Death of Prominent Citizen

Fergus A. Anderson, Former C. N. K. Official, Passes in 71st Year

The death Occurred on Friday morning, after a lengthy illness, of Fergus A. Anderson, Northumberland Street, a former prominent official of the Canadian National Railways, in his 71st Year.

Born at Greenfield in 1865, the youngest son of the late Walter and Mary Anderson he entered the service of the Canadian Pacific Railway at the age of 17 years, and his keen intellect and rnastery of figures soon won him advancement in this department. Progressing steadily from one position to Another and changing over to the Canadian Northern (which was later merged into the Canadian National Railways) in 1900, he finally won his way to the top of his department in 1918, when he was appointed auditor of freight receipts for the entire C. N. R. system, with headquarters in Toronto. He thus won great credit for himself and brought distinction to the village of his birth.

After receiving his early education in the schools of this district, he left for Western Canada at the age of 17 years to take a position as travelling auditor with the Canadian Pacific Railway. In the latter nineties he was made travelling passenger agent, with headquarters at Nelson, B.C., which position he held until 1900, when be severed his connection with that company to take a position as travelling auditor in Western Canada with the Canadian Northern Railway, In July, 1904, he was made chief In the accountancy department at Winnipeg, and in September of that year he was married to Anna Margaret Meldrum, daughter of the late Dr. N. W. Meldrum and Mrs. Meldrum of Ayr, and took up residence in the Western city,

In December, 1910, he was appointed auditor of freight and passenger receipts on the Western lines and held that position until November, 1918, when the company was included in the merger of the Canadian National Railways. He was then moved to Toronto and given the position of auditor of freight receipts for the entire system he held this position until 1923, when he was superannuated.

He removed back to his home community of Ayr the following year where he spent the remainder of his days. In politics he was a staunch Liberal and was always greatly interested in the affairs of the country. Ho was in Western Canada in the stirring days of the Northwest Rebellion, which broke out In 1885, and enlisted in the army, being stationed at Fort Qu'Appelle.

In his younger days he was a keen sportsman, being a splendid runner and a noted lacrosse player. He later took up curling, in which sport he was an enthusiast. While in Winnipeg, he was a prominent member of the Union Terminal Curling


Club and captured many fine trophies. He was considered by his colleagues as one of the best skips in Winnipeg and the West at that Period.

On returning to Ayr, he acted as secretary of the Ayr Union Curling Club for a time and also held the position of president of the Ayr Rink Company, Limited, for a number of Years.

Besides his widow, he is survived by one daughter, Alice, at home, and four sons, viz.: William, Norman and James, Toronto, and Walter, at home; also by one brother and three sisters: Robert F. Anderson, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. R. P. Watson, Vegreville, Alta.; Mrs. G. V. Hastings and Mrs. W. A. Matheson, Winnipeg.

The Funeral.

The funeral, which took place on Monday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock to the Ayr Cemetery, was largely attended. The services were in charge of Rev. J. W. Currie, assisted by Rev. David Carswell of Toronto, while the pallbearers were as follows: Norman Meldrum, Norwich ; Dr. G. E. D. Wilson, William, Norman, Walter and James Anderson. The flower bearers were: Robert and John Robertson, Donald Robinson, James Pitcher, Howard Reid and Walter Reid. The floral offerings were beautiful.
