The community was shocked on Monday evening t hear of the sudden passing at the home of his sister in Galt of Joseph Appleyard, prominent and highly esteemed resident of this village. Mr. Appleyard suffered a heart attack last Tuesday, and on Friday was taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. W. G. Fallen, 33 Brant Road North, Galt. Again stricken in his room Monday evening, the attack proved fatal. Mr. Appleyard, who was in his 71st year, was born in Lincolnshire, England, and at the age of six years he came to Canada with his parents and settled at Port Colborne, Ont. The family lived there for two years and Mr. Appleyard attended Port Colborne school. They then moved to the Muskoka district. In 1885, Mr. Appleyard moved to Galt, and had lived in this vicinity ever since. For some years he was a driver for George Hancock and Georg Taylor in Galt, and later operated farms at Wrigley's Corners and Roseville. He came to Ayr to live 10 years ago. Since coming to Ayr, he had taken a prominent part in the life of the community and for several years was a member of the council. He was a member of Knox United Church. Mr. Appleyard had a wide circle of friends who will mourn his passing. His wife predeceased him about a year ago. Three sons have also died. William was killed in action in the Great War; Clarence died after the war as the result of war injuries, and George was killed in a blast accident in Mexico four years ago. Surviving are four brothers and three sisters, viz.: George, Galt; Arthur, Hamilton; James, London; Walter, Aldershot; Mrs. A. Thomson, Ayr; Mrs. W. T. Murray, Rockland, and Mrs. W. G. Fallen, Galt.
