Funeral Here Saturday Galt's No. 1 Sportsman

The funeral of the late James "Casey" Fraserr 169 King Street Preston conceeded to have been galt's number one all-round Sportsman, who passed away Wednesday morning in the SWMH in his 87th year, will take place Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Little's Funeral home to Mount View Cemetery. He was born in Galt March 21, 1876 and had spent the greater part of his life in Galt. In sport Circles all over Ontario, at one time having been an outstanding hockey referee, officiating all over the province, including paly-offs series and hae made such an impression for his fairness that visiting clubs wouldn't object to him handling games on Galt ice. He also learned an enviable reputation as a baseball umpire back in the days when Galt Was represented in a district professional league.

The late "Casey" Fraser had been in declining Health to the last couple of years. Back in the winter of 1959 he was laid low with an attack of pneumonia and was hospitalized for several weeks but recovered. Then he was stricken with arthritis in the left shoulder, that caused him great pain. However he showed a fighting Spirit but in the past 6 months head twice been hospitalized with strength gradually ebbing due to the infirmities of old age.

    Born in Galt

Deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Fraser and was born in that big Stone House below Central School, now No. 1 Harris Street located behind the Hancock Terrace. His mother Annie Rae, wasl the daughter of Jimmy Rae, one of the pioneer settlers of North Dumfries, while on his father's side his ancestors lived in the Crieff district. When he was a small youngster his family moved to Grand Ave South, opposite of the Goldie-McCulloch plant where his Father for many years was yardmaster. He attended Dickson School and it was in its play yard that his love for sport was born as he participated in the various games. When a boy of 16 years he entered the employ of Golie and McCulloch Co. and served his apprenticeship as a pattern maker. They remained with that firm for many years and then worked at Sheldon's CMC and McDougalls and eventually moved to Guelph to take a job at the Guelph Stove foundry, at which time is brother-in-law Bill Bruce, was superintendent. After 20 years with that firm he was pensioned and then moved to Preston where for a few years he worked at his trade at a Clair Brothers plant, retiring in 1956.

    Avid Sportsman

While the origin of his nickname "Casey", it's not known it probably came from that well-known Baseball "Song Casey At The Bat" since that game was tops with him. Galt had probably never had an all-around sportsman to compare with the departed popular little gent. He had followed practically every game known, as well as participating in football, hockey, baseball, basketball, rugby, lacrosse, and even in one game of cricket. He was a consistent supporter of Galt ball and hockey teams, even when not living in Galt. He had a great collection of baseball records and possessed many old pictures of Galt clubs with which he had been identified as well as some of the greats of the baseball diamond. He had a company golf teams on many of their out-of-town engagements, even when on a trip to St Louis many years ago when Galt's football squad won the World Championship the World's Fair there, and also was on other tours with that club.

The late James Fraser was always a smart dresser and was distinguished by his bowtie that ever-present cigar in his mouth, and was really a hat stylist, wearing a straw sailor in the summer and a bowler in the winter. In retirement is inseparable companion around the streets of Preston was a cute little Boston Terrier dog and when the first one was killed by an auto, he soon had a replacement

One incident in his later life that he was exceptionally pleased about was the receipt of a Christmas card and life from John David Eaton, the Toronto Merchant Prince.

Besides his wife, former Ethel Hodder, he is survived by a sister, Mrs E. M. (Margaret) Grove who makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. Gwen Smith of Exeter.
