As the first anniversary of her husband's passing neared, Dee Kuret wanted to reflect on Rudy Kuret's multifaceted life and what he meant to her, though their relationship nearly didn't happen.

"Everybody loved Rudy, he was so kind he couldn't do enough for anyone," said Dee, who mourns the passing of Rudy one year ago. It's taken this long before she felt strong enough to speak about the man who would appear in her life quite unexpectedly.....

Rudy was born one of seven kids in a small German village. His sweet disposition and mass of curly fair hair earned him the nickname "the little blond angel" said Dee. But Rudy's childhood would not be carefree.

The Second World War caused extreme hardship for Rudy's family. His father ended up in a prisoner of war camp and young Rudy's education was constantly interrupted.....

At 14, Rudy landed a foundry job, turning over his wages to his mother to support the family. In 1957, Rudy left Germany for Canada, unable to speak English and with a meagre $14 in his pocket. While learning English in school, Rudy landed his first job in Canada; car washer for 50 cents an hour.

Rudy found a better paying job in a Toronto foundry but the intense heat and humidity of an Ontario summer was hard to tolerate. He also met his first wife in Toronto and she suggested he take a job working for her boss at a hairdressing salon. Though Rudy started by doing odd jobs in the shop, he soon expressed interest in styling so the boss sent him to Marvel School of Hairdressing.

Rudy also studied business, under the mentorship of radio personality and Toronto Star reporter, Gordon Sinclair.

In 1960 Rudy and his then wife opened their first shop, Rudy and Trudy Hair Stylists in Cambridge....
