    Mrs. Helen Reuter

    PRESTON\emdash Mrs. Helen Reuter, 66, of 126 Dover St., South, Preston, widow of Stanley Reuter, died today at the South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, Galt, after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Reuter was the former Helen McGinnis and was born at Galt, Ont. She had resided in Preston for 45 years and was affiliated with the Christian Science Church, Galt. Mrs. Reuter was predeceased by her husband, 13 years ago. Surviving are three sons, Alan and Edward both of Preston and Frederick of Chatham, three daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Margaret) Buchanan, of San Jose, Calif., Mrs. Bruce (Gloria) Wilkins and Mrs. John (Dorothy) Wilkins, both of Preston, one sister, Mrs. Jennie MacDonald, of Los Angeles, Calif. and eight grandchildren. A private funeral will be conducted at the Stager-Barthel Funeral Home Friday at 3: 30 p.m., interment will follow in Preston Cemetery.

    Allan Edward Reuter was born in Preston on 9 Aug 1914, the oldest of six children and son of Stanley Reuter, a skilled wood pattern maker, and his wife Helen McGinnis. He attended both Central Public School in Preston and Galt Collegiate. Family finances did not allow him to complete his high school education and at the age of sixteen Mr Reuter left school to take a job as an office boy at Preston's Savage Shoe Co. He rose to become an office manager just before joining the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1943. Following his discharge in 1945 he commenced his own practice as a public accountant and developed an expertise as a trustee in bankruptcy.
    In 1959 Mr Reuter was elected to Preston council but resigned his seat on 19 Jun 1961 in protest over the process of the selection of the Reeve. He returned to council the following year serving as Preston's Mayor for a two year term. Just before the completion of his term as Mayor, Mr Reuter was elected to represent Waterloo South in the Provincial Legislature. Mr Reuter retained his seat in the Provincial House in the elections of 1967 and 1971. While in the House he served on a number of committees including public accounts, natural resources and government commissions as well as acting as chairman of the Private Bills Committee, the largest standing committee of the legislature. In February 1968, Premier John Robarts appointed Mr. Reuter to the post of Chairman of the Committee of the Whole House which included the responsibilities of the Deputy Speaker of the House.

    In 1971 he answered a call from the Premier to become the 28th Speaker of the Ontario Legislature replacing retiring Speaker Fred Cass. His handling of the Speaker's role drew praise from government and opposition leaders alike for the complete impartiality of his rulings. He resigned as Speaker in October 1974 due to ill health and did not seek re-election in the 1975 election.

    Mr Reuter was an honourary member of the Preston-Hespeler Rotary Club and was a life member of the Preston Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He also pursued an interest in music, playing a number of instruments including the guitar, clarinet, saxophone, and ukulele. He played clarinet for a number of years in the Preston Concert Band, now the Cambridge Concert Band, and played guitar in a dance band. He died on 31 Dec 1982 and is buried in Preston's Parklawn Cemetery.

    REUTER, Allan E. (Former Speaker of the House at Queen's Park)

    At Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Friday, Dec. 31, 1982, beloved husband of Phyllis King, of 538 Duke St., Cambridge, in his 69th year. Dear father of Michael of Waterloo, Paul and Pat (Mrs. Garry Becker), both of Cambridge. Also survived by two brothers, Edward of Durham, Frederick of Chatham; three sisters, Gloria (Mrs. Bruce Wilkins), Dorothy (Mrs. Jack Wilkins), both of Cambridge, Margaret (Mrs. Bruce Buchanan) of California and four grandchildren, Funeral services for Mr. Reuter were held this afternoon (Monday) at St. Paul's United Church, at 2 p.m. Interment in Parklawn cemetery.

    WILKINS, Dorothy Amanda (nee Reuter) - Passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital, at sunrise on Sunday, September 23, 2007, in her 81st year. Survived by her loving husband of 57 years, John (Dooley) Wilkins. Dear mother of Mary and her husband Wayne Burnet of Cambridge, and Thomas Wilkins and Heather Fliegel of Wasaga Beach. Dorothy was a special "Gaga" to Brooke Burnet and loving "Grandma" to Thomas and Katelyn Wilkins. She will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was the last surviving member of her family, having been predeceased by her parents, Stanley and Helen Reuter and her brothers, Allan (Phyllis) Reuter, Fred (Mary) Reuter and Ted, as well as her sisters, Margaret (Bruce) Buchanan and Gloria (Bruce) Wilkins. As per Dorothy's request, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to a memorial gathering to celebrate Dorothy's life in the Coutts Reception Cottage, 96 St. Andrew's St., Cambridge on Saturday, September 29, 2007 from 1-3 p.m. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Stirling Height Long Term Care Centre, as well as the doctors and nursing staff at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital for their kindness, compassion and loving care at this difficult time.
