Rev. Elias Snider "was born September 3rd, 1815. In his boyhood days he took great interest in his father's business. By the time he was twenty-one years of age he was not only a practical miller but also a thorough business man. In 1851 he purchased from the late Barnabas Devitt the large farm containing 310 acres of land, for Ð1500 and in 1853 he purchased the large grist mills now in possession of Wm. Snider & Co., together with 320 acres of land for Ð3500 In 1854 be again sold the large real estate in the town of Waterloo and purchased the "Musselman Farm" about one mile north of Waterloo, to which place he then moved. In 1860 he purchased the German Mills together with 669 acres of land. The same year he, in company with Samuel S. Schneider, regained possession of the Waterloo Mills and continued in business until 1879 when they sold out to the present proprietors. Mr. Snider now retired from business. On November 10th 1835, he was married to Hannah, daughter of John and Hannah (Bergey) Bingeman. She was born August 1st 1815, and died December 23rd, 1893. In 1874 Mr. Snider was ordained to the ministry of the Mennonite body which position he held until his death which took place April 24th, 1890. His family consisted of twelve children, "

Erb Street (David Eby) Mennonite Church

Early services which began around 1837 were held in private homes. Land at the corner of Erb Street and Hallman Road, where the present-day cemetery is located, was donated by David Eby Sr. on July 14, 1851; a red brick church known as David Eby's Church was built in the same year. The first minister in the new church was Jacob M. Oberholtzer who served from 1852 to 1874. He was followed by Elias Schneider (1874-1889), Jonas Snider (1892-1900), Newton Weber (1921-1923), and Noah Hunsberger (1923-1929).

Due to a difference of opinion in the David Eby congregation, Sunday School classes were held at first in a private home, that of Levi Groff, beginning in 1887. The dissension which resulted culminated in a division in the church in 1889; the minister, Elias Schneider, and the deacon, Menno S. Shantz, left the church and joined with the Old Order Mennonites of Woolwich Township. The following year, 1890, saw the commencement of "Edification Meetings", which were held in the homes of members of the David Eby congregation. These meetings later became the Young People's Bible Meetings.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, it was recognized that the church building was either in need of repair or in need of complete replacement. Consideration was given to building a new church on the same site or on a site on King Street North. A decision was made to accept from Samuel S. Snider the donation of a parcel of land which was also on Erb Street, but nearer town. Excavation of the foundation for the new church began in the Spring of 1902. A dedication service was held on August 17, 1902. A parsonage was built in 1929 on land donated by Herbert Snider, the son of Samuel Snider. The church building was renovated and enlarged in 1949-1950; a dedication service was held on April 9, 1950. Further renovations were made in 1974..

SNIDER.-In Waterloo township, Waterloo county, Ontario, on the 24th of April, Pre. Elias Snider, aged 74 years, 7 months and 21 days. Buried on the 27th at Martin's church, Waterloo township, where a very large concourse of relatives and friends had gathered, and on which occasion Paul Martin and Bish. Abraham Martin spoke from Psalm 126: 5, 6: and Luke 2: 29,30.

Historic Building:
The original portion of the Erb-Kumpf House was built around 1812 by Abraham Erb, the founder of Waterloo, making it one of Waterloo's oldest homes. It was a three-bay structure facing a mill situated near the south-west corner of King and Erb Streets.
Abraham Erb came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1806 and settled on Lots 14 and 15 of the German Company Tract, land which now comprises the central business district of Waterloo. He established a sawmill on Beaver (Laurel) Creek in 1808 and a grist mill in 1816. In 1828, he sold his mills and a considerable quantity of land to Jacob C. Snider.
Magdalene Erb sold the home to Barnabas Devitt, her adopted son, in 1835. His son Benjamin served as Mayor of Waterloo from 1881 to 1883.
An addition to the house was probably built by Devitt in 1849. A slight hump in the roof on the north side indicates the location at which it joins the original structure. The application of a vertical board and clapboard which does not align is further evidence that it was added at a later date. The second addition, probably built by Hoffman around 1855, included the two-storey verandah at the front.

Elias Snider acquired the home and later sold it to Christian Kumpf in 1869. Kumpf was a newspaper owner, Mayor of Waterloo from 1879-1880, as well as Postmaster for 42 years. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Dominion Life Assurance Company in 1889. His son Ford, who became affectionately known as "Mr. Waterloo", was born in the home in 1877 and assumed ownership in 1899. One of the community's most public-spirited citizens, he served as Treasurer of Waterloo and Clerk/Manager of the Water and Light Commission. He was President of the Waterloo Red Cross Society and The Dominion Life Assurance Company.
At present, the house demonstrates a mixture of architectural styles. Among its Georgian characteristics is the six-over-six window pane arrangement. The facade, with its two wings, treillage, Gothic barge board and Doric columns, reflects the Regency influence.
In 1979, the home was sold to a law firm which has maintained the integrity of the exterior. A third addition in keeping with the style of the building has since been constructed.<sup>1a

Kraft.--Mary Kraft, daughter of the late Elias and Hannah (Bingeman) Snider, was born in Waterloo, Ont., April 7, 1838; died Oct. 21, 1913; aged 75 y. 6 m. 14 d. At the age of 20 years she united in matrimony with Aaron Kraft, who died 16 years ago. To this union were born 6 children, 4 of whom died in infancy. Hannah and Mrs. Lehman Shirk with 2 grandchildren remain to mourn their loss, also 8 brothers and 1 sister. Ever since the death of her husband she had her home with her daughters in Waterloo, where she received the best of care. At the age of 16 years she united with the Mennonite Church, in which faith we believe she was true to the end. She suffered greatly the last few months from that dreadful disease, cancer. She bore her affliction in Christian patience, looking forward to the land where pain is unknown. Funeral services Oct. 24, conducted at the home by Bro. Noah Stauffer and at the Waterloo Church by Bro. Noah Hunsberger from John 16: 33, and Bro. Burns of the Evangelical Church from Heb. 4: 9. Buried at the Berlin Church.

Mr. Israel Snider, Well Known Waterloo County Farmer Passes Away Suddenly

LARGE FAMILY SURVIVES

Mr Israel Snider of near Crosshill brother of Mr William Snider and Mrs Aaron Kraft, Waterloo died very suddenly on Tuesday afternoon, being found dead in the field on his farm about three o'clock. Deceased although a sufferer from heart troubles for about a year, was able to attend to his duties and on the day of his death was feeling better then usual. After diner he went to the field with disc and team and about three o'clock it was noticed that his team was going about the field without a driver and on investigation Mr Snider was found dead. The late Mr Snider was born on the old homestead near Waterloo, now occupied by Bishop Jonas Snider. Previous to moving to the farm near Crosshill sixteen years ago he resided near Berlin, where he also followed the occupation of farmer. Deceased was in his 42nd year being born August 17, 1839. On October 16th, 1860 he was married to Veronica Martin who died June 7th, 1878. On January 14th 1879 he was again married to Mary Baetz who survives.. His family consists of eighteen children of whom the eldest eight were born unto his first wife viz: Noah, died in infancy, Nancy (Mrs Moses U. Clemens) Mariette Mich., Hannah (Mrs. Daniel E. Shantz) of Berlin, Veronica (Mrs. ?? B. Betzner) Berlin, Isaiah died a year ago [1910], Elizabeth (Mrs Frederick Fr??) Blair, Elias died at age of 5 years, Mary Ann (Mrs. Mrs O. Cobler) Sandusky, Mich. Sylvester, died in infancy, Jacob, Waterloo, Nelson and Aldon, Berlin, Alberta, Toronto, Israel, Waterloo, Elenora (Mrs. Jack Armstrong), Waterloo, Alice, Elma and Loretta, at home. The following brothers and sisters also survive: E.W.B. Snider, St Jacobs, William Snider, Waterloo, Bishop Jonas Snider of near Waterloo, Jacob, John and Isaac, German Mills, Tilman and Amos in Iowa, Mrs. Aaron Kraft, Waterloo, Mrs. Eph. Shantz, Didsbury, Alta. The funeral will be held on Friday at 11: 30 a.m. from his late residence near Crosshill to the Mennonite Church, Berlin for services and the East End Cemetery for interment. Many friends will morn with deep regret of the death of Mr. Snider who was well and favourably known throughout the County where he was an esteemed and respected residence. The bereaved have the sympathy of the community in their affliction.

Elias W. B. Snider, "was born June 19th, 1842. On April 19th, 1864, he was married to Nancy Weber. Mr. Snider is a miller by trade. In 1865 he took possession of the German Mills where he was engaged in doing a well paying business. In March, 1871, he purchased the St. Jacobs Mills where he has been doing an extensive and successful business ever since. Some years ago he also purchased the New Dundee Mills and has since been conducting both mills with the greatest of success. Besides being the proprietor of the two large mills, he has large interests in various other lines of business. In politics Mr. Snider favors the principles of the Liberal Party whose representative he has been in the Local House from June, 1881, (after Mr. Springer's resignation) until the dissolution of that body in 1894 when he declined to be again the standard bearer of the Liberal Party. He resides in St. Jacobs, Ontario. His family consists of the following children"

ELIAS WEBER BINGEMAN, miller, manufacturer, and politician; b. 19 June 1842 in Waterloo, Upper Canada, third son of Elias Snider and Hannah Bingeman; m. first 19 April 1864 Nancy Weber (d. 1912) in Preston (Cambridge), Upper Canada, and they had seven sons and four daughters (one son died in infancy); m. secondly 1915 Helen Shoemaker; d. 15 Oct. 1921 in Kitchener, Ont.

E. W. B. Snider left public school at the age of 12 to work on the family farm, but he shared his father's interest in milling and in 1860 began a two-year apprenticeship at the family's flour operation in German Mills (Kitchener). On its completion he became the manager of the mill and in 1864 he made an arrangement with his father to run it on a "shares" basis, which would allow him a measure of the profits. The Sniders expanded their holdings in 1868 to include a small mill at Berlin (Kitchener), but in 1871 Elias Jr set out on his own, purchasing a mill in St Jacobs. There he became the first Canadian to introduce roller milling to the industry. On the advice of John Braun (Brown), a former employee, he purchased a roller system from the Hoerde company of Vienna in 1875. This Walzenstuhle process replaced millstones with a slower but more efficient system of small rollers. The resulting product, which Snider called Walzen flour, represented a dramatic improvement in quality over traditionally milled flour and Snider was able to sell it widely, not only in Ontario but also in eastern Canada, the northeastern United States, and Britain. In 1876 he acquired a second mill, in New Dundee, where he also installed rollers. By the mid 1880s this operation and his Pioneer Roller Flouring Mill in St Jacobs were together producing 250 barrels a day.

The roller milling system was an early example of Snider's fascination with new technology and commercial opportunity. In 1884 he was attracted to the foundry business and purchased a works in Waterloo from Jacob Bricker, which he operated with Bricker's son Levi. Four years later the business was incorporated as the Waterloo Manufacturing Company Limited, with Snider and Absalom Merner, another foundry owner, as the major partners. This firm, of which Snider was president, would become famous for the manufacture of agricultural implements. The company expanded Jacob Bricker's line of threshers and retained his Champion trade mark. It also began to make steam traction engines under the Lion Brand trade name. The 1890s and the ensuing decade were good years for the company in the very competitive agricultural machinery business in Canada. By 1908 it employed 150 men and had 15 travelling salesmen, as well as branch offices in Winnipeg and Regina. Developing technology would restrict its success, however. The introduction of the gasoline tractor led to the replacement of steam as the motive power in agriculture by about 1925. Snider and his firm experimented with a gasoline tractor, but the expense, and American competition, caused them to abandon the project. In the early 1920s, after Snider's death, the introduction of an effective, reasonably priced combine harvester on the prairies threatened the company's future even more; it replaced both the tractor and the thresher, and thereby eliminated Waterloo Manufacturing's main markets. Snider's sons, now in control of the company, sold the firm to Playfair and Company of Toronto in 1927.

From 1881 to 1894 Snider had sat as a Liberal for Waterloo North in the Ontario legislature. He concentrated on expanding municipal powers through his work on municipal assessment and a municipal fire insurance act. Later in his term he became interested in forest preservation and lobbied for the creation of reserves. He would maintain this interest long after leaving politics, publishing an article on the depletion of forests in Waterloo County in the report of the Waterloo Historical Society in 1918. In the federal election of 1896 Snider ran against Conservative Joseph Emm Seagram* in Waterloo North. This was an industrial riding and Snider, though himself a protectionist, bore the cross of the Liberals' free trade policy. The local Conservative paper called on him to "be a man." "Declare that you will either support [Wilfrid Laurier*] and Free Trade or Joseph Seagram and Protection." The voters preferred Seagram.

Snider experienced success in the manufacturing and milling fields. He also dabbled in railway promotion, with the Waterloo Junction Railway, and the sugar-beet industry. Among his other interests were the Toronto Foundry (later the Anthes Foundry), the Snider Lumber Company of Waterloo Limited, which operated mills at Gravenhurst, and the Canada Felting Company Limited of St Jacobs.

Snider is best known for his role in the introduction of public electricity to Ontario. An early convert to the benefits of electricity, in 1894 he had installed a generator at his mill in St Jacobs which also provided power to homes in the town. In 1900 he joined with Daniel Bechtel Detweiler and Joseph Bingeman to form a company to generate power for mines north of Lake Superior. The Michipicoten Falls Power Company Limited was an early success and convinced Snider of the importance of hydroelectric power for industry. In February 1902 he called upon business and community leaders in the area around Berlin to meet and discuss the most effective way to ensure that power generated at Niagara Falls would be made available to businesses and homes in the province. A subsequent meeting in June struck a committee, chaired by Snider, to consider the matter. Snider and Detweiler, the publicist, researcher, and jack-of-all-trades for the venture, spoke to many municipal and business leaders as well as to the Niagara power companies. At a further meeting in February 1903 it was decided to lobby the provincial government either to build transmission lines as a public work or to authorize the municipalities to do so. The government of George William Ross* responded with legislation enabling local governments to proceed. On 12 August Snider became the chair of the Ontario Power Commission, which represented seven municipalities and whose members included London mayor Adam Beck and other leaders. Its report in March 1906 recommended that a cooperative of municipalities construct and operate both a generating and a transmission system for Niagara hydroelectric power. The report was, however, superseded by that of a second commission, appointed in 1905 by the new government of James Pliny Whitney* and chaired by Beck; its recommendation in April 1906 of a provincially owned system carried the day. Four years later Premier Whitney went to Berlin to throw the switch that launched Ontario's hydroelectric system. Snider's role in this development faded from public memory, replaced in great measure by Beck's. In the early 1930s his son William Weber began to lobby the provincial government of George Stewart Henry* to recognize Snider's contribution. This campaign eventually resulted in 1956 in a monument to Snider at St Jacobs and in official recognition from the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario.

Snider died in 1921 in Kitchener, where he had gone to live after his second marriage. A member of the Evangelical Association, he was laid to rest in the St Jacobs cemetery. He had enjoyed great success in his life by embracing new technology: a new method of milling flour, new machinery for agriculture, and a new system for delivering electricity.

E. W. B. Snider

Elias Weber Bingeman Snider was born in the town of Waterloo on June 19th, 1842. His parents were Rev. Elias Snider and Hannah Bingeman. His father was interested in farming, and in flour and saw mills in Waterloo town and township. He was a member of the Mennonite Church, in which he was ordained to the ministry in 1874, when quite an elderly man. Associated with Jacob Y. Shantz and others, Elias Snider took great interest in getting Russian Mennonites to settle in Manitoba, from 1872 to 1874.

A most interesting heirloom, now in the possession of Mr. W. W. Snider, an old Swiss Family Bible, printed in 1560, and purchased by Johannes Schneider in 1564 in Switzerland, records that a descendant, a Johannes Schneider, emigrated to Pennsylvania, then a British colony, in 1736. Mr. Snider's great grandfather was born in Pennsylvania in 1758, and emigrated to Canada in 1806, locating in Waterloo township, then nothing but a wilderness.

Mr. Snider received the rudiments of a public school education, but started to work on his father's farm, near Waterloo town, at the age of 12 years, and continued there until his 18th year. In 1860 he began his apprenticeship in his father's flour mill at German Mills, and made himself so familiar with the details of the business, that when he was 20 years old he was promoted to be manager of the mill. In October of 1864 he arranged with his father to run the German Mills on shares, which was continued for some seven years. In January, 1871, Mr. Snider ventured out for himself by purchasing the flour mill at St. Jacobs, where he removed his young family, and where he continued to make his home for some 44 years. Previous to moving to St. Jacobs, Mr. Snider had in his employ a miller by the name of John Braun, of German extraction, who furnished Mr. Snider with a great deal of information regarding milling processes then existing in Austria and Germany. From a business friend, Mr. W. M. Stark, of Toronto, Mr. Snider received further information, as also his first samples, milled in Hungary, of the roller process flour. With this knowledge the keen perception of Mr. Snider foresaw the great possibilities that were open to those who would lead in the transformation of the milling industry from the short process of grinding with mill-stones, to the gradual reduction system, as by the Roller Process, which patience, time, and hard work were to make possible.

With this object in view, Mr. Snider early in the year 1875 corresponded with the firm of Hoerde and Co., of Vienna, Austria, and on April 26th of the same year, placed the order for what was (as far as known) the first Roller Process machine which was imported into America. This machine was shipped on Sept. 22, 1875, via Hamburg, Germany, to Guelph, Ont., reached its destination on October 20th, 1875, and was installed in the St. Jacobs flour mill. The price of the machine was £114, 11s, ld, with freight charges of £16, 13s, 5d, and a duty of $57.64.

The German name for the machine was "Walzenstuhle," and from this name Mr. Snider appropriated the title "Walzen" for his choicest brand of flour, which for many years commanded the best prices in many markets. This flour proved of such good quality and so superior to the old stone process that an extraordinary demand was created, not only in Ontario and the Maritime Provinces, but also in the New England States, and for export.

It must not be assumed that the importation of this machine from Austria overcame the flour-milling problems. It only opened up greater possibilities. Improvements were the order of the day for years to come, and Mr. Snider, ever on the alert for further advancement, always installed the latest improved machinery. For this reason a staff of mil-wrights was constantly employed, and while the flour-milling industry was the nucleus of Mr. Snider's fortune, it can be truthfully said that many fortunes had to be sacrificed in the transition stages of the industry in the scrapping of machinery, as what was installed one year proved obsolete a year or two later.

One instance of the pioneer miller's difficulties may be cited. The object of the miller was to produce more and more good quality middlings, or "grits" as it was called in the early days, from which the best white flour was made. In those days there were no elevators to lift and discharge the products from the various machines, and the product was caught in bags, and put through the same machine five or six times before the reduction was of the right fineness for the best quality of flour. In other cases the product was caught in bags in the basement of the mill and carried up several flights of steps, and poured into a hopper feeding the next machine. To transform the milling industry from this primitive stage through all its phases to present conditions, was a stupendous task, and many millers fell by the wayside in the struggle, but those whose vision was clear and efforts tireless were amply re-warded. That Mr. Snider made a success of his flour-milling operations is well known and needs no comment.

After the transition period from the stone to the roller process from about 1875 to 1895, milling machinery became more or less standardized, and the fundamental principles being laid only minor changes have been made since that time. In 1884 Mr. Snider embarked upon another enterprise when he bought the foundry in Waterloo from Jacob Bricker, and entered into a co-partnership with Levi Bricker, which continued to 1894. At this time arrange-ments were made between E. W. B. Snider and Absalom Merner and others to incorporate the Waterloo Manufac-turing Company, amalgamating the Bricker foundry and the Merner foundries in Waterloo and Elmira. Mr. Snider was chosen President of the new company and held the position continuously until his death. The business has been gradually concentrated on King St., Waterloo, where the Bricker plant has been greatly enlarged, and where from 150 to 200 men are employed in the manufacture and sale of engines and threshing machinery.

In the early days all the products of the St. Jacobs mill had to be teamed to Waterloo station, and to overcome that haul Mr. Snider promoted the Waterloo Junction Railway, now a part of the Grand Trunk System. Among other interests during his active career he was president of the Anthes Foundry, Toronto; president of the Snider Lumber Co., Gravenhurst; vice-president of the Ontario Sugar Co., Kitchener, in 1904; director of the Niagara Peninsula Power and Gas Co., St. Catharines; but perhaps the greatest achievement of which his friends are justly proud, was the part he had in originating our present hydro power system. He may well be termed "the Father of Hydro Power," for at the banquet of the Waterloo Board of Trade on Feb. 11th, 1902, Mr. Snider predicted that the majority of those present would see the day when our streets and homes would be lighted, and the machinery of our factories supplied, with power generated at Niagara Falls. The prediction was received with a skeptical smile by many present, but we have lived to see the vision more than realized. In the meantime Mr. Snider did a great deal of preliminary investigating regarding the developing, transmitting, and distributing of Niagara power, and the Ontario Power Act, passed June 4th, during the session of 1903, gave municipalities power to act along these lines. Accordingly representatives from some nineteen munici-palities met in Berlin July 9th, 1903, and after a thorough discussion they appointed a committee consisting of E. W. B. Snider, chairman, R. MacGregor, A. Beck, P. W. Ellis, C. H. Waterous, G. McLagan and L. Goldie. This com- mittee met in Toronto July 16th and decided to ask all municipalities interested to send delegates to meet them at the City Hall, Toronto, August 12th, 1903. This was really the organization meeting of "The Ontario Power Commission," of which Mr. Snider was chairman and J. C. Haight, secretary. Meetings were held from time to time during the next three years and the interest grew apace. The last meeting of the Commission was held at 7 to 9 King St. East, Toronto, Sept. 20th, 1906, when at its conclusion, on motion of W. F. Cockshutt and P. W. Ellis, a hearty vote of thanks was tendered the chairman, Mr. Snider, for the assistance and guidance which he had rendered to the Commission as its presiding officer, and for the very large share he had contributed towards making the work of the Commission a success. From that time the work was taken up by the Ontario Government, and "E. W. B." remained an ardent observer of the success it has been.

Being a very busy man commercially, Mr. Snider yet found time to be interested in the municipal affairs of his native county, and although never a member of a municipal board, we find him active in a wider sphere as Liberal member for North Waterloo in the Provincial Legislature for 13 years, 1881 to 1894, when he declined renomination. During his parliamentary term at Toronto his interests centered around a Municipal Fire Insurance Bill, an amendment to the Assessment Act and to Forest Reservation and Preservation. In the noted election of 1896, Mr. Snider upheld the cause of Liberalism in North Waterloo in a contest for the Dominion Parliament, against the late Joseph E. Seagram, in which he was unsuccessful.

Mr. Snider's varied interests often took him far afield, yet he was a real home man, fond of domestic and cultural accomplishments, sociable, and approachable on any subject tinged with human welfare. On the 19th of April, 1864, he married Nancy Weber at Preston and resided at German Mills until they moved to St. Jacobs in 1871. Of this there survive ten out of eleven children, seven sons and four daughters - Clara, Aldred, Cranson, Fernando, William, Edwin, Elias, Ada, Franklin (deceased), Lola and Amy. Mrs. Snider died in 1912. In 1915 Mr. Snider married Helen Shoemaker and took up his residence at 181 Frederick St., Kitchener, where he kept up an active interest in his business, social and religious relationships to the last. One of his last public contributions was an elaborate article on "Waterloo County Forests and Primitive Economics," which appeared in the 1918 Report of the Waterloo Historical Society, and during the last few months of his life he devoted considerable attention to the matter of erecting a suitable monument to the memory of the first pioneers of 'Waterloo County, who are buried near Doon. He died at his home in Kitchener on Saturday evening, October 15th, 1921, after about two weeks' illness, in his 80th year. A great concourse of friends and relatives paid tribute to his memory at the funeral services held in Zion Evangelical Church, Kitchener, on Wednesday after-noon, October 19th. Interment was in Calvary Church Cemetery, St. Jacobs, amid the scenes he loved best.

E. W. B. Snider had vision as well as courage, initiative and faith in his native land. He gave a large measure of valuable citizenship to Canada during a long term of 60 years of business and public life. Replete with good acts, and of sympathetic nature, his life was an inspiration to those who knew. him best; and to a wider circle it was the mainspring of a prodgious undertaking in behalf of the public.

In the year 1871 I was sent out to this office from our London, England, firm to establish a flour business with Canada. About 1872, while on a visit to the Rev. Mr. Boyd, of Crosshill, I was introduced to Mr. E. W. B. Snider of St. Jacobs, where he was running a mill. As our London firm, Stark & Bruce, represented in Great Britain some half dozen of the big flour mills of Vienna and Budapest, I brought out to this country samples of their flour, which was the finest product known up to that date, and when I showed these samples to Mr. Snider he became so interested that he wanted to know from me what mills made the flours and what their process was. I mentioned that they were all roller mills, and gave him the address of several of them. Eventually he received a Milling Journal giving him the information required, wrote to the manufacturers of the milling machinery, and duly im-ported the machinery. He experimented with it for some time before he could get it to work and then succeeded in producing a flour very much superior to what he had hitherto been able to make on the stones, and I was able to get considerable of his product for shipment to our London firm. I believe he was the first miller on this continent to import rolls. I visited the big mills in Minneapolis a short time after and they had nothing of that nature; they still ground on stones.

I may say that I knew Mr. E. W. B. Snider for many years and thought him one of the most progressive business men in Canada. He seemed to be the first to take up any new scheme and invariably succeeded in his efforts. I considered him one of the most modest, unassuming and strictly honest men that I have met in this country^.

E. W. B. SNIDER, M.P.P., of St. Jacob's, is a son of Elias Snider. who was among the early residents of Waterloo Village, where the subject of our sketch was born in 1842. After arriving at manhood he spent a number of years operating the extensive milling establishment at German Mills, Waterloo Township; but about ten years since he purchased the large mills at St. Jacob's, which he has conducted with success ever since, in connection with other mills in New Dundee. Mr. Snider has spared sufficient time from business affairs to become familiar with the leading political problems, and to keep himself fully abreast of the times in his information on all public topics. Has taken a leading and practical interest in the various political campaigns the county, on the Liberal side of the question, and in June last was nominated and elected by that party to the seat in the Ontario Legislature rendered vacant by the resignation of Moses Springer, the former member.

Waterloo Foundry, Bricker & Co., King Street, Waterloo - Was established by Mr. Jacob Bricker, father of the present senior member of the firm. It was started in a comparatively small way, and it required untiring exertions and a lively spirit of enterprise to build it up to important proportions; but those qualities were not wanting, as the result achieved testified. The business is now conducted by Messrs. Levi Bricker and E.W.B. Snider, under the firm title of Bricker & Co. The 38 years that have passed since the founding of the business have seen many extensions in the buildings to accommodate the increasing trade, until to-day their extent is as follows: Main building, 45x100 feet in dimensions and two stories in height; moulding shop and engine room, 50x80 feet, one story; blacksmiths' shop, 30x40 feet, one story; paint shop, 30x50 feet, one story frame; and implement shed, 34x100 feet, one story frame. In these employment is furnished to 40 skilled and competent workmen. The firm manufactures a general line of agricultural implements, including reapers, mowers, binders, threshers and hay binders, besides general job work and repairing. The work turned out at this foundry is of the very best description, superior in quality and perfect in finish, which has been the main cause in building up and retaining their extensive trade. The annual output of the concern is over $40,000. Both members of the firm are natives of Canada; Mr. Bricker, the senior member, being the practical man and supervising the work, while Mr. Snider attends to the financial and business affairs, the latter gentleman being a representative of the North Riding of Waterloo in the Local House. The industry they conduct is alike creditable to themselves and the town of Waterloo.

This gentleman needs no introduction to the within the scope of The Chronicle circulation at least, for he is so widely identified with important industrial enterprise, and his long and favorable career as one of our provincial legislators in such convincing evidence of his popularity among his constituents, that any eulogistic remarks from the CHRONICLE scribe would seem superfluous. But regardless of the honors and success heaped upon him he is a plain every-day man and is the last person to court newspaper notoriety , consequently, this sketch goes out unsolicited by him. I simply wish to give The CHRONICLE readers a synopsis of this long business career. It is not in the spirit of vain flattery that I do this, but it is merely for reflection - what some men can accomplish, where others fail who have the same opportunities before them. The flouring mills of which Mr. Snider is sole owner, were erected in 1851 by the late Jacob Snyder for his son Jacob. The mills were acquired by the present proprietor February 1^st 1871, and it is now known as the Pioneer Roller Process flour mill. It received this name in 1875 when he imported a roller process mill from Messrs. Hoerde & Co. of Vienna, Austria, the first roller process machinery brought into and operated in the Dominion. Prominent millers from New York and Minnesota come here to see it work and soon afterwards adopted it also. But this also soon was out of date and Mr. Snider, ever on the alert to keep up in the race for improvement in mill machinery abandoned the old and introduced the new. The difference was, the old process consisted of one reduction on mill stones, while the new or gradual reduction system by making from two to four reductions to finish the product of the wheat. Mr. Snider was for about ten years in charge of the German Mills below Berlin where be attained practical ideas in flour making while under the instructions of a German miller by the name of John Brown. Ever since the old process was abolished he has kept on remodeling and improving his mill until to-day it is one of the best equipped country mills in the Province. The constant increasing patronage demanded new and more modern methods. There are now six double sets rollers, five 9x24 and one 9x30. Such extensive improvements were made in 1896 that the mill was actually rebuilt. In the same year he added the Plan Sifter for bolting. The mill has a capacity for grinding 150 barrels per day. While running on full time it is capable of grinding 150,000 to 175,000 bushels of wheat per annum. They have ground 35,000 bushels of wheat this season since September, and at this writing have about 30,000 bushels on hand. They have used thousands of bushels of Manitoba wheat for their Lower Province trade. The bulk of their shipments this year have been to Glasgow, Liverpool and Belfast. Mr. Snider was the first miller in this section to export flour to the British Isles. The first export shipment was in February 1874, to London, England, when the freight was $2.07 per barrel at the present time 60 cts. per barrel is considered a stiff price. Their export trade has gradually increased. For the past two months they have exported to the old country 6,500 sacks of flour of 140 pounds each. This mill has abundance of power, there being from 65 to 70 horse power steam, and water sufficient for 100 horse power. The mill at present is in the hands of a first class miller, Mr. E F.Mielke who was for eight years in Mr. Snider's mills in New Dundee. The power of the St. Jacobs mille is also utilized in furnishing 100 electric lights for Mr. Snider's residence, the mill and the business men of the village. This feature was introduced in 1894. Besides being proprietor of this establishment Mr. Snider is a large stock-holder in and is President of the Waterloo Manufacturing Co. Limited, and President of the Snider Lumber Co., who have a saw-mill at Gravenhurst with a capacity of turning out from 35,000 to 40,000 feet of lumber per day. He also owns the New Dundee mills and has a large mill in Iowa . He also has part interest in the St . Jacobs glue factory and is owner of a foundry in Toronto. He has six sons who are valuable assistants to him in the management of his vest business interests. Aldred and Edwin are at Gravenhurst, Cranson, with the Waterloo Manufacturing Co, Fernando at New Dundee and William and Elias at home. Mr. Spider was born in Waterloo in 1842, and has followed the milling business since he was 18 years of age, commencing at German Mills. He was elected to the Ontario Legislature in June, 1881, and was a member of the same for thirteen sessions. He was returned by three contests and once by acclamation. He was the promoter and president of the railroad, and it was particularly through his instrumentality that the road was put through from Waterloo to Elmira

When a young man he entered his father's mills in the town of Waterloo where he served his apprenticeship as miller and has been connected with the mills ever since. In 1879 he, in company with Mr. A. Kraft, purchased the valuable mills (known as Union Mills) from his father and has since built additions to it and has made improvements in the latest and most improved machinery so as to have a daily capacity of nearly 300 barrels of flour of the most superior quality. He has served his town and county in the municipal council for a number of years, serving in the capacity as councillor for seven years, reeve for three years, warden of the county one year, and mayor for two years. WILLIAM SNIDER, Warden of the County of Waterloo, is one of the most enterprising and progressive business men of Waterloo, the town of his present residence as well of his birth, which event occurred in 1845. He is a son of Elias Snider, whose connection with the milling interests of this town have been before adverted to. William is one of a family of twelve children, eight of whom were sons. He learned the milling trade in his youth, and has ever since continued his connection therewith, being senior member of the firm of William Snider & Co., whose business is extensive and successful. Mr. Snider has been for some years an active participant in municipal affairs, as a result of which he now holds the Wardenship of the county ; and in all other matters of local or general interest, he has ever made his influence felt in promoting the material, intellectual or moral status of the community in which he resides.

A list of Snider's business involvement suggests his influence within the community. He was president of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company, director for 10 years of the Mutual Life Assurance Company (Clarica), and vice-president of Waterloo Manufacturing Company. He was a charter member of the Waterloo Board of Trade, a member of the Waterloo Horticultural Society and sat on the Waterloo Board of Park Management from 1890-1906. Snider first served on village council beginning in 1873. He continued as alderman for another two years when the Town of Waterloo was incorporated in 1876. From 1878-1881 Snider held the position of town reeve. He was elected mayor in 1885-1886 and again in 1891-1892. During his two terms in office, Snider was instrumental in establishing a weekly market in the basement of the Town Hall, in creating a formal Town Fire Company and in securing the installation of gas lighting. Under his guidance, Council also approved a proposal by the town's first mayor Moses Springer to commission portraits of former mayors for display in the Council Chambers. SNIDER. John Snider was born in Waterloo, Ont., Dec. 24, 1848; passed peacefully away Feb. 15, 1930; aged 81 y. 1 m. 22 d. On June 5, 1870, he was united in marriage to Magdalena Snyder, who preceded him in death Oct. 3, 1900. On Aug. 12, 1903, he was married to Lydia E. Bergey, who also preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 1925. To the first union were born four children, two daughters (Hannah and Almina) dying in infancy. Those who remain are two sons, (Ephraim and Urias), and eight grandchildren. Bro. Snider had the joy of seeing all his children and grandchildren converted and unite with the Mennonite Church. He was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years. He was patiently waiting and longing to leave this world, and to go home to be with Jesus. Funeral services were held on the 18th at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, in charge of Bros. O. Burkholder and Jesse B. Martin. Text, Isa. 3: 10, 11. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

T. B. SNIDER, Deputy Reeve of Waterloo Township, is a son of Elias Snider, and brother of E. W. B. Snider, M.P.P., and reckons among his ancestors some of the pioneers of this county, to whose efforts its development to its present high status is largely attributable. He was born in Waterloo Village in 1850, and there he grew to manhood. At the age of nineteen he assumed control of his father's extensive flouring mills, and later became a partner with his brother, A. B. Snider, in operating the large German Mills, an establishment which has been in commission about sixty years. He also participates in the promotion of agricultural matters, and has been largely instrumental in the improvement of the farm stock of the county by the importation of choice beasts from abroad. He has taken part as well in the conduct of municipal matters for several years past, and is now serving his third year in the township Council in the capacity of Deputy Reeve.

Snider.-Jacob B. Snider passed away at his home in German Mills, Ont., May 18, 1936; aged 83 y. 4 m. 8 d. Although failing in health his death came very unexpectedly. He was united in marriage to Susannah Shantz. To this union were born 7 children-Mrs. Frank Honsberger (deceased), Mrs. Isaiah Cressman. Alvin, Aeton, Ion, Harvey, and Floyd. Besides his children left to mourn his loss are many friends, 3 brothers, 1 sister, 33 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren. Bro. Snider was a member of the Weber Mennonite Church, Strasburg, Ont. He was a faithful Christian and helped in the work of the Lord whenever he could. Services were held Thursday, May 21. Bro. Simon Martin conducted services at the home and Bro. C. F. Derstine and J. "Bishop Jonas Snider, RR1Waterloo, has received word of the death of his sister Hannah, widow of the late Ephraim Shantz, at Didsbury, Alta., on Dec. 16. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Abner Hunsperger.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Abner (Selina) Hunsperger, and Mrs.(Elsie) Hunsperger, both of Didsbury, and one son, Burton, Alberta. The funeral was held Dec. 19 at the MBC Church, Didsbury, with Interment in the adjoining cemetery."

MRS. HANNAH SHANTZ

The funeral of Mrs. Hannah Shantz, aged 85 years, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alvin Hunserger, on Wednesday, December 16, was held at the M.B.C. Church on Saturday last.

Hannah Snider Shantz was born in Waterloo County, Ontario, April 23rd, 1857. She was married to Ephraim Shantz in 1873. She was one of the earliest settlers in the Didsbury district coming here with her husband and family in 1894 with a train load of settlers from Waterloo County, Ontario. At that time, with the exception of a few ranches there was no settlement in this district. Since that time, she has lived continuously in the district and witnessed its transformation from the bald prairie to a prosperous farming country.

She was a member of the M.B.C. Church and was an ardent worker with the church at Didsbury since its inception.

She was predeceased by her husband 21 years ago, shortly after they had built their home in town.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Abner Hunsperger and Mrs. Alvin Hunsperger, both of Didsbuy and a son Bert, of Alsask, Sask. Also two brothers, Amos Snider of May City, Iowa, and Jonas Snider of Waterloo, Ontario.

The service was held in the MBC church at Didsbury, by E. T. Archer."

On June 24th, 1892, he was ordained to the ministry of the Mennonite Church. His sermons are characterized by ability and great faithfulness and are well received by his congregation and others. As a minister he is a diligent and faithful worker and pursues his calling with great devotion, doing good unto all. Snider.-Jonas Snider was born near Waterloo, Ont., Oct. 2, 1858; died after a lengthy illness, at his home, Waterloo, Sept. 6, 1944; aged 85 y. 11 m. 4 d. On April 1, 1875, he was married to Lucy Ann Snyder, who predeceased him in 1886. On July 5, 1887, he was united in marriage to Susanna Horst, who passed away in 1933. He is survived by 8 sons (Edgar, Clayton, and Delton, Waterloo; Addison and Walter, Bridgeport; Omar, New Dundee; Benjamin, Woodstock; and Gilbert, near Waterloo), 2 daughters (Clara and Hannah, at home), 30 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one brother (Amos, of Iowa).

Many incidents and experiences of interest were connected with Bro. Snider's life. His grandfather, Jacob C. Snider, was a pioneer of Waterloo County. He came from Pennsylvania and engaged in the sawmill and flour mill business at Waterloo. His father, Elias Snider, was a minister in the Mennonite Church.

In 1885 a wonderful revival was experiences in Waterloo County. It was not the custom of the church to have evangelistic services in the churches. A number of brethren, among them Noah Stauffer and Solomon Gehman, preached the Gospel in private homes, and many were converted. Among these converts was our departed Bro. Snider. At that time Sunday schools were not held in the church houses. In 1887, in a private dwelling owned by Levi Groff (at present the home of Bro. Snider's son, (Clayton), a Sunday school was organized, and the brethren Levi Groff and Jonas Snider were chosen as superintendents. The workers in this Sunday school labored faithfully in spite of opposition, and under the blessing of God the school outgrew its quarters. It was then held in Martins Schoolhouse, and finally in the David Eby Church.

On June 24, 1892, Bro. Snider was ordained a minister in the David Eby Church, now the Erb St. Mennonite Church, Waterloo. On Nov. 17, 1895, he was ordained bishop. In his church record book he wrote: "Nov. 17, 1895 at the Cressman Church ordination services were held to ordain a bishop to assist Bishop Elias Weber in his field of labor, when it again pleased God to let the lot fall on me." He held this office until the Lord saw fit to call him home. At his request the conference released him form his major responsibilities as bishop in 1935. During his ministry he filled many preaching appointments, and two or three days with horse and buggy were often required to make the round trip. Among these appointments were : Mosa (Bothwell), Glen Allen, Port Elgin, Hanover, Rainham and South Cayuga, Wallace, Zurich, Clarence Center, N.Y., and Berne, Mich. The congregations in his bishop district were: Waterloo, Kitchener, Snyder, Cressman, Wanner, Hagey, and Weber's. Bro. Snider officiated at many ordination services. He preformed two hundred and forty-two wedding ceremonies. His baptismal records are not complete, but up to 1919 he had baptized over six hundred people. In the conference district his name will long be remembered. At the close of his ministry we can say in the words of Scripture: "After he had served his own generation by the will of God, [he] fell on sleep." (Acts 13: 36). "I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing" (11 Tim. 4: 6-8). The family will miss him as a loving father. The congregation at Waterloo will remember him as a faithful minister and bishop. In the conference he rests from his labors, but his works do follow him. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, in charge of the following brethren: Merle Shantz, B. B. Shantz, M. Hallman, C. F. Derstine, S. F. Coffman, M. H. Roth, and J. B. Martin.

Erb Street (David Eby) Mennonite Church

Early services which began around 1837 were held in private homes. Land at the corner of Erb Street and Hallman Road, where the present-day cemetery is located, was donated by David Eby Sr. on July 14, 1851; a red brick church known as David Eby's Church was built in the same year. The first minister in the new church was Jacob M. Oberholtzer who served from 1852 to 1874. He was followed by Elias Schneider (1874-1889), Jonas Snider (1892-1900), Newton Weber (1921-1923), and Noah Hunsberger (1923-1929).

Due to a difference of opinion in the David Eby congregation, Sunday School classes were held at first in a private home, that of Levi Groff, beginning in 1887. The dissension which resulted culminated in a division in the church in 1889; the minister, Elias Schneider, and the deacon, Menno S. Shantz, left the church and joined with the Old Order Mennonites of Woolwich Township. The following year, 1890, saw the commencement of "Edification Meetings", which were held in the homes of members of the David Eby congregation. These meetings later became the Young People's Bible Meetings.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, it was recognized that the church building was either in need of repair or in need of complete replacement. Consideration was given to building a new church on the same site or on a site on King Street North. A decision was made to accept from Samuel S. Snider the donation of a parcel of land which was also on Erb Street, but nearer town. Excavation of the foundation for the new church began in the Spring of 1902. A dedication service was held on August 17, 1902. A parsonage was built in 1929 on land donated by Herbert Snider, the son of Samuel Snider. The church building was renovated and enlarged in 1949-1950; a dedication service was held on April 9, 1950. Further renovations were made in 1974.

BISHOP JONAS SNIDER

Bishop Jonas Snider, 85, R.R. 1, Waterloo, died at his home Sept. 6th. after a lengthy illness.

Born on Oct. 2, 1858, he was a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Elias Snid- er. His entire lifetime was spent on the farm of his birth. In 1892 he was ordained a preacher of the Mennonite faith at the David Eby Mennonite Church, now the Erb St. Mennonite Church, Waterloo. Three years later he was named bishop in which capacity he has since served.

Bishop Snider was a brother of E. W. B. Snider, former president of the Waterloo Manufacturing Co., and who launched the scheme to bring Hydro electric power to this district from Niagara Falls. His grandfather was Jacob C. Snider, district pioneer. who came from Pennsylvania and who took over the saw mill and flour mill from Abraham Erb. the first settler in what is now the town of Waterloo.

Youngest son in a family of 12 children, Bishop Snider married Lucy Ann Snyder. She predeceased him in 1886 and subsequently he married Susannah Horst. She succumbed in 1933. Surviving are eight sons, two daughters, 30 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

The sons are: Edgar, Clayton and Delton of Waterloo; Addison and Walter, Bridgeport, Omar, New Dundee, Benjamin, Woodstock; and Gilbert at home; daughters, Clara and Hannah, at home. One brother, Amos Snider, also survives. Three daughter, and one son predeceased him.

A private service was held Saturday at his late residence near Waterloo at 2 p.m., followed by a public service at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, at 2:46. Rev. J. B. Martin, pastor of Erb St. Mennonite Church, Waterloo, was in charge of the service. Interment was made in First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener.

Shantz. --- Josiah, son of Bro. and Sister Menno S. Shantz, was born Jan. 26, 1861; died at his home in German Mills, Ont., Jan. 5, 1940; aged 78 y. 11 m. 20 d. He was ill for only a week. Death was caused by heart trouble. He was married to Sofiana Rudy Nov. 25, 1884. He was a member of the Strasburg Mennonite Church. Surviving are his wife, 1 daughter (Mrs. David Bearinger, German Mills),1 son (Alvin, of Waterloo), 4 sisters (Mrs. Christian Martin, Mrs. Manasseh Martin, and Mrs. Paul Martin of Waterloo; Mrs. Menno Steckle and Mrs. John Steckle of Zurich), and 6 grandchildren. Two brothers and 1 sister predeceased him. Funeral services were held Jan. 8, private at the home and public services at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Interment in the First Mennonite Cemetery. Funeral services were in charge of Bro. Simon Martin and Jesse Martin.

Mrs. Lydiann Martin, 93, of St. Jacobs, died, Thursday, June 4, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Milton Bauman, RR 3, Waterloo, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Waterloo township, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Menno Shantz. Mrs. Martin was the last surviving member of her family.

Her husband, the late Paul M. Martin, died in 1937.

Surviving are four sons, Elam of Kitchener, Absalom of Waterloo and Alvin and Paul of RR 3, Waterloo; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Martin, RR 1, Elmira, and Mrs Milton (Sussanna) Bauman, RR 3, Waterloo; 26 grand-children and 50 great-grandchildren. Two sons and one daughter predeceased her.

The body rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Saturday at 4 p.m. when removal was made to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Milton Bauman, for the service Sunday at 1:30 p.m. A public service followed at Martin's Mennonite meeting house. Burial was the adjoining cemetery.

Shantz.-Elias Shantz was born Sept. 11, 1867; died Aug. 21, 1937; aged 69 y. 11 m. 9 d. In October, 1891, he was united in marriage to Catharine Sitler, who predeceased him Apr. 22, 1898. In February, 1900, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Lichty who predeceased him 3 years ago. For a few years he suffered from a weak heart which caused his death. He bore his suffering patiently and his sudden departure came as a great shock to his family. He leaves 2 sons, 7 daughters, 47 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 5 sisters, and a large relationship and many friends. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for many years and was always ready to give a helping hand where someone was in need. The funeral was conducted by Brethren B. B. Shantz and H. W. Stevanus.

Snider.-Elias, son of Isaac and Nancy Snider, was born at German Mills, Ont., Sept. 26, 1882; died at his home near West Montrose, Ont., June 16, 1930; aged 47 y. 8 m. 21 d. In 1904 he was married to Bella Pfohl, who predeceased him in 1908. In 1911 he was married to Almina Randall, who predeceased him in 1915. In 1916 he was married to Sarah Bechtel, who, with the following children: Edna, Rheta, Elva, Olive, Alice, Naomi and Bretton, and six brothers (Allen, Leander, Nathaniel, Isaac, Elam, Alvin), and two sisters (Villina and Melissa) are left to mourn the departure of a kind husband and loving brother. Brother Snider united with the Mennonite Church at Waterloo, Ont., in 1908, in which communion he spent his Christian life. Before he passed away he often expressed his desire to go home to be with his Savior. The funeral services were held on Thursday, June 19, from his late home and the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. The brethren in charge of the services were S. G. Shetler and Oscar Burkholder. MRS. ALFRED SNYDER


Mrs. Clara W. Snyder. 76, St. Jacobs, widow of the late Alfred Snyder, died at her home early Sunday morning of last week after a lengthy illness.

The eldest daughter of the late E. W. B. Snyder. she was born at Parkway (German Mills), in 1865. Mrs. Snyder was a member of St. Jacobs Calvary Evangelical Church and took an active part in its various organizations.

Surviving are three sons, Earl of East Geduld, South Africa, Clive of Kitchener, Kenneth of Toronto; two daughters, Mrs. D. B. Harkness of Burlington and Mrs. Geo. Withers of Johannesburg, South Africa.

The thoughts of our young people have this Spring, surely turned to housekeeping. A very pretty Wedding Ceremony was performed in St. Jacobs this afternoon, when Mr. Cranson Snyder, son of Mrs. E. W. B. Snyder, M.P.P. was married to Carrie, eldest daughter of Mr. C. A. Heinrich. The friends of the young couple assembled at the residence of the Bride's parents and at 4 o'clock the words that pronounced them man and wife were spoken by Rev. A. R. Shultz, of Elmira. Miss Annie Heinrich, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid, while Mr. Wm. Snyder, brother of the groom, officiated as groomsman. This evening Mr. and Mrs. Snyder leave for Buffalo and Rochester, where they will spend a short time. Mr. Snyder is a book-keeper in the office of the Waterloo Mfg. Co. and he and his wife bride, on their return, will reside in Waterloo

F. W. Snider

The latter is a young man of ability and considerable business experience who has succeeded in building it up from its precarious existence to one of the leading and most successful industries of Wilmot. The mill today have a capacity of 150 barrels of flour per day, having four double sets of rolls and the building is four stories high and contains amply space Mr. Snider's special brands are "Atlas" and "Belle" for which he finds a ready market for all The can produce in addition to supplying a large local trade he ships many carloads annually to Montreal and other leading markets. Water is the motive power and of which there is sufficient for the year round. Since August last Mr. Snider has purchased as high as forty thousand bushels of wheat from the farmers throughout this section, and in his chopping department since the same month he has produced 13,500 bags of feed. The latter department is supplied with the latest improved machinery and has the capacity to supply the needs of a wide section of country. The mills are in charge of Mr. Byron Swartz, a practical miller. He is the son of the late John Swartz who was accidentally killed here a year or two ago.

Mr. Snider was born at German Mills in April, 1870, and it can be truthfully said that he grew up in the milling business, his father having been for many years extensively engaged in this industry and who is to-day one of the most extensive mill owners in the Province. F. W. has had control here about 4 years. He was married to a Miss Steller and at present is the father of two children. It gives the CHRONICLE Scribe pleasure to note the success of young men who start out on a business career and have taken due advantage of a thorough system of business training during the days of their youth. In this respect the subject of my sketch is one among the few.

William Weber Snider12 the son of E. W. B. Snider and Nancy Weber was born in St. Jacobs on Feb. 25, 1872. After attending the St. Jacobs public school he spent a year at Naperville College, Illinois. In his youth he worked in his father's mill at St. Jacobs and later bought it from him. He continued to operate it until 1919 when he sold it to Walter Snider of Conestoga. After his retirement from milling Mr. Snider showed sound judgment in financial matters. He became president of the Canada Felling Company in St. Jacobs, and of the Anthes Foundry Company in Toronto. He was a charter member of the Waterloo Historical Society. On the death of his sister Lola he suggested that her bequest to the village take the form of a library. Mr. Snider was the first chairman of the Library Board and continued in that position for almost 30 years. During his life-time residence in St. Jacobs he showed great interest in village affairs and generously supported the Evangelical church. Mr. Snider married Alice Snyder of St. Jacobs in 1898. Although their formal education was limited they travelled and read widely and sent their five daughters to college. Mr. Snider's creative imagination found expression in his home and in his garden, four and a half acres which at the time of his marriage he bought from his father and made beautiful with trees and flowers.

ELIAS W. SNIDER

Funeral services for Elias W. Snider. 74, of St. Jacobs, who died Tuesday, May 30, on a liner entering New York harbor, was held last Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira.

Burial was in St. Jacobs Evangelical Cemetery, Rev. A. E. Pletch officiated. Mr. Snider, a well-known St. Jacobs resident, was returning from a trip to Europe when his death occurred. Born in St. Jacobs. he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. W. B. Snider.

Surviving are two sisters, Amy. St. Jacobs: Ada, Toronto; and three brothers, Cranson and Edwin, both of Waterloo. and William, St. Jacobs.

The History of St. Jacobs Branch Library

The St. Jacobs Public Library sits on a small lot behind St. James Lutheran church and the Old Factory, in a small, red brick building. Inside the door a staircase leads the way up into the interior of the library which is a gracious, friendly room, large and bright, including two wings and a central alcove.
The wing to the north of the door, with windows on two sides and book-filled shelves, is the children's section. It contains a long, low table with a bench on each side. An identical wing to the south is the adult section, with the traditional tables and chairs. Beautiful old wooden shelves covered with books line the walls. Tying these two wings together is the alcove. It is separated from the main room by a specially constructed librarian's desk. This alcove gave the librarian an ideal place in which to work and serve. The architect planned this alcove upon special recommendation from Miss Winifred Snider of St. Jacobs, who in 1934 was in charge of Mount Allison University Library, Sackville, New Brunswick. The side walls are lined with shelves and cupboards and light streams in through two windows in the end wall. It is from this large wooden desk that the librarian commands her post.
The library owes its existence to St. Jacobs resident Lola Snider, daughter of E.W.B. Snider and Nancy Weber Snider. She had left a sum of money in her will for her sisters, Ada and Amy Snider (also her executors), to donate toward a charitable purpose in the community. Since Lola had loved books, her sisters decided that a library would be a wonderful way to remember her.
Ada and Amy invited three village trustees - Solomon Eby, Henry Ritter and Lincoln Hollinger - as well as other interested St. Jacobs citizens, to their home on August 7, 1933, to discuss the matter.
The trustees were so intrigued with the idea of St. Jacobs having its own library that they decided to hold an open meeting at the Public School Hall, on August 31, 1933.
Lola's brother, W.W. Snider, told the meeting attendants:
"The executors of the Lola Snider estate will secure a site, erect a library building, equip and furnish the same, without any cost to the ratepayers, and will set aside a sum, as an endowment, the income of which will take care of about half of its maintenance, provided the village will make itself responsible for the other half."
In the St. Jacobs Women's Institute Tweedsmuir History Books (October 15, 1959), Rene Buchanan explains that the executors of the will felt the citizens of St. Jacobs would show more interest in the library if asked to assume half the cost of the upkeep.
As the meeting drew to a close, a unanimous vote decided that the village should accept the offer of a library.
The citizens of St. Jacobs were given a chance to have their say on September 29, 1933, at Winkler's Hall. The final vote resulted in 152 for the library and 2 against.
Once the village had permission for the project, they began considering locations. Two properties were considered. One was the corner lot on the main highway, where Good's Blacksmith Shop had been for forty years. The second one was one block off the main highway, on Queen Street. It was part of the old school property, which had been purchased by the village in 1929 with the intention of creating a park.
The village trustees felt that the quiet, peaceful Queen Street location, with its large shade trees, would be an ideal spot for a library. They decided to offer it to the library committee

Snider, Urias, son of John. B. and Magdalena (Snyder) Snider; born near Kitchener Ont., Nov. 22, 1875; died, after a brief illness, Dec. 25, 1958, on the farm where he was born, only 24 days after the passing away of his wife, the former Nancy Shantz; aged 83 y. 1 m. 3 d. They were married Nov. 21, 1900, and shared the joys and sorrows of life for 58 years. Eight children were born to this union, of whom 3 sons passed away in infancy. Surviving are 2 sons (Selwyn and Arlin), 3 daughters (Glennys- Mrs. Edward G. Snyder, Twilah, and Esther), one brother (Ephraim, Kitchener), and one granddaughter. He accepted Christ during the Coffman revival, and served the Strasburg Church for many years. Memorial services were conducted by Simon B. Martin and Lester Bauman on Dec. 27; interment in church cemetery.

John E. Bonner, son of William and Ellen White Bonner, was born July 2, 1866 at New Diggings, Wisconsin and died July 10, 1948 at his home in Sanborn at the age of 82 years and 8 days. His early boyhood was spent in Wisconsin. When a boy of 17 years, he came with his parents to Sanborn, Iowa, where he lived on a farm for several years.

He was married to Arclista Snider on April 18, 1894. They lived in or near Sanborn until 1904, when they went to South Dakota and lived at Frederick and Valley Spring. They returned to Sanborn in 1910 and lived here for three years, then moved to Belmont, Montana, which was their home for thirty years. They then returned in December 1944 to live in Sanborn.

John attended the Methodist church and Church School and with his wife united with St. Andrews Methodist Church of Sanborn, March 8, 1946.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; three brothers: William L., Robert A., and Charles W.; and two sisters: Jane A., and Elizabeth J.

He leaves to mourn his death: his widow; one brother, Thomas G., of Chokio, Minn.; and three sisters: Miss. Nora M. Dodson, of Waterloo, Iowa, Mrs. Mary Miller and Mrs. Anna Heinsen, both of Sanborn; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home with Rev. H. Milo Hall in charge. A mixed quartet, Miss Gladys Barber, Miss Ardis Riser, A. Ericson and Henry Grooters sang "Rock of Ages" and "Sweet Bye and Bye" without accompaniment. Casketbearors were A. L. Thomas, Guy Melvin, Robert Inman, Louis Smith, John Delan and Kenneth Tifft. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery.

Notes:

Edna Snider, daughter of Tillman and Magdeline Snider, was born in Ontario, Canada on August 20, 1880. She came to the United States with her parents at the age of 10 years, in 1890, and settled in the Sanborn, Iowa, vicinity. Here she attended school and grew to young womanhood.

She was united in marriage to Clare Hakeman of Sanborn, Iowa on June 10, 1903. Their entire married life was lived in Sanborn where her husband, Clare, was manager of the Sanborn Cooperative Grain Company.

Clare and Edna entered the Prairie View Retirement Home in September of 1967 where they lived until his death January 8, 1969. She continuted to make her home there and passed away there suddenly on December 28, 1975 at the age of 95 years, four months and eight days.

She is survived by three sons: Cornyle and George of Sanborn, Iowa, and James of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters: Mrs. Lawrence (Margaret) Hickey of Sanborn, and Dorothy Foote of Des Moines, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; two sisters: Mabel Higgins of Dequim Washington and Elthen Turner of Seal Beach, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clare on January 8, 1969; one son in infancy; two brothers and two sisters.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sanborn.

Honsberger.-Mary Anne Snyder [should read Lydia Ann], beloved wife of Franklin Honsberger, of Jordan, Ont., passed away at the home of her parents, Bro. And Sister John Snyder of German Mills, Ont. She had been a patient sufferer, but was soon cut off from her useful life and leaves a sorrowing companion and two small children, who have the sympathy of many friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home of Bro. Snyder in Waterloo Co. by Noah Stouffer and Eli Hallman. The corpse was then brought to Jordan to the home from which she had gone last fall and to which she had soon expected to return to be with her beloved family. Funeral services were held on Sunday, when an exceptionally large congregation assembled, it being also the occasion of the funeral services of the above Sister Martin*. On this afternoon within an hour these two bodies were laid away to rest until the day of resurrection. May God give especial comfort to the parents, brothers, sister and beloved companion and children of the esteemed young sister. Services conducted by the ministers J.F. Mrs. Annetta Cressman

Mrs. Annetta Cressman, 76, died suddenly Monday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alvin Gascho, 859 Mill St. Born in Waterloo Township on Aug. 27, 1876, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob B. Snider. Her husband, Isaiah Cressman, predeceased her on June 8, 1943. She was a member of First United Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Surviving are two sons, Vernon S. and Hilliard of Kitchener; three daughters, Mrs. Elum (Clara) Martin and Mrs. Alvin (Reta) Gascho of Kitchener and Mrs. Uria (Marjorie) Baeringer of St. Catharines and four brothers, Action, Ion of Preston, Harvey of Bloomingdale and Lloyd of Williamsburg. Nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive. One brother, Alvin, and one sister, Lydiann, predeceased her. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 1 p.m. Thursday when removal will be made to the First Mennonite Church. The funeral will be held there at 3 p.m. Burial will be in the Strasburg Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. John Hess will be in charge of the service

Mrs. Elva Wiegand Passed Away at Daughter's Home

Mrs. Elva Wiegand, who had been ill for the past two months and who came from Fairmont, Minn., less than two weeks ago to be cared for in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Loers and family, died Monday morning, July 2.

Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon, Thursday, at one-thirty o'clock at the Harpole Funeral Home. Mrs. Wiegand was a member of the Church of Christian Science in Fairmont and services will be in charge of Mrs. Lyshoi from the church in that city. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Estherville.

Elva Alberta Snider Wiegand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Snider, was born October 29, 1879, at Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. At the time of her death she was sixty-five years and nine months of age.

She came with her parents to the United States when she was nine years of age. The family settled at May City where they continued to make their home until the death of Mr. and Mrs. Snider. The latter passed away three years ago and the father died in May, 1945. For the last two years of his life Mrs. Wiegnd had cared for him at May City.

Following her marriage to John Wiegand, Mrs. Wiegand lived in the May City community and also at Estherville. Later she lived for some time in Fairmont.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons. The daughters are Mrs. Harry Loers of Spirit Lake, Mrs. Alice Rockne of Estherville, and Mrs. Marjorie Markquart of Fairmont. The sons are Myrle Wiegand of Long Beach, California who arrived here late last Thursday to be with his mother in her last illness, and Sgt. LeRoy Wiegand, who is with the United States armed forces in Belgium.

Another son, Ronald, died twenty-one years ago at the age of nineteen. [eighteen]

She is also survived by eleven grandchildren.

Besides her interest and work in affairs of the church with which she was affiliated, Mrs. Wiegand was very active in the Red Cross, giving freely of her time and labor whenever an opportunity was afforded her.

A granddaughter, Marilyn Loers, WAVE, S.K.D. 3/c, is stationed in San Diego, California, and a grandson, Howard Loers, E.M. 1/c, is with the armed forces in the South Pacific. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, July 5, 1945)

Funeral Services for Mrs. A. Hunsperger -

Mrs. Abner (Selina) Hunsperger, 73, a pioneer resident of the Didsbury district and first bride to be married in the first church in Didsbury, died Wednesday, January 26 in the local hospital.

Mrs. Hunsperger was born in Kitchener, Ontario, and moved to Didsbury in 1894. She was married in December 1898 to Abner Hunsperger and had lived in this district since.

Surviving are her husband, four daughters, Mrs. Irene Rennie and Mrs Ruby Kimmel of Didsbury, Mrs. Lottie McCoy of Carstairs, and Mrs. Holly Peterson of Calgary; one sister, Mrs. Alwin Hunsperger of Didsbury; one brother, Bert Shantz of Calgary; 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 28 in the United Missionary church and burial was in the Didsbury cemetery. Pallbearers were her six nephews, Harold Shantz, Glen Shantz, Lynn Hunsperger, Nyle Hunsperger, Gordon Sherrick and Ward Sherrick.

Didsbury Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

YATTON.\emdash Mr. Josiah Martin of Yatton passed away on Friday, April 2Ist from an attack of pneumonia. Mr. Martin had been in ill health for some time suffering from asthma and a weak heart. He was 56 years old and resided In this community for the past thirty-one years. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tilman Martin, from near Waterloo.

He is survived by his widow, two adopted children, Mrs. Edwin Bowman, who resided with him and Mr. Melvin Bowman of the Macton district, five sisters, Mrs. Simeon Martin near Elmira, Mrs. Ezra Bauman near Hawkesville, Mrs. Israel Brubacher, third of Peel, Mrs. Isaac Bauman, fourth of Peel, Mrs. Urias Bauman, near Elmira. and four brothers, Edwin Martin, third of Peel, Allan Martin, Floradale, Ananias Martin, Waterloo and Tilman Martin, sixth of Peel.

The funeral was held Monday morning to the townline Mennonite Church, near Macton, and was largely attended. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

He was a farmer all his life. MRS. ELIAS WIDEMAN

There passed away, following an attack of pneumonia, at her home at Balsam Grove, on Sunday, March 19, Lydian Martin, wife of Elias Wideman, aged 49 years, 11 months and 2 days. The late Mrs. Wideman was born April 17, 1889, in Waterloo Co., and in 1913 she married Elias Wideman.

They lived for four years at the homestead at New Jerusalem, following which they moved to Balsam Grove, where they have since resided.

Surviving are her husband, eleven children, Mary, Lydia, Erma, Wilma and Elvina, at home; Gordon, near Elmira; Tilman, on the 4^th of Peel; Menno, near Elmira; Clayton, Abner and Ephraim, at home; five sisters, Mrs. Simon Martin, near Elmira; Mrs. Ezra Bauman , near Hawkesville; Mrs. Israel Brubacher, third of Peel; Mrs. Isaac Bauman, fourth of Peel; Mrs. Urias Martin. near Elmira; and five brothers, Joseph Martin, third of Peel; Edwin Martin, third of Peel; Allan Martin. Floradale; Ananaias Martin, Waterloo, and Tilman Martin, sixth of Peel.

The funeral was held on Tuesday, March 21, with services at the Mennonite Church. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. J. Bauman and Rev. Abraham Bearinger were the officiating clergymen.

Bearinger. - Elvina, daughter of the late Josiah and Sophiana Shantz, was born Oct. 5, 1890; passed away Aug. 1, 1945; aged 54 y. 9 m. 26 d. On Feb. 11, 1913, she was united in marriage to David M. Bearinger. Surviving are her husband, 2 sons (Urias, Kitchener, Ont.; and Vernon, at home), 3 daughters (Vera - Mrs. Delton Martin, Elmira, Ont.; Almeda - Mrs. Leonard Snider, of Kitchener; and Doris, at home), and one brother (Alvin, Waterloo, Ont.). Her death came as a shock to the family and friends, as she had been in fairly good health. On the evening of Aug. 1 she suffered a stroke and passed away several hours later. She was a faithful member of the Weber Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held Aug. 4 at the East End Mennonite Church, Kitchener, in charge of Simon B. Martin and Benjamin Shantz. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Eden Martin, 71, of RR 2, Baden, died from a heart attack Monday while driving his car a short distance from his home. Mr. Martin was born July 5, 1894, in Waterloo Township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Manassah Martin. He had farmed for many years in the Waterloo area and had lived in the Baden area for the past year. He was a member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Valina Shantz, whom he married March 3, 1920, in Waterloo Township; two sons, Mervin, St. Agatha, and Clare, Waterloo; two daughters, Mrs. Ward (Erma) Shantz and Mrs. George (Vera) Weber, both of Waterloo; two brothers, David, Elmira, and Ephriam, Ayr; four sisters, Mrs. Moses (Re- becca) Martin and Mrs. Clayton (Lucinda) Martin, both of Elmira, Mrs Jeremiah (Valina) Bauman, Drayton, and Mrs. Harvey (Saloma) Bauman, Waterloo, and 13 grandchildren.
