John Howard Schmitt - Sudden death yesterday called away John Howard Schmitt, aged 86 years, one month, 12 days, at his home in Wellesley, after an illness of only a few days. Decease was born in Wilmot, living there until nine years ago, when he moved to Wellesley. He is survived by nine children, forty-six grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren, his wife, Marie Knechtel having predeceased him 12 years ago. His daughters are Mrs. Charles Hachburnt of Danberg, Mrs. Henry Huehn and Mrs. Heimpel of Heidelberg, Mrs. John Koehler of Wilmot and Mrs. A. Heimpel of Wellesley; his sons, Jacob of Saskatchewan and John, Valentine and William of this city. The funeral will be held on Sunday at 1 pm from his late residence to the Canadian Lutheran Church, thence to Wilmot Cemetery for interment.

MRS. BARBARA KNECHTEL

Barbara Knechtel, relict of the late Philip Knechtel, passed away last evening at her home, 679 Park atreet, in her 92nd year. Deceased was a daughter of John R. Schmidt and Margaret Roth, both deceased. German Immigrants to Canada. She was born at Wilmot township. Mrs. Knechtel was of the Lutheran faith.

Two sons. Henry and Valentine. both of Kitchener, and one daughter. Mrs. George B. Schmidt, North Easthope, nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren survive.. One brother, Jacob R. Schmide, Kitchener, also survives.

The funeral will be held Monday afternoon with services at her late home Park street, at 130 o'clock and thence to St Jacob's Lutheran Church.

Burial will he made in North Fasthope. Rev. Mr. Hamister will officiate.

One of Kitchener's oldest residents in the person of Barbara Knechtel, relict of the late Philip Knechtel, passed away Wednesday. March 29th, at her home. 579 Park street, in her 92nd year. Deceased was a daughter of John R. Schmidt and Margaret Roth and was born in Wilmot township.
Surviving are two sons, Henry and Valentine, both of Kitchener, and one daughter, Mrs. George B. Schmidt, North Easthope, nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also one brother, Jacob R. Schmidt, Kitchener.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon with services at her late home to St. Jacobs Lutheran Church. Burial was made in North Easthope. Rev. Mr. Hamister conducted the service.

A well known and highly esteemed resident of this community passed away at his home in Plattsville last Friday, September 5th in the person of Mr. George Schmitt at the ripe old age of 85 years, 7 months and 4 days. The deceased had been troubled with heart disease and dropsy for quite a number of years.

The late Mr. Schmitt was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schmitt and was born at Philipsburg on February 1^st, 1845. He farmed many years in Wilmot Township and later moved into a farm near Plattsville. He retired from active work about twelve years ago and moved to the village. The deceased was twice married. His first wife, Margaret Forler, predeceased him about thirty-five years ago. His second wife before her marriage was Ellen Hardy, who survives him besides four daughters from his first marriage and one son and one daughter from the second, namely, Margaret (Mrs. Killer), Annie (Mrs. See) and Misses Amelia and Catharine, all of Detroit, and Georgina and J. G. Schmitt, of Plattsville.

The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from his late home to the Philipsburg Lutheran cemetery and was largely attended. Rev. Mr. Sawyer, of Plattsville, conducted the service at the house and Rev. Mr. Kirchofer, pastor of the Philipsburg Lutheran church, held the burial service at the graveside.

The funeral of the late George R. Schmitt who died at Plattsville on Friday, Sept. 8th took place here in the Lutheran Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 10th and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives. The late Mr. Geo. Schmitt was born on a farm two miles east of this village now occupied by his cousin, Mr. Emanuel Schmitt.

Jacob R. Schmitt - Another of the early pioneers of Wilmot Township has been called to his eternal rest in the person of Jacob R. Schmitt who passed away at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. George Z. Lantz, on Wednesday, January 8^th, at the ripe old age of 90 years, 11 months and 7 days. The deceased was born in Wilmot Township on the farm near Berlet's Corner where he farmed until he retired about 13 years ago, and which at present is owned by his son-in-law, Herbert Lantz. The deceased enjoyed good health until about two months ago. A twin brother, George R. Schmitt, of Plattsville, passed away a few years ago.

The late Mr. Schmitt was married to Mary Hamel who predeceased him eight years ago. Their union was blessed with fourteen children of whom seven survive, namely, Mrs. Geo. Z. Lantz, Philipsburg, Mrs. Albert Mueller, Waterloo, Jacob, of Galt, Louis H., of Waterloo, Mrs. Herbert Lantz, Wilmot, Mrs. Norman Zimmerman, Wilmot, Gordon Schmitt, of Kitchener. One son George was killed in action in the Great War. Another son, John, died a year ago and two daughters, Ida and Lovina, predeceased him a few years ago, and the others died in infancy.
The funeral will be held this Friday afternoon from the home of Mr. George Z. Lantz to the Philipsburg Lutheran Church, of which the deceased was a faithful lifelong member. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. H.R. Mosig, of New Hamburg, and Rev. Mr. Hamester, of North Easthope, will be in charge of the funeral services.

MRS. JOHN HAMEL

The death occurred this morning at three o'clock at the family residence, 55 Strange Street, of Mrs. Mary Hamel, widow of the late Mr. John Hamel. The deceased was in her 85th year and death came as the result of a lingering illness. The late Mrs. Hamel was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wellesley. She was predeceased by her husband 33 years ago and by one son, George, 49 years ago. She is survived by three sons and three daughters, Mr. John Hamel of Wellesley, Miss Emma Hamel of Kitchener, Mr. Jacob Hamel of New Hamburg, Mrs. F. Scott of Stratford, Mr. Albert Hamel, Kitchener, and Mrs. W. Ratz, Kitchener. One brother, Mr. Jacob Hamel, Wilmot Township, and one sister, Mrs. Philip Knechtel, Kitchener, also survive. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at tow o'clock with a private service at her late residence, 55 Strange Street, Kitchener, and will proceed thence to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Wellesley, for public services. Interment will be made in the Wellesley Lutheran Cemetery. The remains will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until Friday at four pm, when they will be removed to the home for the funeral.

He was a member of St. James' Lutheran church. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Ann Otto, in April, 1954. WELLESLEY, Nov. 14. - Mrs. Carl Hackbart of Hessen Rd., Wellesley Township, passed away at her home yesterday following an illness of five months.

Born at Berlet's Corners in 1863, she was 83 years of age. The deceased was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Heidelberg. She was a daughter of the late John R. Schmitt and the former Maria Knechtel. She was married in North Easthope in 1890 to Carl Hackbart, who survives.

Mrs. Hackbart is also survived by three sons, Edwin and Nelson of Hessen Rd., and Oscar of Heidelberg; two daughters, Olga (Mrs. Lorne Schmidt) of Heidelberg, and Clara (Mrs. Emil Schneider) of Bamberg. There are 32 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Three sons and a daughter predeceased her. Also surviving are two brothers. John Schmitt of Kitchener and Jacob Schmitt of Swift Current, Sask., and three sisters. Mrs. John Koehler of Wilmot Township, Mrs. Emilia Ziegler of Kitchener, and Mrs. Saloma Heimpel of Waterloo.

A service will be held from the late residence Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, followed by a servics at St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Heidelberg at 2:45 p.m. Burial will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Heidelberg. Rev. Henry Nuhn will officiate. The remains are resting at the late residence..

JOHN K. SCHMITT

Death occurred at the K-W Hospital Tuesday of John K. Schmitt, 48 Charon St., Kitchener. He was in his 80th year, and a native of Berlet's Corners, Wilmot Township.

He was married to Barbara Becker in Philipsburg in 1896. The family moved to Kitchener 29 years ago.

Mr. Schmitt was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, and of the Independent Order of Foresters.

His wife survives; also six sons, Clayton, Carl and Theodore of Kitchener, John of Hamilton, Alfred of Erbsville and Louis of East End, Sas- katchewan; and three daughters, Mrs. Jacob (Alma) Brown, Elmira, Mrs. Walter (Helga) Crawford and Mrs. Katherine Hiller of Kitchener.

One brother, Jacob, of Milwaukee, Wis., and three sisters, Mrs. John Koehler of St. Agatha, Mrs. Salome Heimpel of Waterloo and Mrs. Am- elia Ziegler of Kitchener, also survive.

A private funeral will be held at the residence at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon with a public service in St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 2:30 o'- clock. Rev. A. G. Jacobi will officiate.

VALENTINE K. SCHMITT

Following a lengthy illness, Valentine K. Schmitt, Freeport, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lorne Scharman, Freeport, early today in his 67th year. The deceased was born in Wellesley township on June 9, 1871, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John R. Schmitt. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran church, and the I.O.O.F. being past noble grand of Grand Union Lodge, Kitchener.

Surviving are his widow, one son, Percival of Detroit, Mich., four daughters, Mrs. Simon Weber and Mrs. Gordon Becker, both of Kitchener, Mrs. Lorne Scharman of Freeport, and Mrs. Harold Miller of Timmins, two brothers. Jacob of Swift Current, Sask., and John of Kitchener. five sisters, Mrs. Chas. Hachbart of Bamberg. Mrs. Henry Huehn of Heidelberg. Mrs. John Koehler of Wellesley, Mrs. Almelia Ziegler f Kitchener and Mrs. Salome Heimpel of Heidelberg, and two grandchildren. Two sons predeceased him in infancy.

Funeral services will be private from his daughter's residence on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock to St. Matthew's church for public services at 2.30 p.m. with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery. Rev. J. Schmieder will officiate.

Remains will be at Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 10 a.m. Friday.

A well known real estate dealer, William K. Schmitt, suffered a hemorrhage about a week ago and died at his home, 66 Peter St., Kitchener, early Monday morning. He was born in Wilmot township, Dec. 5th, 1875, a son of John R. Schmitt and Marie Knechted. On his birthday in 1899 he married Elizabeth Hammer in Baden.

He was quite prominent in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church circles, being president of the choir, secretary of the Brotherhood.

Mrs. William Heimpel

Mrs. William Heimpel, 82, of 31 Noecker St., Waterloo, died at K-W Hospital Monday after a short illness.

Born April 13, 1884, in Wilmot Township, she lived near Heidelberg until she moved to Waterloo 27 years ago. She was the former Salome Schmitt, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Schmitt. Her husband predeceased her in 1931.

Surviving are two sons, William of Waterloo and Addison of Bamberg; a daughter, Marie, at home, and a sister, Mrs. Amelia Ziegler of Kitchener. Four brothers and three sisters predeceased her. Also surviving are two grandchildren.

The body is at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, Waterloo, until noon Thursday when removal will be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Waterloo for service at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Erbsville Lutheran cemetery.

Knechtel. - Solomon Knechtel was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Aug. 9, 1856; died at his home in Waldon, June 20, 1932; aged 75 y. 10 m. 12 d. He was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Lydia Bechtel of New Hamburg, Jan. 8, 1895. This union was blessed with three children: Harry, Edward, and William (predeceased) him in infancy).

He leaves to mourn his deeply bereaved companion, 2 sons, 4 grandchildren, and a host of friends and relatives. About six months ago he underwent a serious operation at the St. Mary's Hospital at Kitchener. Just previous to the operation he was baptized and received into church fellowship by Bishop C. F. Derstine. On the evening of June 20, while getting ready to retire, he was seized with a severe heart attack, and dropped over and expired. His sudden death was a shock to his family and the whole community. Funeral services were conducted at the Shatz Church, June 23, by Orphen Wismer and Manassah Hallman. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

GALT, Jacob Smith, 80, of 49 Bich Ave., Galt, died Wednesday, in the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital. Born in Wilmot Township, he had been a resident of Galt, for 51 years, where he was associated with the R. A. Briscoe Company, for 43 years. For a number of years, he was manager of the Briscoe store. Mr. Smith was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Galt. Surviving are his wife, the former Lillian Witte: one son, W. Albert Hackbart of Near Linwood Passed Away Tuesday Fumes From Gasoline Started Fire

DRIVING SHED BURNED TO GROUND

Albert Hackbart, a well known and highly respected farmer, residing seven miles west of Linwood, passed away at nine o'clock Tuesday morning as a result of burns received when the fumes from gasoline caught fire, causing an explosion in the driving shed on his farm on Thursday night. Deceased, who was severely burned about the legs and back suffered excruciating pain and in spite of the best of nursing and medical attention, poisoning set in and the unfortunate man passed away, being conscious practically to the end.

The late Mr. Hackbart, who has done considerable threshing for farmers in the district, was engaged pouring gasoline from a large can into a smaller one in order to have it ready for next day's threshing operations. His seven year old daughter, Marie, was standing nearby holding a lantern and it is believed the fumes of the gasoline coming in contact with the lantern caused the gasoline to explode. The clothes of Mr. Hackbart caught fire immediately. His wife rushed to his aid from the house with a blanket and wrapped it about him but not before he was severely burned. The little girl escaped with severe burns to her hands and face. The driving shed caught fire and was burned to the ground, along with the contents which included a wagon, tractor, chopper and automobile.

The late Mr. Hackbart was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hackbart of near Bamberg, and was aged 37 years. About fourteen years ago he married Miss Marian Zinkan, of Heidelberg, who survives with a family of seven children, namely, Carl, Frieda, Margaret, Marie, Alfred, Herbert and Kenneth. The parents, four brothers, Edwin, Oscar, Harvey and Nelson, and two sisters, Clara, (Mrs. Emil Schneider), and Olga (Mrs. Lorne Schmidt), also survive.

The heartfelt sympathy of the whole community is extended to the bereaved family.
The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon from the home of the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hackbart, to the Heidelberg Lutheran Church and cemetery for interment.

Born in Heidelberg, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Huehn.

A retired carpenter, he moved to Kitchener 50 years ago. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and was on the executive of the Taxpayer's Association.

Surviving are two brothers, Reinhold of Waterloo and Emil of Heidelberg; three sisters, Mrs. Norman (Elma) Heimpel of Kitchener and Mrs. George (Erna) Stahlbaum and Mrs. Addison (Marie) Stahlbaum, both of Elmira.

His wife, the former Alma Zimmerman, and a sister predeceased him.

The body is at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Church, by Rev. Dr. John Schmieder. Interment will be in Heidelberg Cemetery.

ELMIRA - Mrs. George Stahlbaum, 8 Walker St., Elmira, died today at K-W Hospital. She was 72.

Mrs. Stahlbaum was born in Wellesley Township a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Huehn. She was the former Erma Huehn. She was a member of St. James's Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church Women.

Surviving are her husband to whom she was married Dec. 20, 1922; two sisters, Mrs. Norman Heimpel of Kitchener, and Mrs. Marie Stahlbaum of Elmira, and two brothers, Reinhold of Kitchener and Emil of Heidelberg.

Two sisters and one brother predeceased her.

The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Saturday noon when removal will be made to St. James's Lutheran Church for the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Rev. H.W. Baetz will officiate. Burial will be in St. James's

ARRESTED FOR INDECENT ASSAULT

Detective Klippert Monday afternoon arrested Joseph Meyer, a farm hand in the employ of Mr John Koehler, Wilmot Tp. The charge on which Meyer was arrested was one of assault committed upon fourteen year old girl, by the name of Emma Giese. The prisoner had a hearing before the Police Magistrate Tuesday afternoon and was dismissed.

MRS. EMMA SCHANER - A resident of St. Jacobs for 37 years, Mrs. Emma Schaner, 73, died Thursday, August 27, in K-W Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Breslau, Oct. 18, 1885, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold Giese.

On Nov. 20, 1926, she was married to William Schaner, who died in January, 1941.

She was a member of St. Jacobs, and was a charter member of the United Lutheran Church Woman.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur of St. Jacobs, Harold of Elmira; six daughters, Mrs. Warren (Isabel) Smith, Mrs. Oliver (Hazel) Lackner and Mrs. Lorne (Helen) Renesky of St. Jacobs, Mrs. Walter (Alma) Weigel of Elmira, Mrs. Hilbert (violet) Schedewitz of Waterloo, Mrs. George (Edith) Issler of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. William Zinn of St. Thomas, Mrs. Mary Schaefer of Preston, and 15 grandchildren. Two son, three sisters and one brother predeceased her.

The body rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, until Saturday at 11 am when removal was made to the church for the funeral at 3:30 o'clock. The Rev. Adolph Kappes officiated. Burial was in Heidelberg Lutheran Cemetery.

Surviving are his widow, the former Ann Farrell, whom he married 23 years ago at Kitchener; one son, Kenneth, and a daughter, Audrey, both of Kitchener. When Wally retired in 1969 from the Kitchener News Company, he had completed 38 years as an employee, manager and co-owner. He was a member of the retired business and professional mens club.

Loving husband to the former Dolores Schnarr, who is residing at Sunnyside Home where she is receiving loving care from her health care professionals. Dear father to Douglas and his wife Edee and Judy Farwell, all of Kitchener; grampa to Geoff, Jane and Tim Schmitt and Jeremy Farwell.

Predeceased by his parents, William Schmitt and Elizabeth Hammer; four sisters, Olivia, Vera, Dorothy and Edna and three brothers, Wilfrid, Oliver and Lester.

He was born in Wellesley Township 79 years ago. He had farmed at RR 3, Wellesley until his retirement in 1968 and also worked for the Region of Waterloo Roads Department for 10 years.

He was the son of the late William Heimpel and the former Salome Schmitt. Survived by his wife the former Dorothy Heipel; one son, Wayne and his wife Reta of St. Agatha; one sister, Marie Heimpel of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Denice and her husband Dave Prokowich of Waterloo, Paul, Lacie and Patricia and also by two great-grandchildren, William and Blake. He was predeceased by two brothers.

The late Mr. Heimpel will be resting at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, 40 Henry St., Wellesley, where the family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7-9 pm and on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. On Saturday morning, removal will be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Wellesley, for a memorial service at 11 am. Burial will be in St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. William Minke will officiate, assisted by Murray Heimpel.

MARIE K. HEIMPEL 1914 - 2006

After a long and full life, Marie died, on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at Columbia Forest Long Term Care Centre in Waterloo. She was 91.

She is survived by her loving niece Marilyn Ogram and her husband Bruce of Elmira and their family.

She was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by three brothers; Bill and his wife Edna, Addison and his wife Dorothy, one in infancy and her parents, Salome (Schmitt) and William Heimpel.

Marie was a longtime and faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Waterloo and the ELW. For many years, she worked as a hairdresser at Zarnke Hair Salon in Kitchener and then was self employed. Marie loved to travel to many destinations around the world with her friends and relatives.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Marie with her family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, today (Thursday) from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The service to celebrate Marie's life and faith will be held at in (sic) the chapel of St. John's Lutheran Church, on Friday, September 15, 2006, at 1 p.m., with Rev. Val Henning officiating. Immediately following the service, friends and relatives are invited to remain at the church for refreshments and a time to visit. Interment will follow in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Erbsville.

He and his brother Walter had gone down to the river to see the ice floating down, and Arthur, who was subject to spells of fainting slipped into about two feet of water where the river had overflowed its banks. Walter made a brave attempt to pull him out, but, unable to do so, he immediately gave the alarm, and assistance came at once, but too late to resuscitate the unfortunate boy. Arthur was a likeable boy and was quite bright at school, and will be missed by his companions and friends. The funeral service was held on Tuesday afternoon, and was largely attended by the villagers and sorrowing friends. The parents and family have the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends in this their sad hour of bereavement.

A celebration of Norma's life will be held in the chapel of the Henry Walser Funeral Home , 507 Frederick St., Kitchener (749-8467) at 11 am on Wednesday, March 9, 2016. Pastor Richard Schwass of St. Stephen Lutheran Church officiating. The burial has already taken place.
