MICHAEL FRIES, SR. - Only a month after the death of his wife there passed away at his home here Michael Fries, Sr. The shock of his life partner's death and the pain of the parting was too much for his enfeebled body to withstand. The deceased was born near Heidelberg in 1889 (or possibly 1839, blurred). At the age of 22 he was married to Elizabeth Frey. They took up the duties of married life on a farm north of West Montrose, then mostly primeval forest. Here the deceased put in many a day's hard labor in clearing the forest and getting the land ready for the plough, while his wife looked after the housework and raised a large family of robust boys and girls. With industry they succeeded in building up a fine home for themselves. After about forty years of farm life, Mr. and Mrs. Fries came to spend the remaining years in quiet retirement in Elmira. They enjoyed good health until a few years ago when the infirmities of old age began to make themselves felt. The deceased is survived by a large family. They are Solomon of Saskatchewan, Veronica (Mrs. Henry Dobberthein of Iowa, Michael of Elmira, Margaret (Mrs. Wm. Dobberthein) of Elora, Daniel of Kitchener, Jacob of Elmira, John of Bollingbrook, Ont., Katie (Mrs. Plate) of Kitchener, Lydia (Mrs. Levi Snyder) of Woolwich. Christina, (Mrs. Arthur Rhodes) of Kitchener. Magdalena (Mrs. Armand Fulcher) of Elmira. One brother, Daniel of Kitchener, also 54 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren survive the deceased. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. L. Kalbfleisch of St. James church officiated. The pallbearers were six grandsons; Clayton, Fred, Clarence and Gordon Fries, Herbert Dobberthein and Gordon Plate.

Saturday, July 7th, 1923 - Friday, February 18th, 2022
John Daniel (Jack) Boettger passed away peacefully February 18, 2022, surrounded by family. Left to celebrate his life and missing his amazing hugs are his wife of 73 years, Ruby (Decher), his children Susan Rivers (Keith), Allan Boettger, Kathy Duncan, Tom Boettger (Kate), Karen Boettger and Cindy Fish (Dave), as well as his grandchildren Angela Boettger (Paul Basarke), Paul Boettger, Adam Kasper (Shannan), Andrew Rivers (Kelly), Gillian Dyck (Dan), Stephanie Bezaire (Phil), Geoffrey Rivers (Kourtney), Scott Boettger (Melissa), Trevor Smith, Aaron Duncan (Jessica), Isabella Wideman (Ben), Courtney Fish, Jena Fish and 17 great grandchildren.
Jack was predeceased by sister Shirley Hoch and brothers Ken Boettger and Harold Boettger, son-in-law Kevin Duncan and daughter-in-law Laura Smith. He was a Canadian Navy veteran of World War II, a lifetime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kitchener and past president of KW Project Woodwork.
Jack's greatest loves, after Ruby, were family, golf and the Blue Jays. He never missed an opportunity to play with his 30 grand and great grand children. They all share fond memories of time spent together. He was always ready to tee off for a round on the links with friends and family, claiming two aces and shooting his age in the process. He and Ruby followed the Jays to spring training, as well as on road trip bus tours during their time in retirement.
Jack raised his family with great work ethic, unconditional love, grace and humility. He demonstrated the importance and strength of faith and family. We are doing our best to live and pass on his legacy.
We are proud to be the house that Jack built.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Village of Winston Park for their care of Jack during his time with them.
Jack's family will receive relatives and friends from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022 at Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener.
