Letter received by Charles Lavender Jr from Bert Lavender:

"Just a few lines to answer yours which I got the other day. I was glad to hear from you. The Germans broke through the line last night and advanced three miles until reinforcements came up and they were driven back again, but it cost a lot of lives to do it. They came through where the French were and of course the Germans used gas shells and bombs filled with gas and chemicals. But this morning they are back where they started from. There are about 200 casualties in this battalion, so you see it cost something to drive them back. I haven't heard how the other battalions fared, but suppose they are the same as ours. I think this will be all for this time. Write again. Good-Bye. From Bert"
