    Notes:

    J. Albert Gillespie, 72, prominent South Dumfries farmer, was killed this (Wednesday) morning when the crack C.P.R. diesel passenger stream-lined "Dayliner" was derailed at Dixie, near Toronto. Mr. Gillespie was aboard the train en route to Toronto to attend a Mutual Fire Underwriters' convention in his capacity as a director of the Ayr Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co.

    Injured Another director of the Ayr company, A. C. Becker, Roseville, was injured in the accident but, according to hospital reports this (Wednesday) afternoon, his condition is not serious.

    R. G. Bailey, RR 6, Galt, also a director, was believed by his wife to have been aboard the train, but he was not listed in the casualty list compiled by the Toronto Star.


    Miss Laurie Maus, company secretary-treasurer, who is attending the convention, left Monday night, instead of today, in order that she could spend Tuesday on other business in Toronto.

    Two Directors Travel C.N.R.

    Directors William D. Foulds and Chester Lovett, of the Paris district, also left for the convention this morning, but travelled by C.N.R. out of Paris.

    Train Strikes Truck

    According to information supplied by Toronto newsmen, the Dayliner, which consists only of two steel constructed passenger coaches, struck a truck at the Dixie crossing about 10 a.m. while travelling at a high speed. The tremendous impact derailed the train, leaving a twisted mass of steel along the right-of-way. Preliminary investigation revealed only one man dead, and others injured.

    Highly Respected Resident

    Mr. Gillespie, a highly respected member of the community, was born in North Dumfries, on the farm now occupied by his brother, William H. Gillespie He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gillespie. He moved to South Dumfries, two miles south of Ayr, more than years ago, where he became established as a very successful farmer. The late Mr. Gillespie was a valued member of Knox United Church, Ayr, where he was a member of the session and also the board of trustees. He had been on the board of directors of the Ayr Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company for many years, serving in several offices, including the presidency. Surviving are three sons, Robert J. of Hamilton, George T. of North Dumfries and Hugh at home; a daughter, Jenette, also at home, and several grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers and three sisters, as follows: W. H. Gillespie and Mrs. R. G. Ford, North Dumfries; Andrew Gillespie, Fort William; Mrs. Robert Teller and Mrs. Lillian Culham, Galt.

    William H. Gillespie Passes

    William Howard Gillespie, RR.5, East River Road, Galt, died Thursday at his homestead farm, Rose Vega. He was 81. Mr. Gillespie was born on the farm where he died. He had resided there all his life. He was a member of First United Church, Galt, where he served as church elder for many years; at present he was an honorary elder. He was warden of Waterloo County in 1946 and had served as reeve of North Dumfries Township 1945-46. He had also served on the township council and was past president of South Waterloo Agricultural Society. He was the original chairman of the agricultural division of the Galt Board of Trade and was township representative on the Galt High School Board. He was also past president of the North Dumfries Plowmen's Association and also of the South Dumfries Farmers Club. He was predeceased by a daughter, Jean Isabel. Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Ford; one son, John H. of RR 5, Galt; two daughters, Mrs. Roy (Eleanor) Hilborn, of RR 5, Galt, and Mrs. John (Mary) Leeds of Guelph; two sisters, Mrs. R. G. (Mary) Ford, RR 4 Galt, and Mrs. Lillian Culham of Galt, and seven grandchildren. Funeral service was conducted Sunday with interment in Mount View Cemetery, Galt.

    Robert Gillespie

    Robert John (Bob) Gillespie (B.A., Sc. P. Eng.) passed away at the Henderson General Hospital, Hamilton, on September 14, 1999. He was in his 84th year. Beloved husband of Kathleen; father of Joan of Toronto, Paul and his wife Sherry of Toronto; and Ronald of Hamilton. Predeceased by daughter Carol Anne. Son of the late John Albert and Mary Gillespie of Ayr. Brother of George Gillespie and his wife Margaret of Ayr and Jennette Gillespie of Toronto. Brother of the late Hugh and Jean Gillespie. Mr. Gillespie was retired from Canadian Oxygen Ltd. and was well known in the welding industry, having served in Toronto, Windsor and Hamilton for a period of over 40 years. He was an active member of St. Stephen on-the-Mount Anglican Church and served on the church council for several years. Funeral service was held Friday, September 17th at St. Stephen on-the-Mount Anglican Church. Cremation followed. Interment later, in Ayr Cemetery.

    Hugh C. Gillespie Passes

    A well-known district man, Hugh C. Gillespie, RR 3, Ayr, passed away in K-W Hospital on Sunday. Mr. Gillespie, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gillespie, was born and lived all his life on the Gillespie home farm just south of Ayr. He was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. Surviving besides his wife, the former Jean Keith, Is a son Keith, at home; a sister Jennette of Toronto; and brother a Robert of Hamilton and George of RR 3, Ayr. Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the William Kipp Funeral Home, Paris. Rev. D.E. Willis of Ayr officiated. Interment in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were Douglas Maus, Arthur Faus, Alden Cochrane, Bill Little, Jim Leonard, and Bruce Robinson. Flower bearers were John and Ronald Gillespie, Ross Marshall, Edward Irwin, Bill Poll and Tom Keith.

She was born in North Dumfries Township, 84 years ago, a daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Ford) Gillespie. Eleanor was a member of the New Apostolic Church, New Hamburg, a member of the 39 Plus Club, New Hamburg, a member of the Haysville Sunshine Club and a life member of the Laura Rose Women's Institute, Cambridge. She enjoyed quilting as her hobby. Beloved wife of Roy Elton Hilborn, who predeceased her August 29, 1994. Loving mother of Anne & Bruce Catton of Paris. Ever remembered by her grandchildren, Scott and Tyler; and her great-granddaughter Jasmine. Dear sister of John (Jack) & Audrey Gillespie of Cambridge, and Mary Leeds of R. R. # 5, Guelph. Predeceased by her son, Donald James in 1972 and a sister Isabel and a brother-in-law, John Leeds. Friends & relatives may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, on Sunday, from 2-5 p.m. and where the funeral service will be held, on Monday, May 30, 2005, at 2 p.m., with Michael Chapman officiating.     Passed away peacefully, at Stirling Heights Long Term Care Centre, Cambridge, on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, in his 81st year. Beloved husband of Audrey Knapp. Loving father of Brian and his wife Pam of Cambridge, Helen Martin and her husband Dennis of West Montrose and Sandra Cressman and her husband Keith of Elora. Also survived by his loving grandchildren; Kyle, Katrina, Angela, Lauren, Emma, Shannon and Tracey. Survived by his sister, Mary Leeds of Elora and predeceased by his parents, William and Elizabeth Gillespie and his sister Eleanor Hillborn. Jack was born in Galt, on March 15, 1930 and had lived in the area all his life. An active member of First United Church and his community. Jack was a Holstein Judge, under the Rose Vega prefix, he was the recipient of two Master Breeder Shields, President of Ontario Holstein, and President of United Breeders' Director on the National Holstein Board. The family will receive friends at Coutts Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge on Friday, September 3, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Private graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2010, followed by a Memorial Service at First United Church, 15 Wellington Street, Cambridge, at 2: 30 p.m.

    Margery Evelyn Perry passed away peacefully at Park Lane Terrace, Paris, on Wednesday, March 19, 2003.

    Margery was the daughter of Robert G. and Mary (Gillespie) Ford, who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her first husband, John K. Rutherford in 1952 and her second husband, Fred W. Perry in 1981.

    Survived by her sister, Marion Edgar, and her brother, Robert E. Ford and Marion; nieces and nephews: Jean Fraser, Larry Ford, Nancy Zincone, Carole and Lyle Edgar; great-nieces and nephews: Leanne McComb, Julie Firminger, Scott and Ryan Ford, Rachel, Clair and Michael Zincone and Greg, Rose, Mamie, Sarah and Emily Forte and Joan Edgar; great-great-nieces and nephews: Megan and Logan McComb and Tacoma and Trey Firminger; stepdaughter Pauline Williamson and stepsons: Jim, Jack and Frank Perry.

    Margery grew up on the family farm in North Dumfries, and after John Rutherford's death, trained as a Registered Nursing Assistant and was employed at the Galt Memorial Hospital and Cambridge Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1986. For 31 years she enjoyed nursing. Her retirement years have been spent at Marsdale Retirement Home.

    Mrs. Perry rested at Corbett Funeral Home, Cambridge where the funeral service was held on Saturday, March 22, 2003 at 1: 00 pm, Rev. Merritt officiating.

    Interment Ayr Cemetery.

Marion grew up on the Ford farm, Greenfield Road and spent 49 years on the Edgar farm on Alps Road before moving to the Village Condominiums in Ayr. She was very active in many areas including Knox United Church, the Ladies Bowling League and various cards clubs. She was a dear friend and supporter of many. Friends will be received at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, 183 Northumberland St. Ayr, on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 (today) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to be held in the chapel on Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at 2: 00 p.m. with Rev.
