Frightened Horse Drags Berlin Boy Under Street Car While He Was Driving Home From Galt Saturday Evening

Another Berlin young man met with a sad fatality on Saturday evening when Emil Bernhardt, the sixteen- year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bernhardt, 184 Benton street, was dragged under the wheels of a Galt, Preston and Hespeler car between Preston and Galt and succumbed to his injuries an hour later ia the Galt General Hospital.

The young man was returning from Galt about 10.30 o'clock where he had gone earlier in the evening and when approaching Preston the G. P. & H. car with its strong head-light and an automobile with two mere strong lights, were coming toward the young driver en route to Galt. The horse became frightened and leaped on the track in front of the car which was being slackered in speed by the motorman. The car struck the buggy throwing Bernhardt to the track and crushing his head beneath the heavy trucks. The vehicle was smashed to pieces but the horse escaped without injury and was not recaptured until Sunday morning.

The unfortunate victim was placed on the street car and hurriedly conveyed to the Galt Hospital where he passed away a few minutes after his arrival. He was terribly disfigured and was scarcely recognizable, his nose and jaw being crushed.

Young Bernhardt had loaned the horse from Gregor Tschirhart who had given him the outfit in return for some work which had been performed for him. Mr. Tschirhart understood, however, that Bernhardt was to drive about town but the lad informed his parents of his intentions of going to Galt to see a lady friend. On his way he picked up a chum named Gruby, who accompanied him as far as Preston, when he urged his friend to return on account of the approaching storm. Bernhardt demurred, however, and persisted in going to Galt, whereupon Gruby left him and returned to Berlin by rail.

It was not until late on Sunday morning that the parents of the boy learned of the death of their son by Chief O'Neill. The father and an elder brother of the boy are in Galt to-day attending the inquest which opened at 11 o'clock this morning.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon from the residence on 184 Benton street where services will be held and to Mount Hope cemetery for interment.

This is the third fatality which has taken place on the Galt, Preston and Hespeler railway this year.

MRS. REGINA DORSCHT

Mrs. Regina Dorscht of 51 Braun St., Kitchener, died Monday night at St. Mary's Hospital. She was 76.

Mrs. Dorscht was born July 8, 1875, at Bamberg, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Tschirhart. Her husband predeceased her five years ago. Mrs. Dorscht was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

Surviving are five sons, Allen, Berlets Corners, John and Leo, Waterloo; Edward, Kitchener; and Clarence, Rummelhardt; five daughters, Mrs. Alex (Isabel) Ertel and Mrs. Emil (Eleanor) Huehn, of Bamberg; Mrs. James (Elm) Ertel. Elmira; and Mrs. Art (Rosetta) Hendrick, Waterloo.

Also two brothers, William, Haysville and Len of Kitchener; and two sisters. Mrs. Mary Hoefley, Kitchener; and Mrs. Agnes Detzler, Hespeter. Forty-seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren also survive.

The body was at the Walsh Funeral Home where prayers were said Thursday at 8: 30 a.m. The funeral followed at Sacred Heart Church with interment in Kitchener Mount Hope R.C. Cemetery.

Heart disease resulted in the death of Mrs. Christina Detzler, R.R. No., 4, Mannheim Road, which occurred yesterday at her late residence. Deceased was 57. She was born on May 12, 1887, in Bamberg, daughter of the late Gregory Tschirhardt and Magdelena Siegfried. Mrs. Detzler attended St. Joseph's R.C. Church and was a member of the Christian Mothers' Society. She married Michael Detzler on October 23, 1906 in Kitchener. Surviving, besides her husband, are four sons: Clarence of St. Agatha, Harold and Earl at home and William R.C.E.M.E., Woodstock; three daughters, Mrs. Theo Henhoeffer of Petersburg, Mrs. Wilfred Henhoeffer of Waterloo and Miss Eileen Detzler at home; three brothers, Leo and John Tschirhardt of Kitchener and William of Haysville; three sisters, Mrs. S. Dorscht and Mrs. J. Hoefele of Kitchener and Mrs. D. Detzler of Hespeler. One son and one daughter predeceased her. Remains are resting at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home until Thursday morning, when removal will be made to the residence, pending funeral arrangements.

Simon Tschirhart

There passed away at St. Mary's hospital Thursday night. Mr. Simon Tschirhart of Breslau in his 38th year. Deceased had been in his usual health until Tuesday when he suffered an acute attack of appendicitis. He was rushed to the hospital but too late to save his life. Mr. Tschirhart resided on a farm near Breslau for the past 12 years. He was a member of St. Boniface church, New Germany. He is survived by his wife, six sons, Raymond, Stuart, Frank, Peter, Ralph and Stanley all at home and three daughter, Kate, Rose and Madeline all at home, by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Techirhart, Kitchener, three brothers, Leo and John of Kitchener and William of Haysville and four sisters, Mrs. Simon Dorscht, Kitchener, Mrs. Joseph Hoffele, Kitchener, Mrs. Dan Detzler, Haysville, and Mrs. Michael Detzler, Kitchener. The funeral took place from the residence of the deceased's father, Mr. Gregory Tschirhart, 17 Grove street, on Monday, to St. Mary's church where a service took place at 10 o'clock. Following a brief illness, Mrs. Emil W. Huehn, 45, of RR 1, Bamberg, died Friday at K-W Hospital. Born Sept. 29, 1911, in Wellesley Township, she was the former Eleanor Dorscht, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Simon Dorscht. She was married to Emil Huehn, who survives, Jan. 7, 1929, in Heidelberg. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Heidelberg.

Surviving are two sons, Clare of Kitchener and Raymond of Heidelberg; four daughters, Mrs. Lester (Marie) Kipfer of Kitchener and Doreen, Gloria and Virginia of Heidelberg; five brothers, Leo and Edward of Kitchener, John and Allen of Waterloo and Clarence of Rummelhart; four sisters, Mrs. Alex Ertel of Bamberg, Mrs. Harold Schnurr of Doon, Mrs. Arthur Heinrich of Waterloo and Mrs. James Ertel of Elmira. One daughter, Violet, died in infancy.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 pm at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Heidelberg, with burial in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Heidelberg, Rev. P. W. Brouse will officiate. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 10 am on Tuesday when removal will be made to the church.

Mrs. Weiler was predeceased by one brother, Charles; sister, Olive and son, James. Wilf Tschirhart was never a man who did the expected.

Take his education. As a kid, Wilf spent hours poking around in the Nith River exploring nature, instead of being in class. Even when he did take in a full day of school, he couldn't wait for the bell to ring in his one room New Hamburg schoolhouse so he could race down to the river's edge.

Everything about nature fascinated him, particularly animal behaviour.

Skip ahead nearly eight decades and there he was on the podium at Wilfrid Laurier University's convocation accepting a PhD in geography and environmental science. Wilf was 88 and obviously wasn't looking toward a career in the sciences, but he had achieved something remarkable and was thought to be the school's oldest graduating PhD student.

The year was 2009 and Wilf was interviewed by the Record about his achievement. His explanation as to why he wanted to complete advance degrees in his 80s was simple: "Doing nothing is like practising for death," he said. "You have to work your brain every day.".....

Wilf was born in Kitchener, one of six kids. But his parents moved to a Haysville farm one cold winter when he was three, perhaps the first time he exhibited a strong-willed determination to not follow the crowd or in this case, his family....

Wilf found a job with N.O. Heipel, a Preston contractor that specialized in building community arenas all over Ontario, but it was while working in North York that he found more than a new project to oversee.

"He met a little Irish lady," said Chris, referring to his mother, Elizabeth Sheridan.

The couple met at a church concert. Elizabeth was already seated when poor Wilf came along, disappointed that the assigned row shown on his ticket was already filled. Elizabeth made the whole row scooch over so Wilf could sit down.

They married in June 1955, and moved into the bungalow on Hidden Valley Road that Wilf had been building long before he met Elizabeth. That little house and its numerous additions '97 it seemed Wilf was never really satisfied the house was done '97 would be home to the couple and their children for many years....

It had been while working on his first degree that Wilf's life took a sad turn. Elizabeth developed Alzheimer's.

"He'd looked after her for five years," said Chris, adding that when his mother finally had to move into long-term care at Freeport Hospital, Wilf would come to the hospital twice a day to feed her. After Elizabeth died in 1999, Wilf set up a university scholarship at his alma mater, in her name.

Throughout his senior years Wilf remained unstoppable, despite a hip replacement, arthritis in every joint and deafness in one ear, the result of a military training accident. He simply learned to read lips and rely on a hearing aid in his less damaged ear. ...

Wilfred Gregory (PhD TSCHIRHART

TSCHIRHART, Wilfred Gregory (PhD) September 2,1921 - September 20, 2017 Died at his home in St. Agatha. Survived by his brother-in-law Earl Querin, many loved nieces and nephews. Father of Christopher of Markdae, and Mary Jane Baulk of St. Agatha. Loving Grandfather to Jessica Mendes (Phil), and Rebecca Baulk (Jesse Brideau). Predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (nee Sheridan) of 46 years. Predeceased by his parents, William and Margarethe (nee Huck), brothers, Roy (Marie), Walter (Dolly), Carl (Grace), Joe, and his sister, Rita. Born in Kitchener, Ontario and grew up on a farm at Haysville, Ontario during the Great Depression. Having to leave school after grade 10 to help support his family in the 1930's to become a carpenter; he always longed to return to school. Wilf served in the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Engineers, service and works company, in WW II, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major. After the war, he spent his early career in the construction industry, in building design as works Forman for N.O. Heipel of Preston. Wilf achieved a structural Engineering certificate. He was the designer and construction foreman in the building of many hockey arenas throughout Ontario, which are still standing, including Waterloo, Ayr, Godrich, East York, Burlington, South Porcupine, Gore Bay, Little Current, Providence Bay, and Mindemoya. It was while overseeing the construction of the East York Arena that he met his wife Elizabeth, the love of his life, while attending a concert at St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto. Married in Toronto, they lived in the house he built for his family on Hidden Valley Road, which he expanded as the family grew; a wonderful place for our family to live and grow up. He worked as a Sr. Mechanical Draftsman at Canadian Blower and Forge in Kitchener for over 30 years. Wilf volunteered as a teaching assistant at St. Agatha Catholic School and as a care giver at Freeport Hospital. Always a believer in education in all its forms both practical and informal throughout his life, he fulfilled his dream of higher education after retirement by attending Wilfrid Laurier University, where he was adopted by the students in all his classes. He was conferred a Bachelor of Arts 1993, Honours Bachelor of Arts 1999, Master of Arts 2002 and Doctorate of Arts 2009, all in the field of Environmental Studies and Geography. At age 88 he was the third oldest person to achieve a Doctorate from an accredited University. LANCE-CPL. S. E. TSCHIRHART

MARYHILL, Sept. 19 [1944] - One of five sons of Mrs. T. Tschirhart of Maryhill, and the late Mr. Tschirhart, serving in the armed forces, Lance Cpl. Stanley Edmond Tschirhart, 24, has been reported missing in Italy. Wounded in Sicily in August, 1943, Lance-Cpl. Tschirhart had gone back on duty only in January of this year.

Enlisting with the 1st Tank Regiment, in March, 1942, the young soldier went overseas in June of the. same year. Shrapnel wounds he received in the Sicilian campaign placed him in an African hospital for long months, before being sent to Italy.

Desire to be with his twin brother, Pte. Stuart Tschirhart, a member of the Royal Canadian Regiment prompted him to transfer from his own regiment on his return to duty to the R.C.R., losing his sergeant's stripes in the move.

Hope is being held out by Mrs. Tschirhart, Maryhill, that her son is being held a prisoner and is all right.

"I just have a hunch he is a prisoner," she said today in reporting the casualty.

Mrs. Tschirhart's three other sons who are all members of the Canadian Army, include Lance-Cpl. Frank Tschirhart who is also in England, Pte. Ray Tschirhart in England and Pte. Peter Tschirhart.

L-CPL, STANLEY TSCHIRHART By Record Correspondent 11 Oct 1944

MARYHILL, Oct. 11-Lance-Cpl. Stanley Edmond Tschirhart, 24, who was listed missing in Italy on Sept. 6, is now reported to have been killed in action on that date. He is one of five sons of Mrs. T. Tschirhart of Maryhill and the late Mr. Tschirhart, in the service of their country. His mother received the telegram yesterday.

Lance Cpl. Tschirhart had returned to duty in January of this year after recovering from wounds received in Sicily in August, 1943. He was born in Kitchener, but went to school at Maryhill.

He enlisted with the 1st Tank Regiment in March, 1942, and went overseas three months later. He relinquished his sergeant's stripes in order to be with his twin brother, Pte. Stuart Tschirhart of the Royal Canadian Regiment.

Other brothers in the army include Lance-Cpl. Frank, and Pte. Ray, both overseas, and Pte. Peter Tschirhart.

Surviving, in addition to Lance- Cpl. Stanley's mother and brothers, are three sisters: Mrs. Gerald Schippanoski of Kitchener, Mrs. Frank Lehman. R.R. 1, Breslau, and Madeline at home. He was predeceased by one brother in August, 1943.

Passed away peacefully at Hospice Wellington on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 in his 82nd year.

Loving partner to Carol Freiburger for 23 years and dear husband of the late Sharon Lee Dorscht (nee Harnock).

Lloyd leaves behind his beloved family, daughters Debbie and husband Jeff Sauder, Laurie Schumacher and partner David Krysko, Linda and husband Harry Dietrich and his son Jason Dorscht; grandchildren Randi and Faiz Hassanzada, Candice and Bryan Tansley, Amber and Josh Gualtieri, Joshua Dietrich, Carrie-Anne Dietrich and Chrissy Degen, Dallas Dietrich, Justin Sauder and Hope Natywary; Ashley Sauder and Mike Miedema, Cory Schumacher and Kristen Defrancesco and Eric Schumacher and Danielle Rex; great grandchildren Cecilia, Jaxson, Maddox, Bentley, Avery, Mya, Decan, Addisson, Tatum and Mila.

Also survived by a brother Harold Dorscht and his wife Jessie, a sister Erma Darechuk and a sister-in-law Alice Dorscht.

Lloyd will be missed by Carol's family Barry, Brad, Bruce and their families, along with the Harnock family.

Predeceased by his parents Allan and Louisa (nee Helm) Dorscht, son-in-law Craig Schumacher, brother Roy Dorscht and brother-in-law John Darechuk.

SCHNURR, Corrine Virginia (1940 - 2012) After a long debilitating struggle with Lewy Body dementia and Parkinson's, Corrine is finally at peace. She took her last breath at Pinehaven Nursing Home on April 14, 2012 at the age of 71. She joined the School Sisters of Notre Dame at a very young age and taught at many different schools in the area, but her most fulfilling time was when she went to the Missions in Peru. After much soul searching, Corrine left the convent after 25 years and undertook the huge task of going back to school to become a Registered Massage Therapist. Anyone who had the opportunity to have her healing hands massage them, can attest to how great she was at her chosen profession. Loving sister of Therese Hummel, Kitchener, Patricia Hummel (Tom), Waterloo, Raymond Schnurr (Cheryl), Kitchener, Edward Schnurr (Margaret), Kitchener and David Schnurr (Joyce), Damascus and brother-in-law Ken Stemmler (Shirley). By DAVE RIDER Toronto Sun Saying he was "just fed up" with life in Cambridge, Jim Detzler struck east to Toronto where he could meet other gay men and indulge his twin passions of sewing and cooking.

After some 30 years and a term in jail - where he was known as cross-dressing "Gracie" and met his accused murderer \emdash the 54-year-old was found drowned and beaten late Friday in another man's bathtub.

Police say he was killed late Wednesday in an apartment off Jarvis St. "This (murder) just shocked me," Detzler's brother-in-law, Don Orton, said yesterday from Cambridge, where the slain man's mother, brother and two sisters still live.

"About 30 years ago, Jim moved to Toronto where nobody knew him. He was just fed up with things here and wanted to be on his own," Orton said, adding his homosexuality was no secret.

Liked to sew and cook

"He loved the big city. He had friends down there where he was a seamstress and he cooked." Steven Todd Craig, 26, released on federal parole only three weeks ago, is charged with first-degree murder.

A lawyer called police with directions to the body of Detzler, an epileptic living on a disability pension in a Sherbourne St. apartment.

The pair met in Kingston Penitentiary and became lovers, said a former jailmate who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Acted like a woman Detzler, average height and stocky, was released about a year and a half ago after serving a five-year sentence for a non-fatal stabbing during a fight, said the ex-inmate.

He affected the mannerisms of a woman, was known to guards and other inmates as "Gracie," and spent much of his time behind bars sewing, said the ex-inmate and a Corrections Canada source.

"He wasn't a violent guy.

"He didn't deserve to go that way, no matter what," said the ex-inmate, who bumped into Detzler on the street after his release.

Orton said early yesterday he hadn't reached his wife to tell her about her brother's fate. She is in Florida visiting Disney World with their 13-year-old grandson who has deadly leukemia \emdash on a trip provided by the Make A Child Smile foundation.
