    Notes:

    Roth. -- Benjamin S., son of the late Nickolas F. Roth and Anna Schlegel, was born at Wayland, Iowa, June 9, 1869; passed away at his home, New Hamburg, Ont., Jan. 12, 1949; aged 79 y. 7 m. 3 d. His parents died when he was quite young and at the age of fourteen he moved to the home of his uncle (John F. Roth) at New Hamburg. There he grew to manhood and there resided, on the same farm, until death. In his youth he accepted Christ and was a member of the Steinman A.M. Church. On March 8, 1893, he was united in marriage to Barbara Lichti, who predeceased him in August, 1942. Two sons and one daughter also predeceased him. Surviving are 4 sons and one daughter (John, Petersburg, Ont.; Nickolas, New Hamburg, Ont.; Mabel - Mrs. Melvin Bender, Ailsa Craig, Ont.; Lorne, Tavistock,Ont.; and Alvin, on the homestead), 23 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one sister (Mrs. Mary Troyer, Shickley, Nebr.), one stepsister (Mrs. Katie Schwartzentruber, Zurich, Ont.), and a large number of other relatives and friends. Eight weeks before his death he suffered a stroke which left himi helpless and speechless. He bore his affliction patiently. Funeral services were in charge of M. O. Jantzi, Ben Gingerich spoke at the home, and Peter Nafziger and Amos Swartzentruber at the church. Text: Heb. 4: 9. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

    In Loving Memory Entered Into Rest At New Hamburg on Wednesday, January 12th, 1949 Benjamin S. Roth Aged: 79 years, 7 months and 3 days. The Funeral Will take place from his late residence on Saturday, January 15th, with service at the home at 1.30 o'clock p.m., followed by a memorial service at Steinman's A.-M. Church, and interment in the adjoining cemetery. No one heard the footsteps of the angel drawing near, Who took from earth to heaven, the one we loved so dear; No one knows the silent heartache, only one who lost can tell Of the grief that's borne in silence for the one we loved so well.

    Roth, John L., son of Benjamin and Barbara (Lichti) Roth, was born in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Feb. 12, 1897; died suddenly at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Sept. 19, 1971; aged 74 y. 7 m. 7 d. On Mar. 15, 1923, he was married to Matilda Schwartzentruber, who survives. Also surviving are 3 sons (Arthur, Vernon, and Clare), 3 daughters (Mildred - Mrs. Lawrence Hauder, Martha - Mrs. Jack Miller, and Beatrice - Mrs. John Hoist), 22 grandchildren, one brother (Alvin), and one sister (Mable - Mrs. Milton Litwiller). He was a member of the St. Agatha Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held Sept. 22, in charge of Gerald Schwartzentruber and Elmer Schwartzentruber.

    BADEN-John L. Roth of 86 Hillview St., died Sunday at K-W Hospital Kitchener. He was 74.

    Born in New Hamburg, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Roth. He had farmed in the Petersburg area until retiring to Baden 11 years ago. He was a member of the St. Agatha Mennonite Church.

    He was predeceased by four brothers, one sister and one granddaughter.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Matilda Schwartzentruber, whom he married in 1924; three sons, Arthur in Colorado, Vernon of Stratford and Clare of Petersburg; three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Mildred) Hauder of Nebraska, Mrs. Jack (Martha) Miller of Wooster, Ohio and Mrs. John (Beatrice) Holst, of New Dundee; one brother, Alvin of RR 2, New Hamburg; one sister, Mrs. Milton (Mabel) Litwiller of Tavistock and 22 grandchildren.

    The body will be at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home until noon on Wednesday when removal will be made to the church in St. Agatha for service at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Gerald Schwartzentruber will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

    Donations to the Western Ontario Mennonite Mission Board will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

    LORNE L. ROTH

    Lorne L. Roth of New Hamburg died suddenly at his home Tuesday May 11. He was 59.

    Born May 7, 1912 in New Hamburg, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin S. Roth and had lived in New Hamburg most of his life. He was a member of the New Hamburg Conservative Mennonite Church.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Irene Gascho; two sons, Franklin, R.R. 3 Kippen, and James, at home; four daughters, Mary, at home, Mrs. Ned (Marcella) Graber of Red Lake, Mrs. Paul (Fern) Huber, R.R. 1 Wellesley, and Mrs. Marvin (Esther) Good, R.R. 2 New Hamburg; two brothers, John of Baden, and Alvin, R.R. 2 New Hamburg; one sister, Mrs. Milton (Mabel) Litwiller, Tavistock and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers and one sister.

    The body rested at the Omand Funeral Home until removal was made to the New Hamburg Conservative Mennonite Church where Rev. Moses Baer conducted a service at 2:30 p.m. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.

    Of Route 2, New Hamburg, passed away at the K-W Hospital, Sunday, Jan. 2, born in New Hamburg, Nov. 3, 1917, 54 years ago. An employee of the Ontario Department of Highways and a member of the New Hamburg Conservative Mennonite Church. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin S. Roth.

    Surviving are his wife, Olivia Roth; four sons, Wayne, Route 1, Brucefield; Robert, Rojer, Peter and two daughters, Shirley and Deloris, all at home; one sister, Mrs. Milton (Mabel) Litwiller, Tavistock. Predeceased by five brothers and one sister.

    Resting at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home, New Hamburg, until noon on Wednesday. Memorial services will be held at the New Hamburg Conservative Mennonite Church at 3 p.m. The Rev. Elmer Grove and Earl Koch will officiate. Temporary entombment at Riverside cemetery, New Hamburg.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

    Schwartzentruber.--On Feb. 15, 1927, Leah, wife of Moses Schwartzentruber died in her home at Baden, Ont., after a short illness; aged 31 y. 3 m. She was the daughter of Christ and Annie Lichti. She was baptized and received into the A. M. Church in her youth. On Dec. 1, 1914, she was united in marriage to Moses Schwartzentruber. This union was blest with 1 son and 2 daughters. She leaves her husband, 1 daughter (Violet), 1 son (Elmer), mother, father, 1 brother (Willie Lichti) 1 sister (Edna--Mrs. Chris. Breneman), and one aged grandmother. One daughter and one brother have gone before. She was kind and generous to her associates. "A place is vacant in the home which never can be filled." We deeply feel our loss. But we have the sweet promise that some day we can meet again. Funeral services were held Feb. 18, at the home by Bro. Peter Litwiller, at the church by Bros. Dan. Lebold, and Dan. Steinman in German and by Peter Nafziger in English. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

    LICHTY, William (Bill) -- On Thursday, Dec. 6, 1979, at K-W Hospital, Kitchener, Bill Lichty, of 288 Snyders Rd. E., Baden, aged 80 years. He was a member of Steinman Mennonite Church, Route 2, Baden. Beloved husband of the former Beatrice Jantzi, whom he married January 24, 1933; dear father of Glendon of Baden, Keith of St. Catherines, Dorothy (Mrs. Lee Holst) of Harriston, Delphine (Mrs. Leonard Schwartzentruber) of New Hamburg and Gloria (Mrs. Sanford Bender) of Route 1, Tavistock. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Lucy Overholt in 1925, his parents, the late Christian Lichty and the former Annie Roth, one brother in infancy and two sisters Leah (Mrs. Moses Schwartzentruber) and Edna (Mrs. Christ Brenneman). The late Mr. Lichty is resting at the Omand- Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg after 7 p.m. this evening and until noon Sunday, Dec. 9, when removal will be made to Steinman Mennonite Church for funeral service at 2: 30 p.m., with Rev Vernon Zehr officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.

    Mildred May Hauder was born on May 8, 1925, in Petersburg, Ontario, Canada to John L. and Matilda (Swartzentruber) Roth and passed away on Good Friday April 15, 2022, in Seward, NE at the age of 96.

    Mildred attended grade school and as a young girl accepted Christ as her personal savior and was baptized. On September 28, 1946, she was united in marriage to Ernest Roth in St Agatha, Ontario, Canada. However, Mildred found herself widowed too soon as she was left to mourn the tragic loss of her husband in a pick-up/train accident 10 months later. Along with raising her daughter, Sharon, Mildred worked in a doctor's home for a period of time and later was a housekeeper and nanny. She was blessed with a second marriage to Lawrence Hauder on June 19, 1965, and moving to the United States and residing in Milford, NE on the farm and later in town.

    Mildred was a member of the East Fairview Mennonite Church, WMSC and volunteered at the Et Cetera Shop in Seward. She enjoyed being with family, sewing, quilting, gardening, cooking, taking trips to Canada and spending winter is Sarasota, FL.

    Survivors include her children and spouses, Sharon and Bill Stauffer, Milford, Carley Roth, Lincoln, Betty and Lowell Hertzler, Harrisonburg, VA, Sue Ann and Roy Perry, Hinton, VA.     ART ROTH, 92, of Julesburg, entered into the Lord's rest on June 26, 2023, surrounded by his family, at the Sedgwick County Hospital in Julesburg.

    Arthur John Roth was born on December 24, 1930, near Petersburg, Ontario, Canada, to Matilda Swartzendruber Roth and John L. Roth. Growing up on the family farm near the village of Petersburg, he attended grade school until the eighth grade when he was needed to assist with farm work. At the age of eleven, Art recognized his need for a Savior and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior during a church revival. He was baptized in 1941 at the Steinmann Mennonite Church in Baden, Ontario, Canada.

    While residing in Canada, Art worked as a grocery bagger at Loblaws Super Market in Kitchener, Ontario. He later found employment at a local sawmill and a transport company. Actively involved in his church, Art served as a Sunday School teacher, Song Leader, Janitor, and youth leader.

    In the summer of 1953, Art embarked on a life-changing adventure with the Christian Laymen's Tent Evangelism team based in Orrville, Ohio. He traveled extensively across the United States, from Oregon to New York, and throughout Ontario, Canada. Art served as Assistant to the tent Manager during his time with the team.

    Passed away peacefully at his residence, The Village of Winston Park, Kitchener, on Friday, July 28, 2017. Clare was the son of the late John and Matilda Roth (Swartzentruber) and was born on the home farm in Petersburg, Ontario 79 Years ago.

    Clare will always be missed and cherished by his daughters Michelle (Robert) Popma and Alyson (Sam) Wilson, his grandchildren; Joseph, Michael, Katelynn, Daniel, Spencer, Nicholas, Zachari and Matthew. He will be remembered by his brothers and sisters; Arthur (Marjorie) Roth of Colorado, Vernon (Betty) Roth of Breslau and Mildred Hauder of Nebraska.

    Clare is predeceased by his daughter Connie Lou Roth, sisters Martha and husband Jack Miller and Beatrice and husband John Holst as well as by brother in law Laurence Hauder.

    Clare retired as a Manager of Zehrs at the age of 55 and spent much of his time playing golf, a game he grew to love all his life. Clare was an Optimist Club member.

    Cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to a time of memorial visiting on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 5 \endash 8 p.m. at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron Street, New Hamburg. A Memorial Service will take place on Thursday, August 3, 2017 in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 a.m. followed by a time of refreshment and fellowship.

Grace was an enthusiastic, positive person who enjoyed people and extended hospitality to all. She will be greatly missed. He was born in Wilmot Township, Waterloo County on August 13, 1934 a son of the late Melvin W. and Mabel (Roth) Bender. Gerry had worked at Canada Sandpaper in Plattsville for twenty five years; had been a long time member of Drumbo Men's Choir; was a member of Tavistock Mennonite Church and a former member of Innerkip United Church and was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife, the former Verna Mae Brenneman, whom he married on June 23, 1956; four children, Gwen and husband Neal Hallock, Gayle and husband Richard "Dick" Ernst, all of Innerkip, Glenna and husband Paul Roth of Tavistock, Greg and wife Karen Bender of RR#6, Woodstock; thirteen grand-children; two great-granddaughters; one brother, John and wife Janet Bender of Ailsa Craig; three sisters, Elaine and husband Dan Zehr of Abbotsford, B.C., Janice and husband Aden Brubacher of Elmira, Darlene Ropp of London; brothers-in-law, Ken Schwartzentruber of New Hamburg, Jerry Ropp of Edmonton, AB, and several "Brenneman" brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by sisters, Grace Schwartzentruber, Mary and husband Robert Johnson and Doreen Ropp; brother, Ray Bender and brother-in-law, John Ropp. Relatives and friends will be received in the Francis Funeral Home, 77 Woodstock Street North, Tavistock on Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held in Tavistock Mennonite Church on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 1: 30 p.m. The Rev. Paul Adams, assisted by the Rev. Maya Landell, will officiate. Cremation will follow.     Bender, Ray Noah, son of Mabel and Melvin W. Bender, Ailsa Craig, Ont., was born at New Hamburg, Ont., July 23, 1939; was instantly killed while at work on road construction about two miles from home on July 16, 1957; aged 17 y. 11 m. 23 d. He leaves his sorrowing parents, 2 brothers, and 6 sisters (Grace-Mrs. Kenneth Schwartzentruber, and Elaine-Mrs. Daniel Zehr, both of Goshen, Ind.; Mary, Janice, Doreen, and Darlene, at home; Gerald at London; and John, at home), and his grandfather (Noah S. Bender, New Hamburg). He accepted Christ as his Saviour and united with the Nairn A. M. Church in 1949. His pleasing personality and smile for everyone is greatly missed in the home, church, and community.     BELK, Mary Barbara Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, April 29, 2016 at her residence, The Maples Home for Seniors, Tavistock. Mary was born 80 years ago in Wilmot Township and was the daughter of the late Lorne and Irene (Gascho) Roth.
