Dr. Charlton came here in 1902 and served on the Hespeler School Board in 1904-1905 and 1906 and some time later went to Galt where he took quite a prominent part in the Public Life of the community and was on one occasion Candidate of his Political Party for a seat in Parliament. His son, David, now Judge of the County of Waterloo, was born here.

Dr. Charlton's first name was Sylvester and while he taught school in Puslinch before going into Medicine some of the farmers in the section used to call him "Yes". Among these was an old Irishman, who used commonly the words "Thank God" in his conversation. Once Dr. Charlton got settled here some of these old friends paid him a visit. This old Irish chap came in one day and after the customary greetings the old Gentleman asked "Well, Ves., and how is things goin?" The Dr. replied that he was getting along very well and that just at the moment he was very busy; adding that there were an awful lot of people sick just now. The old man just said "Thank God." It amused the Doctor who told me the story at the time.

    CHARLTON, SYLVESTER ERNEST
was born on a farm in Lobo Township, Middlesex County, a son of David Charlton. He attended the collegiate institutes of Strathroy and Galt, and obtained a first class certificate. He taught school for over five years at Killean and Clyde before entering the medical faculty of the University of Toronto. He graduated with honors in 1900 and in September of that year began to practice in Hespeler.

He practised there for six years, then in September 1906 he sold his practice to D. F. Mckinley of Toronto Junction, and moved to Galt.

In 1926 because of illness he disposed of his home and office on Wellington Street to Dr. J. L. King. He had developed pernicious anaemia, but after taking the liver treatment discovered that year by Dr. G. R. Minot of Boston, he recovered. He was described as being the first in Canada to undergo this treatment, and was able to maintain good health until the time of his death, on April 17, 1933.

In Galt he was elected to the school board, then became a member of Council, and in 1921 and 1922 became mayor by acclamation. He was a supporter of the Liberal party, and contested two provincial elections as their candidate. He was involved in the Galt Horse Shows, and was a director of the South Waterloo Agricultural Society for some years.

He died in his 71 st. year, and was survived by his widow and two sons

    Notes:

CHARLTON, ROBERT MERRITT was a brother of Dr. S. E. Charlton, with whom he practised for about a year, according to Dr. E. Hagmeier. He was a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, class of 1906, and presumably came to Galt at that time as he is listed there in the Ontario Medical Register for 1907.

From items in the Dumfries Reformer it appears that he tried two localities - Churchbridge, Sask., and Strattan, Northern Ontario, before deciding on Hamilton for the conduct of his practice.

A history of medicine in Hamilton by A. G. McGhie says. "He conducted a very busy family practice from a York street office for many years. He was a tall, amiable individual, much respected by his patients and the profession."
