Military matters engaged the attention of Haysville in early days. Mr. Charles D. Brown, one of our highly respected citizens, who for the past 58 years has been Superintendent of Christ Church Sunday-school, was interested as an officer and was largely instrumental in recruiting a good company. During the Fenian Raid many Haysville men were on duty at the border.

Brown, Charles Davy. - Although Mr. Brown cannot be numbered among those who came to the Parish in its earlier days, yet his eminent services to the Church compel us to break the rule which we laid down for our guidance in selecting names for brief biographies and which was that they should be the heads of the families of 1852. The subject of our sketch was born at Hemingstone Rectory, Suffolk, England, and was one of the twelve children of the Rev. Thomas Brown, B. A., J. P., for sixty years rector of the Parish. He came to Canada in 1856 on the paddle steamer "Canada" of the Cunard Line, landing first at Boston, where he and his brother, now the Rev. Frederick, of England, who accompanied him, were energetically canvassed for votes by the henchmen of the two candidates for the Presidency of the United States at the time, Mr. Buchanan and Mr, Fremont. They at once set out for Galt, Ontario, as previously arranged, and where they entered as farm pupils with Mr. Wm. Tye. In 1858 Mr. Brown purchased the farm now owned by Mr. Ferdinand Schramm and where he and Frederick remained until 1864, when they purchased the farm of 300 acres from Mr. Daniel Tye. Mr. Frederick Brown sold his 150 acres and entered as a candidate for the Priesthood, while Charles D. kept the remaining half known as Nith Grove where he still resides. In 1872 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Ann Warnes, a talented young English lady. Mr. Brown has always been an active worker in the cause of religion and started the first Sunday School at Haysville, a union one, but which afterwards became the Church of England Sunday School of Christ Church and in which he has for the past fifty-five years held the position of Superintendent. In addition to this Mr. Brown has always taken his share of the Church work proper, having been warden for many years with brief intervals and frequently acted as delegate to the Synod. In 1864 he went to England bearing a letter from Bishop Cronyn authorizing him to raise funds for the beginning of a small endowment for the Parish. During this trip which was at the time of the American Civil War, Mr. Brown quite frequently met, at shooting parties, a Mrs. Captain Lake and her sister, Miss Carrol of Carrolton, Baltimore, both nieces of the great Southern General Robert E. Lee, and at that time visiting in England. Mr. Brown is still active in the cause of the Church and a highly respected member of the Parish.

CHARLES DAVY BROWN

Charles Davy Brown, one of the foremost and most highly respected citizens of Wilmot Township, passed away at his home Nith Grove Farm, south of Haysville, on Sunday evening last, at the ripe old age of eighty- six years.

He had just returned from worship in Christ church, Haysville, and his duties in connection with the Church of England Sunday school of which he had been superintendent for the past sixty years. He complained of weakness and passed away very suddenly.

The late Charles D. Brown was a son of Rev. Thomas Brown, rector of Hemingstone Parish, Suffolk, England. He, with his brother, afterwards. Rev. Frederick Brown, came to Canada by the Cunard Line on the paddle wheel "The Canada" in the year 1852. They lived in Galt for two years. They came to Haysville when it was a thriving village with a population of several hundred and purchased the farm now owned by Mr. Schramm. They lived on the property for four years. They purchased 300 acres from the late Daniel Tye. C. D. Brown was married to Elizabeth A. Warnes of Bolwick Hall, Norwich, England in Christ church, Haysville on October 11, 1872. Besides Mrs. Brown, who survives, there is a family of nine children. Everard of St. Paul, Mrs. Spielman of Montreal, Mrs. Field of Chilliwack, B.C., Mrs. Steel of Brampton, Mrs. Grissette of Blair, Mrs. Falls of Chicago, George of Calgary, Miss Carry and Thomas at home.

The late Mr. Brown took a very prominent part in all work for the best improvement of the community. He was for many years assistant secretary of the South Waterloo Farmers' Institute. He was untiring in his efforts on behalf of the church. Some years ago while in England he received a fund of money from his many friends to form an endowment fund which was invsted with the Synod of Huron and it has since provided a substantial income to the Anglican churches, St. James, Wilmot and Christ church, Haysville.

The sympathy of a very wide circle of friends is extended to Mrs. Brown and family.

PATTERSON-STEELE

A very pretty wedding took place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, in Christ church, Haysville, when Mrs. Frederica S, Steele, daughter of the late Mr. Charles Davey became the wife of Mr. John Patterson, junior son of Mr. and Mrs. John Patterson of Brampton. The well appointed church was very tastefully decorated with borders of roses and daisies.

The bride, who was attended by her sister, Miss Carrie E. Brown, entered the church, leaning on the arm of her brother Thomas G. to the strains of the wedding march played by Miss D. T. Walker, She was comingly gowned in white volle with touches of white satin, and white lace hat to match. She carried a beauiful bouquet of pink roses, and maiden hair ferns. The bridesmaid wore a dainty dress of grey georgette with touches of pink and car ried a bouquet of daisies, Mr. Elliott T. Grasset was the best man, Rev. A. S. Mitchell officiated. During the signing of the register Miss Fanny Puddicombe sang "Love is Divine."

Following the ceremony a reception was held at Nith Grove, home of the bride's mother, which was decorated in white with touches of yellow. After a dainty buffet lunch the happy couple left amid showers of flowers and good wishes of many friends for Niagara Falls, where the first part of the honeymoon will be spent.

Thomas G. Brown Fatally Injured

A very sad accident occurred on Thursday last at Nith Grove, which later proved fatal, when Thomas G. Brown, son of the late Charles D. Brown and Elizabeth Warren Brown, was struck on the back of the head by a falling scantling while tearing down an old building. He was rendered unconscious and remained in that condition until he passed away at midnight. Dr. McLennan, of Plattsville, was called and he summoned Dr. Glaister, of Wellesley, who brought his daughter who is also a Doctor. Dr. Oakes, of Preston, was also summoned but nothing could be done to save his life. The deceased was in his 47th year and was well known and a highly respected citizen of this community. He was a regular attendant at Christ Church, Haysville, and an active member of the A. Y. P. A. He also took an active interest in all community affairs and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from his late residence to Christ church, where service was held with Rev. Mr. Pitts and Rev. Mr. Owen officiating. A short service was held at the house. Interment was made in St. James's Cemetery, Huron road, the pallbearers were: Fred Walker, Eph. Shantz, R. T. Puddicombe, Jack Tye, Davey and Willard Brown, two nephews of the deceased.

He leaves to mourn their loss six sisters and two brothers, namely, (Louse) Mrs. F Speilman, Montreal, (Mabel) Mrs. R. H. M. Falls, also of Montreal, (Ethel) Mrs. Hugh Field, Chilliwack, B.C., (Frederica) Mrs. John Patterson, of Brampton, (Janie) Mrs. E. Grasett, of Blair, Carrie and George at home and Everard, of Mount Pleasant. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of friends.
