    Hallman, Eli S. (1866-1955)

"Eli S. Hallman: minister and bishop of the Sharon Mennonite Church at Guernsey, Saskatchewan. Field Secretary for Goshen College, and bishop in congregations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, was born 26 February 1866 in Waterloo, Ontario, and died at Akron, Pennsylvania, on 25 August 1955. He married Melinda Clemens (18 May 1873-12 February 1956) on 9 April 1893. They were the parents of five children.

Hallman joined the Methodist church in Ontario at the age of 21, but joined the Mennonite Church following a revival conducted by the Mennonite evangelist, J. S. Coffman. He was ordained as a minister at the First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, Ontario on 17 June 1897. During the first seven years of his ministry, he spent the greater part of his time conducting evangelistic services in Ontario and parts of the United States. Then, in 1905, he agreed to accompany a group of Mennonites who were moving West to the Quill Lake Mennonite Reserve in Saskatchewan. He served as the minister of the new Mennonite congregation at Guernsey, Saskatchewan, and in 1907 he was ordained in Ontario as a bishop to have oversight of the newly organized Alberta-Saskatchewan Mennonite Conference .

In western Canada, and later in the southern United States, Hallman demonstrated love and acceptance of ministers of other denominations, especially the General Conference ministers of nearby communities. He was also a strong supporter and became a member of the Canadian Mennonite Board of Colonization which facilitated the immigration of more than twenty-thousand Mennonites from the Soviet Union to Canada in the 1920s. His openness to other Mennonite groups brought him many invitations to take part in special services, but he never apologized for the practices of his own congregation and conference. He tried to be firm and exercise redemptive love, and was biblical in his teaching. He greatly enjoyed teaching in the district winter Bible schools which he strongly supported.

Hallman accepted an appointment to serve as Field Secretary of Goshen College in 1912, but in 1916 the family moved to Grand Bay, Alabama, for health reasons, and a little later to Allemands, Louisiana, where he assisted in the formation of a new congregation. The family returned to Guernsey, Saskatchewan, in 1919, where he again served the Sharon Mennonite Church until 1928 when the Hallman family, again for health reasons, moved to Falfurrias and later in 1932 to Tuleta, Texas. There he served congregations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas as bishop until his retirement in 1951. Throughout his life he demonstrated a great interest in evangelism and in missions. Two of his five children became missionaries in Argentina. After his retirement he lived in Akron, Pennsylvania, where he died on 25 August 1955 at the age of 89."

Hallman, -- Eli S. , son of the late Abraham and Mary (Schmitt) Hallman, was born Feb. 25, 1866, in Waterloo Co., Ont. ; entered into rest Aug. 25, 1955, at his home in Akron, Pa. , after an illness of eight weeks; aged 89 y. 6 m. On April9, 1893, he was married to Melinda Clemens, who shared with him life's joys and sorrows for 62 years. He accepted Christ as his Saviour in his youth and united with the Mennonite Church. Throughout his life he served the Lord faithfully and his consecrated service to the Church brought the blessings of a rich and fruitful ministry. On June 17, 1898, at the age of 31, he was ordained to the Christian ministry at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. His early years in the ministry (from 1897 to 1907) were spent in evangelistic and missionary activities as well as in Bible conference work in various sections of the Church. He retained this deep interest in missionary endeavors throughout his entire life. In 1905 he helped to establish a Mennonite settlement in the western part of Canada near Guernsey, Sask. In May of that year a congregation was organized which became known as the Sharon Mennonite Church. He preached the first sermon for the homesteaders in Deacon Aaron Biehn's tent on May 7, 1905, using Heb.11: 8-10 as his text. Besides taking care of his regular Sunday preaching appointments he spent much of that first year at Saskatchewan in locating homesteads and lands for settlers as well as assisting the new settlers in setting up their homesteads. Because of his busy life of service in behalf of others during these days, his neighbors offered by turns to plow the ten acres on his homestead which were required for homestead duties. In November of 1907, he was ordained as bishop by the Ontario Conference to have the oversight of the newly organized Alberta-Saskatchewan Conference. Later he served as field secretary for Goshen College between the years of 1912 and 1916. Because of health reasons he and his family moved to Grand Bay, Ala. , in 1916 and later to Allemands, La., where he assisted in the formation of a new Mennonite congregation. In 1920, it became possible for him and his family to return tothe Guernsey section of Saskatchewan and the Sharon congregation where he served the Alberta-Saskatchewan Conference until 1928. In that year he took up residence in Falfurrias and later Tuleta, Texas, where he remained until his retirement in 1951. For these twenty-three years he served as bishop in congregations in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Since his retirement he lived in Akron, Pa. , and was a member of the Monterey Mennonite Church. He served on the Mennonite Publication Board and the Mennonite Board of Education. During the early 1920's he was a member of the Colonization Board of Canada. Because of his wide experience and sound Christian judgment he was bale to give guidance and counsel which have been greatly appreciated by younger men in the ministry. He maintained a Church-wide interest and up to the year before his death he was present in district conference sessions. Surviving are his wife, Melinda Clemens Hallman, and these children (George B., White Fox, Sask.; William E., Argentina, S. A. ; Abram P., Akron, Pa; and Anna-Mrs. B. Frank Byler, Argentina, S. A. The eldest son (Clemens) preceded him in death in 1927. Also surviving are 2 sisters (Sarah of Josiah Cassel, Preston, Ont.; and Lucinda-Mrs. Ephraim Snider, Kitchener, Ont.), one brother (J. Riley Hallman, Toronto, Ont.) , 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 27 at the Monterey Mennonite Church, Lancaster Co., Pa., with Amos S. Horst and Maurice W. Landis officiating. A further service was held Aug. 29 in the Cressman Mennonite Church Breslau, Ont., conducted by Oscar Burkholder, Lewis Fretz, and others. Interment was made in the Cressman Church Cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Cassel 3rd Oldest Married Couple

Lifelong Residents of New Dundee District 52 Years Married (By Chronicle Correspondent) New Dundee

the third oldest married couple in this district, Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Cassel observed their 52nd wedding anniversary quietly at their home on Front St. on Thursday, Jan. 5th, Mr. and Mrs. Cassel have been life-long residents of this community although they have only resided in the village for the past 22 years after retiring from farming on the land now owned by Cameron Bock, three and one-half miles west of here. Previous to that they farmed on the old Cassel homestead, one mile west of the village which is now owned by Ervin Sararas.

Among their recollections of early farm life, Mr. Cassel recalls how he and numbers of other farmers in the district teamed wood to Galt a distance of twelve miles during the winter months, when wood was practically the only fuel in use. Mrs. Cassel also remembers how she made quantities of farmer's cheese for which there was always a ready market in the surrounding towns.

Mr. and Mrs. Cassel have enjoyed travelling, during their 52 years of married life. Their wedding trip was spent in Pennsylvania and in later years they visited Michigan at various times and also travelled to the Canadian West in 1919.

Mr. Cassel vividly recalls attending the Chicago World's fair in 1893 as well as a trip to Alberta in 1900 when the West was still sparsely settled. He remembers that a single shed was the only building on the site where the town of Didsbury is now located. Even during the past year Mr. and Mrs. Cassel made a trip to Montreal, Que., where they visited the latter's brother, Mr. Abram S. Hallman, who was the best man at their wedding in 1887.

Mrs. Cassel who celebrated her 71st birthday on Christmas Day was formerly Sarah Ann Hallman, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abram S. Hallman, Sr., and Mr. Cassel who is 82 years of age was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jesse B. Cassel. They were united in marriage by Rev. Jacob Bowman, one-time pastor of the United Brethren Church at New Dundee. Mrs. Cassel has been closely associated in the work of this church for many years and only recently resigned as teacher in the Sunday School after having completed 21 consecutive years of teaching. Mr. and Mrs. Cassel have four children living, 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Their many friends wish them continued health and happiness.

HALLMAN. - On the 26th of Jan., 1891, in Blenheim Twp., Oxford Co., Ont., Amos Hallman, aged 21 years, 2 days. On the 25th, he attended services in the Blenheim church and on the way home, Amos with 4 of his comrades stood in the rear end of the sled. The team, having gone over a piece of bare ground, and being suddenly relieved on the heavy load on striking a piece of good road, caused the sled to lurch forward, and several of the boys fell out. Amos fell on his head, causing concussion of the brain. He was conscious only a few moments and in a short time a corpse. "What is man that thou art mindful of him." What a lesson of warning to his neighbors, comrades, brothers, and sisters. May all take it to heart and prepare to meet their God in peace. Bro. And Sister Hallman have the warm sympathies of the friends and neighbors. This was the largest funeral ever held in the Blenheim church. Services by Joseph Nahrgang and J. S. Coffman, from Matt. 20: 19, and 1 Peter 1: 24

    Notes:

Moses S. Hallman, "was born March 25th, 1859. He is married to Fannie Foreman and resides at Red Bay, Bruce County, Ontario, where he is engaged in the fish business. On December 10th, 1894, he took his small boat and sailed over to White Fish Isle, several miles to the east of Bruce Peninsula where he had stored a number of barrels of fish. After having taken 18 barrels on his small boat he set sail for the main land. Not having proceeded far on his return, he was suddenly overtaken by a violent storm, tearing away his masts and sails and driving him northward towards the upper end of the peninsula. To keep his small leaky craft afloat he was obliged to toss the whole of his cargo overboard and work his way through the foaming waves the best he could with two small oars. It cost him all his time to guide the boat with one hand and with a small tin can bail out the water with the other. He was thus drifted along by the cold and severe snow storm now blowing at a terrific rate. When darkness set in he was passing Cabot Head and rapidly drifting out on Lake Huron where he spent the whole night and the greater part of the following day, working at his oars and bailing out the water. A change in the wind at six in the morning caused his boat to return towards Bruce Peninsula where he arrived at Stokes Bay late in the afternoon. His lower limbs were so badly frozen during the thirty hours he experienced on that never-to-be-forgotten trip that when he arrived at land he was not able to walk but crawled on hand and foot over one-half mile to the nearest residence which, to his great disappointment, he found vacated. From here he crawled to another log cabin about forty rods distant where he arrived at sunset. The inmates, who were kind people, did all in their power to alleviate the sufferings of their almost dying guest who was a perfect stranger to them. After partaking of some food he fell asleep and slept several hours. When awakening he suffered extreme pain in his limbs which continued for several days when he gradually commenced to recover. It caused tears of joy to his wife, mother, brother, and relatives when the news came that the "supposed lost one" was saved."

Hallman, Moses S., son of Joseph and Salome (Schmitt) Hallman, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., March 25, 1859; died in Rainham, Ont., Jan. 14, 1942; aged 82 y. 9 m. 20 d. His death was caused by a stroke, from which he suffered for about a week. He was married to Fanny Foreman, who predeceased him in 1920. To this union were born 5 daughters and 1 son; Salome Winger of Rainham, Mary Shantz of Petersburg, Tena Shantz of Preston, Estella Hinde of Kansas, Lucille Scott of Toronto, and Ivan of Kitchener. This unbroken circle of children will miss very keenly the passing of their father. There also survive 19 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The first 30 years of his life were spent in Waterloo Co., while his last 8 years were spent mainly with his daughter Salome, of Rainham. At the age of 32 he confessed his Lord as Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church where he has been a faithful member till death. His keen interest in the work of the Church was evident by his earnest labors in organizing Sunday schools during his earlier years. May the comfort of the Holy Spirit abide with each of the family who remain. The funeral service was conducted at the Winger home by Bro. A. L. Fretz, after which the body was conveyed to Kitchener for burial in the Mennonite Cemetery adjoining First Mennonite Church.

Snider. -- Maylinda, daughter of George and Veronica Hallman, was born in Waterloo Co. , Ont. , May 1, 1896; died July2, 1936, at the General Hospital at Galt, Ont. , after an illness of five weeks. She was in her 41st year. At the age of 14 she confessed Christ as her personal Savior and united with the Mennonite Church, being a member of the Blenheim congregation. She lived a consistent Christian life in all these years, having a desire to magnify the name of her Lord. her testimony was: "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. " She was resigned to the will of the Lord in the last trying hours of her life, and expressed a desire to depart and to be with the Lord. On Dec. 25, 1918, she was united in marriage to Omar Snider of Waterloo, Ont. , which union was blest with 5 sons and 3 daughters. She was a devoted wife and mother, having always a deep concern for her family. She is sadly missed in the home, community, and congregation. She leaves her husband, 3 sons, and 3 daughters; also her mother, 3 brothers, 3 sisters, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held July 4 from their home in Wilmot Township and to the Blenheim Mennonite Church for services in charge of M. H. Shantz assisted by C. C. Cressman. Text, Phil. 1: 21. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

    "Mother was tired and weary,
    Weary with toil and with pain;
Put by her glasses and rocker,
She will not need them again.
    Into heaven's mansions she's entered,
    Never to sigh or to weep;
After short years with life's struggles
    Mother has fallen asleep."

Hallman - Clemens S. oldest son of Eli and Melinda Clemens Hallman, was born at Kitchener, Ont., June 11, 1895; died at St. Paul,s Hospital, Saskatoon, of inflammatory rheumatism and heart failure, after an illness of over five weeks; aged 32 y. 2 m. 12 d. On June 19, 1919, he was married to Cleo Shearer of Wakarusa, Ind. To this union were born 4 children: one whom died in infancy. The family who mourn this loss are his beloved wife, two daughters, one baby son, his parents, three brothers (George, William, Abram). And one sister (Anna), besides his relatives and a host of friends. During the first evangelistic meetings held in this part of the country by Bro. A. D. Wenger in the pioneer days of this district, he became the first convert to Christ, at the age of 11, and was later baptized and received into the Mennonite Church of which he was a member till death. In the year 1915 he graduated with the academy class at Goshen College. He later continued his studies at Saskatchewan University. For a few years he taught public school and in college; but the most of his secular profession was devoted to the education work for the Department of Agriculture in the Province. In the days of his sickness he sincerely regretted that he did not give more of his devotion to the cause of Christ, and trusting anew in the mercy of God realized Hid pardon, and rejoiced in hope of the glory of God. In the last days of suffering, as the end drew nearer heaven became dearer, and the things of time were fading away. Our loss is his eternal gain. Funeral services were held at the Sharon Mennonite Church, conducted by I. S. Rosenberger, M. H. Schmitt (text. Psa. 90: 12), and Edwin Bartel (text, Lam. 1: 12).

Island man looks back on 100 years lived to the fullest

BY JACQUELYN LEWIS, The Island Packet (Beaufort, South Carolina)

    Published Monday, December 12, 2005

Abe Hallman recently pulled off a feat that has earned him countless congratulations, a mountain of greeting cards and a mention on the Today Show. He turned 100 years old on Thursday. "It's like a dream," Hallman said, his warm, gentle features lighting up as he recalled watching Willard Scott telling him "happy birthday" on television. "It doesn't seem real."

But Hallman's daughter, Joanne Hallman Dahl, said the accolades aren't just because her father, who moved to Hilton Head Island in September, has become a centenarian. Instead, she said, the cards and congratulations are kudos for a lifetime of love and service to others.
Hallman helped organize Mennonite Mutual Aid in the 1940s, an organization that helps Mennonite church members obtain affordable insurance. For about 20 years, he spent his spare time traveling the country to volunteer with the organization. Hallman also helped start a church organization that aids missionaries in their travels, and he founded a Mennonite church in Lancaster County, Pa.
Dahl said Hallman, now a grandfather of seven and a great-grandfather of six, also approached fatherhood with the same dedication, becoming a "kindred spirit" to his children.

"(My father) is basically kind of a shy person, but he is so well loved by everyone," Dahl said. "He loves serving and helping people."
Hallman's commitment to helping others dates back to his upbringing in the Mennonite church, he said.
Hallman was born in 1905 in the tiny farming town of Berlin, in Ontario, Canada, and his father, Eli Hallman, was a minister and wheat farmer. Hallman's mother, Melynda, ran the household.

"Those were very happy years, as I remember," said Hallman, who grew up with a younger sister and three older brothers.
"We did farm work; we milked cows and worked in the fields, and this was before you had machines for harvesting," Hallman reminisced from a cushy chair in his small, tidy room at Broad Creek Care Center. "I worked hard, but I was a very happy teenager."
Still, Hallman said, most people in Berlin never went to high school, let alone college. And the farming life wasn't enough to satisfy a young man who dreamed of becoming a stockbroker.

Hallman said his oldest brother, Clemens, was his inspiration to strive for excellence, because Clemens graduated from high school and worked for the government in Canada.

Hallman found a Mennonite school in Indiana where he could earn his high school diploma, and after that, he enrolled at Goshen College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business and science.

But upon graduation, Hallman said, the Great Depression dashed his hopes of becoming a stockbroker. "It was 1931," he said. "I would have really liked to sell stocks or futures, but there were no jobs in finance." He ended up working for a "huckster" -- a produce farmer who went door to door selling his wares -- for a year. "I rode beside him and carried the basket with some sweet cream butter, eggs and maybe a chicken," Hallman said. Job prospects weren't much better the next year, he said, and he spent 12 months loading trucks and filling out paperwork for a pork processing plant. "There wasn't a future in that," Hallman said. "But it was a job."

He was about 30 when he fell in love with a college friend, Esther Yoder. Hallman and Yoder kindled a romance after they met again at a Goshen College reunion. "We were friends in college, but after the reunion, I saw her in a different light," Hallman said. The two were married on Christmas in 1936. They went on to have two children, Jim and Joanne.

Shortly before he got married, Hallman took a job as a traveling shoe salesman at the now-defunct Miller, Hess and Company. "Selling was the last thing I ever thought I wanted to do," Hallman said. "But it was a job, so I took it." Hallman managed to parlay that job into a 51-year career, in which he traveled the country selling shoes and worked his way up to company president and chairman of the board of directors.

And, despite his initial doubts, he said he ended up enjoying his career. He got to see the entire United States, and in between working and volunteering with his church, he took his family on vacations to places like New York City. "I've never in my whole life had an 8-hour a day job where I had to sit at a desk," he said. "That's unusual."

Hallman also developed some unusual talents over the years. He picked up woodcarving when he was in his 70s. He learned to sculpt detailed figures such as cowboys and Santas from blocks of basswood after he saw a wood carving display in a Phoenix, Ariz. mall.
"That was on a Wednesday," he said, the meticulous fruits of his more than 20 years of labor dotting the dresser and tables in his room. "I took a (wood carving) class on Friday, and I was hooked. It must have been working with my hands and the details that I liked. Apparently, I had an ability that very few people have."

He also learned to make hook rugs after his second wife, Lois, got involved with the hobby. "At first I said, 'absolutely not,'" Hallman said with a laugh. "But then I was watching her, and I got hooked."

Although Hallman said he has slowed down a bit since approaching 100, he brought both hobbies with him when he moved to Broad Creek Care Center from Goshen, Ind., to be closer to his daughter. He also walks, lifts weights and does crossword puzzles every day. "I've had a good life," he said. "But it hasn't all been a bed of roses."

He said he had to face the death of his first wife, Esther, in 1972 -- he married a second time, to Esther's sister, Lois, in late 1973 -- and the death of his only son, Jim, when Jim was in his 40s. Then, Lois died in 1994. But Hallman said he's been able to get through the tough times by drawing on his faith and his ability to adapt to any situation. "You can always begin again," daughter Dahl said. "And he always has."

    Birth date: Dec. 8, 1905.
Hails from: Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario, Canada.

Greatest life lesson: "I have a philosophy that I call 'go with the flow.' You can try to change something you dislike, so you fight it and try to keep everything going as it was. But when a river is dammed, it has no outlet and it tends to get stagnant."
