Henry Alteman

The jewelry and watch and clock repairing profession has an old and thoroughly experienced representative in Mr. Alteman. He was born in the town of Waterloo, where he learned his trade with the late Benjamin Bowman. After he had conducted a shop in that town for two years, he came to Wellesley village. He was then twenty-one years of age. He had an encouraging patronage from the start, being located here for a period of twenty-two years. In 1878 he was married to Martha, daughter of Mr. George Glebe, of Lisbon, the latter being now in the 80th year of his age. They had five children, all of whom are living. The mother died December 15, 1896, of consumption. In 1898, Mr. Alteman was again married, his second wife being Miss Hattie, daughter of Mr. A. B. Smith, a prominent school teacher, at present engaged at Amulree. Mr. Alteman is a careful and economical business man, and has an enviable reputation as a jeweler. He owns two fine dwelling houses, and the building now occupied by Mr. John Kinsinger as a hardware store. He is a member of the Lutheran (Canada Synod) church, and has been for nine years a member of the Board of School Trustees. He has a branch at Linwood in charge of Mr. V. R. Berlet, where watch and clock repairing will be punctually attended to. His display of watches, clocks and jewelry here is a fine one. He is an expert in his line, and his reputation for doing out repair work in a first class scientific manner is too well known to need further comment from the writer. Mr. Alteman is agent here for the Economical Fire Insurance Co., of Berlin, a position he has held 18 years.

Pauline was a seamstress and dressmaker, a talent which she put to good use following the untimely death of her husband, a diabetic, 10 Feb 1909, which left her with three young children to raise. The shock of her husband's death must have been dreadfully compounded when her middle child, Charlie, died of scarlet fever a few days later. It was believed he got the scarlet fever from the undertaker who had just come from removing a deceased person who had succombed to the disease. There were a trips to Waterloo to visit her family, but by all accounts of her daughter, Ann Agnes, "Auntie Ann", many years later, they were infrequent and not filled with the great fun people usually recall from their youth. Pauline Alteman was George Duncan Barr's second wife. His first wife, Charlotte E. Panter, died with no issue. (Information from her daughter, Anne Agnes [Barr] Jarvis)

ALTEMAN.-In Wellesley, on Friday. June, 19, 1908 at 9: 05 p.m. Eda Margaret Alteman, daughter of Mr. Henry Alteman, aged16 years, two months and twenty- five days. Miss Eda was an unusually bright girl and a favorite in the village. About a year ago she was taken ill with rheumatism since which time she has been an extreme sufferer in spite of the best care and attention. The funeral occurred on Monday afternoon, a very large number of sorrowing friends attending to show their sympathy with the bereaved family. Among the many floral offerings was a beautiful wreath from the Union Sabbath School, of which the deceased young lady has been a member since her infancy. The pallbearers were Harvey Schaub, Ed Koehler, Fred Froehlich, Oscar Ottmann, Reinhold Yent and John Stahle, all of whom were her school mates.

Gertrude Mary Alteman

Gertrude Mary Alteman of Hanover. who was born in New Hamburg, died Sunday at the Hanover Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Alteman and came to Hanover from Kitchener 10 years ago.

She was the last surviving member of her family and is survived by several cousins.

Temporary entombment was in the Hanover cemetery chapel with burial to take place later in Waterloo.

Margaret Faulhafer

WELLESLEY. Miss Margaret Faulhafer, 31, died Tuesday evening at her home here, after a month's illness following a heart attack. She was born in Wellesley on Aug 19, 1907, a daughter of William Faulhafer and the late Mrs. Faulhafer. She was a member of St. Pauls Missouri Lutheran church.

She is survived by her father.

The funeral is being held this Friday with private service at her residence at 2.30 p.m. followed by public services at St. Paul's Lutheran Missouri church. Rev. C. A. Kramer is officiating. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.
