    68 Years In North Dumfries

The hand of death has been heavily laid on this community during the past few weeks. Once more it is our duty to chronicle the passing of another old resident in the person of Mrs. John C. Mitchell, lot 31, con 9, North Dumfries, who succumbed to pneumonia on Friday evening after a brief illness, at the age of 71 years. the deceased, whose maiden name was Margaret Currie, was born in Selkirkshire, Scotland, in 1834 and came to Canada at the early age of three years, settling on the lot where she died, now owned by Mr. Wm. Gemmell. She had thus been a resident of North Dumfries for the long period of 68 years and was an eye witness to the great changes that have characterized the progress of the country from the primeval stage, when it was little better than a howling wilderness, to one of the finest agricultural sections in Ontario. Her father's family consisted of twelve children, only one of whom \endash Mr. Henry Currie of Blenheim \endash survives. She was twice married, her first husband (James Graham) dying many years ago and the one whose name she bore to the grave predeceased her by several years. Two children survive: Mr. James Graham, Carberry, Man., and Catherine (now Mrs. John Graham), Port Huron. Mich. A step-daughter (Mrs. Wm. Gemmell, nee Mitchell) also survives. Mrs. Mitchell was a consistent member of Knox church and her rather sudden demise will be deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends. The funeral to Ayr cemetery on Monday was largely attended. The services were conducted by deceased's pastor, Rev. John Thomson, assisted by Rev. Mr. Nixon. The pallbearers were Messrs. Robert Morton, Jas. Morton, Jas. Malone, John Gemmell, John Marshall and James Currie (nephew).

    Passing of John Currie
Lived Upwards of 90 Years in This Community

This week we have to chronicle the passing of the oldest resident of the community in the person of John Currie, who died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Robert Smuck, Paris Road, on Monday, June 20th, at the ripe age of over 95 years. The deceased was born in Roxboroughshire, Scotland, and came to Canada at the age of four years, settling on the farm now occupied by Mr. Stephen Gemmell, afterwards locating at different periods on several other farms in the locality.

Over 40 years ago Mr. Currie discontinued farming and moved into Ayr, where he started a coal yard, being the first coal merchant in the village. During the time he was farming, he also did a lot of teaming between here and Hamilton, and other points from lake to lake.

To have lived upwards of 90 years in one community falls to the lot of few men. The changes he witnessed in that long period can probably be better imagined than described. Suffice it that in his early days the country was in a crude state. There were no railroads and in fact very few and very indifferent roads of any kind. The forests were the rendezvous of Indians, wolves, bears and highway men, and the whole country was passing through the throes of a rebellion. He successfully weathered all these adverse conditions and prospered as the country developed.

Mr. Currie was a Reformer in politics and a Presbyterian in religion, being a member of Knox United Church. His partner in life was Agnes Pringle, who predeceased him some years. A family of five were born to them - two of whom, Isabell and William, have passed on before.

Those living are Mrs. Geo. Swan, sr., Ayr; Mrs. Margaret Bell, Galt; and Mrs. Robert Smuck, South Dumfries. A brother and sister, Peter Currie and Mrs. Christie (Toronto), also survive. Interment was made in the Ayr cemetery yesterday, the funeral being very largely attended. Rev. J. J. Brown conducted the services, and the pallbearers were principally grandchildren, viz., Currie Smuck, John, Ewart and James Bell, Robert Smuck and George H. Lawrence.

    Passing of a Pioneer

Peter Currie. Toronto, Succumbs After a Short Illness

The pioneers of this section are rapidly passing away. On Sunday last Mr. Peter Currie, Toronto, a former resident of this community, joined the throng that have gone before. He was born near Ayr nearly 84 years ago, and had lived here all his life up to about 15 years ago, when he removed to the Queen City. Usually of a robust constitution, he had been ill only a few weeks when death supervened. The deceased, who was a bachelor, was of a retiring, unassuming disposition, and was highly esteemed for personal worth. When here he was a consistent member of Stanley Street Church, and in politics was a Liberal. Two brothers, William and John, predeceased him, while a sister, Mrs. Christie of Toronto, survives. Mrs. Robt. Smuck, Paris road, and Mrs. Bell, Galt, are nieces. The funeral took place to the Ayr cemetery Tuesday morning on the arrival of the train from Toronto, Rev. J. J. Brown conducting the service. The pallbearers were Messrs. John L. Black, Douglas Lillico, Currie Smuck, Ewart Bell, Thos. Guthrie and Robt. Smuck. Among the relatives from a distance who attended the obsequies here were Mr. Fred. Currie, Guelph; Miss Christie and Mr. Wanless, Toronto, and Mrs. Bell and son Ewart, Galt.

    Demise of William Currie

There passed away last Wednesday evening, William Currie, who for the past eight years resided in Ayr. Born in the Township of Dumfries in the year 1841 Mr. Currie experienced a great deal of the hardships of pioneer life. IN 1869 he married Agnes Little of Blue Lake, who predeceased him ten years. A family of three survive him - Frederick, Jean and Isabel. Mr. Currie also leaves two brothers, John and peter of Ayr, and one sister, Mrs. Christie of Toronto. The deceased was a man of good ability, and was up till his death a valued member of Session of Stanley-st. church. In his early life he took a keen interest in Sunday School work and one of the best tributes to his sterling character and uprightness is found in the circumstance that he continued in that work for 55 years and during that time he organized a large number of rural Sunday Schools. His funeral on Saturday to the Ayr cemetery showed the esteem in which he was held by the large number who gathered to pay their last respects. The pallbearers were Messrs. John G. Watson, C. McGeorge, Wm. Richmond; James Richardson, J. L. Black, and David Brown. He was 72 years of age.

    Death of Mrs. Smuck

Expired Suddenly on Tuesday Afternoon While Visiting at Preston

Death came suddenly to Mrs. Robert Smuck, South Dumfries, on Tuesday afternoon while visiting at the home of her sister-in-law. Mrs. George Cross, Preston. Accompanied by her son, Currie, she had motored to that town for a short visit on Tuesday morning. While returning to the home of Mrs. Cross after being down town, she complained of a sudden heart attack and had to be assisted the remaining 50 yards to the residence. Medical assistance was quickly summoned, but to no avail, death resulting in a few moments. Mrs. Smuck, whose maiden name was Agnes Currie, was a daughter of the late John Currie. She was born on the farm now occupied by A. W. Snyder, and after her marriage 39 years ago went to reside on the farm of her husband three miles south of Ayr. She was a member of Knox United Church and took an active part in the different women's organizations of the congregation, taking a particular interest in the affairs of the Kate M. Thomson mission auxiliary. She will be greatly missed in the social life of the community, where her pleasing personality won for her a host of warm friends. Besides her sorrowing husband, she is survived by one son, Currie; also by one sister, Mrs. Margaret Bell, of Ayr. The funeral will take place this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock to the Ayr Cemetery.

    Died in the North West

We sincerely regret to have to record the death at Calgary, N.W.T., on Saturday last, of a young man well-known and highly esteemed in this village and country, in the person of Albert John Currie, second son of Mr. Wm. Currie of Ayr, aged 25 years. The deceased went to the Northwest last spring and engaged in ranching with his brother Fred, who had preceded him some two years. They were doing well and intended becoming permanent settlers. Some three weeks ago, however, Albert contracted typhoid fever and was taken to the Calgary hospital, where he received every attention possible, being visited almost daily by his brother and an aunt, Miss Jane Little, who resided in Calgary. He continued to grow worse, however, and on Saturday passed away somewhat suddenly. The body was brought here for interment, accompanied by deceased's brother, and the funeral takes place to Ayr cemetery this (Thursday) afternoon. Albert John was an exemplary young man and a host of friends in and about Ayr, his birthplace, will deeply regret his demise. The father, sisters and brother who survive - his mother having predeceased him some 2-1/2 years - will have the sympathy of the entire community. One sister, Isabella, resides in Winnipeg, Jane in Galt and Agnes at home. The funeral takes place at 2.30 from the residence of deceased's uncle, Mr. John Currie, and will doubtless be largely attended.
