    CLAYTON J. REIST - son of George and Elizabeth (Koch) Reist of Rosendale, was born in the Conestoga area October 25, 1894. He was 10 years old when the family moved into the Bloomingdale-Rosendale area. He assisted with the market gardening and worked at various places until 1917 when he went to the Canadian North West on a harvest excursion and worked in the grain field s at Calgary, Alberta. From, there he went to Ocean Falls, B.C. where he was employed as a pipe fitter in a paper mill for seventeen years. He was a foreman here for twelve years and returned to Rosendale.....


    Clayton Reist grows about 80,000 cabbages which are shredded into fifty gallon barrels for sauerkraut. About 20 tons are salted away each year. The cabbages are stored at an even cool temperature and the sauerkraut is cured about a month before it is ready for sale. Six barrels a week are sold in the Kitchener area. The lusty odour o f sauerkraut pervades many homes in the winter months. Louis Pasteur declared it to be one o f the most useful and healthful vegetable dishes on earth. it contains all the vitamins. It is rich in lime, potash and phosphorous, iron and calcium, the bone building substance....
