Waterloo's first school was built in 1820. It was built of logs and stood on rising ground on the south side of Church Street near King. It served the community for 23 years and was then removed to a site east of the present Collegiate and Technical Institute, on King Street, Kitchener, where it served as a residence for fifty years, being occupied by a colored family named Carroll for a long time.....Abraham Erb knew the value of education as was proved in later years when he made provision for promoting it. It is therefore certain that he took a prominent part in organizing the building of this first school in 1820.

The first teacher who taught in the old schoolhouse was Jonathan Good, brother of Joel Good of Waterloo. He was a small, delicate man but it was said that he was one of the best teachers who taught in the old school. He kept good order in school and out of it. He used the birch rather freely, and sometimes punished scholars larger than himself. He was a good German reader but was deficient in English. He was an expert penman and clever in making quill pens for the scholars.

    THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. Eby, Waterloo, 69; Wendel Baumann, Woolwich, 68; Henry Stauffer, Erbsville, 67; Simon Beatty, Elmira, 67; Jakob Ratz, New Hamburg, 67; Israel Baumann, Berlin, 65; George Elbert, Moorefield, 63; George H. Baumann, Elmira, 63; John Devitt, Waterloo, 62; Richard Quickfall, Bridgeport, 62; Isaak Hoffmann, Waterloo, 61; Robert Barkwell, Peel, 60; Diana McMahon, nee Dekay, Berlin, 60; Thomas Quickfall, Floradale, 60; Benjamin Devitt, Waterloo, 60; Isaak Devitt, Floradale, 58; John Longmann, Peel, 57. In addition, to these, the teacher read the names of 25 pupils from the roll; they were, however, absent.

Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

GOOD, JOSEPH may be regarded as the first physician to establish a permanent practise in Waterloo. An obituary in the Daily Telegraph of May 10, 1904, provides some of the information about him.

The late Dr. Good was born in Lancaster County, Pa., December 19, 1805, and for about fifty years resided in Waterloo on the farm known as the Unger farm, on which Mr. Allan Shantz now resides, he commenced the practise of medicine in 1833. Deceased was a brother of Mr. Joel Good of Waterloo, who is still quite hearty at the age of 88, and also a brother of Mr. Samuel Good of Wallace who is 81 years of age. He was a pupil in Waterloo's first school, but it is not known where he obtained his medical education. He was not registered by the Ontario college of Physicians and Surgeons until 1874. An early reference to him is found in the Canada Museum of February 23. 1839.

Dr. Guth (German spelling) is a particularly skillful and successful surgeon, wherof he has often given proof, and has earned the confidence of those who have required his help.

His father may have been recognized as a healer, as he is mentioned by Dr. Scott in a manner which suggests it was an accepted thing.

Apart from the publication of a medical certificate, and accounts of his attendance on various accident victims, there is little mention of Dr. Good in the newspapers. An item in 1872 concerns his son Israel who was 16 years old, five feet nine inches tall, and weighed 264 pounds. The last entry found regarding him in Waterloo was in 1873. By 1878 he was listed in a directory as practising in Formosa. There was little to show for forty some years of practise.

The rest of the obituary notice in the Telegraph reads. Dr. Joseph Good, of Formosa, died at his home on Monday, May 9th. aged 98 years 4 months and 20 days. Deceased had been feeble for the past year.

    Historic Building:
The Good-Shantz House was built about 1846 by Joseph Good. The property upon which Good erected his Georgian style home was acquired from Samuel Bricker by Joseph's father John in 1810 as part of a 148-acre parcel of land.
Retaining much of the original structure including doors, floors and exterior details, the house displays many outstanding features. Among these are the moulded trim and authentic shutters, eared window pediments, blind attic window, and returned eaves on the front gable.
In the extensive renovations by Allen Shantz carried out after 1896, the entrance was altered and the semi-circular verandah, with its newel posts topped by cannon ball finials were added to enhance the building's appearance. Fundamental changes to the roof line and the addition of a stained glass parlor window also helped to convert a simple Georgian style home to its present late Victorian appearance.
With the exception of the west elevation, the entire exterior of the Good-Shantz-Bosch house is designated a Heritage Landmark. The extensive turn of the century renovation completed by Shantz was highlighted in this designation. The home is currently owned by Wilfrid Laurier University. It was purchased, renovated and donated to the University by David and Sandra Pady. The University has called it Lucinda House after Lucinda Shantz.1a

John Wilkie Killed In Fall Into Hold of Bare Michigan
Head Badly Fractured When Man Falls 14 Feet.
    Hit Steel Work
Was Alone at the time That Accident Occurred

John Wilkie, 54 years of age, residing at 147 1_th street west, was almost instantly killed on Wednesday night when he fell into the hold of the barge Michigan, owned by the John Harrison & Sons Co., Limited as she was tied up at a coal dock on the west side of the harbor. He was so terribly injured that he passed away about 15 minutes after he had been taken to the General and Marin hospital, an did not regain consciousness.

The unfortunate man, who was employed as one of the engineers on the barge has assisted in loading some of the coal, and had been operating the crane, and at the conclusion of his work had come down to the deck of the boat from the engine room. One of the hatches had not been closed up and it ws into this hatch that Mr. Wilkie fell, a distance of 14 feet, his head striking the steel work on the bottom. Just what caused him to fall is unknown. Mr. A. Mackie, who was the second crane man, missed him after he had come down and who found him in the hold of the barge. He at once secured assistance, Dr. Gaviller was called and immediately ordered the injured man removed to the hospital. The ambulance was secured and he was hurried away, but it was apparent from the first that there was no hope of recovery, as the man's head was in a terrible condition, the skull being fractured and part of it was almost pulp.

The late Mr. Wilkie was a native of Bruce county, and was born in the township of Culross on December 31, 1875. He was the son of the late Mr. And Mrs. William Wilkie. He was married on August 28th, 1901 to Miss Bessie McBeath of Skipness and was employed for of 16 years at Shallow Lake, where he worked at the cement works and later spent seven years at Hepworth and four years at Park Head. He came to Owen Sound in October last and assisted in fitting up the barge Michigan which had been purchased by John Harrison and Sons Co. Limited. He was considered an efficient and faithful workman, and was well liked by his associates on the boat.

He is survived by his wife and a family of seven children. Mrs. Will Currie of Park Head; Mrs. Stanley Buckton of Hepworth; Meville, Teena, John, Lillian and Irene at home. He also leaves two brothers, Joseph, Shallow Lake, Erse? Big Valley, Alberta and two sister Mrs. Goldwin Cherry of Ward, Nipissing district and Mrs. Frank Wilson also of Ward.

My grandfather was born Dec. 21, 1875 and was married to Jessie McBeath on August 28, 1901 . His named on the certificate is John Wilkey ( it is also noted that way in the Good family bible but he spelled him name Wilkie) Witness at the wedding were Joseph Wilkie (his brother) and Mary Walker. They were married at Skipness, County of Bruce, Ont.

He is listed on the 1881 cencus. At the age of 6 years old his father William Wilkie died from typhoid fever in 1885 and he and his brother Joseph lived with his aunt Magdelena (Good) and Levi Erb for a while. His mother Mary married again a second time to William Hambley. I have a copy of that wedding certificate as well. The children show up as Hambley in the next census.

    Notes:

Tony Matlock of Kitchener phoned to say he helped to launch Washerama in downtown Kitchener in 1958 with partners Ralph Meyer and Howard Davis. It sold washing machines and home appliances. The name, he said, was a spin on the General Motors "Motorama" held at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.

One of the firm's early challenges, Matlock said, was that it didn't have the rights to sell Electrohome products. It found a solution in the early 1960s by buying Good Appliances (owner Newton Good) at 74 King St. S., Waterloo, which did hold an Electrohome franchise.
