlin (now Kitchener), Ont., on June 15, 1859; died at Floradale on Oct. 17, 1917; aged 58 y. 4 m. 2 d. He was married to Barbara Wideman on Mar. 5, 1882. This union was blessed with four children and one child was adopted. He leaves to mourn four children. Bro. Shoemaker had undergone an operation a week previous to his death, not expecting that the end would be so soon. When he realized that his end was near he called his family to his bedside and earnestly admonished them to live true Christian lives that they all might meet again in the glory world. Bro.Shoemaker was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church, was of a quiet, unassuming disposition but left to us a very bright testimony. He found much consolation in the words of our Savior, Jno. 14: 1, 2. Funeral services were conducted at North Woolwich Church, Waterloo Co., Ont., by Abraham Gingerich and Oliver D. Snider. His body was laid to rest in adjoining cemetery.

Shoemaker, -- Joseph, was born on the Shoemaker homestead Feb. 10, 1862, and resided there until death, April 15, 1951; aged 89 y. 3 m. 5 d. Death was caused by Various physical disorders. In March, 1886, he married Eliza Burkhardt, who died in November, 1916. To this union were born 2 sons (Israel, living on the home farm, and Edwin, who died at birth). In December, 1919, he was united in marriage to Lovina Snider, who died in May, 1930. In his early manhood he united with the Mennonite Church and later became a charter member of the Floradale Mennonite Church where he remained a faithful member until death. The three and one-half years he regularly attended the Bethel Mennonite Church. He leaves to mourn 1 son and daughter-in-law, 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 3 sisters (Jane-Mrs. Jake Dreisinger, Elmira, Ont.; Katie-Mrs. Dilman Brubacher, St. Jacobs, Ont.; and Rachel-Mrs. Noah Lichty, Floradale, Ont.), and many relatives and friends. Services were held at the Floradale Mennonite Church May 17, in charge of Newton L. Gingrich, assisted by O. D. Snider and Rufus Yutzi. Burial was made in the North Woolrich Cemetery.

MRS. JANE DREISINGER

Mrs. Jane Dreisinger, 89, of 12 James St., died Sunday at her home. Born in Woolwich township June 30, 1865, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Shoemaker. She attended St. James' Lutheran Church, Elmira.

Surviving are five sons, Edwin, Allan and Irvin of Elmira, Emmanuel of Toronto and Jacob of Kitchener; two daughters, Elvina of Elmira and Mrs. William (Amelia) Brubacher of Elmira; two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Lichty of Floradale and Mrs. Katle Brubacher of St. Jacobs district; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jacob Dreisinger, died in May, 1942.

The funeral was at St. James' Church Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery with Rev. H. W. Baetz officiating.

Shoemaker.-Noah, was born near Floradale, Ont., March 27, 1867; died May 18, 1943; aged 76 y. 1 m. 21 d. On Feb. 1, 1891, he married Sarah Burkhardt. Two sons were born to this union, Ervine, residing on the homestead, and Amos in Kitchener. Surviving are his wife, 2 sons, 5 grandchildren, a brother (Joseph), and 3 sisters (Mrs. Jane Dreisinger, Mrs. Dilman Brubacher, and Mrs. Noah Lichty). "Mrs. Edith Quickfall, 76, of 101 David St., died Tuesday at KW Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Kitchener March 20, 1882, she was a dau. of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Shoemaker. She was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Mrs. Quickfall was predeceased by her husband, A.C. Quickfall, Nov. 15,1928, and one son, Richard, in April 1943.

Surviving are one son, Clark of Kitchener; four daughters, Miss Evelyn Quickfall and Mrs. Harold (Ellen) Berlet of Kitchener, Mrs. Wallace (Pearl) Simms of Mimico and Mrs. Arthur (Eileen) Dahms of Waterloo; two sisters Miss Susannah Shoemaker and Mrs. Louisa Latsch of Kitchener. SNYDER. - On the 7th of March, 1891 in Waterloo Co., Ontario, of intermittent fever, Allan Snyder, aged 30 years, 10 months and 4 days. Buried on the 10th in the graveyard at Eby's church, Berlin, whither his remains were followed by a large concourse of friends. He leaves a sorrowing wife with three little children to mourn his early death. May a kind heavenly Father comfort and strengthen the bereaved widowed sister in this her deep affliction that she may put all her trust in her God who has promised to be a husband and protector to the widow. Funeral services in German by S. R. Knechtel from Matt. 24: 44 and in English by Peter Cober from Mark 8: 36. This death is another earnest appeal to all not to neglect the salvation of the immortal soul until death faces the victim and claims him as his own, whether prepared or unprepared.

Norman Snyder, 91 of RR 2, West Montrose, died Wednesday, July 31 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born near Winterbourne, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Snyder and spent his entire life in the Winterbourne district.

His wife, the former Lydian Wideman, predeceased him in 1950.

Surviving are three sons, Roy, Edgar and Irvin all of RR 2, West Montrose; four daughters, Olive Snyder of RR 2, West Montrose. Verna of Kitchener, Mrs. Willard (Orell) Schwindt of Mount Forest and Mrs. Audrey Behling of Kitchener. Nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also aura Ave. One daughter, two brothers and two sisters predeceased him.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira. The funeral was conducted in the chapel Friday. Burial was in Bloomingdale Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. A. L. Evans of Wesley United Church, Elmira, officiated.

PUBLIC MEN OF WOOLWICH TOWNSHIP

ALEXANDER S. FORBES, Reeve of Woolwich Township, was born in Woolwich. in 1874. He followes the occupation of farming. Mr. Forbes was councillor from 1915 to 1921 inclusive, deputy reeve from 1922 to 1923, reeve, 1926 and 1927, and in 1927 the highest honor in the gift of the County Council was conferred upon him when he was elected Warden.

NORMAN S. SNYDER, born in Woolwich Township in 1872, follows the occupation of farming. Township councillor 1914 to 1918 inclusive, deputy reeve in 1919, 1920 and 1921, 1926 and 1927. He has been a public school trustee for fifteen years.

ALMON SNIDER, who was born in Woolwich Township in 1876, received his education in the Public Schools. He is a farmer by occupation and has been a councillor for two years.

WILLIAM S. HEMMERICH was born in Woolwich Township in April, 1881, and is a farmer by occupation. He has been township councillor since January 1924.

WILLIAM G. VEITCH was born at Winterbourne in 1889. He received his education in the Public Schools and continued his studies at the Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate. His occupation is farming and he has been a township councillor for two years.

W. J. SNIDER, late clerk of the township of Woolwich, was born in Conestogo in 1869. On May 30, 1905, he was appointed clerk of Woolwich Township. He bought out the interests of his father, Menno....

Mrs. Samuel Letson, (nee Mary Shoemaker), passed away at her home, one mile south of West Montrose on Sunday, Jan. 21. Deceased had resided in that district for over 52 years. She was a member of the United Church. The funeral was held on Wednesday, Jan. 24, with service at the home and then to West Montrose United Church. Rev. A. W. Fosbuary officiated. Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery. Surviving are her husband, one son, Byron of Conestogo, three daughters, Mrs. Walter Knarr, Conestogo, Mrs. Nancy Lasby and Miss Addie Letson. Four grandchildren also survive.

Sad Death of Mrs. Sittler

Struck by Passenger Train at Letonia, Ohio, and Almost Instantly Killed - Her Companion's Miraculous Escape.

A correspondent from Letonia, Ohio sends the following particulars regarding the death of Mrs. Moses Sitler, formerly Rachael Shoemaker of Breslau.

Announcement of her death reached here a few days ago, but there were no particulars, which are now supplied.

Friday afternoon this village was greatly shocked when the sad news that Mrs. Moses Sitler had been killed at the Mill street crossing, by the afternoon west bound passenger train, known as No. 31, and due here at 3.44 p.m., flashed to the ears of everybody. The following is the account as gleaned from good authority:

Mrs. Sitler, in company with a neighbor lady, Mrs. Jonas Shantz, had spent the day at the home of a friend, Mrs. Wm. Spink, in Midway, and had a very pleasant time, Mrs. Sitler being of a very cheerful disposition.

These two ladies reached the Mill street crossing just east of town, where Mrs. James Gaughan met the same fate a few weeks ago, in safety. The track was blockaded by a passing eastbound freight train which was loaded with cattle. Mrs. Sitler stepped on the outside plank of the west bound passenger train track to wait until the freight passed. This was on the east side of Mill street. Mrs. Shantz stood a little back of her and to the west, both being too close to the track for safety, a thoughtless act. The attention of both was taken up with looking at the cattle, and neither heard the on rushing passenger train which whistled wickedly, the noise of the freight deadening the sound. Another freight was standing on a nearby siding and a brakeman, seeing the danger, screamed a warning a number of times. Mrs. Sitler seemed to step back for a moment, and he thought she heard, but it is thought it must have been a movement made in her conversation with Mrs. Shantz, as the latter states nothing was heard until the train struck Mrs. Sitler. She was thrown thirty feet against the fence at the cattle guards on the west side of Mill street and landed on her face in the gutter there.

When she was struck she was thrown violently against Mrs. Shantz who was thrown off her feet and stunned for a second or so. As soon as she could collect her thoughts she began to wonder if Mrs. Sitler was under the cars and discovered her at the above named place. She hastened to her and soon other persons were on the scene. David Peppel who was aiding Sylvanus Peppel in raising the plaining mill recently purchased by Emmet Morgan, saw the woman hurled, was first to the rescue. He was closely followed by Sylvanus Peppel and Bartley Strouse. The victim was turned over and Dr. McCready was hastily summoned, but the victim only drew a couple of breaths before the end came and had expired before the doctor arrived, a deep gash on her forehead was the only mark on the face and it is thought every bone in her body must have been broken. A large crowd had assembled by this time.

The remains of Mrs. Sitler were put on the train and taken to the Pennsylvania freight depot where they lay until a stretcher could be secured from Crowell's undertaking rooms. Here the heart-rending scene of father and son took place, many leaving the place, the scene was so sad. Mr. Sitler was at work at the Cherry Valley furnace and when he learned that a woman had been killed the thought flashed through his mind, "That's my wife." The son, who attends the Salem business college, was home only a few minutes when the sad news came.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock from the English Lutheran church, her pastor, Rev. H. A. Rinard, officiating and taking as his text, Stop! Look! Listen!" the funeral was very largely attended, every seat in both annex and auditorium being occupied. The flowers were many and beautiful. Interment was in the Mennonite cemetery east of town, eside her little son, who died quite a number of years ago.

Deceased was born in Breslau, Ontario, Canada, on May 5, 1859, and was the daughter of John Shoemaker and wife, her maiden name being Raechel Shoemaker. She was one of a family of ten children, she making the third that is deceased, with her parents, the two others being boys who died in their youth. She was married to Moses Sitler of the same place on December 25, 1884. They came to the United States and to this village on February 28, 1885, where they have resided ever since, at one time living on the old Yoder farm, in Midway. She visited her home in Canada generally every two years until the death of her parents. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Sitler, John Milton, who was born February 9, 1886, and who died September 1889, and John aged about 20. Deceased was aged 49 years, 9 months and 21 days at the time of her death. Besides the husband and her son she leaves the following brothers and sisters to mourn their loss: Mrs. Frank Wilson of Chatham, Canada; Mrs. C. W. Sweet and son Perry, Miss Bella Shoemaker, John and Reuben Shoemaker of Buffalo; Mrs. Enock Shantz of Walkerton, Ontario, and Miss Mazie of Toronto, Can., all of whom with the exception of the latter two were present at the funeral.
