John Thomas Underwood

The death occurred at St. Mary's Hospital at five o'clock last night of Mr. John Thomas Underwood, aged 69 years, three months, and 10 days. The deceased has been in failing health for the last two or three months. In religion the deceased was a member of Calvary Evangelical church. He was born in Wellesley Township on November 2nd, 1863. He was predeceased by his wife some seven years ago.

The late Mr. Underwood is survived by six sons, Obal of Windsor, Ira of Kitchener, Oscar of Kitchener, Harry of Waterloo, Milo, Kitchener and Lloyd of Toronto, and by one daughter, Mrs. Edwin G. Sahli, city. Two brothers, Edward Underwood and William Underwood, both of Bridgeport, and one sister, Mrs. I. Thomas, Kitchener survive.

The funeral will be held with a private service on Sunday afternoon at 2: 30 o'clock from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sahli, 65 Glasgow Street, to Calvary Evangelical Church where a public service will be held at three o'clock. Interment will be made in Woodland Cemetery. The remains will be at the Kitchener Furniture Company Funeral Home until Saturday noon after which removal will take place to the home of Mrs. Sahli, 65 Glasgow Street.

UNDERWOOD, Ira S. At the K-W Hospital, on Monday, Feb. 9, 1976, after a brief illness, Ira S. Underwood, of 247 Franklin St. N., formerly of Walter Street, aged 92 years.

Mr. Underwood was born near Bloomingdale, son of the late John Underwood and the former Lavina Saltzbury. A resident of the Twin City area all of his life and a member of Calvary United Church. Mr. Under- wood was a letter carrier with the Kitchener Post Office for many years.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Margaret Strub, in April, 1951; by a daughter, Mrs. Grace Ringle in 1945 and by two sisters and four brothers. Surviving are three sons, E. J. (Buck), Route 1, Mar, W. I. (Bill), J. E. (Jack), both of Kitchener; two daughters, Marvel (Mrs. Harry Armitage), Meaford and Marguerite (Mrs. Paul Colombo), Waterloo; a brother Milo Underwood of Kitchener; 16 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; four great- great-grandchildren also survive.

Friends may call at the Ratz- Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, Funeral and committal service in the chapel Wednesday, at 3 p.m., with Rev. Bruce E. Seebach officiat- ing. Interment Woodland cemetery.

Oscar Underwood - Oscar Underwood of 67 Glasgow St., died today at St. Mary's Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 82. Born near Bloomingdale, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John T. Underwood. He had lived in Kitchener for the past 70 years and was employed by Uniroyal Ltd., for 26 years before retiring in 1951. Surviving besides his wife, the former Elizabeth Gerber who he married Sept. 5, 1907 in Kitchener, are: four sons, Lorne of Kitchener, Howard and Robert, both of Waterloo, and James who is serving with the Canadian Armed Forces in Victoria, B.C.; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Elsie) Moogk of Waterloo and Mildred of Kitchener; two brothers, Ira and Milo, both of Kitchener; a sister, Mrs. Edwin (Ina) Sahli of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Ralph G., who was killed overseas in 1944, four brothers and a sister. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where the funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. conducted by Dr. J. V. Dahms, minister of Calvary United Church. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery, Waterloo.

Clayton Elmer Underwood played baseball for a championship team. Then his country sent him into combat.

He helped chase the enemy out of France, only to die on Nov. 11, 1918, the day the First World War ended.

Did he learn of victory before his wounds killed him? We can only speculate. But we do know this: Clayton was the last local soldier to die while the Great War still raged.

Canada conscripted him into the infantry after running out of volunteers. Thus compelled, he did his duty.

Mrs. Walter Klem - Following a lengthy illness, Mrs. Walter Klem, 58, of 142 Guelph Rd., Bridgeport, died today at K-W Hospital. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Underwood, she was born Dec. 24, 1896 in Bridgeport. She was a member of the Emmanuel Evangelical UB Church. Her marriage to Walter Klem, who survives, took place in Kitchener, June 23, 1917. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Muriel) Nauman and Mrs. Thomas (Ferne) Woods of Waterloo and Patricia of Bridgeport; two brothers, Herman and Wilfred of Bridgeport; one sister, Mrs. Leah Cooper of Flint, Mich., and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home and burial will be in Bridgeport Memorial Cemetery. Rev. C. B. Hackendorn will be in charge of the service. The body is at the funeral home.

Mr. Thomas was born Nov. 3, 1891, at Bloomingdale. He was a lifelong resident of the Twin City area.

He was employed with Hogg Fuel and Supply Co. Ltd, for 35 years prior to his retirement, in 1958. He was a member of First Mennonite Church and served overseas in the First World War with the Canadian 133rd Infantry Battalion and attained the rank of sergeant.

He was predeceased by his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Thomas, and his wife, the former Clara Shantz; two sons, Edward and William and one daughter, Clara, three brothers, Harold, Warren and Arthur and one sister, Mrs. Albert (Jessie) Moser.

Surviving are five sons, Walter, Kenneth and Grant, all of Kitchener and Milton and Russell, both of Ayr; three daughters, Mrs. John (Lillian) Neilly of Kitchener, Mrs. Edward (Barbara) Giilck of Conestogo and Mrs. Harry (Mary Lou) Falkenstern of Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Jane) Gies of New Dundee and Mrs. Agnes Livoch of Detroit, 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

WALTER A. THOMAS 1928 - 2009 Walter passed away, peacefully, at his home, on Sunday, September 27, 2009, in his 82nd year. Walter was predeceased by his wife, Barbara (nee Weaver) on June 16, 1989; his parents, Russell and Clara (Shantz) Thomas; brothers, Milton and Russell and two infant brothers, Edward and William; infant sister, Clara; brother-in-law, John Neilly; and sister-in-law, Elspeth (nee Gladstone). Survived by his children, David (Gerri), Heather (Terry), and Gary; grandson, Shawn (Jackie); and great-grandchildren, Maddison and Wesley. Also survived by brothers, Ken (Mary), Grant (Laura) and sisters, Lillian, Barbara (Eddie), and Marylou (Harry). Walter was a longtime service employee of J.M. Schneider. Relatives and friends are invited to share memories of Walter during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday, October 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Friday, October 2, 2009 at 9:30 a.m., followed by interment at Memory Gardens, Breslau. Russell Thomas

The death occurred peacefully, with his family by his side, at the Willett Hospital, Paris on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 of Russell Howard Thomas of Ayr. He was in his 74^th year.

He was born in Kitchener and was son of the late Clara Mabel Shantz and Russell Arthur Thomas.

Mr. Thomas resided with his brother Milton and his family on Piper Street, Ayr for the past 53 years. He was a retired employee of Uniroyal.

He was a special uncle to Bonnie and George Bell of Woodstock, Bob at home, Paul of Cambridge, Gail and Frans Michiels, Diana and Larry Struthers, Ted and Cathy, all of Ayr; great uncle of Terri, Mark, Renee, Jo-Anne, Rebecca, David, Jordan, Ruth, Ben, Jennifer, Susie, Jonathan, Kristin, Karly and great-great uncle of 9; dear brother of Walter, Ken and Mary, Lil Neilly, Mary Lou and Harry Falkenstern, all of Kitchener, Barb and Ed Giilck of Cologne and Grant of BC.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Elspeth Thomas.

Cremation has taken place.

A private family memorial service was held at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home.
