District's Outstanding Cattleman, Jairus W. Maus Passes - A man who became almost a legend in his lifetime, as the head of the largest beef cattle operation in the East, Jairus W. Maus, RR 3, Ayr, died on Sunday in his 77th year. The late Mr. Maus was a passenger in a car driven by his grandson, James Maus, when he suffered a heart attack. For many years the name Maus has been synonymous with beef cattle production, and Fairview Farms Ltd., the Maus holdings, were among the largest suppliers of beef not only to Toronto markets but to Buffalo and other American markets, on occasion. He was born in South Dumfries, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John William Maus, and this locality became the subsequent headquarters for his cattle and farming operation. Besides having a keen business mind, Mr. Maus had a natural instinct in the selection and raising of cattle which many other cattlemen maintained was "more than could be learned." They often noted with admiration, almost bordering on awe, his ability to estimate the weight of a pen of cattle within a few pounds, or select Western stocker calves that grew into top grade cattle in the East. It was said that through his selections in the West there were more good beef cattle raised by district farmers in his generation than had seemed possible in previous years. In fact, in recent years the Fairview Farms brought East 400 or more carloads annually, according to the Canadian Cattlemen publication. In 1940 he had four farms in this area, and began his expansion program as his sons became old enough to assist. The holdings have continued to increase over the years, with some 2,300 acres in the Ayr district and a somewhat larger acreage in the Kincardine area bearing the familiar Fairview name. Of late Fairview was included sheep in its livestock program. The late Mr. Maus was an active and valued member of Knox United Church, serving as a member of the session and a former trustee. He was a strong supporter of various church projects over the years. His wife, the former Elizabeth Ann Baxter, died in 1957. An infant daughter, Frances Ann, died in 1930. Surviving are four sons, Dr. John H., Windsor; Richard Douglas, RR 3, Ayr; Donald S., Kincardine, and Hugh C., RR 3, Ayr; four daughters, Elizabeth M., Hamilton; Mrs. Ian (Agnes) Thomson, Colorado Springs, Col.; Mrs. Duncan (Jean) McGugan, Strathroy, and Mrs. A. W. (Margaret) Bond, Smithville; and three sisters, Janet, Laurie and Mrs. N.H. (Estelle) Bennett, all of Ayr. There are 27 grandchildren. Funeral service was held today (Wednesday) from Knox United Church conducted by Rev. D. E. Willis. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery.

Footnote: James Dickie Hall was born on February 27, 1916 in Coniston, Ontario (near Sudbury). He signed his four page Officer's Application and Record Sheet while living in Trail, British Columbia on October 2, 1939 and his Officer's Declaration Paper on November 2, 1939, stating that he was single, that he had no previous war service and that his occupation was that of Assayer. He was educated at Sudbury High School (1929-1932), Humberside Collegiate (1932-1933) and Pickering College (1933-1934), before attending McGill University in Montreal, Quebec (1934-1939), graduating with a B. Eng. in Mining Engineering and a M.Sc. in Geology, also playing inter-collegiate football for the Redmen. He was employed by various companies in the Sudbury area while attending McGill. He began his RCAF training at RCAF Station Uplands, in Ottawa in 1940 and was recognized by his peers and superiors as being a very hard working student while in training. In a Final Report dated November 19, 1943 from the RAF Staff College in regards to his 10th (War) Course, it was documented that Hall was "A cheerful officer with a strong character, a pleasant manner, and a sympathetic nature. He is very quiet and reserved but has a definite mind of his own. He shows imagination and initiative. His work shows throughness and sound judgment. He has been consistently sound and reliable, and is a hard worker. He is ready to accept responsiblity. Above average ablility. His written work is above average and is consistent, painstaking and accurate. Because of shyness he is much too reluctant to speak on formal occasions. Suitable for Air or Administrative staff duties in his acting rank. After gaining more confidence in a period of staff employment he would be suitable for Directing Staff duties at R.C.A.F. Staff College.", signed by the Air Vice-Marshal, Commandant, R.A.F. Staff College. He was recommended as a potential Squardon Commander, June 8, 1944. He was Squadron Leader of 402 Squadron in 1942, then Squadron Leader and Commanding Officer of Red Indians in 1943. It was folowed by a term at Staff College and in Sir Arthur Conningham's staff, shifting thereafter to combat on D-Day. He married Kathleen Louise Blaylock and she moved to England in 1942 to work at M.T.C. Headquarters, while he was serving in England. Hall had his allowance and assigned pay diverted to her, also fathering a daughter, Judith Ann, in 1943. On the night of June 16, 1944, three flights of six aircraft from No.144 Wing took off from B-3 Airfield, St. Croix-Sur-Mer, for a sweep into the Argentan area of Normandy. They left at 20.30, twelve of the aircraft being from No. 443 Hornet Squadron (Our Sting is Death), one of which was lead by S/L J.D. Hall, the other by S/L H.W. McLeod, acting independently. His Spitfire MK 397 met with flak from German forces on the ground, his aircraft last having been seen by accompanying planes flying into cloud at 3,000 feet over the Caen area of France. At this point, the Spitfires were engaged by the enemy in air combat over Sassy-Perrieres-Sur-Les-Pres, with up to 90 Fock Wulfs. The weather was bad, combined with the fact they were fighting it out against great odds. His aircraft was shot down and was found near the village of Perrieres near Monteaux, with the aircraft's numbers easily recognizable. Three pilots perished: S/L James Dickie Hall, F/L Hugh Russel and F/O L. Perez Gomez. A fourth pilot, F/L D.M. Walz, parachuted to safety. Walz described that there were "several burning German wrecks on the ground and later when he enquired among the people where he was hiding, they told him of one Spitfire wreck and four German wrecks", a testament to the Squadron's tenaciousness. Hall was Killed in Action at the age of 28 and was initially buried near the wreck, then, after a solemn ceremony on Sunday, June 18, was re-interred in the cemetery of Perrieres. After the liberation, the body was removed by the Allied authorities and laid to rest in the Bretteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery, France. In a personal letter addressed to his wife, Kathleen, dated June 20th, 1944, it was noted that "on the evening of 16th June, Jimmy was leading a flight in a patrol over the Allied beach-head.", that they had lost contact with his plane and that "we must assume that they are lost to us." The letter continues, "He came to my Squadron several months ago, and we became firm friends overnight. We in the Squadron admired him greatly, and his keenness to fight the Hun was an inspiration to us all. We shall sorely miss his helping hand in these trying times.", signed H.W. McLeod S/L DSQ DFC, Officer Commanding, No. 443 Squadron (RCAF).

HALL, Raymond M. (1893-1960) maintained an office in Galt, Ontario (now part of Cambridge) for nearly 45 years. Born in Blenheim Township, Oxford County, Ont. on 16 May 1893, he was educated in Plattsville, Ont. and in Stratford, then moved to Toronto to take architectural courses at the Toronto Technical School. In 1913-14 he trained under the talented Toronto architect Charles S. Cobb, then moved to Kitchener where he worked as assistant to Bernal Jones on several occasions over beginning in 1914 and through to 1930. In the meantime, he opened his own office in nearby Galt, Ont. in 1915, and sustained his career there with a variety of eclectic designs for large private residences and commercial buildings. He served with Canadian Expeditionary Forces during WWI, and was briefly in partnership with John Evans, a local Galt architect, in 1919. One of his largest commissions completed during his career was the refined modernist design for the Waterloo County Registry Office in Kitchener (1938), and now called The Registry Theatre.

In 1945 he prepared a stripped modernist design for a proposed Civic Centre in Galt, but the scheme was never built. The perspective drawing by Hall showing his scheme for the project now forms part of the Raymond Hall Collection at the Ontario Archives. Hall died in Galt on 13 November 1960 (obit Galt Reporter, 14 Nov. 1960; R.A.I.C. Journal, xxxviii, Jan. 1961, 57; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects). The Ontario Archives, now located at York University in Toronto, holds an extensive collection of original drawings by Hall covering the period from 1920 to 1955, and documenting more than 200 projects by Hall in Galt, and in southwestern Ontario....

Dr. Maus died on Nov. 1, 2008, at the age of 90, in Windsor, Ont. Dr. Maus graduated from the University of Toronto, specializing in radiation oncology, in 1942. After completing his medical degree, he used his skills to serve in World War II. Upon his return, he joined the Windsor Cancer Clinic in 1953 as the staff radiologist and surgeon. Ten years later, he was named the clinic director, a position he held for 20 years. During that time, the facility expanded significantly to accommodate the growing number of cancer patients in the region. Even after his retirement, his knowledge and expertise were still sought after. Dr. Maus was a former director of the Ontario Cancer Foundation Clinic (now the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre). He was involved in the local health care community even after he retired. His son Roger remembered him as a hard-working doctor, "tirelessly devoted" to his patients and their families. Dr. Maus and his wife, Shirley, who died in 1999, had 5 children (Roger, Elizabeth, Linda, Natalie, Peggy and Laurie). Dr. Maus was also a grandfather and a great-grandfather.

    Obituary for Elizabeth McIntyre Maus

Elizabeth Macintyre Maus passed peacefully on September 11 at The Wellington in Hamilton after a life of achievement, public service and support and dedication to a large family. She had previously resided at St Elizabeth Village in Hamilton for more than 30 years. She had her 98th birthday in July.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her four sisters, Agnes, Jean, Margaret and Frances and four brothers John, Douglas, Donald and Hugh. She was born at Fairview Farm in Brant county and attended elementary and secondary school in Paris before earning her diploma in Nursing at Toronto General Hospital, her Teaching certificate at the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Western Ontario. She was a passionate educator and mentor during her accomplished career with active care and teaching hospitals in Toronto, London, Kitchener Waterloo, Port Colborne, Galt and Hamilton. She rose to become the Director of the Hamilton and District School of Nursing and as administrative head she oversaw the consolidation of regional schools into the current Mohawk College Department of Nursing. She was a faithful involved member of the congregation at Chedoke Presbyterian Church.

And even as she achieved professional success she continued to put family first and will always be remembered for her loving, strong, support as an inspiration and example to many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was a consummate adventurer who spent every summer travelling the globe, from China in the 1950s to rugged tenting treks with her nieces in Canada's far north well into her senior years.

Aunt Liz continued to learn and to teach during her entire long life and her example will continue to inspire for years to come.

A celebration of Elizabeth's life will take place at Knox United Church, 92 Northumberland St., Ayr, on Saturday September 30, at 11 a.m. reception and interment at Ayr Cemetery to follow.
