    BOMBER CRASH MEMORIAL

Ilkey, England \endash A new memorial to six Canadians airmen killed in a Second World War crash was dedicated Tuesday, exactly 62 years after the tragedy on the bleak moorlands of Yorkshire.

A large crater still marks the spot on the English hillside where the Halifax bomber came down. Just a few metres away, wreckage from the aircraft have worked their way to the surface among the heather moss.

After years of effort and painstaking research, the memorial was unveiled to remember the crash that killed everybody onboard \endash the six Canadians as well as a Scottish crew member. On a still, misty day, about 30 people made a half hour walk up from the small town of Ilkley for the ceremony. Surrounded by sheep and a dozen journalists, locals and Canadians, paid tribute to the perished crew.

The dedication of the 1.2 metre stone plinth designed by artist John Webber was organized by Paul Reilly and his father, John, whose best friend Felix Byrne was the only Scot on the plane. The Canadians aboard were Pilot Donald George MaLeod, 21 of Waterford, Ont.; bomb aimer Robert Henry Rahn, 22, Kitchenor, Ont.; Navigator Lewis Riggs, 20, of Toronto, Ont.; Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, William George King, 27 of Teepee Creek, Alta.; Air Gunner George Ed. Martin, 21, of Toronto, Ont.; Air Gunner Albert Lorne Mullen, 19, of Burnaby, BC., who grew up in Regina. The memorial has a brass plaque bearing their names and rank.

    Local Builder, Contractor
Donald Brown was a man of many talents and interests

Donald Brown, local builder and contractor, died April 2, 1999 in his 70th year. He had been married to Hazel (Dreisinger) for almost 40 years, and was father to Bob, and to Christine, Marion and Grace. As early as age ten, he helped his father, Jacob "Jake" Brown, build the chapel for the Dreisingr Funeral Home, and the father-and-son team also built the Purity Diary, Weber's grocery store and Coty's grocery store in St. Jacobs (now the Stone Crock restaurant). Until his semi-retirement in 1991, Brown worked in partnership with his brother, Jerry, in Brown Brothers Contracting, and then worked on his own for a few years. Marion remembers working with "Donny" in 1961, cleaning windows in the almost-finished Elmira Fair grandstands. Among some of "Donny's buildings" are the Royal Bank, Brox's Olde Town Village, many churches, the original Freiburger's Grocery store, Trinity United church, Elmira curling rink and "thirty-five houses from the foundation up." If a job required more hands, Brown hired his skilled neighbours and family members. He was efficient and meticulous and expected those who worked with him to be the same. You never got up on a roof without all the tools you needed. And you never showed up for work without a sharp pencil and a tape! When describing his work and community service, one usually starts by saying "for many years." For many years, he helped set up and dismantle the barriers and temporary shelters for Elmira's Maple Syrup Festival. For many years, he served on the Woolwich Agricultural Society, was granted an honourary membership and, in 1991, was given an award for "Meritorious service to agriculture." That same year, Brown decided to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region. He was a house leader on the 1993 Jimmy Carter work project and had worked on almost all the local Habitat building projects, persuading his contacts in the building trades to "come and help" with plumbing, roofing, dry walling, electrical and cement work. His attention to detail was appreciated and so was his self-effacing willingness to work with other volunteers, even those who had only a little experience. Did he have time for hobbies. Certainly. As a teenager, he played the trombone and later sang with the K-W Barbershoppers. For many years, Brown sang in the choir and served on various boards at St. James Evangelical Lutheran church. He and his wife enjoyed dancing lessons, trips to Florida (they went 30 times) and Hawaii. Don's compassionate and generous spirit can inspire all of us. His unique sense of humour, his crazy quirks, his calm silent strength and his never-ending goodwill for those around him will be missed. This article was written by Marion Roes, Camille St. Amand (granddaughter) and Stephen Jones (Habitat for Humanity Waterloo Region).

    Obituary for Betty Mae Gingrich

Peacefully on May 12, 2020 at the age of 91 years, surrounded by her loving family our angel Betty Mae Gingrich got her wings. She left us the way she lived with strength, dignity, great faith, charity, kindness, acceptance and love, so very much love.

Mom was born on January 5, 1929 in Mitchell, Ontario and at a young age the family moved to Elmira where she grew up. As a young wife and Mother she had the courage to move west to Manitoba, and after three years in Steinbach, the family settled in Gimli.

Mom lived her life to the fullest, with a sense of adventure, dedication to her family, and forward thinking. If life served up lemons, she shed a little tear, pulled herself up, made those lemons into lemonade and served it to the world.

Mom was a born teacher and taught for 32 years. She fondly remembered all of her students and you just had to mention a name and she would share a story about them that brought a smile to her face. Many of the colleagues she taught with became life long friends, with whom she shared many memories.

Mom had many passions. She was an avid knitter, knitting love in to every stitch of her Icelandic sweaters, mitts, prayer shawls and countless baby sweaters. She loved to travel, and travelled to almost every continent. She passed on her love of travel to all of us and widened our horizons to be aware of more than our little piece of the world. She played a mean game of Scrabble, beat us all at Jeopardy and could name every bird. Her mind remained sharp until the end.

Mom had great faith and truly believed in the power of prayer. She believed that through living her faith she could help the world be a better place. The fellowship and friendship of her church family were a significant part of her life.

Mom loved her family so very much. We all knew how special we were to her. She taught us how important it is to keep each other close and accept each other for who we are, and if we did this we would never be lonely or alone.

Mom is survived by her four children, Gayanne Prise, Jane (Les) Schoonmaker, Michael Gingrich, Heidi Gingrich (Dan Goray); seven grandchildren, Russell, Abby (Rob), Ian, Megan (Kyle), Ethan, Devan, Felicia (Don); and six great grandchildren, Kelsey, Shealyn, Brayden, Tripp, AJ and Silas. By her sisters Carol Stortz, Sandra (Clint) Rohr; brothers, Jack (Helen) Brown, Bill (Joyce) Brown; sisters in law Velorous (John) Shearer, Eileen Gingrich; brothers in law Virgil (Della) Gingrich, Delmar (Marguerite) Gingrich; along with countless nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

She was predeceased by her parents William and Gladys Brown; brother Howard (Mary) Brown; and sisters Jean (Walter) Hachborn, Ruth (Wolf) Fink; brother in law Cyril Stortz; parents in law Ozias and Naomi Gingrich; brothers in law Newton (Mary) Gingrich, Vernon Gingrich; sister in law Vietta (Tom) Oshiro; nephew Daryl; her children's father Gordon Gingrich; and an infant daughter.
Mom we miss you so much already. You were our rock and soft place to land. We will take so much comfort in knowing that the angels will wrap you in their loving arms and keep you safe until we meet again. For those of you who had the privilege to know her, we hope you remember her with a smile!

The family would like to thank Dr Blelloch and the nurses and staff of the Gimli Community Health Centre, the Gimli and Selkirk dialysis staff, her homecare workers, meals on wheels staff and the MAID program who all gave her excellent care and enabled her to live and die with dignity. We appreciate your kindness and care.
Thank-you to Pastor Rick Schulz of the Gimli Lutheran Church for the comfort and spiritual guidance he provided to Mom and her family.

There will be no funeral service at this time. Neil Bardal Funeral Centre in care of arrangements. Mom supported many charities, as expressions of sympathy a donation can be made to a charity of your choice in her name.

Jack was a respected businessman who co-owned and operated W.C. Brown & Sons Clothing and Tailor Shop with his brother Howard, until the mid 1980s. He also founded John G. He was a longtime, faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church in Elmira. He served his Lord by doing numerous tasks in the church, including many years as a councilman and Sunday School superintendent; but his biggest pleasure was singing in the church choir. Jack had a beautiful voice and loved music of all types. He sang duets with Jackie and was a longtime member of the Schneider Male Chorus, and the Gloryland Chorus.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral home visitation or funeral service. A celebration of Jack's life and faith will be held at a later date. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the healthcare professionals who cared for Jack so that he could remain in his home for as long as possible and to the caring and dedicated staff who looked after Jack at Columbia Forest in Waterloo. A special thank you to Jess for all your visits with him. As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. James Lutheran Church or Grand River Regional Cancer Center would be appreciated.
