"The Late Samuel Betzner"

A few biographical remarks in the reference to the well known Samuel Betzner of Flamborough West, who died on the 10th day of August, 1856, will, we are well assured, be highly acceptable to the majority of our readers. Samuel Betzner emigrated from the State of Pennsylvania to this province at the early period of 1799, in the month of October, and stopped in the township of Ancaster for the winter. He brought only a small capital with him, and we regret to say that small capital was reduced to almost nothing by the misfortune of having his house, with all its contents, not excepting his money, consumed by fire. But Mr. Betzner was one of those men not easily discouraged by trifles. The following spring he pressed his way through a total wilderness to the Township of Waterloo, and he may fairly be numbered among the first settlers of that important place. Without anything in truth that could be called a road-without a saw or grist mill nearer than Flamboro' West

BETZNER, SAMUEL D., settler and district constable; b. 1 March 1771 in Lancaster County, Pa, a son of Samuel Betzner (Bezner) and Maria Detweiler; m. before 1798 Elizabeth Brech, and they had a son and a daughter; d. 10 Aug. 1856 near Flamborough (West Flamborough), Upper Canada.

A native of Württemberg (Federal Republic of Germany), Samuel D. Betzner's father immigrated to North America in 1755 and settled in Franklin County, Pa. In the fall of 1799 Samuel D. and his brother-in-law Joseph Schörg left that county for the Jordan area of the Niagara district of Upper Canada, where a number of other Mennonites from Pennsylvania had already settled. Betzner spent the winter in Ancaster and that spring set out with Schörg to explore the valley of the Grand River, which had been recommended to them as being attractive for settlement by Jacob Bechtel, an earlier visitor. Proceeding by way of Brant's Ford (Brantford) they came to block 2 (Waterloo Township), which had been purchased in 1796 from the Six Nations Indians by Richard Beasley*, James Wilson, and John Baptist Rousseaux* St John.

In August 1800 Betzner bought from them land adjacent to the site of the village of Blair. A disastrous fire at Ancaster had destroyed most of his possessions but despite this misfortune he took steps to establish a farm on his chosen lot by clearing land and erecting buildings. Joseph Schörg settled near by, on the east bank of the Grand, and these two men are credited with being the first to establish homes in the area which became Waterloo County in 1850. They were followed by other Pennsylvania Mennonites who sought not only reasonably priced land for farms for their sons but also the continuation of the exemption from military service they had received under British rule before the American Revolutionary War. Most purchased their land from Richard Beasley, who had bought out the interests of Wilson and Rousseaux.

Early in 1803 it was reported that the land these later settlers had bought had been mortgaged by Beasley, Wilson, and Rousseaux to trustees for the Six Nations in 1798 and therefore the settlers would not be able to secure clear title. Betzner and Jacob Bechtel were engaged to go to Niagara (Niagara-on-the-Lake) where they learned to their consternation that the report was true. The matter was resolved when Beasley agreed in 1803 to sell to the Mennonites a parcel of 60,000 acres of land in block 2 for the sum of £10,000 to pay off the mortgage. The settlers sent representatives back to Pennsylvania, where they eventually persuaded a group of affluent co-religionists and other investors to form a joint-stock company, the German Company, to raise the purchase money. A number of the early settlers, including Betzner, who did not have the mortgage problem remained on their original lots and had no financial interest in the German Company.

A leading member of the Mennonite community, he was made a constable for the Home District in 1800 and was a charter member of the church formed by Benjamin Eby in 1813. In 1817, however, Betzner sold his farm in Waterloo Township and settled on lot 3, concession 1, in West Flamborough Township, where he spent the rest of his life. In 1828-29 he transferred title on this farm to his son, David.

Perhaps Betzner's only claim to recognition is as one of the earliest settlers in Waterloo County, where heavily forested lands were reached by trails that could scarcely be called roads. He is, nevertheless, representative of those pioneers who, through perseverance and industry, overcame disasters and hardships in order to establish productive farms for succeeding generations of their families.

Historic Building:
The Betzner Farmstead, composed of a farmhouse, drive shed and cultural heritage landscape, is located at 437 Pioneer Tower Road, in the southeast end of the City of Kitchener. The two-storey farmhouse was designed in the Mennonite Georgian style by John Betzner, and the accessory drive shed was designed in the utilitarian and vernacular style typical of pioneer farmsteads. Both buildings were constructed in circa 1830.

Rev. David Shirk, "was born September 9th, 1801. On January 30th, 1827, he was married to Elizabeth Betzner who was born May 10th, 1811, and died at her son Benjamin's place, August 26th, 1894. On July 2nd, 1837, Mr. Shirk was ordained as a deacon of the Mennonite Church and on December 2nd, 1838, he was ordained as a minister of the same body for the Strasburg, Hagey and Wanner field of labor. In his long and dutiful services rendered unto the congregations of his charge he preached many a spiritual and instructive sermon and in his time was considered one of the ablest ministers of the Mennonite body. He died near Doon where he resided on his father's old homestead, (This old homestead comprises lot No. 11, Broken Front, Beasley Block, S. R.) September 19th 1882. His family consisted of ten children"

Died, on the 19th of September, near Preston, in Waterloo Co., Ontario, of the infirmities of old age, Pre. David Sherk, aged 82 years and 22 days. He was in the ministry nearly 44 years, and had served as deacon several years previously. He is said to have been the first white child born in Waterloo county. He leaves a widow and two sons and three daughters to mourn his departure. Services were held by A. Hunsperger, Elias Weber and Jacob Mensch, the latter from Pennsylvania. Text, Rev. 5: 5, 10 and I Tim. 1: 15.

He was a faithful laborer in the cause of Christ, using every means at his command to spread the gospel and lead sinners to God. He visited, and preached, and wrote as long as his physical powers permitted him to do so. He was active also in circulating papers, having books and pamphlets printed and circulated which might have a tendency to enlighten the people, encourage the Christian, and awaken in God,s people a more earnest Christian life. His last work in this direct was the compiling and arranging for the publication of the little work recently issued in the German language, "Non-Conformity to the World." The English is now in press and will be out in a couple of weeks. Writing to the Editor he said, he thought this would probably be his last work in this direction, and so it proved as the Lord called him away before the English edition was published.

He was a warm friend of our church paper, the Herald of Truth from its first appearance and labored zealously for its success. Many will long remember the earnest labors of our departed brother, and thank the Lord for his kind admonition and words of cheer on the pilgrimage of life. Peace to his ashes.

Sherk, David (1801-1882)

David Sherk (1801-1882) was a leading Mennonite Church (MC) minister. He was born in 1801, the sixth child of Joseph Schoerg, who came to Waterloo County, Ont. in 1800 from Franklin County, PA. David married Elizabeth Betzner (1811-94) in 1827. They had ten children. Two of his daughters were successively the wives of Jacob Gingerich (1840-1920), preacher of the Hagey and Wanner congregations. About 1837 David Sherk was ordained deacon for the Hagey Mennonite Church and the following year served as minister for the three churches of Strasburg, Hagey and Wanner. In his time he was considered one of the leading ministers of the Ontario Mennonite Conference (MC). He was the author of Nonconformity to the World (Elkhart, 1882), 72 pp. He died in 1882.

Begun: 1829

A small wooden meeting house was built in 1829 on a corner of the farm belonging to Samuel Bechtel which was located in the vicinity of the present-day regional headquarters of the Ministry of Natural Resources near the intersection of Highways 24 and 401. The site for this community meeting house, as well as a school and a burial ground, had been chosen on August 8, 1829. The land was donated by Samuel Bechtel and his wife Barbara (Baumann) on March 15, 1830. A new meeting house, of white brick, was built in 1837 on the east side of Henry Wanner's farm, somewhat north of the first meeting house. Meetings at first were held every eight weeks. The deed of land for the meeting house known as Wanner's was dated October 15, 1837. Early preachers were David Sherk, who had been ordained by Benjamin Eby in July 1837, Jacob Bretz, Jr., and Joseph Hagey.

Joseph Hagey was ordained bishop in 1851. During his time divisions occurred in the church by a surge of enthusiasm for a Methodist form of revivalism. Solomon Eby of Port Elgin, who announced his own conversion in December 1869, was leader of a group which believed that members could be converted through participation in revival meetings. John Baer of Wanner's became associated with Solomon Eby, and was compelled to leave the church in the spring of 1874, as were Eby and his other followers. The new church movement resulted in organization conferences which culminated in the conference on March 23, 1875 at Bloomingdale where New Mennonites and Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together as United Mennonites. The United Mennonites favored revival meetings, Sunday Schools and prayer meetings, and were opposed to the use of alcohol and tobacco.

The date of construction of the meeting house which replaced the one built in 1837 is somewhat in doubt. It is possible that a new building was erected in the early 1870s; it is also possible that the 1837 building only underwent extensive renovations at that time. There is no doubt, however, that a new brown brick church was built in 1938. An education wing was added in 1969.

The earliest Mennonite Sunday School in North America was begun in 1842 and was held jointly by the Wanner and Hagey Meeting Houses. It was discontinued after a short time because of a division of opinion within the congregations. An attempt was made later, in the mid-1860s, to begin another Sunday School, but this, too, did not last long. Many years later, on June 10, 1896, a meeting was held to organize a Sunday School. Preston (Bechtel or Hagey) Mennonite Church

The second meeting house in Waterloo County was built, probably in 1814, by John Erb, a wealthy miller of Preston. This brick meeting house served as a community church and was located "near Jacob Hagey's", which was on the road running from the top of the Kress Hill west and "adjoining the Kitchener Highway" (Witmer 1967: 26). Another meeting house, known as the Union Meeting House, was built in the area around 1824. A meeting was held in the Union church on November 20, 1824 to commence recording the accounts of the congregation in Hagey's Deacon Book. The deed of land for the Union Meeting House and burial ground, which was for one acre of part Lot 22, Beasley's Broken Front, was transacted in 1835.
Hagey Meeting House was buiilt of red brick in 1842 on part Lot 23, just north of Preston on the west side of the Breslau Road, and slightly north of the Union Meeting House site. The deed, dated February 2, 1842, recorded the purchase of the land from John Hilborn and stressed that the property was to be for "the purpose of public worship by the Mennonist Society" (Witmer 1967: 28). Joseph Bechtel was the first minister in the area, from 1804-1837; he was followed by David Sherk (1838-1843). Next came Joseph Hagey (1844-1877), who was ordained bishop in 1851, and then Jacob B. Gingrich from 1878 to 1901. Services were held every four weeks until 1890 when bi-weekly services were begun. A Sunday School was established in 1842 with the congregation of Wanner Meeting House near Hespeler, but it was discontinued because of a difference of opinion regarding the need for Sunday Schools. On April 26, 1891 a Sunday School was organized at Hagey's, with deacon Abraham Oberholtzer as superintendent. Five years later, on June 10, 1896, a Sunday School was organized at the Wanner church.
Major changes were made to the church building in 1927-1928 when the basement was excavated, new windows were installed and the roof was raised two feet. Fire on January 15, 1950 caused extensive damage to the interior and furnishings of the church. The building was completely renovated and also enlarged at the same time; dedication was on July 2, 1950. Another fire, on Feburary 19, 1953, completely destroyed the church. A congregational decision was made to build a new church, on Concession Road in Preston, and the cornerstone was laid on Thanksgiving Day, October 12, 1953. Official dedication services in the new Preston Mennonite Church were held on May 16, 1954. The building was enlarged in the summer of 1989.<sup>5a

Pioneer Park (Weber/Strasburg) Christian Fellowship Mennonite Church

Early services were held in the homes of the first settlers, perhaps as early as 1833. Services often were held at the home of David Weber who lived across from where the church would be located. David Sherk was ordained deacon to serve the group in 1837, and in the next year, 1838, he was ordained minister. He was followed in 1840 by John Steckle (Stoeckle).
In 1842, David Weber donated one acre of land for a meeting house and burial ground. The deed was dated March 23, 1854, although the meeting house had been built in 1843. A new yellow brick church was built in 1894 on the same site. Noah Stauffer, who had been ordained in 1876 to assist John Steckle, was minister at the time. A Sunday School was organized in the 1890s; Sunday School records date from 1898. In 1899 the first Bible Conference to be held in an Ontario Mennonite church was held in the Weber church.
In 1971-1972 the church was enlarged and completely renovated. During that time - from October 17, 1971 to January 23, 1972 - the congregation met in the Herbert Feick home on Doon Village Road. On September 24, 1872 the congregation celebrated the 130th Anniversary of the building of the first meeting house. The name of the church was changed to Pioneer Park Christian Fellowship Mennonite Church in 1972.
In 1951 the congregation had purchased from Clifford Snider an additional acre of land located behind the church. In 1976, for the sum of $1, the congregation acquired a sixty-five foot strip of land along the south edge of the church property from Major Holdings & Development Co. A new church was built within several feet of the old yellow brick one which was removed; the date on the cornerstone is 1980. The 150th Anniversary of the construction of the first meeting house is to be celebrated in 1993. <sup>6a

Partial demo slated for heritage site
Rear annex of 330 Joseph Schoerg Cres. to be demolished in coming months


Owners of the Schoerg farmhouse at 330 Joseph Schoerg Cres., are working on a plan to complete the restoration of the property, which has sat vacant for a number of years. The restoration will include a partial demolition of its rear annex, which is structurally unsound.

The old Schoerg family farmhouse at 330 Joseph Schoerg Cres. is the next heritage property in Kitchener to face demolition '97 a partial demolition of its rear annex to fix what's currently deemed unsafe.

That's because given the choice '97 to demolish it entirely and build a brand new home, or to spend the time and money to repair the rundown heritage home '97 Pat George and his JHS Properties team opted to save it.

They just didn't think it would take so long, nor did they plan on having to demolish any part of it.

"It's been a long process, that's for sure," George said. "We just thought, it's a cultural area and if we could save the house we would do it."

George's company purchased the property and surrounding land to build the Deer Ridge subdivision in the late 1990s. They have been trying to repair the heritage-designated farmhouse ever since.

The-two-and-a-half-storey, red brick house is a classic example of a Mennonite Georgian style building. David Sherk, son of early pioneer Joseph Schoerg, built the homestead in 1830. It is believed that Sherk was the first non-native child born in what would soon become Waterloo County, and his building it is one reason for the farmhouse's heritage designation.

"Looking back, would I do it again? Probably not, because I didn't realize all of what is involved here and how bad the house was," George said. "At the time it seemed like a worthwhile thing to do."

He added, the company has spent well over $100,000 just to gut the house and temporarily hold up the rear annex, which was a later addition to the house. To fix it, according to City of Kitchener documents from 2007, would cost upwards of $235,000.

"At one point, we had a report that indicated the house was possibly better than what it was," he said. "It was pretty run down."

"When we actually started the process, the house was vacant and the prior owner had applied for a demolition permit. We basically decided we would attempt to save the house, which became a lot longer process and a lot more involved than what we had ever imagined."

The bad news just kept coming.

"There were major problems where roof troughs were collapsing and the wiring was totally shot prior to us taking ownership of the house," George said. "People did interior renovations where they cut through structural beams to put stairs in and create washrooms in different areas, so they structurally had done a lot of damage to the house that wasn't apparent."

So now that the Deer Ridge subdivision around the heritage site is near complete, George said his team is again trying to create a Heritage Kitchener-approved plan that would bring the old farmhouse back to life.

George said the goal is to complete the rest of the project in six to seven months.

"We're still working on it. We've got blueprints being prepared right now that will shortly be submitted to Heritage Kitchener in coming months," he said.

George said because people occasionally break into the property, they regularly check on the property, ensuring it's boarded up and well-secured.

In an interview last month, Leon Bensason, the city's cultural heritage co-ordinator, said properties such as this one continue to be a concern. When it comes to protecting heritage properties, "The city can't do this alone," he said.

"It's been vacant for a number of years," Bensason said, adding that's a red flag.

It's unclear how long 330 Joseph Schoerg Cres. has been unoccupied, but George said it's been vacant as long as they've owned it. Though, he was uncertain of the date it was purchased.

"We've been trying to work with the property owner again, trying to ensure that the property is adequately maintained and hopefully find a tenant or a new owner for the property who wants to restore it," Bensason said.

"A lot of responsibility lays with the property owner.

You have to have a property owner who is willing to maintain the property, and willing to ensure heritage attributes are well cared for."

It's especially difficult for the city to monitor the site if the property is both privately-owned and vacant, he added.

"There is a measure of protection under the property standards bylaw," Bensason said. "That ensures the city undertakes inspections every couple of years to understand which of those designated properties are vacant. Those are the ones that are most at risk."<sup>7a

Historic Building:
The Schoerg Homestead, located at 381 Pioneer Tower Road, is situated on a ridge overlooking the Grand River Valley in Pioneer Tower West, City of Kitchener. The two-and-a-half-storey red-brick building was designed in the Mennonite Georgian style, and constructed circa 1830 by David Sherk.
The property was designated for its heritage value by the City of Kitchener under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (By-law 2003-227).

The Schoerg Homestead is a classic representation of the Mennonite Georgian style. The house is a two-and-a-half-storey dwelling, constructed of hand-made red-brick, with a two-storey wood frame wing to the rear. The structure is in sound condition and has been altered very little from its original appearance. The brick portion of the home is set upon a foundation of rough squared granite stone. The fieldstone foundation of the two-storey rear wing suggests an earlier farmhouse may have existed at this location.

The Late Mrs. John Master

One after another, the old landmarks are passing away from amongst us and on Sunday there joined the ranks of the departed, Catharine Reichard, relict of the late John Master, at the ripe old age of nearly 87 years. The subject of our sketch was born in Wilmot Township on May 15th, 1841, and her marriage to Mr. Master (as his second wife) took place April 30th, 1841. There was no issue from this marriage. In 1891 the already aged couple removed to Berlin where, in the family of his son, Isaac Master, ex-M.P.P., they spent the evening of their days in comfort and ended their lived in peace. The husband of the now deceased died in September, 1895.
The funeral takes place on Wednesday as per announcement elsewhere in this issue.

DEATH OF MRS. MASTER. - Catharine Reichert, relict of the late John Master, died at the residence of the late Isaac Master, Berlin, last Sunday, aged 86 years, 10 months, and 19 days. She was born in Wilmot Township, and was married to John Master in 1844. They resided west of Dundee for many years, and afterwards moved to Plattsville. In 1891 the aged couple moved to Berlin where they spent the evening of their days with their son, Registrar Master.. The husband of the deceased died in September 1895. The funeral was held on Wednesday (yesterday), and the remains taken to Blenheim cemetery for interment.

Sherk - On the 26th of August 1894, at the residence of her son, Bro. Benjamin Sherk of Breslau, Waterloo Co., Ont., of general debility and dropsy, sister Elizbeth Sherk, maiden name Betzner, aged 83 y., 3 m., 16 d. Her husband, Pre. David Sherk, died a number of years ago. They lived for many years on the old Sherk homestead opposite the village of Doon, in a neighborhood where almost the first ground was broken for cultivation in the backwoods by our brethren who came from Pennsylvania over a century ago. Sister Sherk seemed like one of the connecting links that bound the past to the present, and her interesting accounts of the pioneer days, the meeting of the Mohawk Indian braves in council on the opposite bank of the Grand River every fall, the gradual settlement of the country, the building of villages that have since grown into towns, the gradual growth of the church from a small body to a large membership, and the gradual disappearance of the red man of the forest, always found ready listeners. Her faith was unwavering, and as she slowly passed down to the river of death she realized the presence of that "one that sticketh closer than a brother," and with such companionship, death had no terrors for her. She leaves 2 sons, Bro. Benjamin and Isaac W. B., and two daughters, sister Gingrich, wife of Pre. J. B. Gingrich, and sister Barbara, who was the constant and loving companion and stay of her mother in her declining years. The burial in the family graveyard, as also the funeral services at the Cressman M. H., Breslau, were very largely attended.

Oldest Berlin Citizen is Dead
Jacob B. Betzner Passes Away on Monday in His 98th Year
Was Born Near Doon

Berlin's oldest citizen, Mr. Jacob B. Betzner, passed peacefully away on Monday afternoon at the advanced age of 97 years, 1 month and 26 days. The decease enjoyed good health almost until the end. Two months ago he became quite feeble but his mind was clear up to about two weeks ago when the infirmities of old age weakened his constitution until the Grim Reaper summoned him.

The late Jacob B. Betzner was one of the pioneer native-born residents of Waterloo County. He was the youngest child of John and Mary (Bechtel) Betzner, and was born September 5, 1818, on the first settlement in Waterloo township, east of Doon, now known as the old Betzner Homestead. He began farming when a young man on the Springbank farm, near Breslau, now owned by Mr. A. C. Hallman. He later moved to Port Elgin where he purchased the flour mills of that village which he operated for a number of years. He sold those mills and then bought the New Dundee mills which he run several years. He retired later and moved back to Breslau. Since the death of his second wife he has been living with his children in Berlin and vicinity.

On April 15th, 1842, he was married to Magdalena Scheirich, and the union was blessed with four children, viz: Mary (Mrs. Benj. Stauffer), High River, Alta.; Barbara (Mrs. (Rev) Noah Stauffer), Waterloo; John, Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Isaac, New Hamburg. After her decease in 1849, the late Mr. Betzner married Maria Bretz and the union was blessed with six children, viz: Mrs. Aaron Cressman, Vineland, Ont.; Aaron, Berlin; Moses, on the Breslau Road; Samuel, Yukon Territory; Mrs. Eph. S. Cressman, Berlin. The youngest child, Mrs. Ozias Snyder, died at Breslau in 1893.

The late Mr. Betzner was industrious and successful in his various undertakings, whether as a farmer or a miller. He was of a retiring disposition, but has always been held in the highest esteem by all his acquaintances. During years of his retirement he kept himself informed regarding the events that were announced from time to time. He was particularly interested in the automobile enterprise and greatly enjoyed rides throughout the country. He was a Mennonite in religion and a Liberal in politics.

The funeral will take place from the residence of his son, Aaron Betzner, 148 Weber Street E., Berlin on Wednesday, Nov. 3rd at 1: 30 p.m., to the Breslau Mennonite Church for service and internment.

Betzner - Bro. Jacob B. Betzner was born Sept. 5, 1818, in one of the early settlements of Waterloo Co., Ont.; died at the home of his son, Bro. Aaron Betzner, in Berlin, Ont., Nov. 1, 1915; aged 97 y. 1 m. 26 d. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. On April 15, 1842, he was married to Magdalena Scheirick. This union was blessed with four children, all of whom are yet living. She died in 1849. On Sept. 28, 1851, he was married to Maria Bretz, which union was blessed with 6 children, all living except one. His second wife died in 1899. He leaves a posterity of 10 children, 9 of whom are living; 45 grandchildren, 42 whom are living; 53 great-grandchildren, of whom 7 died, and also 2 great-great-grandchildren. Bro. Betzner was a member of the Mennonite Church from his youth. The funeral was held on Nov. 3. Services at the house by Bro. Isaish Wismer and at the Cressman Mennonite Church at Breslau by Bro. Breslau United Brethren in Christ Church

Part of the Waterloo Circuit of the United Brethren in Christ, the congregation was added to the Circuit in 1866-1867 when the pastors were Revs. A.B. Sherk, D.B. Sherk, Henry Krupp and G. Rutt. At the Quarterly Conference of the United Brethren in Christ on July 18, 1868 approval was given for the purchase of a site for a church at Breslau. The church was built later in that year. Discussion at the Quarterly Conference on February 10, 1883 concerned a refusal to transfer a lease from the Mennonites to the Lutherans for use of the church building - whether because the church premises were being shared with the Mennonites or because the United Brethren in Christ was no longer an active congregation is not known.

Breslau is listed for the last time in the Financial Report of November 18, 1893. In June 1896 arrangements were made with the "Trustees of the Breslau Church ... to make arrangements to loan [the church] organ for use in the United Brethren Church at West Montrose ... ." In December of the next year, 1897, the Breslau Trustees were given permission to rent the church. Permission was granted later (January 12, 1901) to sell the church.

My father, Abraham Break Sherk, was born Nov. 6th, 1832, near where is now situated the village of Breslau, in Waterloo County, Ontario. His father, Samuel Sherk, was nephew and stepson of Joseph Sherk, who with his brother-in-law, David Betzner, were the first to locate in the township of Waterloo. His mother was Magdalena Break, whose widowed mother came to the settlement with her children in 1806. We need make no fur ther mention of the connection of the family with the beginning of this, one of the most prosperous sections of the province, as this has been fully written up by my father and others, but will endeavor, at Mr. Breithaupt's request, to give a brief memoir of his life.

Born of Pennsylvania-German stock, on a "Waterloo Dutch" homestead, he understood all the peculiarities and characteristics of that people, and always spoke lovingly and feelingly of his early home life with "Doddie and Mommie." His parents were for years members of the River Brethren (Dunker) Church, when all their preaching was in private houses and their church societies scattered. He attended school on the "High Banks" near his home till his nineteenth year, when on a summer's day in 1851, he wrapped all his necessaries in a red bandana handkerchief and on foot wended his way to Rockwood Academy, eight miles from Guelph, where he was received kindly by Wm. Wetherald, the Quaker teacher, a devoted Chris tian, and one who took a kindly interest in the moral and intellectual wel fare of the boys under him. After spending the summer session of three months at the academy he went before the Educational Board of Examiners at Guelph * made up of the township superintendents, and taught school near his home, in the school which he had formerly attended. He also taught school in the village of Plattsville, but which year it was I am not prepared to say. He had learned of Oberlin College, Ohio, which at that time had a summer session instead of a winter, to accommodate students who wished to teach in the winter time, from the late I. L. Bowman, and several other Waterloo County boys who had been there. In the spring of 1852 he set out for Oberlin. It might be interesting to know how he first travelled there. By stage from Preston to Hamilton; from Hamilton to Lewiston by boat; from Lewiston to the Falls by stage; from the Falls to Buffalo by train; from Buffalo to Cleveland by boat (as the Lake Shore road between Buffalo and Cleveland was then only in course of construction) ; from Cleveland to Wellington, eight miles from Oberlin, by rail, and the balance of the journey by stage. He also attended this school in 1854 but the Lake Shore road between Buffalo and Cleveland was then completed. It was here he got his ideas of systematic thinking and studying, and also by the reading of Todd's Student's Manual. The religious character of the place, which was at that time being thoroughly grounded and imbued with the principles of evangelical Christianity by Chas. G. Finney, the great preacher and evangelist (who was then and for many years after the presi dent of the college, and whose influence is felt there to-day as if he still walked the streets of the town), so impressed him that he here decided to be a follower of Christ, and to enter the Christian ministry. It was here he also heard some of the great men of the day lecture on moral and social questions; Frederick Douglass, the great abolitionist, on slavery and Elihu Burritt, the "learned blacksmith", on "Ocean Penny Postage."

I might say, many of his high ideals of character early received quite an impetus from Henry Krupp (afterwards Rev. H. Krupp) who was for a time a teacher in the public school he attended; from Wm. Wetherald, the Quaker teacher at Rockwood Academy, and at Oberlin College. My father was so true to his ideals of life and character that he never lost sight of them, never wavered from them. After his second term at Oberlin College he taught school for a time and then gave up his life to the Christian ministry. He joined the church of the United Brethren in Christ a church which had its beginning among the Germans of Pennsylvania. They were at that time sending evangelistic preachers to establish churches in Canada, and were meeting with a good deal of success in the Pennsylvania-German settlements. He was to have preached next Sunday (Dec. 3rd) in three churches he established sixty years ago near Wellandport. He continued to preach for the U. B. Church in Canada till 1884, when he moved to the United States. During his ministry in Canada he travelled largely and was well known in parts of the Niagara district, Waterloo, Bruce and Grey counties.

It was in the Niagara district he became acquainted with Rebekah Gonder, daughter of the late M. D. Gonder, a U. E. L. descendant who lived on the homestead on the Niagara river, eight miles above the Falls which his grandfather had located in 1796. He was married to my mother in 1859. His ministerial life in Canada took him among all classes of people into the cabin of the pioneer and into the luxurious homes of the well to-do. He was welcome among all, as he was friendly with the lowly and was esteemed by the more prosperous on account of his high character and intellectuality.

After moving to the United States he preached for several years for the U. B. Church and then joined the Congregational Church and was pastor of churches in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York States until 1897 when he came to Toronto to live near his two sons, A. E. and M. G. Sherk, and on account of the advanced age of his wife who was 4 Y% years his senior and who pre-deceased him 1 year and 7 months. This did not end his minis terial labors, however, for he continued to supply churches for months at a time in Pennsylvania and New York States, a mission church in the west end of Toronto, and latterly for four or five years the two Congregational Churches (Pine Grove and Humber Summit), near Woodbridge, Ontario. For the last two years he has been an attendant at the Don Mills Metho dist Church near his home but still he loved to go away occasionally to preach to the churches he had formerly been pastor of. Only last summer he took a trip to New York State to spend a Sabbath and preach for one of the churches at their request, and every month or two he went to see the mem bers of the churches near Woodbridge, who loved and revered him.

It can be said of my father that he was a man of God. The Bible was to him an open book and he was familiar with every part of it and yet he was constantly perusing it, and when not attending to other duties he was to be seen Bible in hand or on the table before him. His studious character did not end with his school career he was a student all through life and I might say particularly a student of the Bible.

He was early in his ministry and always a strong advocate of our edu cated clergy and the higher education of the laity. It was with this object in view that Freeport Academy (at Freeport, Waterloo Tp.) of which he was one of the promoters, and for a short time a teacher, was started. One of his associates in this enterprise was the late Isaac L. Bowman who was its first principal. Owing to insufficient funds, however, this institution was only in existence a few years.

Among his first ministerial colleagues in the U. B. Church and associated with him for many years were Revs. David B. Sherk (his brother), Jacob B. Bowman and Geo. Plowman, the first two being residents of Berlin (now Kitchener), for a long time previous to their death, the last one having his home at Freeport where he lived before and after retiring from the ministry.

Although feeling indisposed for the last month he was only seriously ill for a few days previous to his death, Nov. 27th, 1916. He retained his consciousness to the last and although greatly distressed, expressed him self as anxious to go home.

As a last tribute to the memory of my lamented father, I wish to say that I knew him to be a man of exceptional Christian character, high ideals, broad knowledge, broad in his sympathies, non-sectarian, respected by all, and revered by many. Toronto', Dec. 2nd, 1916.

DEATH OF REV. A. D. SHERK

The death occurred Monday morning at the home of his son, 215 Don Mills road, Todmorden. of Rev. Abraham D. Sherk. a pioneer Congregational minister, who had travelled over many of the western counties of Ontario in the days of the early settlement of the province. He was eighty-four tears of age on November 6th, and was born near Breslau, Waterloo county, in 1832. His grandfather, a Mennonite, was the first settler in the county. He came from Pennsylvania in 1800. Deceased attended school near Breslau, and later had one session's instruction in 1851 at Rockwood Academy, which school was attended at the same time by the late J. J. Hill, railway magnate. Following this term of three months he was permitted, after examination by the Council Board at Guelph, to engage in school teaching. In the spring of 1852 he went to Oberlin College, Ohio, where he completed his education, taking short terms and teaching to pay his expenses.

He connected himself with the Church of the United Brethren, and for many years preached on circuits in the counties Waterloo, Wellington, Bruce, and the Niagara districts. For some years he preached at Woodbridge, Ont. Then for fourteen years he was stationed in Congregational churches in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York States. Retiring from the active ministry he returned to Canada in 1897.

His wife, who predeceased him one 1 year ago, was Rebecca Gonder, daughter of the late M. D. Gonder of Chippewa, Ont. He is survived by his two sons, M. G. Sherk, with whom die had resided in Todmorden, and A. F. Sherk, of Toronto. From his intimate knowledge of pioneer life in Western Ontario, Mr. Sherk was able to make notable contributions to the records of the Waterloo Historical Society, Ontario Historical Society and the United Empire Loyalists' Association.

Two grandsons, Harold and Elbert Sherk, are in England with Canadian battalions - Toronto Telegram.

Roseville United Brethren in Christ Church

Although early meetings are reported to have begun in the Roseville area as early as 1860, it was not until 1881 that Rev. George Backus of New Dundee came to the area to conduct regular services in Roseville homes on Sunday evenings. The first services were held in the home of Mrs. Jacob Bricker; there were seven charter members in the group. Shortly after this time, c.1884, the present church building, which was originally of frame and dates to 1852 when it belonged to a Lutheran Congregation, was bought from the Wesleyan Methodists who had acquired it earlier from the Lutherans. The first United Brethren in Christ pastors after Rev. Backus were Revs. David B. Sherk and Jacob. B. Bowman. The congregation remained on a circuit until 1969 when the connection ended with New Dundee and Roseville became independent. A parsonage was purchased in 1971 and on September 9, 1973 a sod-breaking ceremony was held for the Christian Education addition. Dedication services were held on October 6, 1974.

A split in the United Brethren in Christ in 1889 resulted in two groups calling themselves by that name. One group joined the Congregationals in 1906. The other group remained United Brethren in Christ until November 16, 1946 when most congregations of the United Brethen in Christ organization joined with the Evangelical Church to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church - later to join with the United Church on January 1, 1968. This congregation is one of three United Brethren in Christ Churches in Waterloo County today. The others are Stanley Park in Kitchener, and New Dundee. The headquarters of the church is in Huntington, Indiana.

Although the building was originally of frame construction, remodelling and renovations have resulted in the church building of today.

In June 1896 arrangements were made with the "Trustees of the Breslau Church ... to make arrangements to loan [the church] organ for use in the United Brethren Church at West Montrose ... ." In December of the next year, 1897, the Breslau Trustees were given permission to rent the church. Permission was granted later (January 12, 1901) to sell the church.

After months of suffering from heart trouble, the Rev. David B. Feeling that his span of life was nearing its close, he went to Toronto to spend his last days in the care of his children whose homes are in the city. One son, Dr. F. H. Sherk, of Kew Beach, two daughters, Mrs. W. H. Becker and Mrs. Aldred, and a brother, the Rev. Abraham B. Sherk, remain to mourn his loss.
Mrs. Sherk predeceased him four years.

The body is being brought to Berlin where the funeral will be held on Monday.

The body is being shipped to Berlin, where the funeral will be held on Monday.

As Presiding Elder, in which capacity the deceased acted many years, he travelled a great deal and was well known and highly esteemed among the people he ministered to. Mrs. Sherk predeceased him four years ago. Three years ago the Mission Board of the U. B. Church commissioned him to visit the members of the church in the Northwest Provinces. His younger brother, Rev. C. B. Sherk of Oklahoma, visited him a few months ago.

Part of the Waterloo Circuit of the United Brethren in Christ, the congregation was added to the Circuit in 1866-1867 when the pastors were Revs. A.B. Sherk, D.B. Sherk , Henry Krupp and G. Rutt. At the Quarterly Conference of the United Brethren in Christ on July 18, 1868 approval was given for the purchase of a site for a church at Breslau. The church was built later in that year. Discussion at the Quarterly Conference on February 10, 1883 concerned a refusal to transfer a lease from the Mennonites to the Lutherans for use of the church building - whether because the church premises were being shared with the Mennonites or because the United Brethren in Christ was no longer an active congregation is not known.<sup>1a

Although early meetings are reported to have begun in the Roseville area as early as 1860, it was not until 1881 that Rev. George Backus of New Dundee came to the area to conduct regular services in Roseville homes on Sunday evenings. The first services were held in the home of Mrs. Jacob Bricker ; there were seven charter members in the group. Shortly after this time, c.1884, the present church building, which was originally of frame and dates to 1852 when it belonged to a Lutheran Congregation, was bought from the Wesleyan Methodists who had acquired it earlier from the Lutherans. THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

Abraham Sherk Passes Over to the Great Majority

At his home on Samuel St., Berlin, there died on Friday morning another of the early settlers, one who, at the time of his death was probably the oldest native born resident of this county. Mr. Abraham Sherk was born on the old Bechtel homestead just east of Blair (at present the home of Mr. Barclay) on July 7th, 1817. He was the eldest son of Jacob and Hannah Sherk. Joseph Sherk, the father of Jacob, was the first settler to arrive in the county with his family in the spring of 1800. Jacob Bechtel arrived during the same summer. The parents of Abraham Sherk were the son and daughter of these two first families in the county. They soon afterwards removed from the home in Blair, to a farm adjoining the Grand River west from Breslau - for many years occupied by Mr. Noah Betzner. At that time Berlin was not yet a village. Here Abraham Sherk grew to youth, when his father and one brother were suddenly cut off by cholera in 1834. About a year afterwards he was apprenticed to the late Wm. Moyer, father of the late P. E. W. Moyer. Mr. Moyer did a large business as contractor. A very common mode of housebuilding at that time was known as "roughcast". The old Commercial Hotel of this town, was one of the buildings constructed by Mr. Moyer. The village of Preston had a considerable number of them. The subject of this notice, however, preferred farming to housebuilding, and on his release at the age of 21 years, he hired out to his uncle, the late Henry Bechtel. At the age of twenty-two, with the assistance of his mother, he bought a farm, in what was then designated the "English Settlement" about two miles west of Carlysle near Blair. In 1845 he married Lucy Buckler, and resided on the farm until 1865, when he sold the place and bought the Schlichter farm near Blair. On this farm he continued to live until 1893, when he sold it and removed to Berlin. He had not the privilege of attending school when a boy, and feeling the lack of an education he took great pains to give his children a good common school training. He was in religion a Mennonite and in politics a staunch Reformer, journeying from Blair to Guelph to poll his first vote. He was 80 years and 9 months of age, and leaves the companion of his life for over 52 years and a family of twelve children, viz: William, Berlin; Hannah, Toronto; Moses, Michigan; Jacob, Victoria; Wendell, Waterloo; Thomas, Chicago; Mrs. Foreman, Berlin; Samuel, Berlin; Caleb, Detroit; and Mrs. Gehman, Dumfries. One child died in infancy.
The funeral takes place on Sunday, 10th, at 1.30 p.m., from his residence, No. 15 Samuel street, to the New Mennonite church for service, thence to Mennonite cemetery at the east end for interment.

Death of an Aged Pioneer
Abraham Sherk has Passed Away

There died on Friday morning at 15 Samuel str. Berlin one of the few living members of the sturdy group of pioneers who hewed out the early settlements of Waterloo county - in the person of Abraham Sherk.

He was born on the old Bechtel homestead, below Blair on July 7th 1817, and his grandfather and father were among the very first among the advance guard from Pennsylvania, to set foot in what is know the banner county of Ontario. He lived to see a great transformation effected in this district in the 80 years, 9 mos and 1 day of his life, and died full of years and much respected by a wide circle of relatives and friends.
Over fifty years ago he married Miss Lucy Buckler and to them were born thirteen children of whom she and twelve survive the father and husband. The children are: William of Berlin; Miss Hannah, of Toronto; Moses of Brown City, Mich., Jacb and Abraham of Victoria B.C.; Mrs. D. Hibner, Berlin; Wendell B., of Waterloo; Thos W., Chicago; Mrs. H Foreman, and Samuel B of Berlin; Caleb of Detroit and Mrs Gehman of North Dumfries

Mr. Sherk has lived a retired life in Berlin for four years and enjoyed good health up to within a few months ago. On Tuesday he was confined to his bed and sank rapidly.

His remains will be interred in the Eby cemetery (east end) Berlin, on Sunday afternoon at 1.30 p.m. The funeral will leave his late residence for the New Mennonite church at that hour and after service proceed to the cemetery. Friends and acquaintances please accept this intimation.

BRUBACHER - On the 6th of December 1896, near Berlin, Ont., Bro. Jacob Brubacher, aged 78 years, 7 months and 27 days. He was married to Maria Weber in 1846. He leaves behind him, three children, fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. He was a consistent member of the Mennonite church. He was buried in C. Eby's burying ground where services were conducted by Daniel Wismer and Noah Stauffer.

On the 22d of January 1899, at her residence, Frederick St., Berlin, Ont., of Lagrippe and pneumonia, Sister Elizabeth Brubacher, widow of the late Bro. Jonas Bingeman, aged 78 years, 1 month and 7 days. Sister Bingeman had been enjoying good health up to the 17th ult., when she was seized with an attack of the grippe. Two days later she took her bed, and although medical aid was promptly summoned the disease took its course, and she quietly passed away with the glorious hope of meeting her Redeemer in the world of light. She was the daughter of the late John Brubacher, one of the early residents of this locality and in her childhood was a pupil of the well known Bish. Benjamin Eby. She was united in marriage to Jonas Bingeman in 1842. Of their nine children eight survive her, all married but one, who, with true filial devotion, cared for her parents in their declining years. She leaves also many grandchildren and numerous friends to mourn their lose. Her funeral on the 25th at the C. Eby M. H. was very largely attended. Services by Daniel Wismer in German and by Noah Stauffer in English.

Fatal LaGrippe
Mrs. Jonas Bingeman Receives the Final Summons

Mrs. Jonas Bingeman one of Berlin's oldest and most highly respected ladies, passed quietly away at 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, after an illness of about a week's duration. She was suffering with LaGrippe, which, though broken up, weakened her that she fell a victim to heart failure. The funeral will be held on Wednesday morning at 9:30 from the family residence, Five Points, Frederick St., to the East End Mennonite church and cemetery.

Deceased was revered by all who knew her for her Christian graces and kindly life, her many words and acts of assistance cheering the pathway of life for many a fellow traveller. She leaves behind to mourn her loss eight children, all grown up, four sons and four daughters. Messrs John Joseph, Jonas and Elias, of Berlin, Mrs. M. Weber, town; Mrs. M B Shantz and Mrs. R Dewart, Rochester, N. Y., and Miss K. Bingeman, at home. Mrs. Bingeman attended school in a little red school house near where the Mennonite church now stands, and which was taught by Mr. Benj. Eby. Her husband predeceased her a little over a year ago.

Death of John E. Brubacher

John E. Brubacher, one of the oldest pioneers of Waterloo County, passed away to the great beyond at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, the 24st inst., at his country home near Waterloo. Deceased had been ill for about three weeks with stomach trouble. This with the infirmities of old age gradually weakened him and his end was unexpected. He had reached the ripe old age of 80 years and 15 days. The funeral takes place at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning, August 27th, from his late residence, 2 miles northwest of Waterloo, to the Mennonite church, Berlin, for service and interment.

Historic Building:
In 1846, John Brubacher married Magdalena Musselman, settling on Lot 25, German Company Tract. Their son John E. Brubacher married in the late 1800s and built a house on the farm.. John E. Brubacher had a daughter who married into the Groff family. The Groff family eventually inherited the house and lived there until it was passed on to their daughter, who married Stanley Schweitzer. In 1957 the Schweitzer family sold the farm to the Waterloo College Associate Faculties, which would soon become the University of Waterloo. In 1972 the Graduate Student Association leased the house. Historic Building:
Beautifully situated on a hill overlooking Columbia Lake on the north campus of the University of Waterloo, the home was built in 1850 of granite fieldstone.
No two of the structure's four elevations are alike. The one to the south is the most interesting. A noteworthy feature is a large verandah spanning the length of the building on the south facade. The gables on both the east and west elevations exhibit return eaves and the attic, on each side, is lit by two small four paned windows. These features are typical of the Mennonite version of the plain Georgian style.
A fire in 1968 seriously damaged the structure's interior and prompted the restoration of the home. The generous financial support of the University of Waterloo, the Ontario Heritage Foundation and the Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation allowed the restoration to be completed by 1975. The basement now contains a meeting room, the focal point of which is a large fireplace. The ground floor houses a furnished museum depicting the interior of a Pennsylvania-German farmhouse. BRUBACHER - On the 5th of March, 1893, near Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ontario, of an affection of the lungs, Bro. Henry Brubacher, aged 69 years and 21 days. The deceased was born on the 12th of February, 1824. In January, 1852, he married Mary Mussleman. To this union were born 5 sons and 5 daughters, of whom 4 sons and 3 daughters remain. Sister Brubacher died on the 20th of November, 1867. Bro. Brubacher had been confined to house nearly all winter and to his bed for about 4 weeks before his death. He was resigned to God's will. The remains were interred at C. Eby's meeting house, Berlin, on the 8th, followed by a large concourse of relatives and sympathizing friends. Funeral services at the house by D. Wisner and Moses Bowman in German from John 5: 24, 25 and by Noah Stauffer in English from Phillipians 1: 21.

Mr. Henry Brubacher, an esteemed and widely known gentleman, who has resided near Berlin for many years, died at his late residence last evening after an illness of a few weeks. Deceased was in his sixty-ninth year of age and was the son of John Brubacher, one of the original settlers of the site where Berlin now stands. The dead citizen was very well known throughout the county and followed farming for the greater portion of his life, though for some years he was engaged, or had an interest in certain enterprises in the town. He was of a kindly disposition and leaves a family of seven grown children, four sons and three daughters, to mourn his loss. One of his sons is Mr. "Solly" Brubacher, so well and popularly known in Berlin. His death has aroused many expressions of condolences for his bereaved family, and the county loses a whole-hearted genial resident. He was born in Berlin, Feb 12 1821 and died of congestion of the lungs and will be buried on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock in the Old Mennonite Cemetery. [Henry Sherk Brubacher]

Historic Building:
Built in 1867 it was a one story frame house. In 1978 it was listed in very good condition and was demolished about 2004. It was a example of the Regency style with a low hipped roof, verandah along the facade with some attempt at some trelliage. A style rarely used in Kitchener.

Shantz On the 1st of October, in Chester county, Pa., in the house of widow Wenger, of Typhoid fever, Anna, wife of Jacob Y. Schantz, of Waterloo Co., Ont., Canada, aged 38 years and 12 days. (Her maiden name was Brubaker). On the 13th of September she, and husband and daughter left home with the intention of making a visit to Pennsylvania. In the evening of the 14th she complained of headache and weariness, from which time she gradually grew weaker until the 20th, after which she was confined to bed. Her disease still growing more severe. She departed from this world with a strong hope of meeting God and the Lamb in peace, and to love and praise them through all the ages of eternity with all the blood washed saints. Upon being asked in regard to her departure, she said, "I would fain die, for I could go in peace." These were her last words. She did not complain because she was not at home, but was quiet and patient. On the 4th her husband and daughter, accompanied by their friend, George Wenger, brought her remains home to Canada, where children, parents, brothers and sisters, and friends assembled to mourn her sorrowful fate. On the 5th her mortal remains were consigned to the grave in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends. Funeral discourses were delivered by George Schmidt and Enoch Detweiler.

Musselman. - Magdalena Brubaker, widow of the late David Musselman, was born at Berlin, Ont., Mar. 10, 1834, and died at Berlin, Dec. 12, 1915. She lived in holy matrimony over 52 years. To them were born 13 children, 7 of whom are living. There are 8 grandchildren. She lived in widowhood for 11 years. She was converted 64 years ago and joined the Mennonite Church of which she remained a faithful member. She will be especially remembered by her loving and kind disposition. She passed much of her time in her declining years by singing hymns. Not long before she died she sang the hymn, "Sweeping through the gates of the New Jerusalem. Funeral on Dec. 15 at the Berlin Mennonite Church. Services were conducted by Samuel Bowman and S. Tautenshlager of the U. B. Church.

Mrs. Magdalena Musselman

A respected and widely known resident of the city, Mrs. Magdalena Musselman, relict of the late David Musselman, has been called to the Great Beyond. Death, which was caused by the infirmities of old age occurred on Sunday morning.

The deceased was in her eighty-second year and had resided here for about thirty years. She is survived by three sons and four daughters.
The funeral will be held at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon at the residence, 36 Cameron North Street, thence to the East End Mennonite Church.

Mrs. David Betzner

Death came suddenly through heart failure Monday morning at 9 o'clock to one of Berlin's oldest residents in the person of Mrs. David Betzner, who resided with her son, Hy. B. Betzner on 62 Scott street.

The deceased was in her 74th years and spent most of her time in the County of Waterloo. She was widely known in Berlin and throughout the County and many homes will be saddened by the news of her death. She had been ailing for some time but of late had improved considerably and was able to attend to her duties when death overtook her.

The maiden name of the deceased was Catherine Brubacher. She is survived by her husband and five sons, John, Joseph, Henry and David in Berlin and Eliah of Ohio. Two sons predeceased her. She was a faithful member of the Mennonite church and a daughter of the late John Brubacher, being a family of 15 children of whom only two survive, namely Mrs. Moses Betzner, and Mrs. David Musselman, both of this town.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday afternoon when services will be held at the residence of her son Mr. H. B. Betzner, 62 Scott street, at 2 o'clock and thence to the east end Mennonite Church. Internment will take place in the East End cemetery.
Friends are requested to omit flowers.

Betzner - Veronica (Brubacher) Betzner, widow of the late Moses Betzner of Kitchener, Ont., died at her home Nov. 18, 1935; aged 92 y. 6 m. 4 d. Together they lived 186 years. The striking thing about both was that they died without disease, the body merely breaking down in general by old age. She was a faithful member of the First Mennonite Church of Kitchener. She was the oldest member, and member the longest number of years - 73 years. Grandma Betzner will be remembered for having been the last pioneer of the first settlers who came to Kitchener area in 1815. Her father, John Brubacher, came from Lancaster Co., and was among the first deacons of the Church. She will also be remembered for her good memory, and keen mind. This faculty she kept to within 8 months of her death. Her love for Christian song was also a marked characteristic of her life. In earlier days their home was the "soul of hospitality." Farewell, till we meet on that "Beautiful Shore," in the "Sweet-bye-and-bye," of which she loved to sing. She is survived by 4 children, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. The children are Mrs. E. B. Kolb, Mrs. Charles Quickfall, of Kitchener; Allen Betzner, Berkeley, Calif.; Mrs. B. B. Shuh, Guernsey, Sask. The services and burial were conducted at the First Mennonite Church by C. F. Derstine, whose wife was a granddaughter, and by Moses Brubacher, a grand-nephew.

Gingrich. - Elizabeth Sherk, wife of the late Jacob B. Gingrich, was born July 27, 1845; died Nov. 12, 1934; aged 89 y. 3 m. 15 d. She became a member of the Mennonite Church in her early years. She was married to Jacob B. Gingrich in 1866, who was ordained to the ministry of the Mennonite Church 12 years later and who preceded her in death in the year 1920. To this union were born 10 children: Mary (Mrs. Martin Boyer), John (who died in infancy), Enoch, Norman, Dilman, Elizabeth (Mrs. W. K. Jacobs), Nancy (Mrs. Levi Hostetler), Jacob, Samuel (died in 1904), Barbara (died, 1911) ; also 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren living.

Sherk - Benjamin B. Sherk, son of Pre. David Sherk, was born Oct. 17, 1849, on the first farm that was settled by the pioneer Mennonites, Joseph Sherk and Samuel Betzner, in Waterloo Co., Ont., on the banks of the Grand River, opposite the village of Doon. Here he grew to manhood under the able teaching and training of his godly father, accepting the faith early in life, in which he manifested a growing interest as he grew in the knowledge of his Lord. Trusting in his creator he passed on to meet Him on Sunday morning, Feb. 3, 1929; aged 79 y. 3 m. 17 d. On Dec. 17, 1871, he was united in marriage to Nancy Bauman, who, with one daughter, Mrs. Phares Burkholder, three grandsons, Lorne, Harold, and Harvey Burkholder, and one sister, Elizabeth, wife of the late Pre. Jacob Gingrich, remain to mourn his departure. He leaves behind for our comfort a testimony of faith and trust. Even though his affliction seriously impaired his mind, one thing remained clear to him to the end, and that was his longing for eternal rest. He was very fond of singing the songs of the blest, and one that he loved best was, "In dem Himmel is Ruh." The funeral was held from the home of his daughter, near Markham, Ont., and at the Wideman church, in charge of Bros. L. J. Burkholder, Jonas Snider, and Oscar Burkholder. Text, Rev. 14: 13. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

MRS. HENRY MAIN

Judith Reichard was born in Waterloo county, Ontario, in 1854. She was married to Henry Main. in 1883. Three sons. and one daughter preceded her in death. Those who survive her are her husband, Henry Main, two sons, Albert and Allen and seventeen. grandchildren. Also two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Baumler and Mrs. Mary Castle, of Buffalo, New York and a host of nieces and nephews. There were relatives from Detroit, Flint and Wheeler, Mich. attending the funeral. She was a life-long member of the Brethen-in-Christ church since she was fourteen. years of age. The funeral services were held at the home. of Mrs. Pearl Main, Yale.. Rev. Rickard officiated at the services. Interment was made. in the Speaker cemetery.

Peace Perfect Peace Died In Wilmot Township, Ont., on Friday, Nov. 24th, 1922, at 11 o'clock, a. m, Veronica Wanner Relict of the late Frederick Stager, in her 78th year. The Funeral Will take place on Tuesday afternoon, 28th inst., at 1. 30 o'clock, from her late residence, to the Blenheim Church for services and interment. On Friday Nov, 24, there died in Wilmot Township, Veronica Wanner, relict of the late Frederick Stager in her 78th years. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon, Nov, 28 from the residence of her son to the Blenheim Church for services and internment. Mrs. Stager resided with her son Abraham who is in possession of the home farm and was apparently in good health. Heart failure was the cause of her sudden death.
