John S. Geisel Reminisces On Early Elmira District History

The Signet this week is paying tribute to one of the oldest couples still living, and in good health, of Elmira and district. With this issue, we present John S. Geisel, who was born on a farm close to Elmira, and who as a boy of 13 helped to make the logs and foundation blocks which went into the foundation of the West Montrose covered bridge which was started in 1880. Illness of the contractor led to a postponement, but the boy returned in 1882 to see the structure to its completion. It is one of the few covered bridges left in Ontario.

His son, Walter, now reeve in Woolwich Township, supervised the repairs to the old bridge earlier this year, and both Mr. and Mrs. Geisel were taken to the site to watch repairs.

John S. Geisel was born on a farm owned by his parents in 1867 in Woolwich Township, and here he grew to a youth of 17 before starting out to earn his own living.

For more than 51 years he can boast an unbroken record of having farmed in the district. And he retired a successful farmer, in the general sense of the term.

Mr. Geisel is a modest man, with an excellent memory. His only boast was that on the evening of marriage the bride and groom danced at a private home, and later, he smoked a last cigar, and decided to quit smoking. He left the burnt end on a window sill in order to make his resolution even more determined. For five days, he related, he restlessly passed that portion of cigar. But he was through with smoking. He then asked this reporter what he would assume a man could save by not spending 10 cents per day every day from the year 1895 when he was married to the present year, 1955. The reporter hazarded a wild guess - and he was solemnly assured, with his wife nodding confirmation, that with accumulated interest the amount saved ran to no less than $5000.

It was while doing day labor on a farm that he met his future wife in Elmira, where she was visiting a relative. The year was 1895. Mrs. Geisel is the former Mary Ann Koch of Clifford.

The young couple immediately planned to farm on the share-crop tenant basis of the old days. With his bride, who helped clean the house, which was quite old, they moved in. Their landlord by agreement provided cow pasture, wood, and $100 cash annually. They managed fairly well the first year, and in the second Mr. Geisel cleared some seven more acres, using horses to pull out the stumps.

When he embarked, in 1906, into his own stock and equipment, the prices he recalls, today, are a true reminder of what farming without the aid of self-propelled machinery could mean.

For a good milch cow, he reminisced, "I paid $17, and I think I got a bargain in two heifers, due to freshen in a few weeks, at $10 apiece. I also bought three horses for $100." He also added he bought one bob sleigh, at a sale for $7.

In the lie of farm implements, he bought, from his careful savings, a new Harris six-section harrow for $6.00. He considered this a bargain. A binder, also picked up through careful inquiries, was obtained for $3.

Mr. Geisel early learned the necessity of public service, and prior to his retirement from farming he had been a school trustee, as well as reeve. When he finally retired, and bought a dwelling in Elmira, he was also close to a church he had served for many years, the last 12 as an elder - St. Paul's Lutheran Church which he helped to build.

He could remember that, before his marriage, he would often accept a job cutting wood at 50 cents a day. Sometimes he would enter a wood-cutting contract. He remembers once having a very good partner, and cutting wood at 75 cents for 4 feet cord; and 50 cents for two-foot length cords. With the partners working daily, the average daily cut of the two men averaged four cords.

    Notes:

WEDDING BELLS - Last Wednesday evening St. Paul's Lutheran church was the scene of one of the those interesting events which always cause a ripple of excitement in the com-munity. The occasion was the marriage of Mr. Jacob Aberle, a well-known and respected young man of the neighborhood, to Miss Mary Geisel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Geisel of Woolwich Township. The ceremony was performed by Rev. W.C. Boese of Berlin, and was witnessed by a large number of spectators. Miss L. Geisel, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid while Mr. August Pfaff assisted the groom through the trying ordeal. After the wedding the young couple went to their future home on the Muth farm in Woolwich where a merry evening was spent by the young people who had been invited there. We join their many friends in wishing the young couple a long and prosperous married life.

    Aberle's Service Station

One of Elmira's older businessmen, namely Roy J. Aberle has conducted the Automotive Service Station located at the [north west] corner of Arthur and Water [now Wyatt] Streets for the past forty years. Roy has deeply appreciated the patronage of the citizens of Elmira and surrounding area and also that of the travelling public from outlying areas. The original Cities Service Products' building of 1933 was replaced by the present one in 1954. In July 1965 British Petroleum products were introduced. Mr. Aberle's sons, Gerald and Neil assisted their father during their school years. Both have joined the teaching profession following in their mother's footsteps rather than that of their father.

Roy J. Aberle Cities Service Station

Roy J. Aberle has conducted a successful business in the Cities Service Station, on the [north west] corner of Arthur and Water [now Wyatt] Streets, for the past 14 years. During these years he was assisted by many High School boys who earned pin-money by working part time: Leonard Rau (killed in a car accident), Merner Saddler, Buddy Hillis (killed overseas), Harold Schaub, Laverne Miller, Norman Hathaway, Donald Brox, Art Hahn, David Rowland (at present with the R.A.F., England). Mr. Aberle's own sons, Gerald and Neil, are now giving him a helping hand. The rainbow-coloured Studebaker shown in the picture, and used by Roy as a service car, was featured in the 1923 Old Boys Reunion as the most up-to-date car in Elmira at that time.

    ALMOST INSTANTLY KILLED

Accident Mars Enjoyment of Fair Day Crowd

Elmira was stunned by its first fatal motor car accident in some years On Monday when Glen Leroy Aberle, 5-year-oid son of Mr. and Mrs . Roy Aberle, was struck down and almost instantly killed by a heavy truck driven by Mr. Arlie Chambers, a Elmira, and owned by Mr. H. E. Haack, Elmira fruit and confectionery merchant. The accident occurred a few feet north of the post office intersection on Arthur Street at 12 o'clock noon on Monday.

The little lad had been at his father's service station, Cities Service, located almost directly across from the post office, where his father was working in the car greasing pit. As fair day is a busy day around the service station the father had decided to have his dinner at work. His two small children, Elaine 4, and Gerald 2, had come down to the post office corner with his lunch box. Instructed never to cross the road alone, the two children were heard by their father calling him. He instructed Glen to go across the road and bring his lunch and to be careful. The little lad went across safely and returned. It was then decided he should go home for his dinner and was going across the second time when the accident happened. Struck by the truck, the boy was terribly injured about the head, two wheels of the truck are said to have passed over his body also indicting severe injuries. Rushed to the office of Drs. MeQuibban and McCullough, little could be done to save the child's life as injuries inflicted had blotted out the little life almost before reaching the office. A terrible fracture of the skull was the direct cause of death.

While the father, Mr. Roy Aberie, did not see the child actually struck, he was one of the first to pick the child from the pavement where a pool of blood had run down to the gutter. Even then the father had little hope for the lad's life. Little Glen Leroy is survived by his parents and a brother and sister, Gerald 2 years, and Elaine 4 years. The funeral will be held today at 2 p. m. from the residence, 23 King Street, to St. Paul's Lutheran Church for service. Interment will take place in Elmira Cemetery. An inquest into the fatal accident has been ordered. for Friday at 2: 30 pm. in the town hall. No charges have as yet been laid.
