SHANTZ, Murray Bertram - (1921-2015) Quietly passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2015 in St. Catharines at the age of 93, after a short illness at Linhaven Long Term Care Home. He was pre-deceased by his wife Mary (nee Hawke, 2011) and his brother Arthur. He is survived by his sons, David (Maureen), St. Catharines, and Peter (Diane), Surrey, BC, and his daughter Barbara, Vancouver, BC, as well as his grandchildren, Derek (Madeline), Christy (Brian Gallant) and Mark (Brianna), two great grandchildren, Elaina and Foster, and sister-in-law, Jean Shantz. The last few years have been a time to treasure as Murray and Mary resided at Anchor Pointe Retirement Home in St. Catharines where many experiences and moments were enjoyed by all of the family. After graduating from St. Catharines Collegiate Institute Murray attended Sir George Williams University in Montreal where he received his BA. In 1943, Murray joined the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry where he served as a Captain in Europe during the war for two years. He always regarded himself as one of the fortunate ones to return. Arriving back in Canada, he and Mary were married and celebrated the next 65 years together. Murray joined the YMCA in 1945 where work became a way of life for him for 27 years - strongly believing in the 'Y' motto of Spirit, Mind and Body. He went on to direct Staff Development at the National Council of YMCA's where he provided mentorship, leadership training, and placement recommendations for many YMCA staff across the country. After the 'Y', he worked at Public Works Canada in Toronto heading up Human Resources there for 10 more years before he retired. Murray and Mary enjoyed their years living in Don Mills and Walden Pond of Markham. They also spent many winters at Outdoor Resorts in Melbourne, Florida and treasured the deep friendships that they made wherever they went. Murray loved tennis, which he played until he was 86, the trips with Mary in their Airstream trailer, and their many travels throughout the world. Together, they certainly had a full life of many experiences, and left their imprint with family, friends and the community. Special thanks to the many caring physicians and nursing staff at St. Catharines General Hospital and to the dedicated staff on Secord Unit at Linhaven who supported Murray through his final days. A celebration of life will take place Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the HULSE & ENGLISH FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL , 75 Church Street, St. Catharines (905-684-6346) at 2 p.m. Family will be there to accept friends from 1 p.m. \endash 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the YMCA of Niagara or the Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation would be appreciated.
