Death of David Brown
Oldest Native-Born Resident Passes in His 88th Year
The death occurred in Galt Hospital on Saturday morning of David Brown, oldest native-born resident of this community, in his 88th year. Mr. Brown was removed to the hospital for treatment in September of last year, his death resulting from pneumonia which he contracted a day or so prior to his demise. Deceased was born on Nov. 13, 1849, on the 11th concession of Blenheim, son of David Brown and Isabella Lillico, original settlers from Scotland. There were twelve children in the family, which was one of the most prominent in this locality. On April 6, 1883, he commenced farming for himself on the farm now occupied by Leslie McDonald, 10th concession of Blenheim, where he remained for a period of almost half a century, removing to Ayr on June 17, 1931. Mr. Brown devoted much of his time to furthering the interests of the church in this community. He was ordained to the eldership of Knox Church on the 27th day of July, 1879, along with the late David Goldie and John Edgar, under the ministry of the late Rev. Dr. John Thomson. He was a member of the session for a term of 58 years, a record which has seldom been equaled in the Province. During the following ten years much progress was made by the church, and in 1887 it was decided the old building was inadequate and a new church was necessary. Deceased, along with other members of the session and board of managers of that period, accepted a full share of the heavy labor thus involved, and the new place of worship was completed and opened for worship in 1888. His main interest, however, was centred in the Sabbath School, of which important, organization he was superintendent for about 30 years, resigning his duties in 1914 upon the occasion of the union of Stanley Street congregation with Knox. In addition to acting as superintendent of Knox Sunday School each Sabbath morning, he conducted Sunday school each Sabbath afternoon in the school house on the 10th concession of Blenheim. He was thus in control of the early religious tuition of hundreds of scholars who are now scattered far and wide throughout the continent. Mr. Brown never married, his household duties being under the capable direction of Miss Kate Teller for a period of 48 years. He is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Thomas M. Brown and Mrs. George Mitchell, Ayr; John J. Brown, South Dumfries; Mrs. John R. Hall and Miss Minnie Brown, Toronto.
The Funeral
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon from Knox United Church to Ayr Cemetery, preceded by a private service for the family at his late residence on Hall street. A large number of friends, relatives and neighbors were present at, the church service, which was in charge of Rev. J. W. Currie, assisted by Rev. Dr. Richard Davidson, Principal of Emmanuel College, Toronto. During the service, two favorite psalms were sung, led by the choir. The pallbearers were six nephews, as follows: David Brown, Pringle Brown, David Mitchell, David Reid, Leslie McDonald and Norman Hall. Among those present were relatives from Toronto, Brantford and Drumbo.

Passing of Thomas M. Brown
The sudden death occurred at his home, Hall street, Ayr, on Monday of Thomas M. Brown, in his 85th year.
The late Mr. Brown sustained a heart attack shortly after midnight on Sunday and passed away some three hours later.
Born on the Brown homestead, 11th concession of Blenheim township, now owned by his nephew David H. Brown, he took up farming on the 6th concession of South Dumfries in 1896 on the property now occupied by his son, Pringle Brown. He retired to reside in Ayr some 22 years ago.
Owing to ill health, he was forced to give up farming in 1909, when he came to Ayr, where he resided until 1912. He then returned to the farm. For some 18 months, during this interval, he conducted a grain business in the premises now occupied by the Ayr District Co-op.
Mr. Brown was a son of the late David Brown and Isabella Lillico, original Scottish settlers. He was one of a family of twelve children, of whom only two still survive. They are J. J. Brown and Mrs. George Mitchell, both of Ayr.
In religion he was a lifelong Presbyterian.
Mr. Brown was a good friend and neighbour and will be greatly missed in the community.
Besides the brother and sister mentioned above, he is survived by one son, Pringle, South Dumfries, and a daughter, Miss Marion, at home; also by three grandchildren. His wife, whose maiden name was Jean Laidlaw Pringle, predeceased him in January 1947.

David A. Reid Passes
One of Ayr's oldest and best known citizens, David Arthur Reid, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home on Tuesday afternoon, He was in his 80th year. An active man, Mr. Reid had worked up until several months ago, and was seen almost daily on the streets of the village. He was a lifelong resident of Ayr, a son of the late Alexander Reid and Margaret Brown whose family. ties in this community reached back to pioneer days. For most of his lifetime Mr. Reid was employed with the bridge and building division of the C.P.R. and following his retirement he worked with the John Watson Mfg. Company here for a number of years. In early life he was a keen sportsman and a valued member of the Ayr Curling Club. His interest continued in later years and he was a familiar figure at hockey and soft-ball games here. Mr. Reid's social life had always been directed mainly toward the welfare of Ayr's two fraternal organizations. He was a past master of both the Ayr Masonic Lodge and Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F Among his most valued possessions were medals indicating 50 years of membership In both lodges which he received several years ago. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Greer (Ethel) of Ayr and Mrs. Fred Poll (Ella) of Ashburn, Ontario. Funeral services will be held from his late residence, on Friday at 2 p.m., with interment in Ayr Cemetery.

Pte. William Reid the Latest to Make the Supreme Sacrifice
Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Reid of Ayr received a telegram Sunday morning from the Military Intelligence Office at Ottawa announcing the death in action on Nov 11, of their son, Pte. William Reid. "Pink," as he was familiarly known among his associates, enlisted with the 111th Battalion, and had therefore been overseas for some time. He was popular with a large circle of friends who will sincerely regret his fate. Besides his aged parents he leaves two brothers and two sisters to mourn their loss. Three of them, John, Mrs. Greer and Miss Ella, reside in Toronto while David is at the parental home. Out of respect to the memory of Pte. Reid and Lance Corp. Carpenter, the town flag, the emblem of Empire for which they gave their lives, is flying at half-mast.
