Notes:
HERGOTT, Raymond L. - It is with heavy hearts, the family of Raymond Leander Hergott announces his death on Thursday, May 11, 2006 in his 85th year. Ray passed away, peacefully and with great dignity, in the presence of his loving family, due to complications following surgery. Papa as he was named by his first and only granddaughter was the head of a very extended family who all loved him very much. He was the loving and devoted husband to Mary (nee Russo) for 63 wonderful years of marriage. Father of Mary Jane (Janie) McDonald, of New Hamburg and Jackie Harden and her husband Tim of Hepworth. Very loving grandfather of Kellie Barclay and her husband Stewart of Fergus, Sean McDonald and his wife Tamie of Kitchener, Jeffrey Harden and his wife Eva of Collingwood, and Jeremy Harden and his wife Tasha of Cambridge. Devoted great-grandpa of Julia, Hannah and Jonathan Barclay, Rylie and Tanner McDonald, Josiah, Liam and Eli Harden. Brother of Len Hergott and wife Mary and Irene Haid. Predeceased by his parents, Edward and Matilda (Kuntz); sisters, Rita Hall and Geraldine Gesinghaus. Also his loved son-in-law, Robert McDonald (2005) and great-grandson, Hunter McDonald (2004). Ray served his country during the Second World War enlisting with the Lorne Scots in September 1942, three weeks after his wedding. He went overseas in 1943 and returned home in 1946 to a very happy wife and two year old daughter. He was a member of a very unique "bachelor" club for over 65 years (none of whom remained bachelors). They shared many wonderful reunions with their "wives" over the past years. In June of 2000 their story was profiled in the K-W Record. Ray started at Electrohome before the war in October 1941 and was a faithful employee retiring in September 1986. He built their first home on Guelph Street and their next on Hamel Avenue until the expressway (Highway 85) drove them further into the countryside to Winterbourne where they lived for many years until moving back to Kitchener to their present home. For many years the whole family enjoyed wonderful times at the cottage he built at Conestoga Lake. Boating, water-skiing, fishing and lots of camp fires and sunsets. Papa was always in demand at campfires because of his musical talent. He played the guitar and harmonica together. One of Papa's greatest loves was his annual trek in October to Timmins for the great "moose hunt" which seldom produced any bounty. But we know a great time was had by all. In later years he took up woodworking and spent many happy hours refinishing antique furniture for his daughter and then turning to making bird houses which were works of art. Papa you left us a legacy of precious memories which none of us will forget. We will all miss you terribly and there is no one who will forget your friendly smile. Ray's family will receive relatives and friends, tonight (Saturday) from 7-9 p.m. and on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 749-8467. Parish prayers 3: 45 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Prayers will be offered in the funeral home chapel at 9: 15 a.m., on Monday, May 15, 2006, followed by procession to St. Boniface RC Church, Maryhill for Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Father Ronald Voison officiating. Interment St. Boniface Cemetery followed by a reception at the funeral home. As expressions of sympathy donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home) Soar with the angels Papa!! Visit www.henrywalser.ca for Ray's memorial.
