Sudden Death of Aged St. Jacobs Woman - The many friends and relatives of the late Susannah Gingrich, wife of Mr. David Ernst, of St. Jacobs were shocked to hear of her sudden death on Monday evening. On Monday morning the deceased accompanied by her husband, left on the 10 o'clock train to visit friends in Elmira and vicinity. Spending the day with her stepsons in Elmira, they drove out in the evening to the home of Mr. Jonas Martin, above Elmira. Soon after their arrival, Mrs. Ernst was taken suddenly ill and passed peacefully away about nine o'clock. Having suffered a few years ago from a stroke, the deceased had never been very strong since. Previous to their coming to St. Jacobs, they resided for a number of years in Glenallan and neighborhood. About two years ago, when their son-in-law, Mr. Eli Brubacher, purchased the Brubacher home on King St., the aged couple came to live with their daughter. The deceased was a very intelligent person, who with her kind and pleasing disposition won many friends throughout this county, where she was born and brought up, and was blessed by five children - Noah Martin, near St. Jacobs, Rev. Jesse Martin, near Breslau (children with the first husband, Peter Martin), David Ernst, Glenallan, Lovina (Mrs. Eli Brubacher), and Barbara in Michigan. There were also 8 brothers and sisters, Bishop Gingrich, Upper Woolwich; Rev. Jacob Gingrich, near Preston; John, Grand Rapids; Israel, St. Jacobs; Menno, near St. Jacobs, Isaac, near Floradale; Lydia (Mrs. Mose Weber) and Miss Nancy Gingrich, near Conestogo. Mr. N.W. Gingrich of this place is a first cousin. The aged husband and children who are left to mourn the loss of a kind helpmate and living mother, have the heartfelt sympathy of their friends in their sad and sudden bereavement. The funeral will take place today, from the residence of Mr. Eli Brubacher to the Conestogo Riker Road Mennonite Church for service and burial.

Jacob B. Gingerich, "was born June 13th, 1840. He was first married to Mary, daughter of Rev. David and Elizabeth (Betzner) Sherk. She was born February 4th, 1837. They resided on the old "Sherk Farm" on the east bank of the Grand River, opposite the village of Doon where she died May 3rd, 1866. After her decease he was married to Elizabeth Sherk, sister to his first wife. She was born July 27th, 1845. On July 1st, 1878, he was ordained as a minister of the Mennonite body for the Hagey and Wanner field of labor. He is a good man and a diligent worker for the Master, and is very liberal in his views in regard to the plan of salvation. As a minister he is very popular on his fields of labor. Of first wife there was one son named David (dead). Of second union there were ten children".

Preston (Bechtel or Hagey) Mennonite Church

The second meeting house in Waterloo County was built, probably in 1814, by John Erb, a wealthy miller of Preston. This brick meeting house served as a community church and was located "near Jacob Hagey's", which was on the road running from the top of the Kress Hill west and "adjoining the Kitchener Highway" (Witmer 1967: 26). Another meeting house, known as the Union Meeting House, was built in the area around 1824. A meeting was held in the Union church on November 20, 1824 to commence recording the accounts of the congregation in Hagey's Deacon Book. The deed of land for the Union Meeting House and burial ground, which was for one acre of part Lot 22, Beasley's Broken Front, was transacted in 1835.

Hagey Meeting House was buiilt of red brick in 1842 on part Lot 23, just north of Preston on the west side of the Breslau Road, and slightly north of the Union Meeting House site. The deed, dated February 2, 1842, recorded the purchase of the land from John Hilborn and stressed that the property was to be for "the purpose of public worship by the Mennonist Society" (Witmer 1967: 28). Joseph Bechtel was the first minister in the area, from 1804-1837; he was followed by David Sherk (1838-1843). Next came Joseph Hagey (1844-1877), who was ordained bishop in 1851, and then Jacob B. Gingrich from 1878 to 1901. Services were held every four weeks until 1890 when bi-weekly services were begun. A Sunday School was established in 1842 with the congregation of Wanner Meeting House near Hespeler, but it was discontinued because of a difference of opinion regarding the need for Sunday Schools. On April 26, 1891 a Sunday School was organized at Hagey's, with deacon Abraham Oberholtzer as superintendent. Five years later, on June 10, 1896, a Sunday School was organized at the Wanner church.

Major changes were made to the church building in 1927-1928 when the basement was excavated, new windows were installed and the roof was raised two feet. Fire on January 15, 1950 caused extensive damage to the interior and furnishings of the church. The building was completely renovated and also enlarged at the same time; dedication was on July 2, 1950. Another fire, on Feburary 19, 1953, completely destroyed the church. A congregational decision was made to build a new church, on Concession Road in Preston, and the cornerstone was laid on Thanksgiving Day, October 12, 1953. Official dedication services in the new Preston Mennonite Church were held on May 16, 1954. The building was enlarged in the summer of 1989.

Gingrich - Pre. Jacob B. Gingrich was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., June 13, 1840; died Oct. 11, 1920; aged 80 y. 3 m. 28 d. He was first married to Sister Mary Sherk, daughter of Pre. David Sherk. She preceded him in death. He was again married to Elizabeth Sherk, sister of his first wife, Dec. 2, 1866. July 2, 1878 he was ordained to the ministry and for thirty years served to the best of his ability in that capacity. He labored with the Wanner and Hagey congregations. Twelve years ago he received a paralytic stroke while in the pulpit from which he never fully recovered. The last four years he has been confined to his home. He was a devoted companion and a kind father, ever willing to help those in need. He was patient in his sufferings. He leaves a loving companion, 4 sons, 3 daughters, and 26 grandchildren. Two sons and 1 daughter preceded him. Funeral services were held at Hagey's Church by Brethren Ben Shantz, Abram Snider, and Jonas Snider. Many relatives and friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect. Burial in cemetery nearby.

OBITUARY, After a long and painful illness extending over a period of twenty-five years, Mrs. Levi P. Martin (nee Gingrich) passed away on Tuesday evening. For the past seven years the deceased had to be handled and care for very tenderly at ties the least touch or strain causing exquisite pain. She bore her sufferings with great Christian fortitude, always cheerful and patiently waiting for the end. A husband and five children survive her, besides a large circle of relatives. The funeral took place on Friday forenoon. The family have the sympathy of the people of the vicinity.

Gingrich. - John B. Gingrich died at Grand Rapids, Oct. 29, 1919: aged 72 y. 3 m. He was a brother of Bishop A. B. Gingrich of Elmira, Ont. He lived most of his life in Waterloo Co., Ont. He moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., about twelve years ago. July 24, 1847 (actually his birth date not marriage), he was married to Mary Ann Hembling, who was for him a faithful helpmeet for over fifty years. To this union were born seven sons (Isaiah, John, Josiah, Jesse, Noah, William, and David) and one daughter (Mrs. Mary Schwartz) who died about a year ago. He is survived by seven sons, 22 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. He was a member of the United Brethren in Christ for over forty years and was a bright and shining light wherever he went. Peace to his ashes.

The John B. Gingrich Account Book By Jim de Waal Malefyt

The John B. Gingrich "Account Book" was started in March of 1883 by John B. Gingrich when he lived in Floradale in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, Ontario. John was a blacksmith and was married to Mary Ann Hembling, daughter of deacon William Hembling. The account book has been handed down in this Gingrich family for several generations and was copied by the author in 1996. The book (20 cm x 32 cm) contains numbered pages of his business accounts with about 110 of his clients written in script at the top of each page. Names of his clients are listed below for reference to those interested in what their ancestors may have bought or had repaired at the blacksmith shop of John Gingrich in the late 1800s. A copy of the John B. Gingrich Account Book is on file at the Kitchener Public Library.

The business entries in this account book span a ten-year period from 1883 to 1893. Dates are located on the left side of the page. The middle contains the item John worked on or made or the barter item received. The last two columns on the left of each page contain the amount of credit, "Cr," or the cost of his service drawn, "Dr," from the account. Blacksmith items John worked on commonly included making, sharpening or repairing farm implements and attachments to horses such as shoes, "waggon tyres," harness rings, "wiffletrees,"1 harrow, sleigh, buggy, neckyoke, chains, and clevises2. Home and farm implements he made or repaired included sugar pan, hinges, meat hooks, chimney irons, shoe scraper, fork handle, thistle cutter and stove lids. In exchange for his services, John often accepted or bought wood, butter, apples, eggs, beef, oats, wheat, barley, pigs, or he accepted labor for threshing, digging potatoes, butchering or hauling manure.

Interspersed in the account book are some pages of interest to the genealogist. Page 155 contains John Gingrich's time-line from his birth on July 24, 1847 until 1883. Somewhat overlapping is another time-line on page 77 from his marriage on January 19, 1869, until his stroke in 1908. The births and marriages of John's and Mary's children are listed on pages 156 and 158 respectively. The family register of John's father-in-law, deacon William Hembling, is given on pages 112-113 and a short biography about how William Hembling was orphaned by the 1831 cholera epidemic and adopted by Isaac C. Shantz near Berlin.

John B. Gingrich was born on July 24, 1847 near Waterloo, Ontario, most likely in Woolwich Township, Waterloo County, to John H. Gingrich and Anna Burkhart. John became a blacksmith and kept a business ledger in which he also wrote family events and dates. John wrote that he went to school at age four in 1851 and finished school in 1863 at age 15. Starting in April of 1864 he worked on the farm and then was bound out as a blacksmith apprentice in November. In 1865 he read the entire Bible and joined the Mennonite Church on August 5 at age 18. In 1866 he was baptized in the Mennonite Church, probably by bishop Joseph Hagey. In 1867 he was a blacksmith in Preston and in November he worked in North Woolwich. In 1868 he worked on deacon William Hembling's sleigh and made an acquaintance with the deacon's daughter, Mary Hembling. Mary Ann Hembling was born July 17, 1851 near Waterloo, Ontario, the daughter of deacon William Hembling and Mary Dirstein. Mary was the eighth of twelve children. She was baptized in 1868 by bishop Abraham W. Martin. On January 19, 1869, John B. Gingrich married Mary Ann Hembling. After John and Mary were married they moved into David Brubacher's house on February 2, 1869 and John worked for David that year. On January 6, 1870 John moved to Floradale near the Grand River. In 1871 John was recorded in the Waterloo County Census of Ontario as being a 23 year-old blacksmith, a Mennonite and of German origin. Ten years later in 1881, he built a new blacksmith's shop. In 1883 John joined the Temperance People and the Mennonite Brethren Church (MBC). This was the year he recorded his blacksmith accounts in the subject account book. The following year in 1884 he moved to Sand Hills. Nine years later, on January 19, 1893, John moved to Berlin, now Kitchener. During this time, John and Mary had ten children: Isaiah, Noah, William, John, Josiah, Jesse, David, Mary Ann, Edwin (died in infancy), and Anna (died in infancy). Many of the sons used the middle initial of "H," possibly for the "H" in Hembling, their mother's last name.

On August 1, 1899, John B. Gingrich moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where his oldest son, Isaiah, had moved in 1891. Evidently, John moved to Grand Rapids and rented a house at 89 North Pine Street, not too far from his son Isaiah's house at 326 First Street. Mary stayed behind and had to be persuaded by an interesting letter from John that he cared deeply for her and wanted her to come and take the train to Grand Rapids.

From page 77 of the account book, we learn that John continued working at various factories in Grand Rapids until his "stroke of paralysis" at age 60 in January of 1908. On June 29, 1904 John Gingrich had gone back to Canada to bury the former deacon William Hembling. William Hembling had moved to Grand Rapids to be with his daughter and son-in-law and died there of paralysis and old age on June 27, 1904 at age 85. His remains were taken by train and he was buried in the Elmira Mennonite Cemetery, Woolwich Township. The costs of his funeral were listed on page 152 of the account book.

After his stroke, John Gingrich continued to earn income by becoming a "soap dealer." Pages 161 through 182 for the years 1909 through 1918 list the companies John bought supplies from for the business he operated out of his home on North Pine Street. He sold such items as Bonney Fleur perfume, laxative tabules, healing salve, vanishing cream, Red Rose toilet water, witch hazel cream and S.V. Soap.

John B. Gingrich died at the age of 72 on October 29, 1919 of kidney failure and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mary (Hembling) Gingrich died November 1, 1928 in Grand Rapids from a fractured hip and hardening of the arteries, at the age of 77. She also was buried by Rauschenberger in Greenwood Cemetery.

The John B. Gingrich "Account Book" provides us with a decade of information about the economic interactions which took place between a Mennonite blacksmith and many others who lived in Waterloo County in the late 1800s. These interactions between a blacksmith and his community of relatives and neighbours tell us of the tools, implements and services he provided, and the ways in which debts were settled. It provides us and their descendants with a rare glimpse of how they conducted business in the last century with the "village blacksmith

Gingrich.-Bishop Abraham B. Gingrich passed away peacefully at the home of his son near Baden, Ont., after a few days' illness due to a paralytic stroke; aged 81 y. 10 m. 27 d. On Sept. 9, 1877, he was married to Lydia Shantz. This union was blessed with 10 children, his wife and 2 children having predeceased him (Israel who died in infancy, and Lucinda, Mrs. Addison Snider, Elmira). These children survive: Cyrus, Ira, Addison, Irwin, and Mrs. Abram Snider, all of Guernsey, Sask.; Abram, Bridgeport; Angus, near Baden; Ida (Mrs. Henry Knoll), Elmira. Bro. Gingrich was ordained to the ministry at Floradale, Ont., Nov. 15, 1896, serving in that capacity for about ten years, when the call came for a bishop. He was ordained and served faithfully as long as he was mentally able. He left many landmarks and especially the German sermons which we all enjoyed so much. The funeral was held from the Drisinger funeral home, Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 23, with further services at the Elmira Mennonite Church. Bro. O. D. Snider preached from a prayerfully chosen text, Matt. 25: 21, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." Bro. Jonas Snider of Waterloo also took part in the service. Burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Bishop Gingerich Passes At Baden

Born In 1856, He Had Been Lifelong Resident of Waterloo County.

BURIED AT ELMIRA

(By Chronicle Correspondent) BADEN. On Sunday afternoon Bishop Abraham B. Gingerich died at the home of his son in Wilmot township, just three miles south of Baden. The deceased, who had al ways taken an active interest in church and community affairs, had been up and about his usual duties until just a few days before his death when he was stricken with a paralytic stroke.

Bishop Gingerich was born in Waterloo County in 1856, and for some years past has been elevated to the position of Bishop in the Mennonite Church where he was a staunch member.

In the year 1877 the late Mr. Gingerich was married, but his wife predeceased him by ten years.

To this happy union nine children were born. They are: Cyrus of Guernsey, Sask., Abraham of Bridge port, Ida, Mrs. Hy. Knoll of Elmira, sey, Sask., Angus of near Baden and Selina, Mrs. A. C. Snyder of Guern Mrs. Addison M. Snyder, who died a year ago at Elmira.

The remains were resting at Dreisinger's Funeral Home in Elmira from whence the funeral was held. Public service was held in the Elmira Mennonite Church with in terment in the adjoining cemetery.

Lunch was served in the basement of the church to mourners and relatives.

Gingrich.-Israel B. Gingrich was born Aug. 22, 1863, in Waterloo Co., Ont.; died Aug. 23, 1937; aged 74 y. 1 d. Throughout his life-time he was a resident of Waterloo County. Death was due to the after effects of a serious paralytic stroke of three years ago. In the intervening period he enjoyed rather good health, but three days before his death he again became ill. He became gradually weaker and passed quietly away. On January 3, 1888 he was married to Lovina Snyder. This marriage was blest with 8 children, only 5 of whom survive. Two sons and 1 daughter (Mrs. Menno R. Eby) predeceased him. There remain the mother in the home, 2 sons (Manasseh and Freeman). and 3 daughters (Leah, Mrs. Amos B. Gingrich, and Mrs. David B. Snyder) all of Waterloo, Ont. He was a member of St. Jacobs, Ont., Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held Aug. 26, in charge of Bros. Roy Koch and Jonas Snyder. Texts, were Rom. 6:23; Matt. 5:8.

MARTIN. - JESSE Martin was born in Woolwich Twp., Ont., Mar. 31, 1864. In early manhood he united with the Mennonite Church and lived a faithful Christian life until death. On Mar. 22, 1893, he was united in marriage to Mary Etta Wahl. To this union were born 2 sons and 3 daughters, who with their mother remain to mourn his sudden departure. Bro. Martin was called to the ministry and was ordained at Snyder's Mennonite Church on Feb. 15, 1903. He had been in failing health for several years, and though not considered serious, yet an attempt to give relief by operation at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital on Jan. 1, 1933, proved too much for his weakened condition and he peacefully fell asleep in Jesus about 11 o'clock Sunday fore-noon while his home congregation were engaged in worship. Funeral services were conducted by the brethren, S. F. Coffman and H. W. Stevanus. Nearly 1000 people gathered at the church to pay last tribute of respect to a good citizen, a fine neighbor, and a faithful Christian. Bro. Martin is gone to his eternal rest, but his testimony remains.

Boyer - Mary Ann, daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth (Sherk) Gingrich, was born near Preston, Ont., Jan. 2, 1868; died at her home near Biglerville, Pa., Dec. 24, 1945; age 77 y. 11 m. 22 d. Six years ago she suffered a stroke and her health gradually failed since that time, though she was not bedfast. On Christmas Eve she enjoyed opening the packages handed to her by her children and helped sing "Silent Night." A few minutes later she suffered another stroke and, without regaining consciousness, peacefully fell asleep. In 1897 she was united in marriage to Martin Boyer, who preceded her in death in 1937. Funeral services were held Dec. 28 from the Benter Funeral Home, Gettysburg, in charge of Paul Lantz, assisted by W. N. Zobler and A. W. Geigley

Boyer.--Martin Boyer was born Nov. 2, 1848, near Biglerville, Pa.; died Feb. 5, 1937, at the same place; aged 88 y. 3 m. 3 d. He was ill four days with a sever cold which developed into pulmonary pneumonia. Before death he realized that his end was near, and he gave eager expression to his longings for heaven. Those of his family and friends who heard some of his last words and saw the heavenly smile on his face as he left will long remember his peaceful passing. "I am nearing the port;" are some of the whispers caught from his lips during his last hours. Sacred memories indeed are these, bringing joy to us even as we weep. A mechanic by trade during his life time, he did clean, honest business for which he was highly respected. From the age of 14 he operated a saw mill, and later added to his business the manufacture of chairs, wooden rakes, water pumps, apple barrels; and finally fruit crates. He became a member of the Mummasburg Mennonite Church at middle age and was ordained deacon there on Christmas day, 1903. He served in this work the remainder of his life. In religious work he nevertheless showed a quiet, sincere concern for the welfare of the Church and its young people. He occupied his usual seat in church the last Sunday of his life, the day before he became ill. He was twice married, first in 1870 to Mary A. Raffensperger. From this union the following children survive: John, Gettysburg; Clayton, Harrisburg; Anna (Mrs J. W. Matthews), Elverson; Katy (Mrs. Joseph Albert), Gettysburg. In 1897 he was married to Mary Ann Gingrich, who with the following children survive: Retta (Mrs. Coffman Shenk), Washington, D. C.; Elton, Millersville; Nancy (Mrs. D. D. Shenk), Washington, D. D.; Joseph and Warren, Biglerville; Ida (Mrs. Ernest Bontrager), Midland, Mich.; Cora (Mrs. J. Warren Martin), Fairfield; Charles and Lena (foster) at home. He is also survived by 35 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Services were held Feb. 8 from the home with Bro. A. W. Geigley in charge and at the Mummasburg Mennonite Church by Noah H. Mack assisted by Brethren A. W. Myer and Roy Geigley. Texts, Rev. 14: 13; Job 5: 26. Interment in Mummasburg Mennonite Cemetery. Gingrich, Dilman S., son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Shirk) Gingrich, was born Oct. 8, 1875, in Preston, Ont.; died at his home near Freeport, Ill., on March 5, 1957; aged 81y. 4m. 27d. For almost three years he had been bedfast. During this extended illness he enjoyed visits of his friends and neighbors. On Nov. 17, 1904, he was married to Cora Ebersole, who died March 16, 1946. He was married again on June 21, 1948, to Barbara Bontrager, who survives. He also leaves one son (Willard) and one daughter (Lucille-Mrs. Gale Brown), both of Freeport; one brother (Enoch, Preston, Ont.), and 9 grandchildren. Just before going to Freeport, Ill., in his 21st year, he was converted under the ministry of John S. Coffman and became a member of the Hagey Mennonite Church, in which his father was a minister. In the Freeport community he became an active member of the Freeport Mennonite Church, serving as Sunday-school teacher, as a member of the board of trustees, and as church treasurer. Services were held in the Freeport Church on March 10 with Richard Yordy and A. C. Good officiating. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are a son (LeRoy, Winona Lake, Ind.), a daughter (Sylvia Elizabeth-Mrs. Wesley Baker, Elkhart), 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers (Enoch, Kitchener, Ont., and Dilman, Freeport, Ill.), and a sister (Mrs. Elizabeth Bingaman, Shabbona, Ill.). A son (Norman) preceded her in death. She was formerly a member of the North Goshen Mennonite Church. At the time of her death she was a member of the Tuttle Avenue Mennonite Church, Sarasota, Fla. Funeral services were held at the North Goshen Mennonite Church Nov. 4, with Myron Augsburger and Russell Krabill, officiating. Burial was made in the Shore Mennonite Church Cemetery.

GINGRICH.-On the 11th of January 1904, at Red Deer, Alta., of pneumonia, Samuel S., youngest son of Pre. Jacob and Sister Elizabeth (Sherk) Gingrich, formerly of near Preston, Ont., now of Biglerville, Pa., aged 30 Y., 4 M., 19 D. He was ill only a few days and his brother, Jacob S., was the only relative with him at the time, although the best care and skill were not wanting. He had lived in Red Deer since March 1903 and had won the esteem of a large circle of friends. Several years ago he spent some time in Elkhart, Ind., where he was converted, baptized and received into church fellowship. Another brother, Dilman S., of Freeport, Ill., reached Didsbury, Alta., on the 14th in time to attend the burial there, a number of former Waterloo Co. friends having settled in that locality. Funeral service on the 14th at Red Deer were conducted by J. C. Forster, assisted by Canon Hinchcliffe, Dr. Gaetz and Dr. Herdman of Calgary. The funeral was largely attended. Funeral services on the 14th in the West Zion Mennonite M. H., Carstairs, Alta., by Israel R. Shantz from 1 Sam. 20: 3, latter clause, and by N.B. Stauffer from Rev. 22: 12. Besides his parents and the brothers named he leaves his brother Norman S., of Mishawaka, Ind., Enoch of Preston, Ont., and his sisters Mary Ann and Barbara of Biglerville, Pa. Lizzie (Jacobs) of Goshen, Ind., and Nancy (Hostetler) of Elkhart, Ind. Our sympathies go out to the bereaved family in the loss of their bright and promising son and brother in the far Northwest. God comfort them in their sorrow.

MRS. SAMUEL MARTIN

Mrs. Samuel Martin passed away on Tuesday, May 2, in the K-W Hospital, where she had been taken some days ago to submit to an operation. She was 63. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gingerich. Surviving besides her husband are five sons, Edward of Elmira, Ibra of near St. Jacobs, Urias of Wallenstein, Norman at home and Samuel of Hawkesville, and four daughters, Mrs. David Frey, tenth line of Peel, Mrs. Menno Martin of Elmira, Miss Annie at home and Mrs. Elias Martin, tenth line Peel, and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Cressman, Wilmot township, and Mrs. Levi Bauman, Elmira. A brother Simeon, resides in Guersey, Sask. The funeral will be held from the family residence, on the Heidelberg highway, on Friday at 9 o'clock, and thence to Martin Mennonite church. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.<

Horst.-Mary (Martin) Horst, wife of David B. Horst, was born Dec. 31, 1875; died May 2, 1934; aged 58 y. 4 m. 2 d. She was baptized forty years ago. She was united in marriage March 15, 1898 with David B. Horst who survives her. On Jan. 18, 1899, they moved to Brutus, Mich., living there 18 years. This union was blessed with a family of five boys. Later they moved back to Waterloo Co., Ont., and had their home with our youngest son, Samuel M. Horst, where mother took sick in October with dropsy and a weak heart. She was ill for six months, but was in a wheelchair for a short time every few days. On May 2, she was wheeled out on the veranda to get some sunshine. She passed peacefully away without a word. She leaves a sorrowing husband and 5 boys: John M. Horst of Elmira, Ont.; Isaac of St. Jacobs, Ont.; Levi of Columbiana, Ohio; Samuel of Hawkesville, Ont.; and Henry M. Horst of St. Jacobs., Ont., also 9 grandchildren. She was laid to rest May 5 in Conestoga River Mennonite Cemetery, with services at the church.

Gingrich has developed from a most modest inception a large and prosperous industrial enterprise that is of much importance as touching and supplementing the general and diversified phases of the manufacturing industry that give Grand Rapids acknowledged pre-eminence along this line. The large and well equipped establishment of Mr. Gingrich is eligibly situated at 15-17 Market street, southwest, and has provisions for high-grade repair and construction work along all mechanical lines, special attention being given to the motor truck department of the enterprise, besides which Mr. Gingrich has the western Michigan agency for the celebrated Federal motor trucks. He has won success through his own ability and well directed activities and has gained place as one of the substantial business men of Grand Rapids, which city has represented his home since he was nineteen years of age. Mr. Gingrich was born in Floradale, Waterloo, county, Province of Ontario, Canada, May 7, 1870, a son of John B. and Mary (Hembling) Gingrich, and is a representative of a family that was founded in America more than two hundred and fifty years ago, the original ancestor having come from Germany and settled in Pennsylvania, whence representatives of the family later removed to the province of Ontario, Canada. In a somewhat limited way Mr. Gingrich was afforded the advantages of the public schools of his native province and he early gained fellowship with honest toil and endeavor. It is a matter of justified satisfaction to him that he has been one of the world's productive workers, and his is high appreciation of the dignity and value of honest labor. At the age of nineteen years he came to Grand Rapids and found employment with the Buss Machine Company. Later he was employed by the Leitelt Iron Works, and in these connections he effectively developed his natural mechanical ability. He continued to be employed as a skilled mechanic until 1909, when he rented a small place at 7 Fulton Street and established a shop for the handling of mechanical repair work of all kinds. The excellent and reliable service that the gave caused the little enterprise to expand continuously, and after the passing of two years he found it essential to obtain larger quarters. During the ensuing four years his shop was maintained in the Gentz building, near the present post office building, and the continued growth of his business then led him to erect at 216 Fulton street, southwest, a building 50 x 100 feet in dimensions, to which he later made an addition of the same dimensions on Market street, so that his establishment is now a large one, with mechanical equipment and accessories of the best modern order. With the wonderful development of the motor-truck usage Mr. Gingrich has found it expedient to utilize his establishment almost entirely in the repairing and re-equipping of such trucks, besides being agent for the Federal trucks, as previously noted. His sons, Arthur, Earl, Walter, Wilbur and Clarence, have all virtually grown up in the business, and they are now his efficient and valued assistants therein-young men who are an honor to their father and to their native city. Mrs. Gingrich, whose maiden name was Louise Raab, was born and reared in Allegan county, this state, where her, father, Adam Raab, settled in an early day.

Isaiah H. Gingrich

ELMIRA. --- Relatives have received word of the death of Isaiah H. Gingrich at Grand Rapids, Mich. Born in 1870 at Floradale, near Elmira, Mr. Gingrich learned the machinist trade at the plant of the Waterloo Manufacturing Company. He established the I. H. Gingrich and Sons, Inc., at Grand Rapids in 1911 and at the time of his death was chairman of the board of that firm. Stricken while returning from a holiday trip, Mr. Gingrich died at his Grand Rapids home. He is survived by his widow, the former Louise Raab, five sons, Arthur, Walter, Wilbur and Clarence, one daughter, Mrs. Julius VerSluis, six brothers, Noah of West Montrose, Jess of Canton, Ohio, David of Flint, Mich., William, John and Josiah, all of Grand Rapids, and 15 grandchildren.

NOAH H. GINGRICH

Noah H. Gingrich, 88, of Elmira died Wednesday, March 15, at the Elmira Private Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Floradale June 15, 1872, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Johnn B. Gingrich. He was married to the former Judith Bauman in 1892 who died in 1905. His second wife, the former Ida Musselman predeceased him in 1960.

Mr. Gingrich farmed near West Montrose for 48 years moving to Elmira In 1940. He was a member of West Montrose United Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Clayton D. (Susanna) Miller, RR 2, Elmira and Mrs. Nelson (Mary) Sugg, RR 2, West Montrose. Also three brothers, John and Josiah of Grand Rapids, Mich., and David of Grand Blanc, Mich., 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers. one daughter Salina and one son Sylvester.

The body was at the Dreisinger funeral parlor Elmira until noon Saturday when removal was made to West Montrose United Church where a memorial service was held. Rev. D. M. Badger officiated. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

A private service will be held at her home Wednesday at 1: 30 p.m. following by a public memorial service at the Elmira Mennonite Church with Bishop Oliver D. Snider officiating. He was born in Waterloo Township on May 27, 1879, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Weber.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Martin in 1960, two sons, one daughter, one brother and five sisters.

The body was at the Dreisinger funeral parlor in Elmira until Tuesday at 11 am when removal was made to the home of Simeon Weber, RR 2 Waterloo for service Wednesday at 9 am, followed by removal to Martin's Mennonite Meeting House for further service and burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Abram Bearinger, 67, of RR 1, Wallenstein, died Tuesday, April 29, K-W Hospital after a long illness.

The former Leah Weber, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Weber and was born in Waterloo Township.


Surviving besides her hus- band are four sons, Henry, Sidney, Noah and Amsey, all of RR 1, Wallenstein; two daughters, Mrs. Amon (Salome) Bauman of RR 1, Wallenstein and Mrs. Elam (Minerva) Wideman of RR 1, St Jacobs; three brothers, nine sisters and 26 grandchildren. Two sisters predeceased her.

The body rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Thursday at 9 a.m., when it was removed to the family home, where the funeral was conducted Friday at 8:30 a.m. EST. Service was conducted in South Peel Mennonite Meeting House. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

Through her illness, which lasted for nine months, she bore her sickness with Christian patience and was fully resigned to the will of God. She united with the Mennonite Church in her youth and was a faithful member until her death, Funeral services were conducted at the home by Bro. Reuben Dettwiler and assisted at the church by Bros. Jonas Snider and Roy Koch. Burial in the adjoining cemetery. Her last message to the dying world:

He served in various capacities in the local congregation. The funeral was held April 2 in the Cressman Mennonite Church with Oscar Burkholder as minister incharge. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

GUERNSEY, Sask., Funeral service for Mrs. Abram C. Snider of Guernsey, a former Elmira resident, who died at her home, was held at the Sharon Mennonite Church near here. St. Jacobs, June 12.\emdash The sudden death of Mrs. Menno Eby occurred Monday morning in her 45th year.

After leaving yesterday morning in a carriage with her husband in tending to help at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Snider who had lost their daughter Salome on Sunday, the late Mrs. Eby suddenly became sick and asked to be taken back home again but passed away before reaching home.

Besides her sorrowing husband she leaves to mourn four daughters, Barbara, Alemda, Lavina and Rebecca two sons, Ivan and Milton, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Israel Gingrich, three sisters, Leah, Susanah, Mrs. Amos Gingrich, and Barbara, Mrs. David Snyder, and two brothers, Manassah Gingrich and Freeman Gingrich.

Funeral sreviees [sic]will be held from her late residence to St. Jacobs Mennonite Church on Thursday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock. Remains will be interred in the Mennonite Cemetery on the Hawkesville road.

Manasseh Gingrich

The sudden death of Manasseh Gingrich, R.R. 1, Waterloo, occurred at his home Monday morning at the age of 56 years. Mr. Gingrich was a lifelong resident of Waterloo Township. He had been in ill health for a short time.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Herbert and Newton; two daughters, Naomi and Mary Ann; three sisters, Mrs. Addison Snider, Elmira, and Mrs. Amos Gingrich and Mrs. David Snyder, Waterloo and one brother, Freeman, of St. Jacobs.

The funeral will be held at the residence Thursday at 2 p.m., thence to St. Jacobs Mennonite Church. The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel, Elmira, until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

MRS LEAH SNIDER

Mrs. Leah Snider 65, of 10 James St., Elmira, died Sunday, August 16, at K-W Hospital after a brief illness. She was born June 1, 1894. in Waterloo township, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isreal Gingrich. She was a member of the Mennonite Church.

In 1939 she was married to Addison Snider. He died on. Oct, 30, 1950.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Amos (Susannah) Gingrich of RR 1, Waterloo, and Mrs. Barbara Gingrich of RR 2, Wallenstein. Four brothers and a sister predeceased her.

The body rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Wednesday at 1 p.m. then at the Elmira Mennonite Church for memorial service at 3 p.m. Burial was in adjoining cemetery. The Rev. Howard Bauman officiated.

Wendell Martin, Aged 48, Victim of Pneumonia. - Funeral Largely Attended.

Mr. Wendell Martin, aged 48 years, died suddenly on Sunday, a victim of pneumonia. The late Mr. Martin, who resides on the farm, the old homestead, just on the northern outskirts of Elmira was taken ill on Wednesday. He leaves to mourn him besides his wife, two sons and two daughters. His aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Martin, two brothers, Norman near Elmira and Amos near Floradale, four sisters, Mrs. Amos Martin of near West Montrose, Mrs. Oliver Shantz of near Yatton, Mrs. Amassa Martin of near Floradale and Mrs. Alvin Martin of near Waterloo.

The funeral took place on Wednesday morning from his late residence to the Elmira Mennonite Church for services. Interment was made in the Elmira Mennonite cemetery.

Suddenly, at her residence in New Dundee, on Friday, June 9, 2000, Orkney Hill, formerly of RR# 1, Preston. She was born in Bloomingdale, 88 years ago, a daughter of the late Rev. Jesse G. and Marietta (Wahl) Martin. Orkney had been employed as a receptionist in Psychiatry, at the K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, for ten years. She was a member of Olivet United Church, Kitchener. Orkney had served on the committee of Wilmot Home Support and the New Dundee Senior's Club. She loved the outdoors, enjoying cross country skiing and camp fires, with her family and hiking, swimming, canoeing and motor boating with her grandson Brad. Orkney was also a cat lover and her pal Toby, was by her side daily. She was a great lady with style and grace and always had a gleam in her eye. She will be remembered dearly by all her family. There was only one "Orkney". Beloved wife of Earl Toman, who she married in 1939 and who predeceased her in 1958 and Addison Hill, who she married in 1962 and who predeceased her in 1964. Loving mother of Nancy Toman (formerly Mrs. David Main) of Elmira and Mary Ann and her husband Dieter Lenz of RR 1, New Hamburg; lovingly remembered by grandson, Brad and his wife Maggie Main and great-granddaughter, Haley Marie Main. Orkney was predeceased by brothers and sisters, Lloyd and Alice Martin and Anson and Margaret Martin, Annetta and Alfred Connors and Ada and Jacob Ruby. Peacefully, at Fairview Mennonite Home, on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in her 93rd year. Cora, beloved wife of Harold, who predeceased her on September 17, 1981. Cora was born June 9, 1907, the middle of 12 children of Enoch Gingrich and Rebecca (Witmer). She grew up on the old Sherk farm, near the Pioneer Tower. An older brother, Cecil and three younger brothers, Arthur and his wife Marie, Clayton, Wayne and his wife Justine survive her. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Mildred Groh of Ottawa. Loving mother of David and Mary of Iowa, Mary Groh of Scarborough, Ruth and George Wiens of Kingston, Elizabeth and Rudy of Kitchener, John and Arlene of Waterloo and Deborah Groh and Stephen Bishop of Toronto. Cora leaves 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Cora was predeceased by two daughters, Eleanor and Joan and by a son-in-law, Glen Rudy. Mrs. Groh was a school teacher and pursued this profession both before and several times during her marriage. Cora and Harold married on June 29, 1929 and settled in Kingston, where their first child was born. Harold's subsequent activities as a minister, school teacher and administrator took them to Toronto, Chatham, Vineland, London, England and various places in Waterloo County. On retirement, they settled in Kitchener and attended First Mennonite Church. Cora is remembered by many people associated with the Toronto Mennonite Mission, by former teachers and students at Rockway Mennonite Collegiate, by members of the Wanner and Bloomingdale Mennonite Churches, international students and colleges associated with the London Mennonite Centre and many others privileged to meet her during her active life. Cora's family would like to thank, Fairview Mennonite Home, for providing 20 years of excellent care. The faintly will receive friends at the Fairview Mennonite Home, on Tuesday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.in. Following a private committal service, a memorial service will be held at First Mennonite Church on Wednesday. Jan. 12, 2000 at 2: 30 p.m.

Arnold Gingrich (1911-4 October 1970) was born near Preston, ON. He was ordained a Mennonite minister in 1935. He was pastor of the Bothwell Mennonite Church in Kent County, ON. (1935-60), when he moved to London, ON. He was president of the London Rescue Mission board (1960-64) and was field secretary for the Ontario Mennonite Mission Board (1961-69). in 1968 and 1969, he was president of the London Council of Churches, later called the Inter-Church Council. While at Bothwell, Gingrich conducted a weekly radio broadcast (World of Missions) on Chatham radio station CFCO. From 1969 until his death, he was executive secretary of the Ausable Springs Ranch, Ailsa Craig, ON. Gingrich was president of the London Folk Arts Council (1966-69) and member of the board of the Canadian Bible Society (1960-70). At his death he was survived by his wife Gladys (Shantz); a daughter, Ruth Gingrich of Bella Coola, BC; and a son, Paul Gingrich, of Ann Arbor, MI.

Cressman.- Amos Cressman, son of the late Osias and Anna (Gingerich) Cressman, was born near New Hamburg, Ont., May 6, 1893; died at his home near Haysville, Ont., Jan. 20, 1944, in his fiftyfirst year. He became a Christian in his youth and united with the Mennonite Church and enjoyed his Christian life. On Feb. 16, 1921, he was married to Clarcie Stager, the union being blest with 3 children. In his passing he leaves his sorrowing companion and 2 sons, Lester and Irvin, and one daughter, Vera, all at home. He is also survived by his aged mother, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters. They are: Mrs. Simeon Shantz, New Hamburg; Omar, Plattsville; Joseph, New Hamburg; Simeon, Preston; and Mrs. Willis Wideman, Stouffville. Bro. Cressman was of a quiet retiring disposition, a man of few words, kindly and sympathetic in his attitudes. Although the Lord has called him home and we shall miss him our loss is his eternal gain. Funeral services were held at his late home on Jan. 22, 1944, followed by a service at the Biehn Church where interment was made. The brethren Moses Roth and Curtis C. Cressman had charge of the services.

Succumbs After Being Run Over By Wagon

Amos Gingrich, 40 years old, a Fourth Line of Peel farmer, passed away in the K-W hospital in Kitchener early on Tuesday morning succumbing to injuries received when a wagon loaded with hay passed over his chest and shoulder on Saturday. The unfortunate accident happened at neighbor's when Mr. Gingrich went over to obtain a load of hay. The wagon had been backed into the barn, the load put on an just as Mr Gingrich picked up the lines and was half way up the front of the load the horses started forward. The jolt of the wagon going off the barn floor to the ground threw him down and the wagon wheels passed over his chest and shoulder. Injuries interal- ly were severe an one lung being puntcured (sic), a number of ribs crushed and a fractured collarbone and shoulder. He was alone at the time of the accident, a small boy with him during the loading had gone to get a drink of water. He was picked up by the neighbors and rushed to the hospital under the care of Dr. J. W. McQuibban, Elmira. He is survived by a wife and two small children.

GINGRICH, Magdalena (Frey) Magdalena was born May 1, 1923 and died December 6, 2011 at age 88 years. She is survived by a sister Hannah Gingrich Martin, and a brother Joseph Gingrich. She was predeceased by three sisters and eight brothers listed in order of age: Annie, Susannah, Israel, Martin, Norman, Osias, Salome, a stillborn brother, and Allen. Magdalena was baptized in the Old Order Mennonite Church in her teen years near Elmira, Ontario area. At age 43 she moved to the Red Lake area, joined the staff of Northern Light Gospel Missions and later became a member of Red Lake Mennonite Church. Her many friends simply knew her as Maggie. She enjoyed reupholstering old furniture or creating something special out of a forsaken object. A special delight for her was landscaping and caring for flowers. Funeral services were held at Red Lake Mennonite Church on December 12 officiated by Alvin Lapp and Henry Hostetler. Interment followed at the Red Lake Cemetery. Donations in Magdalena's memory may be made to Northwood Lodge through Herold Funeral Home, P.O. Box 237, Red Lake, Ontario, P0V 2M0. A special "thank you" to all who have helped with flowers, food, or your presence as we celebrated memories of Maggie together.
