Benjamin Baumann, "eldest son of Wendel and Maria (Huber) Baumann, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, February 15th, 1787. He was married to Susannah, daughter of Joseph and Magdalena (Allenbach) Bechtel. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, June 16th, 1797 and died September 19th, 1870. In spring of 1815 he came to Canada, prospecting the country. He found Waterloo to be a favorable county for the forming of settlements. In fall of the same year, he in company with Jonathan B. Baumann and John Brubacher (Deacon Johney), returned to Pennsylvania. In 1818 he, in company with Christian Burkholder and family, John Good and family, old Betty Baumann (wife of Peter Baumann), old Esther Cressman, Samuel Bechtel and others, came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Waterloo County, Ontario Canada, making the journey in 28 days. On arriving here he settled on lot No. 54, German Company's Tract, township of Waterloo, about two miles south-east of Berlin, where he resided until his death. The farm is now owned by his son, Rev. Samuel Baumann. They had a family of nine children."

Joseph Baumann, "son of Wendel and Mary (Huber) Baumann, grandson of Christian Baumann, and great grandson of the old progenitor, Wendel Baumann, was born in the Alleghany Valley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, March 8th, 1796. In May, 1819, he left his native home and came to Canada, arriving at old Abraham Erb's place in Waterloo, some time in the month of June. After being here for a few weeks he engaged himself to Abraham Erb to manufacture flour barrels, and other ware belonging to the coopering trade. He had his home with old Christian Schantz who resided on a large farm, about one and one-half miles south-east of Berlin, now in possession Aaron B. Shantz. Here he formed the acquaintance of Anna, the eldest daughter of Christian Shantz, whom he married September 23rd, 1821. She was born October 19th, 1801, and died October 19th, 1822, aged 21 years. This union, although of but thirteen months duration, was blessed with one child, a daughter named Anna, who was born July 16th, 1822, and died August 10th, 1822, aged 25 days. After the decease of his wife he still continued in the services of old Abraham Erb, and had his home with his father-in-law. Some time during the year 1824 he formed an acquaintance with Elizabeth, daughter of George and Barbara (Good) Hoffman. She was born February 12th, 1795. On February 20th, 1825 they were married. In the spring of the same year they moved on their farm, being composed of lot No. 27, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until their deaths. He died December 21st, 1864, and she died May 6th, 1879. Their family consists of seven children,"

She was born near Freeport, Ontario, on August 7th, 1828. On March 25th, 1845, they moved on their farm (The farm is composed of lot No. 4, north of Bleam's Road, Wilmot) near Manheim where they still reside. On May 1st, 1853, he was ordained deacon of the church of his choice, and on January 2nd, 1859, he was ordained minister of the Mennonite denomination. He was, in his days, one of the best pulpit orators that the church possessed, and even yet in his old days his sermons convince both friends and enemies that he is a man of more than ordinary ability. His family consisted of twelve children,"

Pre. Moses S. Bowman.

Near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ontario, on January 4th, 1898, Pre. Moses S. Bowman, aged 78 years, 1 month and 26 days. He was married to Anna Cressman in 1844, and the union was blest with six sons and six daughters of whom all but one son survive him. He has left also, 53 surviving grandchildren. On May 1st, 1853, he was chosen as deacon, and on January 2d, 1859, he was ordained a minister of the Mennonite church. For upwards of thirty-five years he worked earnestly and faithfully for the Master who had blessed him with a clear intellect, a keen insight into human nature, fluent language, and great spiritual power, so that his sermons were always attentively listened to. His preaching was of the conversational order, and his words thus seemed to be directed to every individual rather than to the congregation as a body, and as he spoke directly to the heart, reason and conscience of his hearer, his words never failed to make a deep impression. He was greatly interested in the cause of temperance, and his efforts in this direction, especially in Sunday school work, have been productive of much good. In the capacity of husband, father, neighbor and friend, his conduct was such as to gain for him the respect and esteem of all who knew him. During the last four years of his life he did not take an active part in the ministry, owing to impaired mental and bodily power, but he looked forward serenely for the coming of his Lord, and when his physician, during his last visit, told him that he had not many hours to live, he expressed his pleasure that he was so soon to be summoned to be in the presence of the King, where we believe he now is, and is to remain forever more.
On Jan. 7, he was followed to his last resting place in the Latschar cemetery by a large concourse of people, on which occasion Bishop Amos Cressman spoke in German from John 11: 25, 26, and Noah Stauffer in English from Luke 2: 29-32, and Heb. 11: 14, 16.

He is a fluent speaker and a good worker in the Lord's vineyard. His sermons always make a deep impression upon the minds of the attentive audience. His family consists of twelve children".

BOWMAN - Tobias Bowman was born June 26, 1829; died Sept. 2, 1909; aged 80 y. 2 m. 6 d. On April 24, 1853, he was united in holy matrimony with Anna Snyder. To this union were born 12 children of whom 8 are living, who with the mother mourn the loss of one who has been kind and affectionate as husband and father. Bro. Bowman was ordained to the ministry in the Mennonite church of Waterloo Co., Ont., in 1875, in which office he labored faithfully for many years. Though for a number of years he had not done any active ministerial work, yet he kept the faith and was glad to be with the brethren in worship and at communion. The end did not come unexpectedly. Last winter he believed the end of his life was near, and had chosen the text and also who was to officiate at his funeral. But when Spring came he recovered considerably again until about two weeks before his death. Funeral on Sunday, Sept. 5. Services at the house and at the Cressman Mennonite Church near Breslau, Ont. Services were conducted in English by C. B. Snyder from Rev. 14: 13, and in German by Jacob Woolner, Sr., from Isa. 3: 10.

Samuel S. Bowman, "the fifth son of Benjamin and Susannah (Bechtel) Baumann, was born July 15th, 1834, on the farm he now owns. His boyhood days were spent on the farm. After he had attained the age of eighteen or twenty years, he commenced teaching our public schools during the winter months. When a young man he joined the church of his choice, the Mennonite body. After the decease of Rev. Abraham C. Weber it was deemed expedient by the church to have a minister appointed to assist the aged ministers, Jacob Oberholtzer and John Steckley, in the teaching of the "Word" according to their views. On February 2nd, 1878, he was ordained as minister of the Gospel. His untiring energy, together with his clear thought and common sense, soon raised him to be one of the best pulpit declaimers of our day. It did not take a long time until friends and enemies became convinced that he was by no means a man of ordinary ability. His sermons are short, instructive and encouraging to the child of God, while the sinner is powerfully convinced of his fallen state and earnestly entreated to become a child of God. On December 1st, 1861, he was married to Elizabeth Ploch who was born May 1st, 1839, and died January 30th, 1886. After her decease he married Anna, daughter of Samuel and Barbara (Cressman) Cressman. She was born February 15th, 1844. The second marriage took place March 24th, 1887. His family consists of four children"

Bowman. - Samuel S. Bowman was born near Kitchener, Ont., July 15, 1834; died Nov. 24, 1924; aged 90 y. 4 m. 9 d. On Dec. 1, 1861, he was married to Elizabeth Ploch, who died Jan. 30, 1886. Of this marriage there were four children, two of whom survive. They are Mrs. John Moss (with whom he had his home) and Tillman E. His elder son (Simon) predeceased him on Mar. 12 of this year. There are also thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. On Mar. 24, 1887, he was married to Anna Cressman who predeceased him on Aug. 28, 1908. In his young days he taught school, and also followed the trade of carpentering for some time, but the greater part of his life was spent on the farm where he was born and died. Bro. Bowman was converted and united with the Mennonite church at the age of twenty-one. On Feb. 2, 1878, he was ordained as a minister of the Gospel in which capacity he was very faithful in performing his duty, rarely ever missing a church service until a little more than a year ago, when bodily weakness prevented him. He was blessed with an exceptionally good memory which he kept to a remarkable degree in his old age. In his passing the church is losing one of its oldest pillars. Among other things he pre-arranged for the speakers and texts to be used at the funeral. He was laid to rest on Nov. 29. Services at the house were conducted by Bro. Ben. Shantz and at the Mennonite church at Kitchener by the brethren, M. Hallman (Text, II Cor. 5: 1,2) and Jonas Snider (Text, II Tim. 4: 7,8). Such a large number of people gathered to pay their last respects to the departed brother that it was necessary to conduct a service in the basement of the church where the brethren, M. H. Shantz and H. W. Stevanus, were the speakers.

Snyder-On April 24, 1903, at Berlin Ontario. Elizabeth (Bowman) Snyder widow of the late Moses K Snyder, aged 67Y. 5M, 25D. She had been a sufferer during the last two years, since the railway accident in which her husband was killed while driving over a railroad crossing in Berlin Ont. She suffered over 150 days at the home of Bro. Wendel E Shantz, where her sufferings ended. She was a consistent member of the Mennonite church for a number of years. Services were conducted at the Berlin Mennonite M.H. by E.S Hallman (text Rev.7: 13,14) and Daniel Wismer (text Rev 21: 4) Services at the house by Noah Stauffer (text Job 14: 14).

The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Snyder occurred in Berlin last in her 68th year, of consumption. She was the widow of the late Moses Snyder, who was killed in a railway crossing accident in Berlin nearly two years ago. She was with her husband at the time of the accident and had a very narrow escape. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder lived for many years on their farm near Berlet's Corners.

There passed away last Saturday an aged and widely known resident of Woolwich township in the person of Wendel R. Bauman. His wife died several years ago, and of the large family only three children are living, namely, Menno living at Floradale, Mrs. Peter Ziegler at West Montrose, and Mrs. Joseph Musselman in Berlin. The burial took place at the Elmira Mennonite cemetery on Tuesday forenoon.

THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

Obituary: As we are preparing to go to press we are informed that Mr. Geo. H. Bauman, one of our most respected and progressive farmers, has died. Mr. Bauman was one of the earliest settlers in this neighborhood having moved to the farm on which he ended his days and part of which is within the limits of the Corporation of Elmira, in the prime of his manhood. He was known as a man of character, industrious reliable and considerate of the rights of his fellow citizens. He was very successful in his calling and acquired several farms in the immediate vicinity of Elmira. He was of a kind disposition and made many friends, who together with his wife and family of 8 sons and 4 daughters mourn his loss. Possessing a robust constitution and an energetic mind he was always active until several years ago when he was stricken by partial paralysis. Although he gradually rallied from the effects of this misfortune he was never the same afterwards repeated attacks and their effect confined him to his house a considerable part of the time. He reached the age of 72 years. His remains will be entered in the Mennonite Cemetery at Elmira, next Saturday forenoon.

Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

Bauman - Martin H. Bauman was born Dec. 21, 1834; died Jan. 21, 1915; aged 80 y. 1 m. He was married to Rebecca Shantz. This union was blessed with 10 children, of whom 7 are still living; also 66 out of 80 grandchildren, and 7 of 8 great-grandchildren. He joined the Mennonite Church early in life and remained faithful to the end. He was one of those who could give good advice on many subjects, and his advice and example many do well to follow. Services and burial at Martin's Church near St. Jacob's Ont., Jan. 24, conducted by Ezra Martin and Tobias Martin.

Bergey, Louisa, eldest daughter of Pre. Moses S. and Anna Cressman Bowman and beloved wife of deacon David Bergey, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov.28, 1845; died at her home near New Dundee,Ont., Jan.11, 1931; aged 85 y. 1. m 14d. On Dec.31, 1872, she was married to David Bergey. This union was blessed with 4 sons and 3 daughters. Two preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, 2 daughters (Amelia and Ida ), 3 sons ( Gilbert, Milton, and Herbert), 10 grandchildren,4 sisters,4 brothers. At the age of 25 she confessed Christ and united with the Mennonite Church of which she was a faithful member to death. She was a regular attendant at church services, seldom missing a service. She was a real help to her husband in his work as deacon in the Church. She enjoyed good health all her life and bore her brief illness with patience; looking forward in happy anticipation for the triumphal entry into the Glory World. Her last desire was to be "where there is fullness of joy and pleasure forever-more." Funeral services were held Jan.14, at the home and at Blenheim Mennonite Church near New Dundee,Ont., by Bros. M.H. Shantz and S.F. Coffman. Text, II Cor.5: 9. Interment in cemetery nearby.

Mrs. Henry Baer Dies in 91st Year

In Good Health Until Ten Days Ago When She Fell and Fractured Her Hip.

Death claimed the third oldest resident of this community in the person of Mrs Henry Baer who passed away at the home of her son, Mr Moses Baer and Mrs. Baer, one and one-half miles west of the village on Friday The late Mrs Baer had been in good health until the preceding Sunday when she fell and fractured her hip. Mrs. Baer whose maiden name was Leah Bowman, was born at Mannheim on May 16, 1847, a daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Moses Bowman. She was married to Mr. Henry Baer in 1868 and they engaged in farming near Zurich and Petersburg for many years. Her husband predeceased her in 1928 and Mrs. Baer has resided with her son Mr Moses Baer for the last number of years The late Mrs. Bauer was a member of the Latschar Mennonite Church at Mannheim. She is survived by nine of her fourteen children four daughters and five sons. namely Mrs. Daniel Eby of Petersburg, Mrs. William Bachert of Kitchener Mrs Ervin Shantz of Freeport, Mrs John Francis of Kitchener, Moses Baer of New Dundee. Ephraim of Haysville Simon of Mannheim, Josiah of Wainwright, Alta, and Norman of Rosebank: fifty-three grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren, two sisters. Mrs. Susannah Shantz of Kitchener and Mrs. John Berry of Langley Prairie, B.C.; and three brothers Aaron Bowman of Mannheim, Noah of Guernsey, Sask, and Ezra of Lynn Mo

The funeral in charge of Bishop M. Hallman of Mannheim was held at the Latschar Mennonite Church on Monday afternoon following a brief service at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Baer. Interment was made in the adjoining remetery.

Shantz. - Anna Bowman, beloved wife of W. E. Shantz, Berlin, Ont., died Aug. 15, 1916; aged 65 y. 6 m. 19 d. She was the third eldest daughter of the late Pre. Moses Bowman of Manheim. She leaves to mourn their loss a loving husband, 4 daughters, and 3 sons, besides relatives and friends.The funeral services were held Aug. 22 at the Berlin Mennonite Church, conducted by Bros. U. K. Weber and S. F. Coffman, Psa. 23 was read and the text chosen was II Cor. 5: 1: " For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."Sister Shantz was a faithful Christian and member of the Mennonite Church since her youth. She also had the pleasure of seeing all her family brought into the fold of Christ. Her presence in the community and at services will be greatly missed for she was of a kind and loving disposition always ready and anxious to help those in need; and the hungry stranger who came to her door was fed and sheltered. " As ye have done it unto one of the least of these, ye did it unto me." She suffered from a complication of diseases for about 18 months, being cared for by her daughters, who deemed it a great privilege to minister to her every need. Her sufferings at times were very intense, but she never murmured or complained, bearing all with Christian fortitude and patience. The end came unexpectedly as a result of heart failure, but she always testified that she was ready to meet her Savior and the family need not mourn as those having no hope, for " Though she be dead, yet she liveth."

Bowman - The sunset hours of Friday, April 28, saw the passing of Bro. Moses C. Bowman of Kitchener, one of the older and respected citizens of the community. On Thursday he suffered a slight stroke, was unconscious for three hours, but rallied to such a remarkable extent that his recovery seemed probable, when suddenly, after conversing with friends, with no premonition, his spirit slipped away.Bro. Bowman was born on Jan. 1, 1855, at Mannheim, Ont. He was the son of Pre. Moses S. Bowman. He was married the first time to Lydia Shantz, Feb. 5, 1878, who predeceased him in 1899. He was later married to Susanna E. Shantz, Oct. 25, 1900.He is survived by his wife, and 5 children, from his first wife (Alvah S. and Edwin S. of Guernsey, Sask.; Henry S. of Waterloo, Malinda S. of Kitchener, and Moses S. of Mannheim), 16 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Henry Baer, Mannheim, Mrs. David Shuh and Mrs. Menno Shantz, both of Kitchener; Aaron of Mannheim; Noah of Guernsey, Sask.; Mrs. John Berry, Langley, British Columbia; and Ezra of Freedom, Mo.Bro. Bowman was a widely and well known, both as a man and a minister of the Gospel for 44 years. As such he was a consistent Christian, a staunch churchman, and a vigorous minister, whose services were widely used. Besides being one of the pastors of the Mannheim Mennonite Church, he served outlying places such as Zurich, South Cayuga, Sherkston, Bothwell, and Rainham, in his earlier days, he also labored among the local churches. His counsel in Conference work was valuable in many directions, and often sought after by other workers. He was a versatile and apt conversationalist, ready with wisdom and wholesome philosophy, which unraveled many difficult problems. He was a lover of good men, well informed, an interested citizen, a pleasant neighbor, who radiated a good deal of cheer by his remarkable fund of illustrations gathered during his long life, and kept ready by a well trained memory.He was one of the men who kept his faith strong by a constant devotion to the living God. Many men allow the experiences of life and much constant distress to crush them. Bro. Bowman seemed to have learned the art of making such stepping stones to a higher life and greater conquest.The funeral was held Wednesday at the home and at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, and interment at the Latschar Mennonite Cemetery at Mannheim. "(New Dundee) Stricken with a heart attack, Aaron C. Bowman, 79, a lifelong resident of the Mannheim district, died suddenly Monday at his home. Born July 23, 1861, he was son the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Bowman and had lived his entire life on the farm where he died. He celebrated his golden wedding anniversary several years ago. Mr. Bowman was an active member of Latschar Mennonite church.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Bricker, a son Walter of Twenty Nine Palms, Calif., four daughters, Mrs. George Milne of Mannheim, Miss Sylvia of Detroit, Mrs. Leslie Musselman of Preston and Mrs. Eldon Musselman of Detroit, a brother Ezra of Linn, Mo., two sisters, Mrs. Susannah Shantz of Kitchener and Mrs. John Berry of Longly Prairie, B.C., and 9 grandchildren....Latschar Mennonite Cemetery...."

EBY. - On Sept. 21st 1895, near Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ont., Hannah, wife of David Eby, aged 46 years and 23 days. A sorrowing husband and four young children, one son and three daughters, mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother. She was for many years a consistent member of the Mennonite church. Weber. - Sister Susannah Bowman, beloved wife of Bro. Levi M. Weber, was born in Waterloo County, Ont., on Sept. 8, 1852 and died at the home of her son-in-law, Bro. Joseph Cressman, Kitchener, Ont., on Sept. 11, 1920. The cause of her death was heart trouble and dropsy. Her age was 68 y. 3 d. Shantz. Lydia U. Bowman, widow of the late Jacob E. Shantz, was born April 14, 1855; died at the home of her son-in-law, Anson Hallman, Preston, Ont., Jan. 3, 1929; aged 73 y. 8 m. 20 d. Her husband died Mar. 31, 1922. She is survived by 2 sons, 1 daughter, 14 grandchildren; also 3 brothers and 1 sister ( Benj. Bowman, Kitchener; Joseph, New Hamburg; Allan, New Dundee; and Mrs. Jacob Hallman, Detroit, Mich.). She was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for fifty years. She was stricken with a paralytic stroke on Oct. 10, 1925, from which she never fully recovered. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Bro. Biehn. - Mary U. Bowman, beloved wife of Aaron S. Biehn, near Guernsey, Sask., passed away on Sept. 25, 1924; aged 61 y. 1 m. She was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Aug. 26, 1863. On Oct. 24, 1882, she was married to Bro. Biehn. This union was blessed with 5 sons and 1 daughter. In the year 1905 they moved to Saskatchewan, where they resided till her demise. Five weeks before she died she was found to have a cancer of the stomach, and with much suffering yet with Christian fortitude she calmly awaited her end. Her sick chamber was a scene of inspiration to those privileged to visit with her, as she was rejoicing in the prospect of her coming glory. Valuable parting admonitions were given to her children. The services at the house were conducted by I. S. Rosenberger, and at the Sharon Mennonite Church by Henry Bartel in German and E. S. Hallman in English. Text, I Cor. 15: 51,52. The remains were laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Cressman.-Cyrus Cressman was born June 13, 1845; died at the home of his son, Isaiah, near Kitchener, Ont., on Feb. 9, 1928; aged 82 y. 7 m. 27 d. On Dec. 24, 1871, he was married to Mary Horst, who predeceased him 19 years. To this union were born 7 sons and 4 daughters, 2 sons, David and Cyrus, having preceded him in death. There remain to mourn his departure 5 sons (Isaiah, of Kitchener; Noah, Levi, and John of Breslau; Allan of Alberta), 4 daughters, (Mrs. Enoch Bauman, Elmira; Mrs. Lloyd Shantz, Maggie of Alberta; Mrs. Jacob Cressman, of Breslau), and one sister, Mrs. Mary Clemens, Breslau. Before his marriage he united with the Mennonite Church in which communion he spent his closing years. He left a testimony of peace with God, and a desire to depart this life and be with Him. Funeral services were held on Feb. 13 at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, with the brethren C.F. Derstine and Oscar Burkholder in charge of the services. Text, II Kings 20: 1. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Clemens. - Mary Cressman Clemens was born Feb. 20, 1847; died Jan. 6, 1929; aged 81 y. 10 m. 19 d. In 1866 she was married to Christian Clemens who predeceased her 26 years ago. They had one daughter, Hannah, who died about 4 years ago, since which time Sister Clemens had her home with her nephew, Bro. and Sister Noah Cressman of Breslau. Sister Clemens was stricken with blindness for a number of years and expressed her desire to depart and be with Jesus. The death took place on Nov. 7th of Mr. Benjamin Groff at the age of 58 years. The deceased who had been in failing health for several weeks left a short time ago to visit his brother, Mr. Andrew Groff, near Philipsburg, where he passed away.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon last form the family residence on Wilmot Street to Trinity Methodist Church and then to Riverside Cemetery - Rev. Mr. Wilson officiated. A widow and three children survive.

GROFF - Moses Groff was born Sept. 12, 1851; died near New Hamburg, Ontario, on Aug. 7, 1927; ages 75 y., 10 m., 7 d. On Nov. 11, 1880, he was married to Magdalena Eshelman who precede him five years. This union was blessed with three children (Emma, Sylvia, and Hattie), one who preceded him in death 16 years). Three brothers also survive (Abram, Aaron, and Ezra). In 1893 he united with the Mennonite Church, where he served his Lord faithfully until He took him. As a member of the Biehn congregation his place indeed is vacant. When health permitted he was seldom absent from the service. We shall ever remember him as an appreciative, attentive listener who loved to do his Master's will. During the last period of illness he often expressed a union blessed with three children; one desire to worship with God's people and was always appreciative of seasons of worship in the home. He bore his recent affliction and suffering with Christian fortitude, but longed to go and be with the Lord. In his death the home shall miss him as a loving, helpful father and the Church a faithful, active member. On Aug. 9 the funeral services were held from his late home near New Hamburg to the Biehn church and adjoining cemetery for interment. Services in charge of the brethren, Osias Cressman, Curtis C. AMONG THE FARMERS.

We called on Mr. Andrew Groff recently and found his splendid new barns 78x59, filled with grain; in fact, he has had to thrash twice and each time his large granaries were filled and he has still a lot to thrash. His short horn bull is a dandy and a great convenience to the people in town who own cows, he has also a fine lot of Berkshire pigs, the barns are a model of their kind and were erected by that popular barn builder Herman Hertel of Centreville. A new driving shed and implement building 42x30 has also been erected in which all the rigs and implements are kept, a model hennery is attached to this building where a fine lot of poultry was shown us.

Heart Attack Is Fatal"

Abraham B. Groff, who was living with his wife at the home of Mrs. Hedden, died suddenly Thursday following a heart attack. He was born at Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and was aged 75 years 2 months and 16 days. He came to this country in 1889 and to Minnesota about nine years ago. He had lived at Elk River for the past seven years. He is survived by his wife and several adult children. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the home, conducted by Rev. Richardson, and the burial was at Orono cemetery.

Bowman.-Benjamin Bowman was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Jan. 15, 1858; died at his home near New Hamburg, Ont., Sept. 7, 1936, after an illness of seven and a-half months; aged 78 y. 8 m. 23 d. Nearly 53 years ago he was married to Hannah Shantz. This union was blessed with 5 children, who with their mother survive him. This was the first time their home was visited by the messenger of death. The children are Weston of Toronto, Aaron on the homestead, Tobias of Kitchener, Minerva (Mrs. Titus Rosenberger) of Sask., and Annie at home. He also leaves 14 grandchildren, 4 brothers, and many other relatives and friends. He was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years and was seldom absent from church services until he was physically unable to attend. He lived in Waterloo Co., all his life with the exception of eleven years, when he with his wife and family lived in Michigan. Before he passed away he left testimony that all was well and that be was ready to meet his Lord. Funeral services were held Sept. 10 at the home and the Geiger Mennonite Church with Bros. M. Hallman and M. H. Roth in charge. The body was laid in the adjoining cemetery, there to rest till He comes.

Dilman S. Bowman passed away at the home of his son, Leslie Bowman, 81 Krug Street, early today after a short illness. Mr Bowman was 79 years of age. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Bowman he was born in Wilmot Township, Oct. 23, 1862. He was a member of Bethany Mennonite Church. Mr. Bowman was married May 27, 1883, at Doon to Catherine Baer who survives him with four sons, Leslie, Harvey, and Myron of Kitchener and Vernon of Toronto, one daughter, Mrs. T. H. Cochrane, Sunnyside, and three brothers, Levi Bowman of Kossuth, Tobias of Nut Mountain, Sask., and Enos, also in Saskatchewan. Seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at Bethany Mennonite Church at 2: 14. Interment will take place in Hagey Cemetery, Preston. Rev. C. N. Good, pastor, will officiate. The remains will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.

Moss. --- Matilda, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel S. Bowman, was born Oct. 29, 1868; passed away April 5, 1950; aged 81 y. 5 m. 6 d. She was born in the home near Kitchener, Ont., where she died. She was baptized in 1896 and was a member of the Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church, Kitchener. On Feb. 20, 1895, she was united in marriage to John K. Moss. Surviving are 3 sons (Clayton and Irvin, of Centerville; and Milton, of Kitchener), 2 daughters (Verna-Mrs. Emerson Burkhart, of Centerville; and Gertrude-Mrs. Floyd Culp, Strasburg, Ont.), 10 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by 2 brothers (Simon and Tillman). Her husband followed her in death April 22. Relatives and friends gathered for the memorial service on April 8.

BOWMAN. - Tilman E. Bowman was born June 19, 1871; died at the High River hospital March 29, 1941, after a prolonged illness of a number of years. Bro. Bowman accepted Christ as his Saviour at the age of 23, united with the Mennonite Church to which he remained faithful until death. He was interested in the work of the Church, for a number of years holding the office of district mission board member in the Alberta-Saskatchewan Conference district. In 1894 he was married to Velina Weber of Kitchener, Ont. To this union were born 2 sons (Gordon and Delton) and 1 daughter (Nellie - Mrs. Lloyd Moyer), Gordon having preceded him in 1926. He leaves his bereaved wife, Delton and Nellie of Aldershyde, 1 sister (Mrs. J. K. Moss of Kitchener) and a number of relatives and friends. Funeral April 1 in the home conducted by Isaac Miller (Text, Psa. 90: 12), and in the church by Bro. O. O. Hershberger and Bro. Isaac Miller. Text, II Cor. 5: 1. Interment in the adjoining cemetery

Snyder. - Martin B. Snyder was born May 22, 1849; died at his home in Waterloo, Ont., Sept. 29, 1916; aged 67 y. 4 m. 7 d. In 1870 he was united in matrimony with Mary Shantz, to which union were born 9 children, 5 sons and 4 daughters, of whom one daughter preceded him in infancy. Bro. Snyder was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church at Waterloo, and will be greatly missed in the church, as well as in the home and community, but we trust our loss may be his gain and need not mourn as others that have no hope. Funeral services conducted by Bro. Noah Stauffer and Jonas Snider from Rev. 20: 6, on Oct. 3, at the Waterloo Church and the remains were buried at the David Eby Cemetery.

Snyder.- Franklin B., son of Christian and Barbara (Bauman) Snyder, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Jan. 10, 1856; died May 17, 1937, at the home of his son Ira after an illness of seven weeks; aged 81 y. 4 m. 7 d. He was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years and attended services whenever health permitted. He was united in marriage to Magdalene Brubaker who survives. He is also survived by the following children: Ira of near Hawksville, Ont.; Barbara (Mrs. Simeon Martin) of Heidelburg, Ont.; Israel and Amos of Columbiana, Ohio; David of near Waterloo, Ont.; John of Baden, Ont.; Elias of Kitchener, Out. Funeral services were held on May 19 at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, conducted by Bros. Abram Bearinger, Jonas Snider, and Roy Koch.

Gingrich.-Lovina Snyder was born Feb. 8, 1865; died July 18, 1939; aged 74 y. 5 m. 10 d. On Jan. 3, 1888, she was married to Israel B. Gingrich who predeceased her two years ago. To this union were born 8 children. Those who survive are Manasseh of Waterloo, Freeman and Leah (Mrs. Addison Snider) of Elmira, Mrs. Amos Gingrich, Mrs. David B. Snyder of Waterloo. Two sons (Simon and Allan) and 1 daughter (Mrs. Menno Eby) predeceased her. One sister (Mrs. Isaac Hilborn, Kitchener), and 15 grandchildren also survive. She was a lifelong resident of Waterloo Twp., and early united with the Mennonite Church to which she remained faithful to the end. About two months ago she was stricken with a heart attack from which she never recovered. Funeral services were conducted at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church in charge of Brethren Roy S. Koch and Jonas Snider.

Mrs. Israel B. Gingrich

A lifelong resident of Waterloo township, Mrs. Israel B. Gingrich, 74, died early on Tuesday after an illness of two months, at her home, R.R. 1, Waterloo. Deceased, who was born Feb. 8, 1865, is survived by two sons, Manasseh of Waterloo and Freeman of Elmira; three daughters, Mrs. Addison Snider of Elmira, Mrs. Amos Gingrich and Mrs. David B. Snyder, both of Waterloo, a sister, Mrs. Isaac Hilborn of Kitchener, and 15 grandchildren. Her husband died two years ago. Two sons, Alan and Simon, and a daughter, Mrs. Menno Eby, also predeceased her. Funeral services were held Thursday at her late residence with Rev. Roy Koch and Bishop Jonas Snider officiating. Services were held in St. Jacobs Mennonite church with burial in Martin's Mennonite cemetery.

Suicide
A gloom was cast over the community last Tuesday morning when the news was spread that Mr. Wendel S. Bauman, a prosperous farmer living between Elmira and St. Jacobs, had committed suicide by hanging. Mr. Bauman had been around as usual and was that morning engaged in farm work. He was found suspended in the barn, by his 16 year old son, who immediately cut the rope, but life had departed. No motive can be assigned excepting that, of late, Mr. Bauman had been despondent over the state of his health. He leaves a widow and three children, the oldest of whom is about 16 years of age.

Gingrich.--On June 22, 1905 at West Montrose, Woolwich of pneumonia, Judith, beloved wife of Noah Gingrich, aged 36 y, 11 m, 17 d. Just four weeks before their eldest daughter, Selina aged 11 years, died of hip disease and blood poison. Both funerals were conducted by J. Geach, pastor of the United Brethren church of which they were members and by A. B. Gingrich of Elmina. May God comfort and bless the bereaved husband and his two motherless children

The home of Mr. Noah Gingrich has recently been visited by repeated and severe affliction. A few weeks ago occurred the demise of his little daughter Selina, a child of more than ordinary promise, and last week the mother died of pneumonia just in the prime of life. The little boy was also very ill, but is now, we are pleased to hear, considered out of danger. Miss Musselman, a trained nurse and graduate of one of the Toronto hospitals, was in attendance and rendered most valuable service. But it seemed as if all wise and infinite love was drawing the mother's spirit to that bright eternal home where faith, hope and love are forever triumphant. Those hands, so swift and skilful in ministering to the needs of others, are now at rest; that mind, so faithful, true and wise in building up and caring for her peaceful home on earth, now joins the spirits of the elect in the wondrous home of many mansions. Her remains were interred in the U. B. cemetery here on Monday forenoon, when a large number of friends paid a last tribute of respect to her memory. Rev'ds Geach and Ibbot conducted the funeral service in English, and the Mennonite pastor, Mr. Gingrich, gave a very earnest address in German. Earth has many a revered place of rest, but none more sacred than a mother's grave.

5 April 1942: Jesse S. Bauman died at his residence, a short distance north of Myerstown this morning. The decease was eighty-nine years of age. He was the son of the late Eli and Rebecca (Snyder) Bauman and was born in Wallenstein, Canada. He was of the Mennonite faith, migrated to Iowa In 1887 and remained there until 1915 when he moved to Lebanon County. Mr. Bauman was a retired farmer. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Levi Brubaker and Mrs. Elias Gingrich, of Myerstown; two sons, Eli Bauman and Isaac Bauman, of Wallenstein, Canada; thirty-six grandchildren, and fifty-four great-grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. Moses Gingrich and Mrs. David Martin, of Elmira, Canada. Bauman.-Amos S. Bauman was born Oct. 19, 1854, in Waterloo Co., Ont., and died Jan. 2, 1911; aged 56 y. 2 m. 14 d. He was married to Lydia Martin, July 30, 1876. To this union were born 12 children, 2 of which preceded him to the spirit-world. In 1880 he was converted and soon after became a member of the Mennonite Church, and later he, with his family moved to northwestern Iowa. In 1902 he moved to Mayton, Alta., Canada, where he owned a large farm. He was industrious and prosperous and was well spoken of as a neighbor and will be much missed in the community. For some time previous he had been a sufferer with stomach and bowel trouble which was the ultimate cause of his death. The funeral took place on Jan. 5, where a large concourse of relatives and friends had gathered to pay a last tribute of respect to one whom they had learned to love. Services were conducted by N. B. Gingrich-Magdalena (Mollie) Bauman Gingrich was born in Waterloo Co.,. Ont,. Sept 18, 1856; died April 16, 1944; aged 87 y. 6 m. 29 d. She had been in failing health since January, gradually growing weaker until she passed away peacefully at the home of their daughter, Mrs. .Seranus Martin, Floradale. She was married Oct. 29, 1876 to Henry Shantz and moved to Marybourough Twp.,. where they lived until he died Aug 12, 1879. Two children were born to the union. On Oct 26, 1884 she was united in marriage to Moses Gingrich and moved to Peel Twp.,. where they resided until he died June 23, 1931. Eight children were born to the union. She continued to make her home with her son Eli on the old homestead until 2 1/2 years ago, when she made her home with her daughter. She leaves to mourn her departure 9 children; Hannah ( Mrs., Henry Brubacher) Elmire; Henry Cyrenius Shantz, Guernsey, Sask.; Rebekah ( Mrs. Ananias Martin) Peel Twp.; Blandina ( Mrs. Seranus Martin Floradale; Leah .( Mrs. Edwin Snyder) Waterloo Twp.; Ozias, Elmira; Amos, Waterloo Twp.; Eli on the old homestead. Also surviving are one sister ( Mrs. David Martin) 57 grandchildren, and 46 great grandchildren. One son, Urias, predeceased her 32 years ago. Funeral services were held April 19, at the North Woolwich Mennonite Church of which she was a member, in charge of Bishop Amsey Martin, assisted by Bro. George Brubacher.

Martin - Rebecca, daughter of Eli and Rebecca Bauman, was born in the Jerusalem section, Ontario, Canada, June 26, 1863; died at the home of her daughter Lucinda near Waterloo, Ont., June 20, 1938; aged 75 y. 24 d. Nov. 21, 1882, she was united in marriage to Simeon Martin who with 2 daughters (Lucinda, wife of Ephraim Shantz, near Waterloo, with whom she resided, and Louida, wife of Irvin Weber of Blair), and 3 sons (Nelson of East Palestine, Ohio; Angus of near Elmira, and Rufus of St. Jacobs), remain to mourn the loss of a devoted and loving mother; also 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. In early youth she gave her heart to the Lord and united with the Mennonite Church of which she was a faithful member to the end. Three sons (Amos, Alexander, and Eli), and a daughter (Hannah) preceded her in death. Funeral services were conducted at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church with Bros. Roy Koch and Oliver D. Snider in charge. Interment in Martin's Cemetery.

MARTIN. - Blandina Bauman was born Nov. 27, 1870; was married to Daniel E. Martin Oct. 20, 1896, with whom she lived a little over 33 years. During the last three years she was afflicted with cancer of the liver from which she died Nov. 1, 1929; aged 58 y. 11 m. 3 d. She leaves a sorrowing husband and three children (Jesse, minister at Waterloo, Ont.; Enoch, and Lucinda, at home). One daughter (Minerva) died in infancy. She united with the Mennonite Chruch in her youth, and lived a quiet, exemplary life to the end. Funeral services Nov. 3 at the Martins Church near St. Jacobs, Ont., conducted by Bros.
