"Joseph Stauffer Passes at Galt - Prominent Industrialist Was Self-Made Man: Suffered Two Strokes

(Galt) Joseph Stauffer, prominent industrialist and descendant of a pioneer Waterloo county family, died this morning at his residence here. He was in his 83rd year and was quite active until Sunday evening when he suffered a slight stroke followed by a more severe one Monday morning from which he failed to rally.

He was president of Newlands and Company, Limited, vice-pres. of Stauffer Dobbie Ltd., vice-pres. of the Galt Art Metal Company and a director of the Waterloo Fire Insurance Company. He was born near the village of Doon, his parents natives of Waterloo county. His grandparents originally from Switzerland, came to Waterloo county from Pennsylvania in 1802.

Joseph Stauffer was a self-made man. His father died when he was but 11 months old. He came to Galt as a youth and went into the livery business.

In 1891 he joined the Newlands firm as a traveller and seven years later became a partner in the firm in which he was active until his death.

He was a staunch Conservative and was noted as an after dinner speaker and story teller. He was greatly interested in the work of the Waterloo County Historical Society and contributed much valued early history of the county. He is survived by three sons and one daughter, Claude and Joseph of Toronto, Clive of Galt, and Mrs. Alex Logan of Vancouver."

"Joseph Stauffer, the subject of this sketch was born near Doon in 1852 and died in Galt on Feb. 18th, 1936, in his 84th year.

Joseph Stauffer was the son of Joseph Stauffer, Sr. and Nancy Bowman. His ancestor left Switzerland for Germany and thence migrated to the United States, settling in Pa. about 1738. In 1802 his pioneer forefather located on a farm near Doon. The father died when Joseph was but eleven months old. The mother later moved to Blair and from there to Sheffield, where Joseph grew to manhood.

Joseph Stauffer's first business venture was a partnership with the late John Sipes of Galt where they conducted a livery business for 12 years.

In 1891 Mr. Stauffer joined the firm of Newlands and Company Limited as salesman. His success on the road was such that he was admitted to membership in this firm and later became president of the company, which position he held until his death.

In 1903 Mr. Stauffer and the late Andrew Newland organized another textile plant known as the Galt Robe Company, Limited, which firm later became the Stauffer-Dobbie Company, Limited.

Mr. Stauffer was also Vice-President of the Galt Art Metal Company, director of the Waterloo Fire Insurance Company, local Vice-President of the Waterloo Historical Society and for a number of years a member of the Galt City Council.

Mr. Stauffer in spite of having started at the bottom of the ladder nevertheless succeeded in each of his various enterprises against all obstacles, and achieved noteworthy objectives in the wide field of his activities. These were not by any means confined to commercial or financial interests only but included the broader realm of success fulliving.

Mr. Stauffer was a man beloved of his family. He had a keen, active and generous interest in the community in which he lived. His political sagacity was outstanding and his patriotism with respect to Canadian and British institutions was sincere and worthy of emulation.

In his business undertakings, so widely diversified, his successes wer enot only gratifying from the standpoint of personal prowess but also in the enriched regard and respect which he won from those associated with him and from those with whom his business was conducted.

Mr. Stauffer's partner in life was the late Lena Clemens, daughter of Oliver Clemens of Blair, also deceased. Mr. Stauffer's family comprised three sons and one daughter.

Few descendants of our early settlers took as much interest in their ancestral family history as did Mr. Stauffer, who, after visiting Pennsylvania to learn what he could of the family tree, spent severa lmonths in Switzerland in 1925 and visited the home of his forebears. He succeeded in tracing the history of the Stauffer family back for a period of eleven hundred years. Incidentally he found three representatives ofthe family had in their time held responsible positions in the government after Switzerland became a republic.

Among the traditions of the Stauffer family in America is the record of the coming of the first Stauffers from Muckenhauserhof, Wurtemberg, Germany, whither members of the family had fled during earlier years to escape the persecution of non-conformists in Switzerland.

While in Germany, Maritn Stauffer had determined to emigrate and settle in America but a fatal illness overtook him before his plans could be carried out. Upon his death bed he urged his young sons to take their mother to America with them as soon as possible after his demise. This was done but the difficulties of a journey of several hundred miles were increased by the fact that the mother was crippled. Due to the small resources of the family, the sons were obliged to improvise a wheel chair or hand wagon in which they personally conveyed their mother several hundred miles from this far inland part of Germany to the seaport fromwhich they secured passage to Pennsylvania." Following graduation from high school he enrolled at Queen's University to study engineering. Mr. Stauffer's studies were interrupted by the First World War when he went overseas to serve with the Royal Naval Air Service. When the war ended, he returned to his studies and graduated, in 1920, as a metallurgist. Following graduation from Queen's University, Mr. Stauffer travelled to London, England for graduate courses in fuel technology at the Imperial College of Science. He then ventured into fuel technology, telephone, textile, stamping and financial interests, becoming an executive in all these fields, all the while accumulating a significant fortune which was used to establish the Joseph's. Stauffer Foundation. A quiet philanthropist, Mr. Stauffer contributed substantially to his alma mater and supported the Queen's University Endowment Fund and spear headed the Charles Poynton Memorial Award. He is reported to have sent cheques, anonymously at Christmas, to supplement the pensions of widows of the engineering professors who had taught him in his student days at Queen's University. Mr. Stauffer was a director of Stauffer-Dobbie Ltd., of Newlands & Co. and of Galt Metal Industries and was a member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute. He died in Toronto on June 16, 1978 and is buried in the Mausoleum in Mount View Cemetery."

    Notes:

    Justice Carlton William Clement
    (1907-1999)

Practicing law was a Clement family tradition, and even though Justice Carlton Clement's father was a businessman, Justice Carlton Clement was well supported in his pursuit of a career in law, a career in which he committed himself to practicing for over 60 years.

Justice Carlton William Clement was born in Waterloo, Ontario in 1907. The family moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1913 and Justice Clement attended St. John's College, and later enrolled at the University of Manitoba. He spent two years enrolled in sciences until the family moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1925. He then enrolled at the University of Alberta, changing his discipline to arts. He received his law degree in 1928 and a bachelor of laws in 1931.

Almost immediately after spending years as a student, Justice Clement was admitted to the Alberta bar on April 12, 1932. At this time, in the heart of the depression, Justice Clement went to Peace River and practiced law for two years. The humble beginnings of trading law services for food and other necessities shaped Justice Clement's practice.

Justice Clement arrived back in Edmonton and became a senior partner at the firm of Clement, Parlee, Irving, Mustard and Rodney. In 1942, Justice Clement also lectured insurance law at the University of Alberta for three consecutive years. In addition to his teaching responsibilities during 1942, he was also appointed to King's Counsel and in 1970, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Alberta.

By 1970, Justice Clement had been practicing law for 38 years. In 1959, he served as president of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and in 1968 he served as president of the Alberta Law Society.

He was also president of the Edmonton bar Association, director of the Alberta Chamber of Mines, director of the Bohemian Maid Brewing Company, and he served on the advisory board of the National Trust. Justice Clement was also instrumental in the selection of Canada's first ombudsman.

Justice Carlton William Clement retired from the Court of Appeal in 1982 but continued to serve as a deputy judge with the Federal Court of Appeals. He lectured again at the University of Alberta in 1983 for three consecutive years when he was appointed as lecturer in professional responsibility. He officially retired from the practiced of law on May 31, 1994. He passed away on December 27, 1999.

    Retiring judge decries 'deteriorating values'

    By DOUG SWANSON

Justice Carlton Clement leaned back in his leather chair, puffed on his slender cigar and reflected on his 12 years as a member of Alberta's highest court.

"There are many things I'm leaving behind that are pleasant and interesting," said the most recent retiree from the Alberta Court of Appeal.

"My associates are a great group of lawyers."

Justice Clement, who turned 75 on Jan. 6, has hung up his robes and will now be able to spend more time at his cabin at Kapasiwin Beach.

Justice Clement launched his distinguished legal career in 1932 when he was admitted to the Alberta bar.

"Those were very difficult days during the Depression. Some lawyers were even on the bread line."

Justice Clement survived and later joined Parlee and Company, a law firm for which he would eventually become senior partner.

Between his bar admission and his appointment to the then appellate division of the Alberta Supreme Court in 1970, Justice Clement was a busy man.

He served as president of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, was a director of the Alberta Chamber of Mines and a director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

Justice Clement served on the advisory board of National Trust and was a director of Bohemian Maid Brewing Co. Ltd.

During his 38-year career as a practising lawyer, Justice Clement was elected president of the Alberta Law Society and the Edmonton Bar Association. He was appointed a King's Counsel in 1942.

He also headed a provincial study into boards and tribunals which resulted in the creation of an ombudsman for Alberta.

Justice Clement said the primary function of the ombuds- man was to investigate areas of complaint where "the court has no jurisdiction and try to see that justice is done."

His appointment directly to the appeal court, bypassing the trial division, didn't hamper his effectiveness.

"I'd been through enough trials as a barrister so as not to feel any lack of experience in that regard."

Justice Clement admits that at the time, if given a choice, he would have selected the trial division but in retrospect is glad he served on the appeal court.

"It made a very interesting and stimulating change from the actual practice of law." he said.

Increasingly complex laws and Alberta's rising crime rate have put added pressure on the appeal court.
"The volume of work in the court of appeal is so great we need all the help we can get."

Justice Clement says deteriorating values in society are contributing to a higher crime rate.

"If young people don't develop a decent standard of morality, it's going to be difficult."

Chief Justice William McGil- livray of the Alberta Court of Appeal says Justice Clement will be sorely missed.

"He was a most powerful, co- operative judge," says Justice McGillivray.

"He had a lovely turn of phrase. We all will miss him, not only as a judge but a friend.
