LEIS.-Joseph Leis of near Wellesley, Waterloo Co., Ont., was born in Bavaria on the 9th of February 1817 and died on the 6th of July 1896, aged 79 years, 4 months and 27 days. He came to this country in his youth. He was married to Catherine Kennel. They lived in matrimony 52 years, 3 months and 17 days. He leaves his sorrowing widow, nine sons and four daughters and forty-three grandchildren. He lived in the house which he erected in the primeval forests of "Upper Canada" fifty-two years ago and his was the first death that occurred in the house. He was a faithful member of the Old Amish branch of the church, and died of paralysis and the infirmities of old age. A large concourse of friends followed his remains to the Wellesley graveyard on the 9th. Funeral services by Christian Gascho, Christian Zehr and John Gascho.

Mrs. Christian Lichty

Mrs. Christian J. Lichty, a lifelong and well known resident of Wellesley village passed away last Thursday, March 24th, after an illness of nine months, at the age of 74 years. She was a valued and faithful adherent of the Amish-Mennonite Church. Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Wagler and Miss Fanny Licty. Also five brothers, Joseph, Daniel, Jacob, Solomon and Menno Leis, all of Wellesley, and one sister, Mrs. Nicholas S. Roth, of New Hamburg.

The funeral was held on Monday forenoon from her late home to Amish-Mennonite Church and Cemetery on the Third Line of Wellesley Township.

WELLESLEY.-A native of Wellesley township, Menno Leis, 83, township Menno Leis died here Tuesday night at the home of his son-in-law, Solomon Gerber. He had been ill three weeks. He attended Maple View Mennonite Church, Third Line of Wellesley. His wife predeceased him some years ago.

Surviving is one son, Milton, of Kitchener, one daughter, Mrs. Solomon Gerber, Wellesley, and a brother, Solomon, of Baden. He was predeceased by one son, three daughters, eight brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, with Rev. Samuel Schultz officiating.

WELLESLEY.\emdash Ill for the past three years, Daniel K. Leis, 76, died at his home here Thursday. Deceased was born in Wellesley township in 1803. He was a member of the third line Maple View Amish Mennonite church. Surviving are his wife, four sons, Christian of Tavistock, Samuel and Peter of Kingwood, Ezra of Wellesley, one daughter, Mrs. Aaron Jantzi of Wellesley, three brothers, Menno of Wilmot, Jacob of Wellesley and Solomon of Baden, 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was held on Sunday.

Leis.-Joseph L., son of the late Christian and Catherine (Lichty) Leis, was born near Wellesley, Ont., March 21, 1876; passed away at his home, Kitchener, Ont., April 8, 1949; aged 73 y. 17 d. Death followed an eight-week illness resulting from a stroke. In his youth he united with the Amish Mennonite Church at Wellesley, Ont. In 1903 he was married to Mary Albrecht, after which he left the farm and engaged in carpenter work. In 1931 he moved with his family to Kitchener. The following year he united with the First Mennonite Church. Surviving are his wife and 8 daughters (Clara-Mrs. Enos Steinman, Baden, Ont.; Kate-Mrs. Aaron Zehr, Wellesley, Ont.; Marion-Mrs. Arthur Freund, Kitchener, Ont.; Alma-Mrs. William Paddon, Gulph, Ont.; Alice-Mrs. John Henry, Florence-Mrs. Walter Schrock, Verna-Mrs. John Wynosky, and Wilma-Mrs. Clifford Schiedel, all of Kitchener, Ont.), 27 grandchildren, 3 brothers (Simon, Gadshill, Ont.; David and Amos, Wellesley, Ont.) and 2 sisters (Mrs. Sarah Wahl, Kitchener, Ont.; and Mrs. Daniel Gerber, Crosshill, Ont.). Two young children (Clarence and Edna) preceded him in death. He remained in fellowship with the First Mennonite Church, having expressed peace with God during his last illness and giving evidence of being ready to meet his Creator and Redeemer. Funeral services were held April 11 at the First Mennonite Church, with burial in the adjoining cemetery, in charge of Oscar Burkholder assisted by Merle Shantz.

Interment will follow in First Mennonite cemetery, Kitchener.

WELLESLEY. July 23 - Rudolph Leis, 39, died last night at his home in Wellesley after an illness of three weeks. Born in 1878 in Wellesley Townshiph, he was a retired farmer. His parents were the late Joseph Leis and Catherine Roth of Wellesley. His wife, the former Elizabeth Bast, predeceased him in 1942. He was a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church, 3rd line, Wellesley. Surviving ars his stepmother, Mrs. Magdeline Leis, Wellesley; three sons, William, Kitchener and Joseph and Waldemar, Wellesley; two daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Leah) Shultz, North Easthope and Mrs. Elmer (Edna)Brenneman, Wellesley; five brothers, John, New Hamburg, Soloman and Joseph R., Wellesley, Sidney Linwood and Elmer, London; five sisters, Mrs. Joseph Kropf, Misses Fannie, Mattie and Lydia, and Mrs. William Jantzi, all of Wellesley; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Wellesley - Mrs. Joseph Kropf, 80, who died at her home here Saturday, was buried today in Maple View Cemetery after a memorial service at Maple View Amish Mennonite Church. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Leis, she was born Oct. 9, 1882, in Wellesley Township. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two step-sons, Alvin of Waterloo, and William of Kitchener; a step-daughter, Mrs. Herman (Adela) Kipfer of Millbank; five brothers, Solomon of New Hamburg, Joseph of Kitchener, John of New Hamburg, Sidney of Linwood and Elmer of London, Ont.; and four sisters, Mattie, Fannie and Lydia, all of Wellesley; Mrs. William (Edith) Jantzi of Wellesley. One sister and one brother predeceased her.

WELLESLEY Mrs. Solomon Gerber, 69, the former Laura Leis, died yesterday at her home in Wellesley, after a long illness.

Born Oct 9, 1886. she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Menno Leis. She was a member of Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church
Her husband survives along with five sons, Elmer and Moses. both of Wilmot Township: Amos, Soloman and Ohmer, all of Wellesley Township: and five daughters. Mrs. Nickolas (Emma) Schmidt of Millbank. Mrs. David (Esther) Schwartz of Crosshill. Mrs. Elras Laura Jantz), Mrs. Ralph. (Sarah) Leis and Mrs. Al- vin (Elmina) Jantzi, all of Wellesley Township. There are 41 grandchildren and one great- grandchild. One son and one daughter predeceased her.

Died in Hospital After Near Drowning When Car Goes Into Shallow Water

Milton Lies, 52, of Kitchener, died unexpectedly in K-W Hospital on Sunday evening after being saved from drowning earlier in the afternoon. He was driving into Kitchener from the south-west when his car struck the Mill St. bridge near the city limits and plummeted into the creek. Mr. Leis was pinned underneath in about 1 feet of water. Golfers from the Rockway golf course saw the accident and rushed to his assistance. They pulled him from his perilous position and he seemed to be only slightly injured. The deceased was a former resident of New Hamburg, and was employed in the Hahn Brass Co. factory. He was a son-in-law of Mrs. Catharine Litwiller of this town. Surviving are his wife, three sons, Milton, Wallace and Robert, all of Kitchener; four daughters, Mrs. Carl (Mildred) Kaminska of Centreville; Mrs. William (Katharine) Musclow of Galt; Mrs. Munro (Marie) Kerr and Mrs. Matthew (Laura) Riem, both of Kitchener; a sister, Mrs. Solomon Gerber, Wellesley, and nine grandchildren. A son, Wilfred, was killed in action in France in the Second World War. A sister, Nancy, and a brother, Mose, also predeceased him. A private funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. H. A. Kellerman, pastor of Calvary Memorial Church, officiating. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener.

She was the former Annie Nancy Gingerich, born in Wellesley, 78 years ago, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Gingerich, a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church.

Dear mother of Walter of Wellesley; survived by four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Jonathan, July 29, 1972; also by three brothers and two sisters.

Friends called at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, Wellesley. At noon Wednesday, November 10, the remains were removed to the Maple View Mennonite Church for the service at 2:30. Rev. Alvin Leis and Rev. Jacob Roese officiated. Interment in the church cemetery.

Miss Elizabeth Gingerich of 86 Queen St., Wellesley, died last Saturday at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital. She was 63.

Born in Wellesley, Nov. 9, 1905, Miss Gingerich was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian R. Gingerich.

She was a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church at Wellesley and was a life-long resident there.

Surviving are one brother, Joseph Gingerich of Kitchener and one sister, Mrs. Jonathan (Nancy) Kantzi of Wellesley.

Two brothers and a sister predeceased her.

Funeral services were held at the Maple View Mennonite Church on Tuesday.

Futher Brothers Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Leis, Samuel E., son of Daniel and Magdalene (Erb) Leis, was born in Wellesley Twp., Ont., Oct. 30, 1891; died at his home near Kingwood, Jan. 23, 1963; aged 71 y. 2 m. 24 d. On Feb. 1, 1917, he was married to Elizabeth Schultz, who survives. Also surviving are one son (Clarence), 4 grandchildren, 3 brothers and one sister (Christian, Peter, Ezra and Sarah-Mrs. Aaron W. Jantzi). On June 5, 1938, he was ordained as minister at Maple View A.M. Church, and served at Maple View and also at Crosshill. He also served on the Winter Bible School Board of the Ontario A.M. Conference, 1941-54, and took an active part in the teaching program of the summer Bible school. He served as a member of the executive com-mittee and was treasurer of the Ontario A.M. Conference for many years. Funeral services were held at the Maple View Church, Jan. 26, in charge of Christ Streicher, Elmer Swartzentruber, and Alvin Leis.

Menno L. Roth, 56, of Bright died at his home Saturday after a lengthy illness. Born in Wellesley, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas S. Roth. Mr. Roth was proprietor of the Bright butcher store for 15 years. He was a member of the Steinman Amish Mennonite Church Baden.

Surviving are his widow, the former Lucinda Erb, whom he married in 1922 in Baden; one son, Edgar of Bright, three daughters, Doris of Kitchener and Eileen and Betty of Bright; four brothers, Solomon, John and Peter of New Hamburg [also Edward Roth and Miss Veronica]. One son, Orville, died in infancy.

The body is resting at his home where the funeral will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. followed by a service at the Steinman Church at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Steinman Amish Mennonite Cemetery with Rev. Moses O. Jantzi officiating.

SCHWARTZENTRUBER, Mary\emdash Passed away, Thursday, March 4, 1993, at Bonnie Brae Health Care Centre, Tavistock.
She was born in Crosshill 91 years ago, a daughter of the late Joseph Gascho and the former Catherine Leis. She was also predeceased by her husband, William.
She is survived by one son, Harold and his wife Freida of RR 1, Stratford; by two daughters, Laura (Mrs. Michael Gerber) of Wellesley and Mary Ellen (Mrs. Amos Gerber) of Shakespeare; by 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Irvin and his wife Marian.
The late Mrs. Schwartzentruber will be resting at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, 40 Henry St., Wellesley, where the family will receive friends this evening (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. At noon on Sunday, removal will be made to Mapleview Mennonite Church, RR 2, Wellesley, for the funeral service at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Victor Dorscht will officiate. Burial in the church cemetery.
An expression of sympathy may be made to the Arthritis Society or the Missions.

Beloved wife of the late Elmer Lebold who predeceased her August 27, 1964. LEIS, Rev. Alvin D. - With sadness we, the family, announce the passing of Rev. Alvin Leis, on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1992, at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener.

Alvin resided on his farm at RR 1, Wellesley. Born in Wellesley Township 78 years ago, he was a son of the late John B. Leis and the late Barbara Gascho and step-son of the late Sarah Albrecht.

Mr. and Mrs. Leis had farmed in Wellesley Township most of their lives. The Rev. Leis was ordained a Deacon April 24. 1960. He was also ordained a Minister at the Mapleview Mennonite Congregation, December 11, 1966, serving as Pastor until 1985. He was also the former treasurer of the Western Ontario Mennonite Conference.

Beloved husband of Idella Kathleen (Kropf) Leis, whom he married June 8, 1935. Dear father of Albert and his wife Irene Leis of Poole, Shirley and her husband Howard Roth of Tavistock. Dear brother of Ervin Leis of Wellesley, Katie (Mrs. Elmer Lebold) of New Hamburg, Edna (Mrs. John Roth) of New Hamburg; brother-in-law of Viola Leis of Baden and Beatrice Leis of Wellesley. Lovingly remembered by seven grandchildren, Philip, Timothy, Deborah, Wanda Roth, Charlotte, Jennifer, Jeffrey Leis and also by six great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Allan, Norman, Abner and John and by seven sisters, Salome, Barbara, Sarah, Emma, Nancy, Mary and Alma and also by one grandson, Myron Roth.

She was a member of the Hampstead United Church; a life member of the UCW of the church; a member of the Hampstead WI.

Surviving are her husband; one son, Kenneth, RR 1 Gadshill; three daughters, Mrs. Mervin (Beatrice) Stroh, Wellesley; Mrs. Donald (Dorothy) Murray, Prince George, B.C.; Mrs. Douglas (Kathaleen) Marquette, RR 1 Stratford; two brothers, Emanuel and Clayton both of Milverton; two sisters, Mrs. Emanuel (Clara) Kennell, and Mrs. Herbert (Lavina) Kraft, both of Waterloo; nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held oni Sunday at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, Wellesley.

Burial was in Hampstead cemetery.

Mrs. Elmer Schultz, 61, of R.R. 1, Milverton, died Wednesday evening, October 6, at K.-W. Hospital, after a lengthy illness.

She was the former Leah Leis, born in Wilmot Township [birth record says Wellesley] October 13, 1903, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Leis. She was a member of the Poole Mennonite Church and the women's association of that church.

She is survived by her husband, to whom she was married in Wellesley on June 16, 1926; two sons, Stanley, of Milverton, and Allan W., of R.R. 1, Milverton; two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Hilara) Ropp, of Kitchener, and Mrs. Clayton (Edna) Roes, of Stratford; three brothers, William and Joseph, of Kitchener, and Walter, of Wellesley; one sister, Mrs. Edna Brenneman, of Millbank and 12 grandchildren.

The body rested at the Futher Bros. funeral home, Wellesley, until 1:00 p.m. Sunday, when removal was made to Poole Mennonite Church for the service. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Herbert Schultz, of Poole, officiated.

BARTMAN, Catherine Magdelena Leis - Our dear Mother passed away on July 18, 2007 at Nithview Home, New Hamburg. Catherine was born in Wellesley, Ontario on June 16, 1929 and was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Wagler) Leis. She moved to Toronto as a young woman where she trained at St. Michael's Hospital and became a Registered Nurse. For many years she worked at St. Michael's Hospital Emergency Department and later at The Hospital for Sick Children. Catherine also worked at Nursing Homes in Toronto, Kitchener and finally in Palliative Care. Loving mother to her three daughters, Julia (Martin) Libling of Phoenix, AZ, Martha (Tobias) Heyworth of Havelock and Sandra Bartman of Waterloo. Sadly missed by her grandchildren, Kathryn and Adam Libling. Dear sister of Erma and Ervin Steinmann and Florence and Harold McFarlane all of New Hamburg and sister-in-law to Arvilla Leis of Tavistock and Jean Leis of Kitchener. Also remembered by Melvin Bartman of Dorset, Gordon Bartman of Willowdale and Doreen Hodgins of Powasson. Catherine was predeceased by her brothers, Vernon and Ralph Leis and brother-in-law, Wilbert Bartman. The Rev. Vernon Roy Leis 60, of 39 Wellington Street, Tavistock passed away in Wilmot Township, Waterloo County on Saturday, February 26, 1994. Rev. Leis was born at Petersburg on November 23, 1933 a son of the late John Leis and the former Catherine Wagler. He was a graduate of Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, Virginia Goshen Biblical Seminary and the University of St. Michael's College, Toronto. He had served as minister of Blenheim Mennonite Church 1961 -1966, Elmira Mennonite Church 1966-1980, Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church Kitchener 1980-1988 and East Zorra Mennonite Church, 16th line from August 1988 until the time of his death. He was a former moderator of the Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada and had served the Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada and served the Mennonite Church in numerous other capacities. Rev. Leis is survived by his wife the former Arvilla Annie Schultz whom he married at Poole on July 2, 1955; four sons, Timothy and wife Anne Leis of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; James Leis of Carrboro, North Carolina; Paul and wife Marilyn Leis of RR 1, Elmwood; David Leis and wife Cheryl Nafziger-Leis of Elmira; one daughter, Katherine and husband Charles Bender of New Hamburg; six grandchildren, Karen, Jerome, Marina and Benjamin Leis of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Brandon and Kristin Leis of RR1, Elmwood; three sisters, Catherine Bartman of Waterloo, Erma and husband Ervin Steinmann of New Hamburg; Florence and husband Harold MacFarlane of New Hamburg; one brother, Ralph and wife Jean Leis of Kitchener; his mother-in-law Katie Schultz of Milverton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Betty and Joseph Grove of Hanover, Shirley and Herbert Schultz of Cambridge and John Schultz of New Hamburg. Darrel Toews, assisted by other clergy, officiated. Interment was in East Zorra Mennonite Cemetery, 16th line. Esther also worked at the K-W Hospital for a short time and volunteered at Nith View for many years.

Beloved mother of Irene Kennell of Wellesley, Laura Ann and her husband Lester Wagler of Wellesley. Florence and her husband Wilmer "Bill" Roth of New Hamburg, David and his wife Carol Schwartz of RR 2, Petersburg and Wayne and his wife Mary Jane Schwartz of Wellesley; dear sister of Ohmer and Sarah Gerber of New Hamburg. JANTZI, Mrs. Ellas (Laura) Peacefully, on Thursday, Dec. 12, 1996, sur- rounded by her family, at Nith View Home, in New Hamburg, Laura Jantzi, of Nith View and formerly of the 5th Line of Wellesley township, born in Wilmot, 84 years ago.

Daughter of the late Solomon R. Gerber and the late Laura Leis.

Laura was a faithful member of Crosshill Mennonite Church, where she was active in the WMSC. She was an avid quilter and enjoyed cooking and gardening.

Loving mother of Melvin and his wife Patricia Jantzi of RR 2, Petersburg, Dorothy and her husband Mervin Roth of New Hamburg, Orland and his wife Eleanor Jantzi of Waterloo, Stanley and his wife Liza Jantzi of RR 1. He was the son of the late Solomon Gerber and the late Laura Leis. He was a member of the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church and had farmed on the fifth line of Wellesley township, retiring to Millbank in 1975.

Passed away peacefully, at Caressant Care Nursing Home in Fergus, on Wednesday, August 24, 2005, at the age of 85 years. He was born in Wellesley, October 4, 1927. Son of the late Moses B. Leis and the late Lydia Kropf. Moses was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wellesley. He was a plumber and tinsmith with the hardware store in Wellesley, retiring in 1993. He also was a member of the Wellesley Fire Department, serving for 15 years. Loving father of Pat and her husband Harry Blinkhorn, Bruce and his wife Dolores Leis, Roger and his wife Patsy Leis, Marilyn Walker, Ann and Rob Montgomery. Lovingly remembered by his 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Melvin and Marie Leis. PTE. WILFRED LEIS

Reported missing last August while engaged in operations in , France, Pte. Wilfred Leis, 24, husband of Mrs. Vera Leis, 120 Glasgow St., and son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Leis, 10 Eden Ave., has now been officially presumed killed.

An official letter received by his wife revealed that he had been riding in a half-truck vehicle near Iffs, France, when it received direct hits from 88-millimetre shells. The, vehicle, the letter continued, caught fire and no one was seen to emerge from the wreck.

A member of the Essex Scottish Regiment, Pte. Leis had enlisted in April, 1942, and, following training at No. 10 B.T.C. here and Camp Borden, he was posted overseas in September, 1943. A native of Wellesley, he was educated here and was employed at the Dominion Tire factory before entering the army. He attended Calvary Evangelical Church.

Besides his wife and parents he is survived by a young daughter, Darlene Marie; three brothers, Milton, Wallace, and Robert, all residing with their parents at 10 Eden Ave.; and four sister, Mrs. Mildred Kaminski, 120 Glasgow St., Mrs. Catherine Musclow, 43 Allan St., Waterloo, Mrs. Marie Kerr, 680 King St. W., and Laura, at home.
