    Elias S. Brubacher, "the third member of the above family, was the only one of his father's family who settled in Canada. When a young man he came to Waterloo County, Ontario, and settled about three miles east of Breslau. On March 16th, 1844, he was married to Sarah Ariss who was born November 3rd, 1824 and died December 5th, 1886. He was born September 18th, 1814, and died May 9th 1874. Their family consists of nine children"

They reside on part of his father's homestead near Shantz Station where he is engaged in farming. Mr. Brubacher's family consists of six children, of whom three were born unto his first wife.."

    Brubacher    .-.John A. Brubacher died at his home on the Kitchener-Guelph Highway, in Ontario, Nov. 28, 1937, after a brief illness, aged 93 y. 8 m. 17 d. He was a son of the late Elias and Sarah Brubacher, was born in Waterloo Tp., March 11, 1844,and farmed in the neighborhood of his birthplace his entire life. Aug. 14, 1864, be was united in marriage to Mary Jane Mayer who predeceased him on Dec. 25, 1871. On Oct. 15, 1872, he was again united in marriage to Hannah Cook, who passed Oct. 15, 1921. He is survived by his 2 sons (Cyrus of Victoria, B. C., and Jacob at home); also 4 brothers and 1 sister (Franklin and Henry A. Brubacher of Kitchener and David and Elias of Didsbury, Alta., and Mrs. A. Stauffer of Preston). Two grandchildren also survive. He was predeceased by 3 daughters and 1 son. The funeral was held from his late residence to the Cressman Mennonite Church, Breslau,. Ont., for services, and adjoining cemetery for burial. Minister in charge, Oscar Burkholder.     Funeral services for the late Mrs. Susannah Shantz were held at the M.B.C. Church on Saturday, December 15. The services were in charge of the Pastor, Rev. F. Vincett, Didsbury, assisted by Rev. C.J. Hallman and Rev. A. Traub.

    A large number of friends gathered to show their respect to the departed. A solo, "Asleep in Jesus," was rendered by Rev. C.J. Hallman, and at the graveside a hymn, "We Are Going Down The Valley One By One," was sung. Interment was made in the Didsbury cemetery.

    Pallbearers were: N.B. Snyder, Amos Weber, Ezra Sherick, Oliver Stauffer, Allen Hunsperger, and Elah Shantz.

    Mrs. Susannah Brubacher Shantz was born at Shantz Station, near the village of Breslau, Waterloo County, Ontario, on October 30, 1847, and died on December 11, 1931, at the Didsbury Hospital after a lingering illness of six months, borne with Christian fortitude, and during which time she received the best medical attention and the care of competent nurses.

    She was the second eldest daughter of the late Elias and Shara (Ariss) Brubacher family. In 1863 she was united in marriage with the late Elias Shantz.

    To this union were born six children, three of whom still survive: Sarah (Mrs. Detwiller), of Farrington, Michigan; Ida (Mrs. Petrie) and Elijah, both of Calgary. Three children predeceased the late Mrs. Shantz: Jeremiah, Leah and Rose. Five brothers and one sister also survive, two of whom, David and Elias Brubacher, reside in Didsbury.

    There are 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, still living. The deceased also leaves a host of friends to mourn her loss.

    The late Mrs. Shantz came to Alberta in 1903 and had since lived in this vicinity, for a number of years before her death living in Didsbury. She was a member of the M.B.C. Church, with which she and her late husband were connected since the earliest years of its inception.

    "Henry A. Brubacher of Edna St. died at a Guelph hospital to day after a brief illness at theage of 95 years. A Waterloo Tp. native, he was a s/o the late Mr. and Mrs. Elias Brubacher. He was the oldest charter member of the Alma St.United Brethren Church and was formerly Sunday school superintendent for many years.

    Surviving are four sons, Homer and Wilbur of Kitchener, Sheldon of Toronto and Lyman of Minneapolis; two brothers, Franklin of Kitchener and David of Didsbury, Alta.; one sister, Mrs. Agnes Stauffer of Preston; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Louisa Bowman, and one son, Morgan...."

    Return To Girlhood Church Highlights 94th Birthday

    A return trip to the church which she remembers visiting as a little girl highlighted a birthday celebration yesterday for Mrs. Agnes Stauffer, who today celebrates her 94th birthday.

    A hymn sing in the white frame church at the Pioneer Village, Doon, highlighted the visit and was enjoyed by about 40 relatives who had attended a birthday supper in the village.

    Mrs. Stauffer gazed about the church with its wooden beams and no ceiling, its hand-made wooden benches, and old black stoves. On the front wall of the church is painted a brown fringed scroll with the golden inscription, "The Lord Be With You."

    The service in the church was held at the request of Mrs. Stauffer. It added spiritual significance to the celebration for her and brought back many memories.

    The 103-year-old church stood for a century at Freeport and was donated to the village three years ago by the United Church of Canada.

    Mrs. Stauffer did not visit the church too often for travel was difficult when she was a child. She remembers well, getting from Breslau across the Grand River by way of Bridgeport, as there was no Breslau bridge.

    Born on a farm on the Kitchener- Guelph highway, she is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elias Brubacher. She spent her girlhood in this county and then lived in Cincinnati, Ohio for 30 years. There she married Addison Stauffer, whom she had known as a child.

    For about 15 years she lived in Preston as a companion-housekeeper for the family of the late Thomas Yates. Since last. September she has been a resident of the Sunnyside Home for the Aged in Kitchener.


    Mrs. Stauffer is the oldest resident of the home. Last month she shared an honor with the oldest male resident and cut the ribbon at the ceremony for the opening of a newly furnished Common Room. This room has been provided especially for the entertainment of guests and
    Mrs. Stauffer is looking forward to having her share of visitors there.

    After being a member of St. Paul's United Church, Preston for many years, she recently transferred her membership to Christ the King United Church, Kitchener. Her minister, Dr, B. L. Oaten, conducted the church service last night. Mrs. Clayton B. Eby of Freeport played the organ. The birthday party was arranged by a nephew, Wilbur Brubacher and Mrs. Brubacher of RR 3, Kitchener.
