SCHAEFER, Willard -- At St. Mary's Hospital, on Monday, September 19, 1977, following a lengthy illness, Willard Henry Schaefer, aged 74 years, of 132 Pandora Ave. N. Born in St. Jacobs, he was a son of the late Edward Schaefer and the former Louisa Schmidt. Beloved husband of Myrtle Brine (Brethour); father of Glen of Bow Brickhill, England, Mrs. James (Jean) Hunter of Cambridge; stepfather of Mrs. Clare (Nancy) Bickell of St. Marys; brother of Henry E. of Waterloo. Four grandchildren also survive. Predeceased by his former wife, the former Ethel Kaufman and one sister, Ruth Merklinger. He was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Kitchener, where he was very active. He worked at O.W.Thompson Limited as a bookkeeper for 35 years. He was active with the Ontario Association for 27 years, and secretary for 18 years. He was a charter member the Chicopee Ski Club and a former director and treasurer. Mr. Schaefer was one of the best known naturalists in this area. Until earlier this year, he remained an active birdwatcher, continuing his annual studies of waterfowl at Puslinch Lake, which he had carried out for over 30 years. He was also well known for his keen interest in conservation, being one of the original opponents of the Elora Gorge Bridge, and also one of the early initiators of the K-W Audubon Wildlife Films. The acquisition of Dickson Wilderness and Bannister-Wrigley conservation areas was greatly aided by his efforts. He was a long time member of the K-W Field Naturalists, until 1971, and was a past president of that organization, as well as co-chairman of its Conservation Committee for a number of years. He was a founding member and one time chairman of Oikos Associates, a local environmental group. At the time of his death, Mr. Schaefer was working with a regional committee to complete a history of the birds of this area, which will be based, to a considerable extent, on his own records. Many young naturalists have been encouraged by his interest and knowledge. Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, after 7 p.m. today. 7 p.m. this evening. Funeral service in the chapel on Thursday at 2 p.m., with Mr. S.V. Townsend officiating. Interment Woodland cemetery.
