Two Killed In Car Crash Near Shakespeare

Gideon Weber, New Hamburg, and John MacLean Ross, Stratford, Lose Lives In Head-On Collision - Six Others Are Injured

Two people were killed and six injured when two cars collided head-on about a mile east of Shakespeare on the highway, early Saturday evening. The accident claimed the lives of Gideon Weber, of New Hamburg and John MacLean Ross, aged 18, of Stratford. Mr. Weber died at the scene of the accident. He suffered a broken neck and severe internal injuries. Ross died at the Stratford Hospital early Sunday morning from head injuries. Injured in the accident were Clare Weber, New Hamburg, multiple cuts and bruises; his wife Florence, who suffered a fractured skull and serious head injuries; their son, Roger, aged 12, broken right leg; Ruth Luckhart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Luckhart, New Hamburg, broken wrist; Kathryn Yates, Stratford, fractured knee; Robert Marran, Stratford, head and facial injuries.

Information given to police was that the car, said to have been driven by Marran, was travelling east on highway 7 and 8 when it attempted to pass another eastbound car on a grade known as Bell's Hill, east of Shakespeare. The car driven by Clare Weber was travelling west and the two cars met head-on.

Eyewitnesses of the accident said that both cars tried to turn off the highway on to the north shoulder. After the impact both cars were facing north. The front ends and interiors of both cars were extensively damaged.

Robert Marron, alleged driver of the eastbound car, who celebrated his 18th birthday the day of the crash, has been charged with manslaughter and released on $2,000 bail. Provincial Police Constables Chas. N. Anderson and Lloyd Weitzel, Stratford, assisted by New Hamburg Police Chief George Thomas, investigated the accident. The occupants of the Weber car were enroute to Clinton where the New Hamburg Intermediates, of which Mr. Clare Weber is manager, were to have played hockey against the Clinton Colts. The game was called off after the accident. The Stratford car contained a number of young people on their way to a badminton tournament in Guelph.

Gideon Weber, who was 74 years of age, was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Weber, and was born in Wilmot Township, two miles east of New Hamburg on Oct 12th, 1875. In July, 1902, he was married to Ida Schuler of New Hamburg, who predeceased him in 1946. In his early youth he joined the staff of the D. & H. Becker departmental store in New Hamburg and was employed at that store as clerk until 1905 when he moved to Monkton where he owned and operated a general store. He retired in 1940 and came to New Hamburg to make his home with his son, Clare.

Mr. Weber was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church here, and belonged to the Monkton I.O.O.F. Lodge and Court Silver Leaf C.O.F., New Hamburg.

Surviving are his son, Clare, and two daughters, Mrs. Mae Ratz of London, and Mrs. H. (Etta) Price, Toronto; two brothers, Jacob and Eli, of Kitchener, and four grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon with a memorial service at Zion Evangelical Church, attended by a large number of relatives and friends from a wide area. Many floral tributes showed the esteem with which he was held in the community. Pallbearers were six members of the hockey team which he ardently followed and supported, Jack Pearson, Harold Lautenschlager, Lyle Roth, Jack Hauert, Lavern Schwartzentruber and Ray Gascho. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg. Rev. M. E. Reuber, pastor of the church, conducted the funeral services.

John MacLean "Mac" Ross, only son of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Ross of Stratford, was a native of that city. He was goalkeeper for the Stratford Junior "B" hockey club and was prominent in athletic activities at the Stratford Collegiate Institute as a member of baseball, softball and hockey teams. Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at his parents' home, conducted by Rev. C. S. Oke, of Knox Presbyterian Church, Stratford. Burial was in Avondale Cemetery, Stratford.
