    John Stachle

    After an illness of six weeks John Stachle died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Gross, 84 West Ahrens Street at the age of 85 years, 10 months, and 19 days. Mr. Stachle was a retired painter and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wellesley. He was born in Wellesley in 1844 and married Fredericka Hohnstein, who died in 1903. He is survived by eight sons, George Stachle, Kitchener, Charles Stachle, Wellesley, Alexander Stachle, Kitchener, Fred Stachle, Pennsylvania, Edward Stachle, Wellesley, Albert Stachle, Hamilton, John Stachle, Waterloo and Theodore Stachle, Waterloo, two daughters, Mrs. William Gross, Kitchener, and Mrs. A. Thoms, St. Jacobs. Also 32 grandchildren, one great grandchild, and two sisters. One son predeceased him. The public funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 pm at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wellesley, and interment will be made at the Wellesley Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. Mr. Kraemer of Wellesley will officiate. The remains will be resting at the Schreiter Funeral Home until Sunday at 1:30 pm, when they will be taken to Wellesley for the services.

    George H. Stahle, 76, of 23 Cedar St. North, Apartment A, well known painter and interior decorator here for many years, died last night in K-W Hospital Annex after a long illness. He was a native of Wellesley. He attended Olivet Evangelical Church. In 1903 he married Caroline Ruppel, who survives. He is survived by four sons, Lloyd and Irvin, of Kitchener; Wilfred, of Conestogo; Richard, of Haney, B.C. ; six daughters, Mrs. Stuart (Pearl) McCarley, Mrs. Adolph (Arlene) Sell, Mrs. Harry (Edna) Jonas, Helen Stahle, all of Kitchener; Esther Stahle, of Hamilton and Mrs. Milton (Bernice) Demeuleneare, of Bridgeport; five brothers, Charles, of Wellesley; John, of Waterloo; Alex and Albert, of Kitchener, and Fred, of Erie, Penn; two sisters, Mrs. William Gross, of Kitchener; Mrs. Alvin Thoms, of St. Jacobs, and 10 grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 3: 30 p.m. Saturday, at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home. Rev. G.F. Barthel of Waterloo, will officiate, and burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Waterloo.

    WELLESLEY-Charles W. Stahle, 78, died today at his home here. Born in December, 1876, he was a son of the late John Stahle and his wife, the former Frederica Hohenstein. He was a blacksmith for over 62 years. He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church here.
    Surviving are a son, Arthur of Detroit; a daughter, Mrs. Delton (Florence) Bergey of Wellesley; three brothers Fred of Ohio, John of Waterloo and Bertram of Hanover; two sisters, Mrs. Alvin Thomas of St. Jacobs and Mrs. William Gross of Kitchener. There are four grandchildren. His wife, the former Florence Djngwall and four brothers predeceased hi.
    The body will be at the Futher Funeral Home until Monday at one p.m., when removal will be made to First St Paul's Lutheran Church where the funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Rev. Walter Heinze will officiate. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

    Mrs. Alvin Thoms, 81, of St. Jacobs, died at K-W Hospital Wednesday following a lengthy illness.

    Her maiden name was Elizabeth Stahle. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Stahle of Wellesley. Mrs. Thoms was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, St. Jacobs, and an honorary member of the Lutheran Church Women. She was a Sunday school teacher for a number of years and a former member of the choir and sewing circle. She also belonged to St. Jacobs Women's Institute.

    She had resided in St. Jacobs since her marriage to Mr. Thoms in Wellesley in 1910.

    Surviving besides her husband, are one son, Murschell of Kitchener, two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Elfrieda) Schlitt and Mrs. George A. (Mildred) Martin, both of St. Jacobs; one brother, Albert Stahle of Hanover; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

    Two sons predeceased her, Jerold in 1922, and Roland who was killed in action with the Canadian Forces in Sicily in 1943. He is believed to have been the only St. Jacobs serviceman killed in the Second World War. One sister and eight brothers also predeceased her.

    The body rested at the Dreisinger Funeral parlor, Elmira, until Saturday at 11 am when removal was made to St. James' Church, St. Jacobs, for the funeral service at 2 pm. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. Adolph Kappes officiated.

    Wilfred (Bill) Stahle - 1908-2008 - Wilfred passed away at Heritage House, in St. Jacobs, on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at age 100 years and 5 months. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Ada (nee Schaefer) in 1989. Survived by his children, Jean Uhrig and her husband George of Conestogo, Wayne and his wife Bertha of Waterloo, Carol Allendorf of Kitchener and her friend Bob Ballantine, Bruce and his wife Priscilla of the Philippines, and Jim and his wife Anne of Picton. Lovingly remembered by 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Also survived by his sisters, Edna Johnston of Waterloo and Bernice DeMeuleneare and her husband Milt of Kitchener. Besides his wife, Wilfred is predeceased by parents, George and Caroline (Rumpel) Stahle; brothers Lloyd, Irvin and Richard; and sisters, Pearl, Helen, Esther and Arlene. Wilfred was a reservist with the 24th Field Ambulance e. He retired from merchant's Rubber in a supervisory capacity after 44 years of service. He was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church, Waterloo and a member of the Glenrose Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He was a avid outdoorsman, loving fishing, hunting and cottaging on Georgian Bay. He loved watching sports and playing pool. Relatives and friends are invited to share memories of Wilfred during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 from 7-9 pm and on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 from 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 445 Anndale Road, Waterloo, on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 11 am with Rev. James Brown officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. A private family interment will follow at Memory Gardens, Breslau.

    PRIVATE ROLAND WILLIAM THOMS

    In the early morning hours of 10 July 1943 Canadian troops landed on the southwest shore of the Pachino peninsula in the southeastern corner of Sicily. The assault troops of 1 Canadian Infantry Division were assigned several key missions that day, beyond getting ashore and clearing the beach defences. First, they were to capture Italian coastal defence artillery batteries within range of the landing beach to protect the invasion fleet. Royal Navy warships bombarded and temporarily suppressed enemy heavy guns during the assault, but it was up to the infantry to capture or and destroy those gun batteries. The second task was to secure enemy airfields in the invasion area to deny their use to the enemy and free them for Allied aircraft. Finally, the assault troops needed to consolidate their positions ashore in order to meet expected Axis counterattacks. The thin screen of Italian coastal defence units the Canadians met on D-Day were meant to delay and disorganize the invasion force as it came ashore and warn counterattack forces of the landing location. The Canadians accomplished their D-Day mission at a cost of seven killed and twentyfive wounded. One of the first men killed was Private Roland William Thoms. Thoms was one of three members of the Royal Canadian Regiment killed during their attack on a pair of Italian shore batteries and Pachino airfield. The airfield was surrounded by a defensive pillbox and bunker network. Private Roland William Thoms was killed when the Royal Canadian Regiment mopped up pillboxes on the high ground beyond the airfield. Roland hailed from a family of seven. He left behind two brothers, one of whom also served overseas, two sisters and his mother and father, Alvin and Elizabeth Thoms. The family hailed from St. Jacobs, Ontario. Roland was also survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Thoms, who he married only three days prior to enlisting. Roland was born in 1915, and by 1940, he had established himself as a shoemaker in St. Jacobs. He practiced this profession for just over a decade before enlisting on 2 July 1940 in Kitchener, Ontario. Private Thoms completed infantry training at Camp Borden, and proceeded overseas to join the RCR in the fall of 1941. He embarked for Sicily with the Royal Canadian Regiment in mid-June 1943 and lays there still.

    MARTIN, Mildred Caroline (nee Thoms) - Surrounded by her loving family, passed away, peacefully at Grand River Hospital on Friday, March 17, 2006 at the age of 86. Devoted wife for 55 years of the late George A. Martin and loving mother of Eric and his wife Alix of Burlington, Rob and his wife Debbie of Kitchener, Julia Martin and her husband Barry Johnson of Kitchener and Linda Ritter and her husband Roger of Waterloo. Also survived by eight loving grandchildren. Mildred grew up and lived most of her life in St. Jacobs. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in St. Jacobs and devoted her time and talent to the E.L.W. She was also a long time member of the Merry- Maids Sextet. A Memorial service will be held at David MacLeod Funeral Home, 617 King St. N., Waterloo on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at 10 a.m., Rev. Harold Brill officiating.
