Terrible Death at the G.T.R. Station

John Reinhardt Instantly Killed

Just after the arrival of the 1;15 p.m. train from Berlin on Friday last a terrible accident occurred at the station in this town, whereby John Reinhardt, well known as baggage-man and brakeman on the train, suffered instant death. As is generally the custom, after the passengers had alighted, the employees proceeded to make up the train for the afternoon trip to Waterloo, and it was while thus engaged that poor Reinhardt met his terrible fate.

It appears that the passenger and baggage-car on this train are fitted with what is known as the "Miller" coupling, which works to a charm so far as the cars fitted with it are concerned; but when it becomes necessary to couple freight cars to the "Miller" considerable difficulty is frequently experienced. On this occasion some freight cars were to be attached to the train, and they were brought down from the freight-shed by the engine. When the cars were coming down the line, Reinhardt and Theodore Mann, brakeman, were on top of them at the brakes; but when approaching the passenger portion of the train Reinhardt got off his car and ran ahead to make preparations for the coupling. He failed, however, in guiding the link into the "slot" in the drawhead of the freight car, and it glanced off to the left-hand side forcing the "Miler" coupling past the side of the drawhead, and allowing the cars to come together. When they struck, the momentum carried the passenger and baggage-cars a few feet, holding Reinhardt in the terrible vice. Then they separated; and with the last effort of his life the poor fellow stepped up on the station platform, walked a few steps toward the fence, and fell on the boards in a heap - dead. It was afterward found that his ribs had been crushed in upon his heart, although outwardly the flesh over the spot was scarcely bruised.

John Reinhardt had been connected with the train running on the Galt branch for many years in fact, ever since the opening of the road, if we are not mistaken. He was a remarkably quiet and inoffensive man, ever ready to oblige a friend, and was universally liked. He was aged 37 years, and leaves a widow and 5 children to mourn his fearfully sudden death. It is satisfactory to know, however, that he leaves them above want, having saved over $3000 out of his earning, besides holding a policy in the G.T. employees insurance company. He was widely known to travelers on the Grand Trunk, as well on the main line as on the branch, having been baggage man on the "Dutch mail" when it ran between Galt and Toronto some years ago. The remains were conveyed from his residence in Galt to his father's residence, Shantz Station, on Saturday, and form thence were taken for interment to the R.C. cemetery at Little Germany on Sunday.

Christian Vogel, 70, of 18 Grove St., died early today at his residence following a lengthy illness.

The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Vogel, he was born at Maryhill. He was an employee of the Schlee Button Company for 44 years. Mr. Vogel was a member of Sacred Heart RC Church. His marriage to Marie Ziegler, who survives, took place at Rochester, NY, 49 years ago.

Surviving are one son, Harold, Kitchener; two daughters, Mrs. Alex (Esther) Dunbrook and Mrs. Walter (Irene) Schaefer, both of Kitchener; two brothers, Albert, Kitchener, John, Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Theresa Hinschberberger and Miss Hannah Vogel, both of Kitchener.

The body is resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Friday, prior to the requiem high mass at Sacred Heart Church at 10 o'clock. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home Thursday at 8 p.m. Interment will be made in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Waterloo. Rev. James Casey will officiate.

Born in Breslau Jan. 21, 1884, he was a son of the late Henry Reinhardt and Annie Friedman. He was employed at the Kaufman Rubber Co. for the past 40 years. Mr. Reinhardt attended St. Joseph's RC Church. STRATFORD John Bruder Reinhart, 67, of 15 Douglas St. Stratford, died suddenly Saturday at his home. He was born at Shantz Station, near Kitchener, and started with the CNR in 1912 and retired in 1958 as an engineer Mr. Reinhart was a member of St Josephs RC Church and a former member of the Separate School Board. He was member of the Knights of Columbus and the Canadian Brotherhood of Locomotive Enginemen.

His first wife the former Priscilla Keller, died in 1952 He married Mrs. John Morrison in Kitchener in 1954. She survives. Also surviving are three sons Wilford of Goderich. Edgar and John both of Kitchener; five daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Verna) McCafferry and Mrs. John (Joan) White, both of Stratford; Mrs. Lorne (Rita) McAndrew of London, Ont; Mrs. Frank (Marie) McQuillan of Windsor, Mrs. Harold Shantz New Zealand, formerly of Kitchener

TWO KITCHENER LADS DROWNED IN BRESLAU DAM

Punt Upsets and Layerne Snyder of Detroit and Franklyn Bossenbury of Kitchener Lose Their Lives-Attempt at Rescue Proves Futile-Used Lungmotor.

Two Kitchener lads, Laverne Snider, aged 10 years, son of Mr. and Mrs Ivan Snider of Detroit and Franklyn Bossenberry, aged about 12 years, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Bossenberry of 20 Mitchell Ave, Kitchener, met a tragic death when they were drowned at the Breslau dam on Monday afternoon. Their punt upset and efforts to effect their rescue proved fruitless. Another boy. Howard Weber of 153 Queen St., South, son of Mr and Mrs J. Weber, who accompanied the other boys was not in the boat at the time.

The boys left Kitchener shortly after two o'clock on a fishing expedition. The three boys after their arrival at the dam found a punt in a clump of willows near the flood gates and young Weber after going for a short trip about the pond returned and Snider and Bossenberry got into the boat. They had left their bait near the bridge and stated they were going to get it. Shortly after young Weber, who was cutting a pole in the willows heard Mervin Cressman, aged 8, calling to him that the punt had capsized and he immediately notified the man at the garage nearby. Knowing the lads could not swim, Jacob Rudy, and E S. Eby of the garage responded quickly and waded into the water in an effort to rescue them They got about 40 feet from shore but found it impossible to go further on account of the mud. In the meantime Oscar Williams of Kitchener came along over the bridge in his motor car, and being informed of the accident, he immediately removed his clothes and jumped in to the rescue. In a short time he recovered the body of Bossenberry, which was taken to the garage. He then went in search of Snider's body. Bossenberry appeared to be alive, according to Eby, when he was carried into the garage. Dr. L. R. Shields and Dr. Hagmeier, together with Fire Chief Guerin, arrived on the scene about ten minutes after the body was rescued. The lung motor was used for about half an hour, but life was extinct.

The body of Snider was found in about an hour, after about two feet of water had been let out of the dam, George Reinhart of Breslau, rescuing the body near the spot where Mr. Williams found the body of Bossenberry.

After the arrival of Coroner Lackner a jury was empannelled, who viewed the remains, after which they were removed to Schreiter's under taking parlors.

The young Snider lad was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Snider. The lad Bossenberry leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bossenberry, six brothers and three sisters, viz, Charles, Clayton, Emerson, Claude, Bert, Glenn, Mrs. Ivan Snider, Mrs. C. R. Keyes, Toronto, and Zelda at home.

The deepest sympathy of the community will go out to the families the who have been so suddenly and tragically bereaved.

Beloved wife of the late Jerome Hoch, who predeceased her on September 30, 1987. Dear mother of Tom and Nancy Hoch of Kitchener and Paul and Dorothy Hoch of Lurgan Beach, RR 1, Kincardine. Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Jason and Rachel Hoch, Tim and Mary Hoch. Lisa and Grant McDonald and Tina Hoch. Sadly missed by her great- grandchildren, Samantha and Emily Hoch and Griffin and Owen McDonald. Survived by her brother, Robert Vogel and his wife Geri of Guelph and her sister. Predeceased by her parents, Albert and Winnifred (Strub) Vogel; two brothers, Walter and George Vogel and four sisters, Evelyn Schaefer, Alma Smith, Ruth Kowalski and Mary Wahl.

Mrs. Hoch was a longtime member of St. Teresa Church and the CWL. She was also a member of the Seniors Happy Gang Club of Bridgeport. She was a devoted fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

A very special thanks to all the Health Care Staff at Heritage House Nursing Home and especially Janice Fisher and Doris Holst for their kind- ness, support and wonderful care they gave to Monica.

Born in Waterloo Township, near Maryhill, he was a son of Clements Bruder and the late Mrs. Bruder.

A resident of the Twin Cities for 50 years he had been employed as a supervisor at Uniroyal Co. Ltd., general products division. He worked for Uniroyal for 44 years until retiring in 1967.

For the past year he was a representative for the Fuller Brush Co. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church, the Catholic Council of Men and the 55 Bowling Club.

Besides his father, he is survived by his wife, the former Marie Hergott whom he married in Kitchener Oct. 7, 1937; one son, Clem of Kapuskasing; one daughter, Sister Miriam (Anne) of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, now attending the University of Windsor; two brothers, Allan (Bud) of Willowdale and Cyril of Winnipeg; four sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Violet) Murdock of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs Maitland (Hilda) Coleman, Mrs. Austin (Edna) Lehman and Mrs. Clarence (Verna) Hoch, all of Kitchener and three grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Arthur.

The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Sunday, where the rosary will be recited Monday at 8 p.m. and prayers said Tuesday at 9: 30 a.m., followed by removal to the church for service at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo.

Donations to the Ontario Heart Foundation will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

Hubert Eckenswiller died on Monday at his residence, Imperial Hotel, New Hamburg at the age of 61.

Born in New Hamburg, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eckenswiller. He lived in the community all his life. He worked at Beaver Furniture Co. Ltd., Kitchener.

A bachelor, he was a member of Holy Family RC Church.

Surviving are two brothers, Norman of Stratford and Wilfred of New Hamburg, and a sister, Mrs. Thomas (Alma) O'Rourke of Kitchener.

The rosary was recited Wednesday at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home, followed by removal to Holy Family Roman Catholic church for requiem mass conducted by Msgr. V.A. Priester.

Burial took place in the church cemetery.

Loving husband of Doris Bruder (nee Offen) for 60 years. Survived by his sisters, Marjorie Ireland of Richmond Hill and Phyllis "Honey" Boppre (Larry) of Kitchener. He is also survived by 23 nieces and nephews and many friends. Predeceased by his parents, Clara (nee Reinhart) and Peter Bruder; brother, Maurice (Sally) and by his sister, Rita Gross (Rudy). Ralph worked in the hotel business most of his life. In 1928, at the age of nine, he started as a bell hop at the Windsor Hotel in Kitchener at which time was owned by his uncle, Charlie Bruder. He later worked at the Blue Top Brewery Company and in 1948 became an owner of the Melbourne Hotel in Simcoe, ON which he managed for 35 years. Ralph was a member of the Hotel and Motel Association, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a honourary member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was actively involved in harness racing and was a honourary member of the Ontario Harness Horse Association. Honey died surrounded by the love of her family on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Freeport Health Centre of Grand River Hospital at the age of 80 years. Loving wife to Larry for 59 years. Precious Mom to Debbie (Brian) Lorentz, Donna (Tony) Germann, Diane (Larry) Aigner, Tony (Stephanie) and James (Claire). Kind and caring Gramma to Sheri, Sarah, Lee, Julia, Matthew, Michael, Chantelle, Michelle, Olivia, Caleb and to her special little Jaimee-Lee. Special Great-Gramma to Jackson and Carter Stoneman and Lana and Chyenne Aigner. Survived by her sister-in-law Marcie Winterhault. Also missed by many nieces and nephews and friends. Honey grew up in Breslau and was the daughter of the late Peter and Clara Bruder. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law John Strauss, her sisters Rita Gross and Marjorie Ireland, her brothers, Maurice and Ralph. Honey was a beautiful person who was known for her laugh. She loved to play her accordion for many gatherings and it was always enjoyed by many. She was a member of the St. Anne's social committee for 40 years. Mom loved to quilt and so enjoyed her friends from her Thursday morning quilting group. Honey loved to feed everyone, you could visit anytime and there would just happen to be a freshly baked pie ready.

Honey's family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, September 23, 2012 from 2-5 and 7-9 pm at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467. 105 years old and diagnosed with COVID-19, woman is isolated from the people she loves

She was born on a farm as the First World War was beginning.

She had eight brothers and sisters. As a teenager during Prohibition, she worked in her aunt's hotel in downtown Kitchener, and helped hide bottles of illegal booze in the laundry basket when the police came by.

She married, raised a family and then worked at the University of Waterloo. In retirement, she loved meeting new people, travelling all over North America, and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Now, at the end of a long life filled with warm relationships, Irene Bitschy has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Last week, she was moved from a nursing home in Kitchener to Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

For the first time in her 105 years, she is isolated from the people she loves.

"We don't want her to die feeling that she's alone," said her granddaughter, Heidi Sproul.

Bitschy (pronounced Beechy) had lived nine years at the Forest Heights Revera long-term care home. Her family visited several times a week.

At a time when seniors' homes are the battleground for the disease, Forest Heights is by far the worst hit in Waterloo Region.

There have been 34 deaths from coronavirus there. That's more than half of all the 66 deaths across this community.....

Lifetimes: Childhood memories lasted more than a century

Growing up on a farm meant hard work but there were also magical moments, such as when the pond froze over and the kids on the Harnack family farm would don their skates and slip onto the smooth surface. The boys would light warming fires at the pond's edge and illuminate the surface by lantern so they could skate themselves into exhaustion.

For Irene Bitschy, these were special childhood memories of the 1910s, memories that would only become more colourful as she grew up.

Born Irene Harnack on Oct. 18, 1914, on a Shantz Station farm, she was the middle kid in a family of nine.

Irene was born months after the outbreak of the First World War and in her 10 decades, she would live through many world events including the Spanish Flu epidemic and Prohibition. Her life became really interesting and a little subversive during the latter.

At age 14, Irene took a job at her aunt's hotel in downtown Kitchener. Thanks to overzealous temperance workers, Prohibition was in full force by 1916, banning the serving of alcohol in public places. So it simply went underground, or in the case of the Kitchener hotel, it went up into a laundry basket.

Irene's main job at the hotel was to wash and iron linens in a second-floor room but she had another, equally important role. The hotel posted a guard at the street entrance and when he spotted police heading toward the hotel for a raid, a chain of events began: the men inside gathered up the liquor and knocked on the ceiling. A trap door would suddenly open, Irene would drop her laundry basket down the hole for the men to place the offending liquor in, then she'd haul it up, close the door and hide the bottles under sheets.

Irene admitted that this was the scariest time of her life, always living on the edge, always facing the possibility of arrest.

Life on the farm was also somewhat risky. Her father, Joseph Harnack, ran a still on the farm and he was lucky to have a pal on the police force who alerted him to planned raids which would have ruined his bootleg operation. Irene had remembered that times were desperate, her father had many mouths to feed and limited options.

There were happy times as well on the farm. Picnics and garden parties were frequent, and it was at one of these events at the Harnack home that Irene met William Bitschy, from Maryhill.

William was quite smitten by the pretty Irene, but she wasn't exactly feeling the same. Uncomfortable with his attentions, Irene left the party and hid in her room. William had to take a different tack. He danced with her grandmother and convinced her to intervene on his behalf. It must have worked because Irene agreed to go out with him and the two married in Kitchener in April 1935. Bill's priest in Maryhill had refused to marry the couple, given Irene was not a parishioner, so they married in Kitchener.

With the Depression in full swing, the newlywed's wedding brunch was surprisingly generous, serving a rare treat of hotdogs. The young couple honeymooned in Niagara Falls and would go on to have four daughters: Charlotte, Sheila, Marlene and Lynda.

In the early part of their marriage, the couple lived at a gas station. Irene served ice cream and pumped gas while Bill delivered coal. They later moved to Breslau where they lived for five years before purchasing a farm.

Irene was back to farm life, working alongside her husband. In 1953, Bill landed a job with CN Railway and four years later, the couple moved to Kitchener.

With four daughters to raise, Irene was a stay-at-home mom until she learned about a new residence opening at the University of Waterloo. They were looking for a "house mom" to help students, many who were on their own for the first time. Several were foreign students and these kids were often invited for dinner with Irene and Bill, easing their homesickness.

Irene retired in 1975 and in 1988, Bill died. Always stoic, Irene sold the family home and moved to an apartment. In 1990, at 76, Irene boarded her first airplane, for an Alaskan adventure.

Lynda Tranebo said her mother was kind and loving. "She would do anything for anybody." Irene was also an exceptional cook, particularly potato salad and popcorn balls that she made every Halloween for dozens of neighbourhood kids.

In May, Irene was diagnosed with COVID-19 and made local headlines when the nursing home moved her to hospital for more intensive care. Though she didn't exhibit symptoms, the illness did weaken her organs. Irene died May 22, 2020, at 105.

KITCHENER ATHLETE DIES AT HOSPITAL

One of Kitchener's leading athletes, Carl Reinhardt, passed away at the St. Mary's Hospital on Sunday, aged 23 years. He was prominent as a member of the junior and senior O.H. A. teams. He was in ill health for some time and the past nine days was a patient at the hospital. Death was due to heart failure.

On December 26th, 1931, he was married and leaves a wife, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. H. Reinhardt, 180 Benton St., Kitchener, and two brothers, Roy and Earl.

Many friends attended the funeral held on Tuesday morning with service at St. Joseph's Church at nine a.m.

WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH CHILD SERIOUSLY INJURED

Distressing Accident Results in the Death of Mrs. Henry Reinhardt and Injury to Granddaughter

As a result of a very distressing accident, which occurred at about 9 o'clock on Sunday morning, the death of Mr. Henry Reinhardt Ahrens street west, took place five hours later at the Berlin-Waterloo Hospital and little hopes are entertained for the infant granddaughter of the deceased who has since contracted pneumonia at the same institution.

Mrs., Reinhardt was lighting the gasoline stove at the time, when in a manner unknown her clothing caught fire. Almost instantaneously she was enveloped in a mass of flames and rushed out into the lawn. Her wild screams for help attracted her husband who was sitting out in the yard. And he immediately tore the clothing from her back and attempted to quench the flames by pouring water over her. In in doing so he was severely burned about the right arm which required medical attention.

In passing out of the kitchen it is thought that the. clothing of the granddaughter of the decease, little Marguerite Ferrier, aged fourteen months, ignited, and while Mrs. Reinhardt was being attended to in the yard, the little tot, huddled up in her high chair, was burning. The fire had caught the bottom of her long dress and eaten its way upward with the result that the limbs and face of the child were terribly scorched.

By this time, neighbors had come to their assistance, and Drs. H. H. Huehnergard and H. M. Lackner were summoned. The unfortunate woman and the child were rushed to the Berlin and Waterloo Hospital, were everything possible was done to ease the pain

Mrs. Reinhardt, though suffering agonizing pain, remained conscious to the last, and expired at two o'clock in the' afternoon, about five hours after she had bees admitted to the institution.

The late Mrs. Reinhardt was in her forty-ninth year, and is survived by her husband and three sons, Messrs. Gorge and Maurice of this town, Will of Sault Ste. Marie, and two daughters, Mrs. Will Ferrier and Florence at home.

The funeral was held on Wednesday morning at nine o'dock from the late residence on Ahren Street west to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and thence to the Roman Catholic cemetery for Interment.

John (Jack) Meinzinger, 46, of 1715 King St. E., died suddenly, Wednesday night. Born in Kitchener, he was a son of Lillian Hummel and the late mayor, Joseph Meinzinger. He operated a car lot on King Street, until retiring, three years ago. He was a member of St. Joseph's RC Church. Surviving besides his mother, are a brother, Robert of Willowdale, and a sister, Mrs. Donald (Shirley) LaFlamme of Islington. BROHMAN, Willard Passed away peacefully on Friday, September 5, 2014 at Sunnyside Home, at the age of 92. Beloved husband of Betty for 64 years. Loving father to Lynn Schaman, Wayne (Lynn), Cheryl Bretz (Robert) and Bob (Chris). Proud grandpa to nine grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. He proudly served in the Canadian infantry as a translator during WWII. He was highly respected and known to all as an outstanding business man who knew the value of hard work. He is remembered by his employees as kind, humble and supportive.
