Description
Historic C.1900 slant-top desk crafted by Waterloo County cabinetmaker Christian O. Gerber (1845-1928, Wellesley Ontario). Refer to Michael Bird's "A Splendid Harvest - Germanic Folk and Decorative Arts in Canada" (1981: p.115, fig. 83). An outstanding example. Pine, grain-painted surface simulating figured maple, cross-banding, and paneling, full-round pilasters ebonized with floral highlights. Said to be the 'the nicest known' example. Condition: Excellent. Untouched original surface. Desk writing surface felt deteriorated. 42.5" w x 21.5" d x 57" h.

A church deacon at Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church, Wellesley, for 42 years, Joseph R. Gerber, 83, of the 5^th line of Wellesley Township, died Sunday, March 30, at his home. A native of Wilmot Township, he came to Wellesley Township 58 years ago. Born Feb. 10, 1875, he was a son of the late Christian Gerber and Annie Reschly. His wife, the former Mary Wagler, whom he married on his birthday in 1900 at Wellesley, died October 11, 1955. Survivors include three sons, Noah, Ezra and Emmanuel, all of the 5^th line, Wellesley Township; five daughters, Mrs. John (Barbara) Jantzi, of RR 1, Wellesley; Mrs. Amos (Nancy) Jantzi and Mrs. Daniel (Christina) Erb, of RR 2, Wellesley; Mrs. Samuel (Katie) Jantzi and Mrs. Emmanuel (Mary) Ropp of the 5^th line, Wellesley Township; three brothers, Daniel and Solomon, of Wellesley; Christian, of Kingwood; one sister, Mrs. Daniel (Nancy) Erb, of Wellesley; 38 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Wellesley - Daniel B. Gerber, 83, died Sunday at the Wellesley Township home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Brenneman.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Gerber, he was born in Wilmot Township. He was a member of Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church and farmed in Wellesley until he retired in 1948.

His wife, the former Catherine Erb, whom he married 1901 in Wellesley, died in 1941.

Surviving are five sons, Samuel of RR 1, Bamberg, John E. of Wellesley, Daniel of Wellesley Township, Christian of RR 1, Wellesley and David of South Easthope Township; five daughters, Mrs. John W. (Mary) Jantzi and Mrs. David (Annie) Jantzi, both of RR 1. Wellesley, Mrs. Daniel (Lena ) Brenneman and Mrs. Ezra (Emma) Brenneman, both of Wellesley Township, and Mrs. Ezra (Catherine) Steckly of RR 1, Bamberg; one brother, Christian of Kingwood, and one sister, Mrs. Daniel S. Erb of Wellesley Township. There are 35 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. One son predeceased him.

The body is at the Ezra Brenneman home where the funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial service will follow in Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop Samuel Roth will officiate.

Solomon R. Gerber, Wellesley, died suddenly at his home Saturday night, February 28^th. Born in Wilmot township, October 14^th, 1879, he was a son of the late Christian Gerber and the former Annie Reschly. He was a member of the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church. Mr. Gerber farmed in Wilmot township until he retired to Wellesley in 1944. His wife, the former Laura Leis, died in 1956. Surviving are five sons, Elmer and Ohmar, Wellesley; Amos and Solomon, both of R.R. 1, Millbank, and Moses, R.R. 1, Wellesley; five daughters, Mrs. Nicholas (Emma) Schmidt, Millbank; Mrs. David (Esther) Schwartz, R.R. 1, Millbank; Mrs. Ralph (Sarah) Leis, Wellesley; ;Mrs. Alvin (Emily) Jantzi, Wellesley; two brothers, Daniel, R.R. 1, Bamburg, and Christian, of Kingwood; one sister, Mrs. Daniel (Nancy) Erb, Wellesley; 42 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Christian R. Gerber of Kingwood died today at Bonnie Brae Nursing Home, Tavistock, on the eve of his 83^rd birthday and eight days after his 56^th wedding anniversary. He had been ill for a long time.

Mr. Gerber, born in Wilmot Township, was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Gerber, and farmed in the township until 1947 when he retired to Kingwood. He was a member of Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church.

Surviving are his wife, the former Katherine Nafziger, whom he married Feb. 15, 1910; three sons, Valentine, Brunner; Lloyd, RR 1, Millbank, and Roy, RR 1, Wellesley; four daughters, Mrs. Allen (Clara) Kuepfer, Millbank; Mrs. Benjamin (Marion) Kuepfer, RR 1, Millbank; Mrs. Onias B. (Emma) Martin, RR 3, Wallenstein, and Mrs. Stanley (Katherine) Schellinger, Sebringville; a sister, Mrs. Daniel S. (Nancy) Erb, Wellesley; 30 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

The body will remain at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home, until noon Thursday when removal will be made to Mr. Gerber's home for a family service at 1 p.m. Saturday. This will be followed by a memorial service at Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church. Bishop Samuel Roth will officiate. Burial will be in the cemetery adjoining the church.

(Katie) Gerber, Wellesley; and Mrs. Norman L. (Amy) Zehr, Brunner, Ont.; 19 grand-children; 35 great-grandchildren; one sister Mary, widow of the late Menno Brenneman. Samuel Gerber, 68, of Wellesley, died Thursday, February 14 at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener.

Born in Wellesley Township, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Gerber.

He farmed in Wellesley Township, retiring in 1969, and was a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church.

He is survived by his wife, the former Edna Bast; two daughters, Mrs. Hans (Florence) Rasmussin of Milverton, Mrs. Arnold (Kathleen) Steckly, R.R. 1 Bluevale; four brothers, John, Daniel and Chris, all of Wellesley and David of New Hamburg; five sisters, Mrs. John W. (Mary) Jantzi of Millbank, Mrs. David W. (Annie Jantzi, Mrs. Daniel (Lena) Brenneman, both of R.R. 1 Wellesley, Mrs. Ezra (Emma) Steckly, and Mrs. Ezra (Katie) Steckly both of Wellesley; and four grandchildren.

The body rested at the Futher funeral home, Wellesley, until noon Saturday when removal was made to the Maple View Mennonite Church for the service at 2: 30 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late Daniel R. Gerber and the late Catherine Erb. She was a faithful member of the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church. Beloved mother of Annie and her husband Emanuel Ropp of RR 1, Wellesley, Vera and her husband Daniel Lichty of RR 4, Brussels, Mary and her husband Jacob Jantzi of RR 1, Wellesley. Dorothy and her husband Delmar Lichti of RR 1, Millbank, Mahlon and his wife Catherine Brenneman of Cambridge, Earl and his wife Marilyn Brenneman of RR 1, Millbank; beloved sister of Annie (Mrs. David Jantzi) of RR 1, Wellesley, Emma (Mrs. Ezra Brenneman) of Wellesley, Katie (Mrs. Ezra Steckley) of Wellesley. Lovingly remembered by 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband, Daniel E. Brenneman (Nov 28, 1999) and also by six brothers, Amos, Sam, John, Daniel, and David and Christ and one sister, Mary (Mrs. John Jantzi). Visitation at the Futher Bros, Funeral Home, 40 Henry St., Wellesley, where family service will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m., followed by the funeral service at the Cedar Grove Amish Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. Bishop Arthur Gerber will officiate. GERBER, John E. Passed away Thursday, September 9, at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener. Born in Wellesley Township, 67 years ago.

Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Gerber. He was employed at the New Hamburg Felt Boot Company, retiring two years ago. He was also a member of the Mapleview Mennonite Church.

Beloved father of Harold of Route 1, Wellesley, Mildred (Mrs. Kenneth Lichti), of Tavistock, Elsie (Mrs. Harold Lichti) of Route 1, New Hamburg; brother of Daniel and Christ, both of Wellesley, David of New Hamburg, Annie (Mrs. David Jantzi) and Lena (Mrs. Daniel Brenneman) both of Route 1, Wellesley, Emma (Mrs. Ezra Brenneman) and Katie (Mrs. Ezra Steckley), both of Wellesley; survived by 14 grandchildren; predeceased by his wife, the former Elizabeth Bast in 1974, also by one son, Lloyd, and one brother and one sister.

Friends may call at the Futher Bros. Funeral Home in Wellesley, where the family will receive friends this evening, 7 to 9 and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. At noon Sunday, September 12, the remains will be removed to the Mapleview Mennonite Church, for the service at 2: 30, Rev. Alvin Leis and Rev. Jacob Roes officiating. Interment to follow in the church.

Dan was born in Wellesley township, 74 years ago. He was the son of the late Daniel R. Gerber and the late Catherine Erb. He was a member of the Wellesley Mennonite Church. He had farmed on the Fifth Line of Wellesley township, retiring to Wellesley in 1967.

Beloved husband of the former Laura Lebold of Nithview, dear father of Norman of Heidelberg, Dorothy (Mrs. Bob Pearce ) of Ottawa, Alice (Mrs. Paul Yantzi) of RR 1, Shakespeare and Elsie Gerber of Kitchener; dear brother of Chris Gerber of Wellesley, David Gerber of New Hamburg, Annie (Mrs. David Jantzi) of Wellesley, Lena (Mrs. Dan Brenneman) of Lisbon and Emma (Mrs. Ezra Brenneman) and Katie (Mrs. Ezra Steckley), both of Wellesley. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Heidi and Heather Yantzi and Tim and Christina Pearce.

He was predeceased by one sister, Mary and two brothers, John and Samuel.

Visitation at the Futher Bros. Esther also worked at the K-W Hospital for a short time and volunteered at Nith View for many years.

Beloved mother of Irene Kennell of Wellesley, Laura Ann and her husband Lester Wagler of Wellesley. Florence and her husband Wilmer "Bill" Roth of New Hamburg, David and his wife Carol Schwartz of RR 2, Petersburg and Wayne and his wife Mary Jane Schwartz of Wellesley; dear sister of Ohmer and Sarah Gerber of New Hamburg. Moses and Mildred Gerber of Wellesley, Sarah Leis of New Hamburg and Elmina Jantzi of Wellesley; sister-in-law of Eva Gerber of Stratford and Mary Gerber of Millbank. Lovingly remembered by 15 grandchildren; grandchildren: 22 great- two step-great- grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild.

Predeceased by her husband, David Schwartz, February 22, 1993; by a son- in-law. Douglas Kennell, 1965, also by three brothers, Elmer and Sarah. Gerber, Amos Gerber and Solomon Gerber: two sisters, Emma and Nicholas Schmidt and Laura and Elias Jantzi, brothers-in-law, Ralph Leis and Alvin Jantzi.

Ruth was a "Foster Mother" to many boys and also a homemaker for the Canadian Red Cross for many years. Ruth volunteered at Nithview Home and the New Hamburg Thrift Store. ERB, Elmer G. - "Well done, my good and faithful servant, come and share in your Master's joy." Mat-thew 25: 21 Our dear loving father, Elmer G. Erb, responded to God's call to share in the eternal blessings of the Lord on Sunday, April 2, 2006 at 12: 25 p.m. joining his late beloved wife Vera Bast, (April 30, 1999) whom he married on October 5, 1938. Elmer was born in Wellesley township on February 2, 1911, the first born of the late Daniel S. Erb and the late Nancy Gerber. After a short time in business as co-owner of Millbank Flour, Feed and Seed, Elmer and Vera farmed in Wellesley Township for twenty-five years. Elmer was a member of Crosshill Mennonite Church and actively contributed to church life as a Sunday school teacher and adult superintendent. He dedicated forty years to the work of A.M Fire & Storm Aid Union, first as a Director later in the position of Secretary Treasurer. Elmer and Vera retired to Wellesley and together spent their last years at Nithview Retirement and Nursing Home, New Hamburg. Elmer is survived by his children, Earl and wife Eva Erb, RR2, Wellesley, Reta and husband Harold Gingerich, Baden, Beatrice and husband James Bender, Ailsa Craig, Arlene and husband Stephen Hoke, New Hamburg and MaryAnn Erb Schlegel, Waterloo. Elmer will be lovingly remembered by his 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is the dear brother of Laura Nafziger, Allan and Norma Erb and sisters-in-law, Frieda Erb and Katherine Erb. Elmer is predeceased by a grandson, Justin Peter Schlegel, 1981; four brothers, John, Cornelius, Norman and Daniel, sisters-in-law, Emma Erb, Amanda Erb, Doris Erb Kropf and brother-in-law, Harvey Nafziger. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the pastoral care and third floor staff who provided excellent care and support to Dad while at Nithview. Friends and family are invited to visitation at Futher Bros. Funeral Home, 1172 Henry St. W., Wellesley on Tuesday, April 4 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Maple View Mennonite Church, Pas-tors Jamie Gerber and Amsey Martin will officiate. In earlier years Laura was a busy homemaker and gardener as well as manager of the family General Store in Brunner, while her husband operated a farm machinery business. Laura was an active member of Maple View Mennonite Church, Wellesley, in the Sunday School and Sewing Circle for many years. DANIEL ERB

Daniel Erb, 53, of Kingswood died Friday June 16 at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Born in Wellesley Township, he was the son of Mrs. Daniel Erb of Wellesley and the late Mr. Erb. He was a member of the Maple View Mennonite Church and was employed by Lishman Coach Lines. He owned and operated his own gravel business. He is also survived by his wife, the former Doris Roi, and by sons, Daniel, Murray and Keith, all at home; daughters, Carolyn, Grace and Barbara, also all at home; brothers, Elmer of Wellesley, John and Allan, both of RR 2, Wellesley, Cornelius of RR 1, Milverton, Norman of Brunner; a sister Mrs. Harvey (Laura) Nafziger of Brunner. The body rested at the Futher Brothers funeral home in Wellesley until Sunday when removal was made to Maple View Mennonite Church for funeral service at 2: 30 p.m. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

He spent his early working days building what would become the Trans Canada highway and regaled his family for years with 'we built that bridge'. He eventually moved to Stratford, Ontario where he worked for Gaffney Construction for over 30 years, retiring in 1992. Dan was a member of the Worldwide Church of God and enjoyed reading, playing Scrabble and Solo, gardening, telling a good story, listening to music and watching the Habs dominate the Leafs. GERBER, Norman L. Passed away at his home in Heidelberg on Thursday, January 28, 2010 in his 67th year. Dear brother of Dorothy Pearce (Bob), Alice Yantzi (Paul) and Elsie Gerber. He was a long-time employee of the City of Kitchener in the Transit Department and then became an employee of the Region of Waterloo ten years ago when Grand River Transit was formed. He was a fleet supervisor at the GRT depot on Strasburg Road until his retirement several years ago. Norm had a reputation as a very dedicated worker and had excellent rapport with the mechanics and service staff who reported to him. Norm was our brother and uncle and we will miss him. He will also be missed by his best friends and neighbours, Larry and Lynn Bast and their sons, Kyle and Wesley. She was born in Kitchener, 58 years ago a daughter of the late Alvin and Elmina L. (Gerber) Jantzi. Marlene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hamburg and had been employed at Zehrs Markets for over 20 years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and crafts as her hobbies. Beloved wife of Delford Yutzi whom she married July 15, 1967. Loving mother of Christine and Martin Normandeau of New Hamburg, Michelle and Mark Fisher of Duntroon, Susan Yutzi-Smith and Darryl Smith of New Hamburg. Marlene's life centered around her seven grandchildren, Mackenzie, Alex and Jackson Normandeau, Sarah and Isaac Fisher, Griffin and Brayden Smith. Dear sister of Viola and Glenn Gascho of Wasaga Beach, Orie and Anne Jantzi of Nanticoke, Marjorie and Cleon Wideman of St. Albert, Alberta, Ron and Karen Jantzi of Wasaga Beach, Irene and George Hosea of Wellesley, Sharon and Larry Keats of Brampton, Larry Jantzi and his friend Patti of Princeton. Passed from time to eternity at her residence in Brunner, Ontario, on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. Erma was born 82 years ago on February 14, 1938 in Millbank, Ontario.

Lovingly remembered by her 5 daughters: Marlene & Daniel Wagler, Bernita & Kenneth Jantzi, Gwen & Clare Gerber, Patty & James Gerber and Brenda & Paul Gerber. Cherished and devoted grandmother of 28 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Erma will be remembered by her brothers; Roy & Barbara Kuepfer, Ian & Dorothy Kuepfer, sisters; Elsie & Aaron Steckly, Clara & Norman Lichty, Reta & Albert Kuepfer and Mary Jane & Donald Jantzi, brother-in-law Joe & Deborah Zehr as well as by her many nieces, nephews and the Zehr family. Predeceased by her beloved husband Mervin Zehr, on November 22, 1967, father and mother Allan and Clara (Gerber) Kuepfer, brother Elverne Kuepfer in infancy, grandson Richard Wagler and sister-in-law Katherine & Cornelius Erb.

Erma was a member of the Fairhaven Amish Mennonite Church.

Relatives and friends are invited to a drive thru visitation at the home of Patty and James Gerber, 2451 Line 47, Gadshill, on Saturday, January 2, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. A private family funeral will take place on Sunday at the Mornington Amish Mennonite Church with the interment in the adjoining church cemetery. Those who wish to join the funeral service for Erma may call in to the church on Sunday, January 3 at 2:00 p.m. (226-646-1836) and use the pin 99.

He was a son of the late Benjamin and Marion (Gerber) Kuepfer. Willis resided in Milverton and was formerly of RR# 1 Newton. He was a member of Cedargrove Amish Mennonite Church. Beloved husband of the late Kathryn (Gerber) Kuepfer. GINGERICH, Reta Nancy After a short battle with cancer, Reta Gingerich at the age of 74, passed away peacefully at her son Gary's home in Baden on Sunday, May 1, 2016 with her husband, two sons and daughter-in-law by her side. She resided on the Homestead farm in Baden with her devoted husband Harold Gingerich for almost 50 years. She loved and served the Lord with her whole heart. Reta was loved by many. She tirelessly exhibited the love of Christ in her caring for others, often nourishing them with lots of delicious food. She volunteered in the Tea Room at Nithview Home in New Hamburg. Reta worked and retired from Big Four Chicks (now Maple Leaf Poultry) after 18+ years of service.
