Wellesley's Oldest Medical Practitioner Passes Away on Monday Morning.

Dr Wm Morton, one of the oldest and most successful medical practitioners in Waterloo County passed away on Monday morning at his home in Wellesley in his 58th year. He settled in Wellesley some thirty-one years ago and enjoyed a very large practice for many years. He was a man of broad and liberal views and enjoyed in a marked degree the esteem and confidence of his fellow citizens. He filled the position of postmaster for the last fifteen or eighteen years, Medical Health Officer of Wellesley Township, and was an active and influential member of the High School Board. Four children survive him, three grown-up daughters and one son, fourteen years of age. One of the daughters is married to Dr. Glaister who has been associated with his father-in-law in his practice for the past three or four years. The funeral will take place (to-day) Thursday.

    _________________

The site of Wellesley was first occupied by John Smith, a squatter, in 1847. He came in some time prior to the survey. When the post office was established in 1851 it was called Smithville, but the following year the name was changed to Wellesley. William Brown was the first postmaster. Smith was followed by such noted pioneers as Christian Boshart, Charles Ottmann and John Zoeger. The latter was the first merchant and hotel keeper. The building he occupied is the one now owned by Dr William Morton, who uses it for a drug store, post office and private residence.

    Notes:

    Jerry H.L.W. Flynn

It was morning on September 12, 1918 when a Waterloo mother received two pieces of mail '96 a letter from her son, a pilot fighting overseas in the Great War, and a telegram from the secretary of the Canadian Air Force. One can only wonder which letter Mrs. Lilly Flynn opened first. The letter from her 19-year-old son, Captain Jerry Flynn, was dated August 13 and he wrote of being in good health. The telegram from Ottawa told Mrs. Flynn that her son was reported missing on September 3.

The story of Jerry Flynn is but one story of the losses that Waterloo families suffered in the Great War between 1914 and 1918. Jerry Flynn was one of sixteen Waterloo soldiers who died.....

It would be much later that newsreaders in Waterloo would learn of the agony "Little Jerry's" squadron would express the day he went tumbling down in flames after being shot by one of a dozen Fokkers. In 1967, the Waterloo Chronicle published an account by Captain Bogart Rogers of the moment Flynn's comrades learned the "pet of the squadron" had lost his life:

On that day the whole outfit blew up like a toy balloon. A kid
named John Trussler, grabbed his champagne glass, hurled it the
length of the mess, leaped to his feet and started a vivid impression
of a lunatic . . . he swore and cursed and cried. He cursed God
and the Germans. He cursed the war and the army. He cursed his
    parents because he was born.

He told Little Jerry Flynn who he knew was sitting in the room
listening to him, who was sitting right there in that chair that he
didn't have to worry. They couldn't get away with it.
His comrades tried to stop his cursing and raving and finally
pulled him down into a chair. He hid his head in his hands and
sobbed horribly. Half of the others were sobbing. The rest were
trying to quieten things down but feeling no better themselves.

    Notes:

Deborah Glaister was born in Wellesley Township in 1906 into a medical family. Her father's high expectations and diagnostic skills influenced her greatly to choose medicine over the more traditional role of nursing.

Glaister graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1932 and did post-graduate work in England. In 1936 she returned to Wellesley, Ontario to assist her ailing father with his medical practice. For several years, Dr. Debbie, as she was known, took on a busy rural caseload and she was Wellesley Township's first female physician. Her deep compassion and professionalism made her very popular with her patients.

In 1943 the recently married Glaister-Hannay joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps where she qualified as Captain. After the war Glaister-Hannay had a full medical practice as Kitchener's first female specialist. She later joined Freeport Hospital, eventually becoming the hospital's chief of staff.

In 1999, Wellesley Township honoured its first female doctor by naming a road Deborah Glaister Line.
