Simon Hammer - By Record Correspondent - SHAKESPEARE - Simon Hammer, 80, of Shakespeare, died at the Avoncrest in Stratford Friday.
Born in Wellesley Township, he farmed in North Easthope Township for 39 years, moving to Shakespeare in 1949. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sebastopol, where he married Anna Katherine Krantz in 1911.
He is survived by his wife, four sons, Gordon, RR 3, New Hamburg, Milton, RR 4, Stratford, Percy, 208 Douglas St., Stratford, and Herbert, RR 2, Baden; five daughters, Mrs. Harold (Gladys) Neeb RR 3, New Hamburg, Mrs. Walter (Lorna) Neeb, Wellesley, Mrs. Harold (Beatrice) Yungblut, Tavistock, Mrs. Vernon (Georgina) Hammond, Atwood and Mrs. Charles (Elsie) Stewart, London, Ont.; one brother, Jacob, Brantford, 35 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The body will be at the Francis Funeral Home, Tavistock, until noon Monday. The funeral service will be conducted in Trinity Lutheran Church, Sebastopol, at 2: 30 p.m. by Rev. Forest R. Mosher. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Alonzo Ortwein, 85, a resident of Croswell most of his life, died Thursday in the Chambers Nursing Home, Sandusky, after a short illness. Mr. Ortwein was born January 11, 1880 in Hensall, Ontario. He was a retired painter. He is survived by a son, Alonzo J Ortwein, Pontiac; a sister, Miss Ella Ortwein, Hensall, Ontario, three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Saturday in the Pomeroy Funeral Home. Rev. Charles Hurley, Pastor of the Marysville Baptist Church, officiated. Burial was in the Croswell Cemetery.

Son of the late Simon Hammer and the late Anna M. Krantz. Mr. Hammer was a lifelong member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Easthope. He farmed in North Easthope Township, retiring in 1973. He operated the Sawmill in Amulree from 1954 to 1993. Gordon was a member of the Wellesley Jolly Oldsters and the Wellesley North Easthope Agricultural Society. He also enjoyed sharpening saws and playing cards. Dear father of Mary and her husband, Kenneth Thomas of Kitchener, Verna and her husband, James Coneybeare of RR 4, Listowel, Doreen and her husband, William McCallum of RR 1, Stratford, Ross and his wife, Linda Hammer of Kitchener, Reid Hammer of Millbank, Leonard and his wife, Marilyn Hammer of Dryden and Brenda and her husband, Jeffery Mayhew of Kitchener. Loving brother of Milton and Phyllis Hammer of Tavistock, Lorna Neeb of New Hamburg, Beatrice Yungblut of Stratford, Georgina Hammond of Kitchener and Elsie Stewart of London. Brother-in-law of Jean Hammer of Baden. Cherished grandpa of 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. NEEB, Mrs. Harold (Gladys)-Peacefully, on Friday, March 19, 1999, at The Bonnie Brae Health Care Centre, Tavistock.
Gladys was born 84 years ago in North East Hope township. She was the former Gladys Hammer.
Survived by her husband, Harold of Shakespeare; two sons, Floyd and his wife Delores, Allan and his wife Daphne, all of RR 1, New Hamburg; one daughter, Marjorie and her husband Kenneth Mohr of Shakespeare; two brothers, Gordon and Zerine Hammer of Wellesley, Milton and Phylis of Tavistock; four sisters, Lorna Neeb, Beatrice Youngblut of Stratford, Georgina Hammond of Kitchener, Elsie Stewart of London; sister-in-law, Mrs. Jean Hammer of Baden and Audrey Hammer of Stratford; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Herb and Percy, four brothers-in-law, Harold Youngblut, Walter Neeb, Charles Stewart and Vernon Hammond.
She was a member of the Mary Martha Society and Sunday School Teacher. She was very active in the Wellesley North East Hope Agriculture Society and at many local fairs.
She was the daughter of the late Simon Hammer and the former Anna Krantz.
Visitation will be at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, 40 Henry St., Wellesley, tonight (Saturday) from 7-9 p.m. and on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Removal will be made on Monday at noon to 1st St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Wellesley for the service at 2:30 p.m., with Pastor George Reinhart officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

HERBERT ALFRED HAMMER -- Passed away Saturday, December 1, 1984 in Waterloo. A resident of Larder Lake and formerly of the New Hamburg area.
He was born 57 years ago in North Easthope Township and was a son of the late Simon Hammer and the former Anna Krantz. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hamburg, and was a former owner of the Golden Hammer Inn, New Hamburg. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, the former Jean Roth. Dear father of James and his wife Joan of New Hamburg, Joyce and her husband Wilson Cook of Wellesley, Bruce and his wife Sharon, Debborah and her husband Brian Roth, Dianne and her husband Chris Medley all of New Hamburg. A former Kitchener woman and her husband, formerly of St. Jacobs, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Snyder,were among 36 persons killed when an airliner bound from Southern Rhodesia to London, England, crashed Saturday near Benghazi, Libya.
Mrs. Snyder was the former Gladys Becker. She was 54. Her husband was 58.The couple operated a 540-acre tobacco farm in Darwendale, Southern Rhodesia.
Mr. and Mrs. Snyder were married in Capetown, South Africa May 2, 1956.
RESIDED WITH AUNT - For seven years prior to her marriage, Mrs. Snyder resided with her aunt, Mrs. Mary Bowman, 21 Beverly St., Waterloo.
She and Mr. Snyder met here in 1955 when Mr. Snyder returned to visit a brother, Clive Snyder, 109 Dunbar Rd.
Mr. Snyder, a native of St. Jacobs, had been away from this district for 34 years. He was a mining engineer in Africa from 1924 until he and his wife started tobacco farming over two years ago.
His first wife died about five years ago.
Mrs. Snyder was well-known in this district. In partnership with Miss Rose Kampman, she operated the Blessed Event Maternity Shop, 83 Ontario St. South, for about a year.
NEW HAMBURG NATIVE- Previous to that she sold real estate for Kearns Insurance and Realty, Ltd.
A member of Westmount Golf Club, she was also a member of the KW Granite Club and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.
In Darwendale she was treasurer of the Darwendale Women's Institute.
Born in New Hamburg, Sept. 22, 1903, she was a daughter of the late Mr.and Mrs. William Becker. Her father predeceased her in New Hamburg five years ago and her mother, the former Anna Doering, died 51 years ago.
Surviving besides her aunt in Waterloo and two nephews, is a sister, Mrs. Ader (Anna) Hind, 13 Union St. East, Waterloo.
A brother, Elijah, predeceased her about 32 years ago.
Mrs. Snyder was a resident of Kitchener most of her life.
BORN IN ST. JACOBS - Mr. Snyder was born in St. Jacobs, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Snyder. His mother, the former Clara Snider, was a daughter of E.W.B. Snider, one of the founders of Ontario hydro.
Before graduation from Montreal's McGill University in 1924, he had travelled across Canada working at a variety of jobs.
Among other things, he was a railroad man in Alberta, a lumberjack in Ontario and a taxi driver in Montreal. Once he went to England as a crew member on a cattle boat.
The Snyders specialized in tobacco, and their farm produced 900 pounds to the acre.
