    Fatal Accident in Dumfries

A very melancholy accident occurred in the Township of North Dumfries on Monday night last, whereby an old and most respected resident, Mrs. George Findlater, met with her death. Mrs. Findlater was a widow, and resided with her two sons Robert and John on the old homestead; and being nervous during thunderstorms, she arose from her bed during the one on Sabbath night, apparently intending to go to the front door. It is supposed, however, that she mistook the door, and unfortunately opened the one that led to the cellar, down the stairs leading to which she appears to have fallen with great violence. One of the sons heard a noise, as if his mother had fallen over or upset a chair, and arose to see what was the matter; and when passing the cellar door he heard a slight moaning at the foot of the stairs leading thereto. He immediately descended to see what was wrong; and was horrified to find his mother lying perfectly insensible at the foot of the stairs. She was immediately carried up and put to bed, and the best of medical aid sought, but the summons had come, and without ever regaining consciousness, she quietly passed away shortly after 4 o'clock am on Monday. The deceased lady was in the 74th year of her age at the time of her sad death, and has resided on the farm on which she died for a period of nearly 40 years. She leaves a family of four sons and three daughters. She was a native of Aberdeenshire, Scotland; and during her long residence in Dumfries she earned the esteem and affection of all with whom she was brought into contact. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, the attendance there at being very large. Her remains were interred in the new Cemetery at Ayr.

    Notes:

Death of Mrs. Henry Manson - Regret was experienced b a wide circle of friends in this locality on Sunday morning, when it became known that Mrs. Henry Manson, one of the most beloved and respected citizens of North Dumfries had passed away late Saturday evening. Deceased had only been ill for a short period and, although in her 81st year, she was still active and her demise was unexpected. Born in Scotland, Mrs. Manson came to America with her parents when less than a year old. After living in the United States for seven years, the family moved to Canada and located on the old homestead to the south-east of Ayr now occupied by her brother, John Findlater. On her marriage to the late Henry Manson, who predeceased her 12 years ago, she removed to her late residence, lot 23, concession 7, North Dumfries, where she lived until her death. Mrs. Manson was one of the oldest members of Stanley Street Presbyterian Church and always took an active part in church work. She was of a kindly and moving disposition and, as one of the pioneers of the district, exerted a large influence on the growing generation, which helped to make the Township of North Dumfries one of the most substantial and progressive in Ontario today. There survive her one daughter and four sons: Miss Bessie, at home; William, in Missouri; Robert, in Nebraska; Lyon, in California and Joh, at home. She is also survived by two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Pipe, of California; Mrs. John Renwick, of Clifford; William of Belmore; Alexander, of Wingham and John, on the homestead. The funeral, which took place Tuesday afternoon to Ayr cemetery was very largely attended, many friends and relatives from a distance being present of tender their last respects. Among the relatives present were: William Manson, Missouri; Robert Manson, Nebraska; Mrs. John Renwick, Clifford; Wm. Findlater, Belmore; Alex, Findlater, Wingham. The services were in charge of Rev. Demise of Robt. H. Manson

Passes away while en route to Ayr on a visit - The community was startled and grieved on Monday to learn of the death of Robert H. Manson of Grant, Nebraska, brother of our esteemed citizen, Mr. John A. Manson. About a month ago the deceased started on a motoring trip to Ayr, accompanied by his wife and daughter. On reaching Davenport, Iowa, where they visited with some friends for a few days, Mr. Manson was suddenly taken ill and had to be removed to the hospital, where he died on Sunday morning. The body was sent on to Ayr, arriving here by C. P. R. on Monday afternoon, accompanied by the family, also a brother, Mr. Wm. G. Manson of Deloge, Missouri, and Mr. and Mrs. C. Johns of Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Manson, who was in his 52nd year, was born, on the homestead near Ayr and went west some 30 years since, where he engaged in railroad work for a while, but was latterly in the service of a bank, and had visited here on several occasions in recent years, He was twice married, his first wife being Polly Johns of Ayr, who died at Grant, Neb., a few years later, and whose remains lie in the cemetery there. The present Mrs. Manson was a Mrs. Logan, residing in the west. The family started east on a joyous holiday trip, but the return home will naturally be saddened by the absence of the head of the family, once more illustrating the truth of the axiom ''Man proposes, God disposes." Three brothers and a sister survive. They are: John A., and Miss Bessie, Ayr, Wm. G., Deloge, Mo., and A. Lyon, San Barnardino, Can. Interment was made in the Ayr cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, the funeral taking pace from the old homestead, lot 33, con. 7, North Dumfries, and the service being conducted by Rev. J. J. Brown. Notes:

Ayr Reeve Dies Suddenly - Shocked and almost unbelieving, the citizens of Ayr learned Saturday morning of the death of their reeve, Lyon Findlater, 70, who succumbed to a heart attack during the night. One of the village's most popular figures, Mr. Findlater had been busy on Friday supervising road work, and later in the afternoon tending the Ayr Cemetery. While at this task he became ill and returned home. Late in the night his condition became acute and he passed away about 1: 30 a.m. Saturday. There had been no previous indication of ill health for Mr. Findlater, who had sat at the head of the council table only four days previous discussing village affairs in which he anticipated, taking an active part. Native of North Dumfries Mr. Findlater was born in North Dumfries, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Findlater. He was married 43 years ago to the former Mamie Birley, who survives. For many years he farmed on the Wrigley's. Road, before coming to Ayr eight years ago

    Served on School Board

While in the township Mr. Findlater showed a deep interest in community affairs, for which he found an outlet by serving on the Wrigley's school board. He was also secretary-treasurer of the former Township School Area No. 2. For many years he was superintendent of the Ayr-Wrigley's county road.

    Third Term as Reeve

Upon removal to Ayr, Mr. Findlater accepted nomination to Ayr Council, and served continuously until his death. He was filling the reeve's chair for his third term this year.

    Admirable Approach to Council Work

Mr. Findlater approached his municipal duties with a frank and unbiased attitude. His opinions were always openly stated, but he was a willing listener to the views of his colleagues and the ratepayers. One of his outstanding characteristics was his innate kindliness. In all his years on council he was never known to be vindictive or unfair. Any necessary unpleasant decisions he was forced to make were always softened with a smile.

    Cemetery Board Official

Mr. Findlater had been the efficient secretary-treasurer of the Ayr Cemetery Company and cemetery caretaker for several years.

    Socially Active

Socially, he was a valued member of the Ayr curling and bowling clubs and of Ayr Masonic Lodge. He seldom missed, a euchre party or other entertainments sponsored by local organizations. - Supporter of Hockey - Mr. Findlater was an ardent hockey fan, and in his capacity as reeve and Community Centre Board chairman he always gave favorable consideration to requests of the Ayr clubs. Whenever a hockey playoff game fell on a council meeting night he pushed the business with alacrity to permit his attendance at part of the contest. Politically, Mr. Findlater had Liberal views and was an official of the constituency association. He was a faithful member of Knox United Church.

    The. Survivors

Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Mrs. Henry Fetter (Mary), Ayr, and a brother, Roy, of Galt. Five grandchildren also survive.
