Lutz, Wm. H. druggist. Is a native of Galt. Born, 1843. Mr. Lutz, whose parents were among the first settlers here, has been member of the Town Council since 1879.

Mr Lutz death was front-page news in Galt. He passed away quietly seven on 21 March in the hospital. He had lived for fifty years in the house he had built on the brow of the hill on Cambridge street. He was mayor 1890-91 (two terms) after many years as an alderman. He served on the hospital board for many years, helping to start it, and was a founder of the Galt and Preston Railway. He served on many committees. His final years were spent in retirement, a great contrast to his active public life earlier. He was born 87 years earlier, the son of Morris C. Lutz in Galt. Morris had also been mayor of Galt in the 1850s. w.H. was a druggist for many years but ended his career as managing director of the Galt Art Metal Company; he left that position because of ill health. He was a member of Central Presbyterian church and a freemason. He married Mary Jane Stuart, who died in 1929. He was survived by his sister, Mrs Moncur of Peterborough, a brother Peter Lutz of St Paul MN, and two nephews William Moncur of Toronto and Coleman Moncur of Peterborough and a niece, Mrs William Kent of Toronto.

William Lutz was born in Galt on June 20, 1848, the son of Morris C. Lutz and Annie Neff. Mr. Lutz operated a drug store on Main St. and a malt house on Ainslie St. South before serving as the managing director of the Galt Art Metal Co. from 1919 to 1928. He was a member of the Galt Hospital Board from its inception in 1888 to his retirement in 1929, acting as secretary of that board. Mr. Lutz was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Galt Collegiate Institute board for two years and served on the Galt council as a councillor in 1886 and 1887, as second deputy reeve in 1889 and as mayor of Galt in 1890 and 1891.He served on the town Waterworks committee when Galt's municipal water system was being planned and was influential in the committee decision to get the water from artesian wells instead of the river. He was also instrumental in the building of the Galt and Preston Street Railway in 1894 and served, until 1919, as the secretary of that company, later renamed the Grand River Railway. Mr. Lutz died on March 21, 1936 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery.

W.H. Lutz, Chemist and Druggist, North Water Street - The name of Lutz is one that sounds familiar, and is closely interwoven with the early history of Galt, being that of a gentleman who was a prominent member of society in the early settler and alter days. The above named gentleman, Mr. W.H. Lutz is a son of the early settler, and was born and educated in Galt, and started in his present business 13 years ago as a chemist and druggist. The premises occupied for the business are 24x46 feet in dimensions and two stories in height, and substantially built of stone, and eligibly situated on the corner of Main and North Water Streets. Here will be found a full line of fresh and pure drugs, chemicals, toilet and fancy articles, perfumes, imported and domestic soaps, proprietary medicines, etc., and a special branch of the business is the compounding of physicians' prescriptions and difficult formulae, every precaution being taken against mistakes by the use of modern apparatus. Mr. Lutz also manufactures extracts and such articles. He is a graduate of the Ontario College of Pharmacy, and is at present a member of the Town Council.

W. H. LUTZ DIED SATURDAY NIGHT

Born In Galt, Former Mayor, Sect-Treas. Hospital Trust For 41 Years:

A public spirited and prominent citizen of Galt for many years, William H. Lutz, passed away in Galt Hospital Saturday evening at seven o'clock. He had been a patient at the hospital for the past five weeks. Mr. Lutz was in his 88th year and death was attributed to a general breakdown common to advanced years. He was born in Galt and during his life here he was active in the industrial and public life of the city, having been mayor, alderman, member of the G. I. C. board, and charter member of the hospital board. Citizens of Galt are now benefiting from the time he spent and the Keen judgement he used while serving the interests of the city in its early days. For the past 50 years he had resided in the house he built on the brow of Cambridge Street hill, an ideal location from where he could view almost the entire city in which he passed his life of 87 years. Of a quiet personality, Mr. Lutz of late years has lived a retired life almost in direct contrast to the earlier period of his life when he was active in business and organizing public enterprises. A son of Morris C. Lutz, first mayor of Galt who occupied the chair in 1857-58-59, W. H. Lutz followed the precedent set by his father and entered in public life. For a number of years he served as an alderman and then in 1980 became mayor. In 1891 he was elected for a second term. As alderman he served on the now extinct waterworks commission, and it was then that Galt's water system was laid down. Heated controversy arose at the time between proponents of Sudden's Lake and Mill Creek as sources of water supply. Non-partisan and with sound judgement, Mr. Lutz was instrumental in upsetting the apple cart of interested parties and influencing the commission to decide to get water from artesian wells. For 41 years he was active as secretary of the hospital board, retiring from that position in 1929, due to illness. For a number of years he was the only surviving member of the original board which was elected in 1888 when the first meeting of the hospital trust was held in the council chambers. The men elected at the meeting to plan the construction of a hospital and guide it through the difficult early years were: Hon. Jas. Young, Pres., John Goldie, vice-pres., J. M. Lumsden, treas., W. H. Lutz, sect., and Jas. Warnock, Robert Gilholm, J. C. Dietrich, Robert Turnbull, Adam Warnock, trustees. Mr. Lutz was the last of his pioneer group. During his incumbency as secretary he served under seven presidents, namely Hon. James Young, Adam Warnock, Robert Gilholm, David Spiers, G. C. Eastman, W. B. Powell and Jas. Cowan. In private business he was identified as managing director of the Galt Art Metal Co., serving in that capacity from 1919 until the end of 1928, the same illness which forced his retirement from the hospital board demanded cessation of his active business live. Formerly he had operated a drug store at the present site of the Bank of Toronto and had also operated a malt house located on Ainalie street south. Of an enterprising nature, he was one of the organizers of the Galt and Preston railway. The two towns were not then connected by rail, and Mr. Lutz, mayor at the time, gave the local men promoting the enterprise his official encouragement. Until 1919 he served as secretary of the road which became the Grand River and L. E. & N. company before he retired from the position. For two years her served as a member of the G. C. I. board. In religion he had been a life long member of Central Presbyterian Church. Mr. Lutz was also a member of Alma Lodge, A. F. & A. M., joining in 1873 and being master of the lodge in 1877 and '78. Mr. Lutz's wife, Mary Jane Stuart, passed away January, 1929, and he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Moncur, Peterborough, one brother, Peter Lutz, St. Paul, Minn., two nephews, Wm. Moncur, Toronto, Coleman Moncur, Peterborough, and one niece, Mrs. Wm. Kent, Toronto. The funeral service will take place Tuesday afternoon at 2: 30 o'clock from his late residence, 92 Cambridge Street, to Mount View Cemetery for interment.

William married Mary Jane Stuart 9 Feb 1876, Burford, Burford Twp., Brant Co., Ontario. Sad Bereavement

The happy home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lutz in this town has been darkened since our last issue by the death of their only daughter, Ethel Lorne, a bright and winsome child, beloved by all who knew her. She passed away on Sabbath last, in the 7th year of her age, having been taken ill the preceding Sunday. In the presence of bereavement such as this, expressions of sympathy sound cold and formal; but such as they are we extend them to the stricken parents, confident that in doing so we only express the sentiments of every person in the town.
