On Monday morning, October 29, 1917, a prominent and respected citizen of New Germany breathed his last in the person of Edward Halter. Mr. Halter was born in Lower Alsace on October 12, 1834. At nine years of age he emigrated with his parents to Canada and upon reaching maturity he took up a farm near the village of New Germany. This he cleared and worked successfully for many years.

In his early youth he had little opportunity to get an education. After having gained some sort of independence, he improved his mind while still farming with a wonderful stock of solid learning. He spoke on the platform and placed his views effectively be fore his hearers. He also spoke and wrote French.

As Justice of the Peace he secured a more than ordinary knowledge of legal affairs and was the trusted advisor of his neighborhood in intricate family and legal affairs.

Mr. Halter, 1856, married Mary, daughter of Jos. Sharbach. They raised a large family of children, of whom are still living: Andrew, in Denver; Clement, in North Dakota; Mrs. Gregory Kloepfer, in New Germany; Edward and Theresa at home. The oldest son was Rev. Joseph Halter, professor of St. Jerome's College at the time of his death, 1896. One of the daughters, Veronica, joined the School Sisters de Notre Dame, in which society she worked many years and died 1916.

The deceased went to Europe several times, passing through England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, where he visited his nephew, a student, as early as 1878. He saw the pope at Rome, but would not comply with the regulation of appearing in evening dress, being specially admitted to greet His Holiness in farmer's tweeds. In a letter about his visit to the pope he said: "I did not bow as low before His Holiness as some of the people in regulation attire, but, I am sure, I offered him as sincere homage and veneration as any. The pope is a sovereign who rules an empire without crown or sword. His power is that he represents the spiritual kingdom of God on earth. Popes no longer crown kings, or tolerate bishops who are princes. They no longer have crusades, in which enthusiasm for the Holy Land degenerates into plundering and conquest; the Turks now rule Palestine, seemingly with God's approval."

Mr. Halter was frequently urged to stand for office. Had he not declined he might have risen to important positions. He felt also that he lacked the refinement and social acquirements needed to mingle with those in higher walks of life.

In 1874 he was elected to the township council, served three years, two years (1877 and '78) he was deputy-reeve and one year (1879) reeve. In 1880 he was the most active promoter of the Hopewell Creek Fire Insurance Company of New Germany, of which he was president six years, a director twelve years. In 1874 he was appointed Justice of the Peace, through Moses Springer, provincial member of parliament for N. Waterloo. He was a Notary Public and Commissioner of the High Court for about 45 years.

Edward Halter was the son of Alexis Halter and Caroline Haas. He had three brothers and three sisters. The family came from Alsace to Harve by wagon in two weeks, crossed the ocean in an English sailing vessel in 42 days, continued from New York to Albany by steamer, thence by canal boat to Rochester and across to Hamilton by sail. Occupying a log cabin, the father earned a poor living working for a kindly Mennonite, Dan Shantz, bringing home flour on his shoulders and carrying maple sugar to Preston with his oldest son, Edward.

The deceased was over six feet tall, broad and deep chested, very strong, attracting attention at once by his heavy bulk, voice and bearing. His wife was very tall also. The old village school master said that their children at christening were as big as others a year old.

The Very Rev. Father Johann Steffan, who died so unexpectedly in the first few days of this month, has been followed on Thursday, at the end of the same month by another member of the congregation of the Resurrection. Father Joseph Halter, at present Director of Studies at S. Jerome's College here, died on Thursday evening shortly after 10 pm at St. Joseph's Hospital in Guelph.

The deceased was, up until 2 years ago, strong and vigorous and appeared to be the possessor of an iron constitution. However, a serious cold he caught some time ago overcame him to such an extent that he could no longer attain his old vigour, in spite of all precautions. Repeated attacks of flu, and especially, the appearance of a heart problem as a result of an infection of the heart valves, transformed gradually the man brimming with strength and health into a frail and ailing invalid.

Soon after the beginning of the current year, he had to give up almost every strenuous activity, however, he retained the supervision of the various faculties in the college until shortly before his death. His heart problems became so prevalent during the course of the summer that even walking caused him breathing problems and caused general exhaustion.

His condition then already was declared hopeless by the experts and for months, the patient already accepted his certain fate, full of patience and trust in God and without losing his friendly and open manner, He spent the autumn months in the peaceful and charming vicarage in St. Agatha, and after a stay of several weeks in Berlin, was transferred to the hospital in Guelph, as was announced only last week.

In recent weeks, dropsy had affected him as a result of the heart problems, to which also Bright's kidney disease and bronchitis were connected, and recently, in the Guelph Hospital, his condition had been very precarious. On Thanksgiving Day still, he was cheerful when several priests from the college here visited him.

Already, on the previous evening, the last rites had been administered to him. Towards 10: 00 o'clock in the evening, signs of approaching death were noted, and Father's death was already mourned in Berlin as a result of a misunderstood telephone message. At 12: 15 a.m. on Friday morning, he actually died, and Father Halter stepped before his Heavenly Judge in the fullest sense and in full surrender.

Already on Friday, his remains were brought back to the residence of his father in New Germany. On Sunday afternoon at 4: 00 p.m., the conveyance of the same took place to St.Boniface Church which was adorned with symbols of mourning; a death-watch was held by the coffin surrounded with flowers and candles during the following night by members of the C.M.B.A. of New Germany. Before the burial service on Monday at 10: 00 a.m., the priests present prayed the rites of death. The solemn death service was read in the presence of hundreds of onlookers, not all of whom could find seating in the large church, by Very Rev. W. (Klopfer) Kloepfer, D.D., provincial C.R., assisted by Very Rev. A. Weiler, C.R., D.D., and Very Rev. W.V. Kloepfer, C.R. The local priest, Very Rev. Father St. Foerster functioned as master of ceremonies. The mass was followed immediately by the funeral sermon, held by Very Rev. H. Aeymans, C.R., of St. Agatha. He emphasized the loving and dutiful influence of the departed and reminded his listeners of the great responsibility a priest takes on as a shepherd of souls. He expressed words of consolation to the relatives, and indicated the possibility of an eternal reunion in the afterlife. After Monsignor McEvay, rector of the cathedral in Hamilton, had spoken the last prayers over the coffin, those present approached, in order, to cast a last glance on the well-known features, while a funeral march was played by the organ. A solemn requiem was performed during the service by the students' choir.

The school-children led off the procession to the cemetery; about 100 members of the C.M.B.A. of Berlin (to which branch the deceased belonged), Waterloo, St. Agatha, Baden, St. Clements, Hespeler, Galt, Guelph, Stratford and Walkerton followed. The priests present congregated in front of the coffin; among them, besides those already mentioned, the following honourable gentlemen: Vicar-general Elena & T. Spetz, C.R., D.D., of Berlin; Fehrenbach C.R., D.D., of St. Mary's College, Kentucky; Kasprzycki, C.R., Piekowski, C.R., and A. Spetz, C.R. D.D., of Chicago, Guianane of St. Michael's College, Toronto; Hinchy, Hamilton; Slaven, Galt, and O'Loane, S.J., Guelph. The coffin was carried by 6 students from the college. Very Rev. W. Kloepfer carried out the prayers at the graveside, and the good Father was carried to his last resting place with the strains of the beautiful song, "Fate will spare no-one." The number of visitors at the burial from out-of-town was very large; among them were Mr. Chr. Kloepfer from Guelph, M.P. for South-Wellington, Mr. Haas of Walkerton, and Misters F. Buchheit and J. Fornes of Buffalo. Today, Thursday, at 8.00am there will be a solemn memorial mass in the Catholic Church in Berlin.

The very Rev. gentleman was a son of Mr. Edward Halter of New Germany and was born there himself on March 4, 1857. After leaving school, he worked in a Guelph store for several years. Then, he attended St. Michael's College in Toronto and later, St. Jerome's College in Berlin. In 1879, he entered the Order of the Resurrection in Rome and was ordained a priest in 1886. On his return, he taught in the college here and then, in St. Mary's College in Kentucky. In Chicago, he founded St. Stanislaus College and headed it for 2 years. In 1892, he returned to Berlin and was named Director of Studies in the College.

The deceased was an indefatigable worker, who knew neither fatigue nor rest, was a strict but fair superior, and an eager, self-sacrificing pastor. Study and research were recreation to him. As temporary pastor of the Berlin congregation during the absence of Very Rev. W. Kloepfer a few years ago, he earned the greatest respect and his clear, well-thought-out sermons always made a significant impression. In his dealings, he was always open and affable; pretence was unknown to him; his whole being was one of those which at first repel because of apparent roughness, but which are all the more pleasing as a result of their candour.

Although removed forever from our midst, his memory will live forever among his relatives, his fellow priests, the students and members of the Berlin congregation as that of a loving son and brother, a far-sighted advisor, an excellent teacher and a selfless pastor and impressive preacher whose only goal was to honour God and whose constant striving was a loyal and self-sacrificing fulfillment of his duty.

PHILIP FEHRENBACH

PRESTON, Nov. 30 - Philip Fehrenbach, 67, of 217 Guelph street, died today at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, as a result of a fractured hip suffered when he fell in Waterloo, last Wednesday. Mr. Fehrenbach, who was born in New Germany Feb. 26, 1873, had been a resident of Preston for 26 years. He operated a harness shop here. Before moving to Preston he lived in Kitchener for eight years. Mr. Fehrenbach was a member of St. Clement’s R.C. church, the Holy Name Society and a member of the Catholic Cemetery Board. Surviving are his widow, formerly Johanna Elchert, a sister, Mrs. Ignatius Schlosser of Waterloo, an adopted nephew, Peter at home and a brother, Albert of New Germany. The funeral will be held at St. Clements church Tuesday with requiem high mass at 9.30 a.m. Interment will be in the Roman Catholic cemetery. Remains will rest at the Gordon Pass Funeral Home until this evening at 7 o'clock when they will be removed to his home, 217 Guelph street.

Death of Mrs. John Hubertus

The many friends of John Hubertus, the popular young clerk in the Geo. Peck Co's store in Dansville, were pained to learn Saturday afternoon of the death of his wife, Mrs. Amelia Hubertus, which occurred about three o'clock. It was known to only a few that she was ill, and when it was announced that she was dead a feeling of sadness went through the community and much sympathy was expressed for the bereaved husband. She died from acute Bright's disease.

Mrs. Hubertus' name was Amelia Halter and she was 35 years old. She came from New Germany in Canada far from Buffalo, and had lived in the village a short time. She was married to Mr. Hubertus at St. Mary's church last January and with her husband was sappily enjoying her home on West Avenue. She was much esteemed by all by acquaintances and her loss is mourned by her husband, father and mother and other relatives as well as by many friends and the L. C. B. A. of which ,he was an honored member. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's church Monday morning and the remains were taken to New Germany for interment.

Edgar H. Schlosser, 71, of 231 Mary St., Waterloo, died Sunday at K-W Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born Oct. 21, 1888, in Voisinburg, he was an excise officer for the past 45 years. He lived in Waterloo for the past 60 years. A member of St. Louis RC Church, he belonged to the Holy Name Society.

Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ignatius Schlosser, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Veronica O'Drowsky, May 8, 1956. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Jeanne Bradshaw of Waterloo, one brother, Joseph of Waterloo; one sister, Lorraine of Waterloo; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Edgar J., in 1953.

The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel funeral Home where the rosary will be recited Tuesday at 8 p.m. After prayers at the funeral home Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., requiem high mass will be solemnized at St. Louis Church at 10 a.m. by Rev. Hubert Gehl. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

LIGHTNING'S FATAL WORK.

Two men killed and Three Persons Wounded at Berlin During the Storm Last Saturday.

On Saturday last at 12 o'clock lightning struck the new dwelling of Wm. Fehernbach, saddler, of Berlin, and instantly killed two men Wesley Learn of Berlin and young Merklinger of Dundalk, who were working on the building, and wounded Mr. Bower, Rosie Straus and Jacob Schoeno.

This is one of the saddest catastrophes that has befallen the town of Berlin for many years. The unpleasant duty of breaking the sad news to the young wife of Mr. Learn is beyond description.

Mr. Bartlett, the undertaker had charge of the dead and embalmed the bodies in a manner that proved very satisfactory. At all the Churches in town feeling reference was made on Sabbath, to the sad lightning fatality of Saturday and the bereaved families have the heart felt sympathy of all. The funeral was largely attended on Monday afternoon. The remains of Merklinger were, taken to Dundalk on Monday morning. His parents live seven miles from that village on a farm. He was an excellent young man

Oct. 9 I and Herb went to market - looked like rain mornings - I forgot my rain coat - slow market - I started delivering early - when I called at Joe Fehrnbach's for to take an order for this afternoon, I was told by the elderly lady that stays there, that the oldest daughter of Joe Fehrnbach's "Nora" died this morning at 5 oclock. This was a shocking surprise to me, for I had not heard that she was sick, but had often wondered that I did not see her when I came with vegetables, only her younger sister "May" and the lady that is staying there used to come to the door.
