Historic Building:
The Betzner Farmstead, composed of a farmhouse, drive shed and cultural heritage landscape, is located at 437 Pioneer Tower Road, in the southeast end of the City of Kitchener. The two-storey farmhouse was designed in the Mennonite Georgian style by John Betzner, and the accessory drive shed was designed in the utilitarian and vernacular style typical of pioneer farmsteads. Both buildings were constructed in circa 1830.

Sherk - On the 26th of August 1894, at the residence of her son, Bro. Benjamin Sherk of Breslau, Waterloo Co., Ont., of general debility and dropsy, sister Elizbeth Sherk, maiden name Betzner, aged 83 y., 3 m., 16 d. Her husband, Pre. David Sherk, died a number of years ago. They lived for many years on the old Sherk homestead opposite the village of Doon, in a neighborhood where almost the first ground was broken for cultivation in the backwoods by our brethren who came from Pennsylvania over a century ago. Sister Sherk seemed like one of the connecting links that bound the past to the present, and her interesting accounts of the pioneer days, the meeting of the Mohawk Indian braves in council on the opposite bank of the Grand River every fall, the gradual settlement of the country, the building of villages that have since grown into towns, the gradual growth of the church from a small body to a large membership, and the gradual disappearance of the red man of the forest, always found ready listeners. Her faith was unwavering, and as she slowly passed down to the river of death she realized the presence of that "one that sticketh closer than a brother," and with such companionship, death had no terrors for her. She leaves 2 sons, Bro. Benjamin and Isaac W. B., and two daughters, sister Gingrich, wife of Pre. J. B. Gingrich, and sister Barbara, who was the constant and loving companion and stay of her mother in her declining years. The burial in the family graveyard, as also the funeral services at the Cressman M. H., Breslau, were very largely attended.

Oldest Berlin Citizen is Dead
Jacob B. Betzner Passes Away on Monday in His 98th Year
Was Born Near Doon

Berlin's oldest citizen, Mr. Jacob B. Betzner, passed peacefully away on Monday afternoon at the advanced age of 97 years, 1 month and 26 days. The decease enjoyed good health almost until the end. Two months ago he became quite feeble but his mind was clear up to about two weeks ago when the infirmities of old age weakened his constitution until the Grim Reaper summoned him.

The late Jacob B. Betzner was one of the pioneer native-born residents of Waterloo County. He was the youngest child of John and Mary (Bechtel) Betzner, and was born September 5, 1818, on the first settlement in Waterloo township, east of Doon, now known as the old Betzner Homestead. He began farming when a young man on the Springbank farm, near Breslau, now owned by Mr. A. C. Hallman. He later moved to Port Elgin where he purchased the flour mills of that village which he operated for a number of years. He sold those mills and then bought the New Dundee mills which he run several years. He retired later and moved back to Breslau. Since the death of his second wife he has been living with his children in Berlin and vicinity.

On April 15th, 1842, he was married to Magdalena Scheirich, and the union was blessed with four children, viz: Mary (Mrs. Benj. Stauffer), High River, Alta.; Barbara (Mrs. (Rev) Noah Stauffer), Waterloo; John, Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Isaac, New Hamburg. After her decease in 1849, the late Mr. Betzner married Maria Bretz and the union was blessed with six children, viz: Mrs. Aaron Cressman, Vineland, Ont.; Aaron, Berlin; Moses, on the Breslau Road; Samuel, Yukon Territory; Mrs. Eph. S. Cressman, Berlin. The youngest child, Mrs. Ozias Snyder, died at Breslau in 1893.

The late Mr. Betzner was industrious and successful in his various undertakings, whether as a farmer or a miller. He was of a retiring disposition, but has always been held in the highest esteem by all his acquaintances. During years of his retirement he kept himself informed regarding the events that were announced from time to time. He was particularly interested in the automobile enterprise and greatly enjoyed rides throughout the country. He was a Mennonite in religion and a Liberal in politics.

The funeral will take place from the residence of his son, Aaron Betzner, 148 Weber Street E., Berlin on Wednesday, Nov. 3rd at 1: 30 p.m., to the Breslau Mennonite Church for service and internment.

Betzner - Bro. Jacob B. Betzner was born Sept. 5, 1818, in one of the early settlements of Waterloo Co., Ont.; died at the home of his son, Bro. Aaron Betzner, in Berlin, Ont., Nov. 1, 1915; aged 97 y. 1 m. 26 d. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. On April 15, 1842, he was married to Magdalena Scheirick. This union was blessed with four children, all of whom are yet living. She died in 1849. On Sept. 28, 1851, he was married to Maria Bretz, which union was blessed with 6 children, all living except one. His second wife died in 1899. He leaves a posterity of 10 children, 9 of whom are living; 45 grandchildren, 42 whom are living; 53 great-grandchildren, of whom 7 died, and also 2 great-great-grandchildren. Bro. Betzner was a member of the Mennonite Church from his youth. The funeral was held on Nov. 3. Services at the house by Bro. Isaish Wismer and at the Cressman Mennonite Church at Breslau by Bro. Betzner - On the 2d of April, 1899, near Breslau, Waterloo Co., Ont., Bro. Jacob S. Betzner, aged 59 years, 7 months and 23 days. Bro. Betzner had been for some time afflicted with dropsy, and by the advice of his physician he went to the Berlin Waterloo hospital for treatment, from which he returned home several weeks later greatly improved. He, however, believed that the end would come suddenly, and arranged his temporal affairs accordingly, nor did he neglect his spiritual interests, for he said to his daughter some time before his death that he was ready to go, and had no fears for the future. He retired on the evening of Easter Sunday, apparently as well as usual. Next morning his daughter, in passing his room, found him in a partly recumbent position, dead. He had evidently passed quietly away a number of hours before. The remains were laid to rest in the Cressman cemetery, Breslau, beside the remains of his wife who passed away a few years ago. Funeral services by D. B. Sherk in English from Psa. 127: 2, last clause, and by Noah Stauffer in German. A large concourse of relatives and friends assembled to pay their last tribute of love to the departed brother. Two daughters remain to mourn the loss of an affectionate father.

Aged Country Resident Dead

The death occurred at Kitchener on Monday of David Betzner, one of the oldest residents of that place. Had Mr. Betzner lived another three weeks he would have been 89 years old. He was born at Doon on Nov. 14, 1833. He is survived by two sons, David and Elias, both of Kitchener. The late Mr. Betzner's father, John Betzner, was one of the early pioneers of Waterloo County, and the latter's father. Samuel Betzner was the first settler in Waterloo County, leading the Mennonite trek to this part of the country.

Betzner - David Betzner, Sr., was born Nov. 14, 1833; near Doon, Ont., died Oct. 24th at the home of his son, E. B. Betzner, Kitchener, Ont., aged 88 y. 11 m. 10 d. On April 3, 1855, he was married to Catherine Brubacher, who predeceased him eleven years. Besides his two brothers, Noah and Moses and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Snyder, Kitchener; one half-sister, Mrs. Levi Snyder of Didsbury, Alta., he is survived by four sons, Josiah, Henry, David and Eliab. Eighteen grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren also survive him. Funeral services were held Oct. 27 at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Pre. U. B. Weber of Kitchener, and Bishop S. F. Coffman of Vineland, Ont., officiating. Brother Betzner united with the Mennonite Church in early manhood. In his demise the Church at Kitchener loses one of its old members and the community an early pioneer, who was a grandson of the original settler of Waterloo County. E. B. Betzner.

Noah Betzner

One of the oldest citizens of Kitchener, if not the oldest, passed away this morning at his late residence, at 139 East Lancaster street, in the person of Noah Betzner, born on March 22, 1836, he was well on in his 92nd year, and in full possession of all his faculties up to three or four weeks ago, when he was compelled to take to his bed. During his short illness he received at the hands of his family and other friends the watchful care due a father, a neighbour and a friends, the end coming this morning at an early hour, without pain and without apprehension of any kind.

The late Mr. Betzner was the son of the late John B. Betzner and Magdalena Eby and a great grandson of Samuel Betzner, who was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, in 1738, and who migrated to Canada about the year 1800, taking up land on the Grand River, opposite Doon, where the monument to the Waterloo County pioneers now stands. The late Mr. Betzner was proprietor of this farm during the first five years of his married life, after which he moved to the "Jacob Sherk" farm on the Grand River between Kitchener and Breslau. In 1898 Mr. Betzner gave up farming and moved to Kitchener, where he has resided ever since.

On March 3, 1857, he was married to Barbara Schneider, who predeceased him just two years ago, and eight years beyond their 60th anniversary. Three children died in infancy, the surviving members of the family being Mrs. Isaac Brubacher, Mrs. Moses Shantz, Mr. Oliver Betzner, Mrs. Oliver Hallman, and Mr. Ephraim Betzner, all of this city and vicinity. There also survive fourteen grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. To all of these sympathy is extended on the loss of a kind and Christian father, whose memory will be revered by all who knew him.

In the death of Mr. Betzner the community loses one of the few links which still remained to bind us to early life in Waterloo County. He was one of the original members of the M.B.C. congregation, organized in the early seventies, under the guidance and inspiration of Rev. Solomon Eby. He was a consistent member of that church ever since, was faithful and even severe with himself in his religious duties, and was an inspiration to many by his upright and exemplary life and his Christian testimony given many times and often both in public gatherings and in private life. Truly this was a good man, - good in the face of the many trials, difficulties and disappointments of a long life.

The funeral will take place from his late residence on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock and will proceed to the M.B.C. church for service and to the East End cemetery where internment will take place.

Betzner - Moses Betzner was one of the oldest residents of Kitchener, Ont., among its pioneer residents, a direct descendant of the County's first settlers. He was the son of John and Magdalena Eby Betzner. He was born Feb. 18, 1838 on the Pioneer Betzner Farm, where now stands the Memorial Tower in remembrance of those sturdy, early pioneer settlers. He spent his youth on the farm, and later moved to the environs of Berlin. He attended the school conducted by the well known Benjamin Eby, from who Kitchener received its first name, "Ebytown". On Feb. 2, 1864 he was married to Veronica Brubacher, the youngest daughter of Deacon John E. Brubacher, who survives him, and is the last survivor of that family. Bro. Betzner was in excellent health, and possessed his faculties to a remarkable degree until the last year of his life. He died in his 94th year. Bro. Betzner turned to the Lord in his old age, had a vital Christian experience, and united in the fellowship of the Mennonite Church, and was a devoted member until his home-going. Besides his wife, he is survived by 4 children; Lucinda Kolb, Maggie Quickfall, of Kitchener; Allan Betzner of Berkley, Calif., and Elizabeth Shuh of Guernsey, Sask. One son, John Betzner of Fresno, Calif., predeceased him. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 1 sister, Mrs. Joseph Snyder, also aged 92 years. He will be remembered for his unselfish life, sterling character, and congenial personality by many. The services were conducted by Bro. C. F. Derstine and Bro. Jonas Snider, at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. Text. Psa. 17: 14,15.

Mrs. Joseph C. Snyder

Death claimed an esteemed nonagenerian of this district at 7.30 o'clock last night at the home of her son, Jacob B. Snyder on the Naches road in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth C. Snyder, widow of the late Mr. Joseph C. Snyder in her 93rd year. Death came as the result of an accident which occurred last week when Mrs. Snyder fell fracturing a limb. The late Mrs. Snyder was born in Doon and lived in this district her entire life, residing for 74 years on the farm where she passed away. She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Mr. Isadore Snyder of Kitchener, Mrs. John McNally of Kitchener, Mr. Jacob Snyder of the Naches road, and Mr. Lincoln Snyder of Winnipeg. She was predeceased by two daughters, Lavina, who passed away in 1868 and Mrs. Stauffer Shantz who died in February of this year. The funeral will take place with a private service at the home of her son, Mr. Jacob Snyder on Monday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock and will proceed thence to the Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church for public service. Internment will be made in the East End Mennonite cemetery. Rev. U. K. Weber, pastor of the Stirling avenue Mennonite Church will have charge of the service.

Gingrich. - Elizabeth Sherk, wife of the late Jacob B. Gingrich, was born July 27, 1845; died Nov. 12, 1934; aged 89 y. 3 m. 15 d. She became a member of the Mennonite Church in her early years. She was married to Jacob B. Gingrich in 1866, who was ordained to the ministry of the Mennonite Church 12 years later and who preceded her in death in the year 1920. To this union were born 10 children: Mary (Mrs. Martin Boyer), John (who died in infancy), Enoch, Norman, Dilman, Elizabeth (Mrs. W. K. Jacobs), Nancy (Mrs. Levi Hostetler), Jacob, Samuel (died in 1904), Barbara (died, 1911) ; also 24 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren living.

Sherk - Benjamin B. Sherk, son of Pre. David Sherk, was born Oct. 17, 1849, on the first farm that was settled by the pioneer Mennonites, Joseph Sherk and Samuel Betzner, in Waterloo Co., Ont., on the banks of the Grand River, opposite the village of Doon. Here he grew to manhood under the able teaching and training of his godly father, accepting the faith early in life, in which he manifested a growing interest as he grew in the knowledge of his Lord. Trusting in his creator he passed on to meet Him on Sunday morning, Feb. 3, 1929; aged 79 y. 3 m. 17 d. On Dec. 17, 1871, he was united in marriage to Nancy Bauman, who, with one daughter, Mrs. Phares Burkholder, three grandsons, Lorne, Harold, and Harvey Burkholder, and one sister, Elizabeth, wife of the late Pre. Jacob Gingrich, remain to mourn his departure. He leaves behind for our comfort a testimony of faith and trust. Even though his affliction seriously impaired his mind, one thing remained clear to him to the end, and that was his longing for eternal rest. He was very fond of singing the songs of the blest, and one that he loved best was, "In dem Himmel is Ruh." The funeral was held from the home of his daughter, near Markham, Ont., and at the Wideman church, in charge of Bros. L. J. Burkholder, Jonas Snider, and Oscar Burkholder. Text, Rev. 14: 13. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Stauffer - Mary, daughter of Jacob and Magdalena Shiry-Betzner, was born Aug. 4, 1843; died June 23, 1924; aged 80 y. 10 m. 19 d. On May 23, 1865, she was married to Benjamin Stauffer. To them were born 5 sons and 3 daughters, 6 of whom survive: Norman, Isaac, Fred, Mrs. Noah Weber, Mrs. Jonah Baer, and Mrs. A. L. Shantz. Beside the children there remain to mourn 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 5 brothers (John, Isaac, Samuel, Moses, Aaron) and 3 sisters (Mrs. Noah Stauffer, Mrs. Aaron Cressman, and Mrs. Ephraim Cressman). Sister Stauffer made her peace with God early in life, joined the church of her choice, and remained a faithful, consistent member until God called her home. Funeral services were held June 25 from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Noah Weber, Waterloo, to the Kitchener Mennonite Church for service and burial in adjoining cemetery. Services conducted by Brethren Noah Hunsberger, Jonas Snider, and Oscar Burkholder.

Stauffer - Pre. Noah Stauffer was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Feb. 13, 1842; died in his late home in Waterloo Co., Ont., May 20, 1928; aged 86 y 3 m. 7 d., of the infirmities of age and pneumonia. Barbara Betzner, wife of Pre. Noah Stauffer, was born near Breslau, Ont., Dec. 19, 1844; died in Waterloo, Ont., May 22, 1928 (twenty-nine hours after the departure of her husband) of the infirmities of her age, aged 83 y. 5 m. 3 d. Brother Stauffer was the only survivor of a family of four brothers and four sisters. There remain of sister Stauffer's family, of half-brother and sisters; Moses, Aaron, and Samuel Betzner. Mrs. Aaron Cressman and Mrs. Ephraim Cressman. Of the immediate family of their children, all survive: Mrs. Ida Snyder (who resided with and cared for her parents for the past seven years) Obal Stauffer, and Jacob Stauffer. After a union of sixty years and six months, in which they shared the sorrows and joys in the labors of life, and engaged in the service of the Lord for nearly fifty-two years, blessed with joy of Christian labor and fellowship they laid down their life together to enter the long expected, and earnestly looked for, rest of the servants of the Lord. Brother Stauffer was ordained to the ministry if the Mennonite Church for the Strassburg congregation, near the place of his birth, Nov. 9 1876, by bishops Joseph Hagey, Amos Cressman, and Abram Martin. Early in his ministry he was active in building up the Church, in strengthening the spiritual life of the membership. In company with the ministering brethren - Solomon Gehman, Jacob Gingerich, and Joseph Nahrgang - evangelistic services were conducted in the homes of the brotherhood in Christ, in evening services at which the unsaved were admonished to repentance and faith in Christ, and many were led to Christ in these first evening evangelistic efforts. Brother Stauffer is said to have preached the first English sermon in the Waterloo Mennonite congregation, at the Hagey Church, near Preston, Ont. His services were much in demand on account of his ability in this language. He was nominated for the office of bishop at least on three different occasions - at the ordination of Elias Weber, Jonas Snider, and Abram Gingerich. His labors and influence in the conference work were invaluable, and his counsels were deliberate and wholesome. In his duties and service for the Church in general his efforts were appreciated in the organization of the first evangelizing Board, organized at Elkhart, Indiana. He with Bro. Jonas Snider, were the Canadian representatives at the preliminary meeting leading to the organization of the General Conference. His heart was in the growth and progress of the Church. He labored constantly and faithfully for the young and the old in the kingdom of Christ as long as the Lord gave him strength. His labors are ended. His co-laborers will miss him, the Church will honor his memory, the Lord alone will reward His servant. Funeral services were conducted May 25, from the home, where brief services were conducted by Bro. C. F. Derstine, and thence to the Waterloo Mennonite Church, services were conducted by the brethren, Jonas Snider, S. F. Coffman, and C. F. Derstine. An assembly which filled all the available space in the audience room, lobbies and basement, and some waiting outside the building, gave silent and impressive testimony to the esteem in which Brother and Sister Stauffer were held by the many who knew them. The remains were laid to rest side by side in the Mennonite cemetery. They wait the day of their resurrection, when they shall be like Him who redeemed them and for whose love they served their Lord and coming King.

Death of Mr. Isaac Betzner

There passed away at his home here on Wednesday evening, April 7th, Mr. Isaac Betzner, a well-known and esteemed resident of this town, at the age of 77 years. He had been in failing health for some time. The late Mr. Betzner was born at Breslau and was a direct descendant of one of the first settlers of Waterloo County, who came over here from Pennsylvania around the year 1800. He followed the calling of miller, in which he showed exceptional ability, and was employed in the local flour mills for many years, as well as in Baden, Preston and other places. Several years ago he was forced to relinquish his work owing to failing eyesight. He was married to Miss Catharine Ernst, of this town. He leaves his sorrowing widow and three daughters to mourn his demise, namely, Mrs. Norman Kropf, Mrs. Otto A. Ritz, and Miss Sophia, all of New Hamburg. Two sons and one daughter predeceased him. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon from his late home to Riverside Cemetery.

Cressman - Magdalene, daughter of Jacob and Maria Betzner, was born July 5, 1852; died July 8, 1931; aged 79 y. 3 d. She was married to Aaron Cressman in 1877 who predeceased her in 1913. To them were born 6 daughters and 2 sons: Mrs. J. Geo. Nagus (who died in 1918), Mrs. F. F. Honsberger, Mrs. J. B. Weber, Mrs. O. D. Wills, Lenora, Alvina, Wilfred, and Clifford. Besides her 7 children she is survived by 10 grandchildren, 1 sister, 3 brothers. She was a member of the Mennonite Church for many years and remained faithful to the end. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont., by Bros. C. F. Derstine and Jonas Snider. Interment in Strasburg Cemetery

Betzner - Aaron Betzner passed away at the home of his brother-in-law, Caleb Shelley, 64 Schneider Ave., in Kitchener, Ont., early Tuesday morning, June 3, 1938, after an illness of three months following a stroke; aged 84 y. 5 m. 20 d. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Betzner and was born in Waterloo Twp., near Breslau on Dec. 13, 1853. He was united in holy marriage to Barbara Rudy who predeceased him 13 years ago. He is survived by 1 son (Allen of Toronto), 1 brother (Samuel Betzner of Dawson City, Yukon), 1 sister (Mrs. Ephraim Cressman of Kitchener), and 2 grandchildren. One daughter died in infancy. He was a faithful member of the First Mennonite Church and was loved for his kindly disposition and general Christian spirit. Services were conducted by Bro. C.F. Derstine. Theme: "The Desired End."

Surviving are one son, Allen of Toronto, one brother, Samuel of Dawson City, Yukon, one sister, Mrs. Ephraim Cressman of Kitchener, and two grandchildren. One daughter died in infancy...

Moses B. Betzner

The death of Mr. Moses B. Betzner occurred at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Elmer Hofstetter, at Baden last Friday, November 20th, following a short illness with pneumonia. The deceased was a descendent of the first settlers of Waterloo County who came here from Pennsylvania at the turn of the 18th century. The deceased was aged 81 years, 4 months and 29 days. He spent his whole life in Waterloo County.
The deceased was married to Leah B. Kolb, who predeceased him 9 years ago. Since then he made his home with his daughter in Baden.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hofstetter, of Baden, and one son, Herbert V. Betzner, of Grimsby, besides two brothers, Aaron, of Kitchener, and Samuel, of Dawson City, Yukon, and one sister, Mrs. Susannah Cressman, of Kitchener.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon with a short service at the house at 1.30 o'clock, after which the cortege proceeded to the Cressman Mennonite Church at Breslau for public service. Internment took place in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Oscar Burkholder was in charge of the funeral service.

Betzner - Moses B. Betzner was born at Breslau, Ont., July 22, 1855; died at the home of his daughter (Mrs. Elmore Hofstetter, Baden, Ont.), Nov. 20, 1936; aged 81 y. 3 m. 29 d. On Dec. 21, 1883, he was united in marriage to Leah Kolb, who preceded him nine years ago. To this union were born 2 children (Leona, Mrs. Elmore Hofstetter, and Herbert of Grimsby, Ont.) who survive. He is also survived by 2 brothers (Samuel of Dawson City, Yukon, and Aaron of Kitchener, Ont.), 1 sister (Mrs. Susannah Cressman, Kitchener, Ont.), and 4 grandchildren. In his early manhood be united with the Cressman Mennonite Church, Breslau, being converted through the labors of J. S. Coffman. He was always ready to give his testimony for the Lord, and in his last hours expressed himself resigned to the will of his Master whom he was privileged to serve so long. The funeral was held on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at Breslau in charge of Oscar Burkholder. Text, II Cor. 5: 10.

SNYDER - On the 28th of March, 1893, at Breslau, Waterloo Co., Ont., of consumption, Lydia Ann, wife of Bro. Oziah Snyder and youngest daughter of Jacob and Maria Betzner, aged 27 y., 3 m., 3d. She had been in feeble health for over a year, but had become so much better that we thought all danger over. But she took a severe cold and at once began to sink, and after a few days of suffering she fell asleep in Jesus. She told her husband not to weep, but to meet her in heaven. She untied with the church in early years, and was a beloved member, a kind and sympathizing friend, and her early loss will be deeply felt by all. She leaves her bereaved young husband, one child, parents, brothers and sisters and many warm friends. Her remains were laid to rest on the 31st at Cressman's M.H., Breslau. Funeral services by Elias Weber and Moses Bowman in German and I.A. Wambold in English.

Passing of J. B. Betzner

For Many Years Conducted Grocery Store on King St. in Berlin

The Grim Reaper removed on Saturday afternoon at 4: 45 o'clock, Mr. John B. Betzner, at his home 45[6] Duke St., after a long illness, aged 57 years, 11 months and 29 days. The deceased was born in Waterloo County on January 5th, 1856, and has lived in this vivinity continuously. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late residence to the East End Mennonite church for short service, and internment at the East End cemetery. The request is made that no flowers be sent.

The late Mr. Betzner is a direct descendent of Samuel Betzner, who settled in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in 1755, coming to this continent from Merspurg, Germany. The deceased was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. David Betzner. At one time he was employed as a bookkeeper for the J. R. Stouffer Co., but for many years has conducted the well known grocery store on the corner of King and Foundry streets. While the deceased had been in ill health for a number of years he was always cheerful and bright. For two days preceding his death he was confined to his bed.

He was married to Sophia Brockel who survives. This marriage was blest by three children, two of whom survive, namely, Edna and Erma, both at home.

Josiah Betzner

Josiah Betzner, 15 Church st., for many years identified as manager and accountant of the Haines Piano Company of Kitchener, passed away at the K-W hospital last night after an illness of only a few days duration. About four years ago the late Mr. Betzner was obliged to discontinue his duties at the offices of the Haines Piano company, when his health became endangered. Since his retirement from active business he had not suffered any serious illness until ten days ago when he contracted a cold. Deceased was born in St. Jacobs the son of the late David and Catharine Brubacher Betzner. In November of 1881 he was married to Mary Pamelia Moyer, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Moyer of Berlin, who survives him. The late Mr. Betzner started his business career as a bookkeeper for the late Shantz Button Company. After leaving this firm he was connected with the Haines Piano Company for 25 years. In addition to his widow, he is survived by two sons, Hugh, in Dallas, Texas, and Orvel, of New York City, and five daughters, Mrs. A. H. Holdsworth of Windsor, Mrs. H. W Shoemaker of this city, Mrs. Clayton Kraft of Kitchener, Mrs. Harry Forler of Peterborough and Jerene at home. Three brothers, Henry, David, and Eliab, all of Kitchener, also survive his death. Two brothers, John and Benjamin predeceased him. The funeral which will be private, will be held from his late residence, 15 Church st., on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock. Rev. H. F. Deller of Trinity United church will conduct the services. Internment will follow in the East End Mennonite cemetery. Please omit flowers.

He was married to Fanny Snider, who, with a son, Ira of New York City, and daughter, Una, 2 brothers, David B. and Eliab, all of Kitchener, survive, together with many friends and relatives. He was stricken very suddenly, while attending a union service at Zion Evangelical church. With his daughter he had barely seated himself, seemingly well, when death took him in a moment, as reported by a physician, who happened to be present. The family had lived for a number of years, in Elkhart and Van Buren, Ind., but had again returned to their native city. He was widely known, of genial disposition, was respected in church and community circles. He had accepted Christ as his Savior, joined the United Church of Canada, had become an elder and also a member of the Board of Trustees of that church. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Mr. Logan at Trinity United Church. Interment in the first Mennonite Church cemetery, Kitchener, Ont

Betzner - David Brubacher, fourth son of David and Catherine (Brubacher) Betzner, was born near St. Jacob's, Ont., March 4, 1863; passed away at his late residence in Kitchener, Ont., June 5, 1950; aged 87 y. 3 m. 1 d. On Jan. 11, 1911, he was united in marriage to Fannie Hess, of Lititz, Pa., who survives him. He is also survived by one daughter (Helen-Mrs. Isaac High, Vineland, Ohio). One son (David Leo) predeceased him in 1923. As a young man he was in business with his brother (Henry) in Bluffton, Ind. Later he returned to Kitchener, where he established the Ontario Woodworking Co., in which business he was engaged until his retirement in 1923. In 1915 he united with the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, of which he remained a faithful member until his death. For many years he served as a member of the trustee board of the church, and for several years as treasurer. He held staunchly to the fundamentals of the Christian faith and to the principles of the Mennonite Church. The funeral was held June 8 at his late residence and at the First Mennonite Church. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery. Ministers officiating were John H. Hess, S. F. Coffman, Merle Shantz and Oscar Burkholder. Text: Prov. 3: 1, 2.

First Mennonite Church

The first church built in Waterloo County was erected in Berlin in 1813, and was known as Benjamin Eby's Meeting House. Benjamin Eby had come to Canada in 1807 and in 1809 was ordained preacher. Three years later, in 1812, he was ordained bishop. His "parish included sections of Waterloo, Wilmot and Woolwich" (Uttley 1937: 27). In 1818 a frame addition, which was to be used as a winter school, was built on to the church. The log meeting house was replaced in 1834 by a larger frame church, and the old building was taken to Breslau to become the first meeting house in that community. (The Breslau church was known as Cressman Meeting House, a name which was changed in 1968 to Breslau Mennonite Church.) A Sunday School was opened in the church in 1841.

Benjamin Eby died in 1853. He was followed by Abraham C. Weber who served the congregation until his death in 1874. In that same year, a division in the church brought about the departure of a group who organized a congregation of Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites, to become United Mennonites in 1875 and then Mennonite Brethren in Christ in 1883. Their church is the present-day Bethany Missionary Church on Lancaster Street East. Christian Eby was the next minister of the Berlin Mennonite Church, until 1879. The church was known over the years as Benjamin Eby's Church, Christian Eby's Church (from 1854-1904), and the Berlin Church (from 1904 until 1917.) The name of the church became First Mennonite Church in 1917.

A new brick church was built in 1902. A Bible Study School was begun in 1907, and in 1928 a separate brick Bible Study School building was erected. Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church was formed by some members in 1924 as a result of a division in the church.

Of interest: when the new church was built in 1902, the 1834 frame church was bought by D.B. Betzner who moved it to Cedar Street where it became a woodenware business and then a furniture factory. It was destroyed by fire in 1937.

Betzner - William Benjamin Betzner, son of David and Catharine Betzner, was born at Berlin, Ontario, Nov. 3d 1873, and died at Van Buren, Ind., Aug. 4th 1896, aged 22 years, 9 months and 1 day. Bro. Benjamin was the youngest of a family of seven sons, and the first that death has called from the family circle. In February 1891 he professed faith in Christ as his Savior and Redeemer, and died with the blessed assurance that he was at peace with God and would enter and enjoy the heavenly home of the happy redeemed, and we hope to meet in heaven our son and brother who was so early in life called from our midst. The remains were laid to rest on the 6th, followed by the sorrowing family and many friends. Funeral services by J. S. Coffman and J. B. Hall.

Mrs. Oliver Hallman, 74, nee Zelinda Betzner, of 130 Lancaster Street East, died today at St. Mary's Hospital, following a brief illness. A native of Waterloo Township, she was daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Noah Betzner. Her marriage took place in Waterloo Townahip 53 years ago. Mrs. Hallman was a member of Bethany Mennonite Church. Surviving are three sons, Rev. Clifford Hallman, Didsbury, Alta, Willard of Portland, Ore. and Capt. Garland Hallman of Vancouver; one daughter, Mrs. Henry Bowman of Kitchener; one brother, Ephraim Betzner, Conestogo and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 at Bethany Mennonite Church with Rev. P. G. Lehman pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be to First Mennonite Cemetery. The remains are resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until one o'clock Monday, when removal will be made to the church.

Kolb - Lucinda, daughter of Moses and Veronica (Brubacher) Betzner, was born Sept. 5, 1865, at the Betzner homestead, the Memorial Tower farm; died Sept. 18, 1937, at the K. W. Hospital from bronchial congestion and heart failure; aged 72 y. 13 d. She was married to Elias B. Kolb, Oct. 1, 1891. Her early married life was spent on the Kolb farm, one mile east of Kitchener, on the Guelph Highway. In 1902 they built their new home across the highway, now known as the George Hahn farm. In 1908 they moved to Herbert, Sask., and lived in that section for eighteen years. They returned to Kitchener In 1925. The last five years were spent with their daughter, Mrs. C. F. Derstine. She is survived by her husband, 1 daughter (Mary Elizabeth, wife of Bishop C. F. Derstine), and 7 grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 sisters and 1 brother (Mrs. Maggie Quickfall, Kitchener; Allan Betzner, Berkeley, Calif., and Elizabeth, wife of B. B. Shuh, Guernsey, Sask.). One brother (John Betzner) predeceased her. She accepted Christ in her youth, and died in the fellowship of the Mennonite Church as a faithful member. She was deeply interested in her work and welfare of the Church, and in her younger years was an active Sunday school teacher. The funeral and interment at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. The services were conducted by Bishops S. F. Coffman and Jonas Snider. The son-in-law and pastor, Bro. C. F. Derstine, gave an address on "My Personal Tribute to My Mother-in-law."

On the 22d of March, 1899, near Pollasky, Fresno Co., California, of spinal meningitis, John, eldest son of Moses and Veronica Betzner, of Berlin, Ontario, aged 31 years, 10 months and 10 days. The circumstances surrounding the death of our dear young friend are peculiarly sad. He had been away from home for a number of years, and had decided to come home in the near future. He was engaged by the Ohio Gold Mining Co., and was highly esteemed by his employer as a trustworthy young man. Owing to heavy rains work at the mines had to be temporarily stopped, and a party of miners went up into the mountains prospecting. Although not feeling well the deceased accompanied the party. While they were out, on the 19th of March, a heavy rain set in, drenching them. Deceased took cold and became so ill that his friends had to carry him back. As he continued to grow worse he was taken on the train to Fresno, 22 miles distant, on the 21st. The physician met them at the depot, and upon examination pronounced it a case of spinal meningitis. He was taken to the hospital, but died the following morning. His brother Allan, who resides in San Francisco, 207 miles distant, was notified and at once came and took charge of the remains. He purchased a lot in the Fresno cemetery and had the remains interred there. Funeral services were held on the 29th. The deceased leaves his parents, one brother, two sisters and many other relatives and friends to mourn his untimely death far away from home and friends. Upon leaving San Francisco three years ago the deceased, who often felt lonely and depressed, handed his brother a poem, which seems to express to some extent his feelings at the time. The poem will be found in the next issue. May God comfort the bereaved family in their sore affliction and grant them grace to live so that when the end comes they may depart in peace to meet the loved ones gone before, let us hope, to a brighter world.

Mrs. Magdalena Quickfall

Mrs. Magdalena Quickfall, 88, of 198 Courtland Ave. East, died at K-W Hospital today after a lengthy illness.
She was born Jan. 3, 1870 in Kitchener, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Betzner. She was a member of First Mennonite Church. Her husband, Charles, died April 21, 1921.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Lillian Anthony, Mrs. George (Cora) Oakley and Mrs. Irvin (Vera) Woelfe, all of Kitchener, and Mrs. Walter (Olive) Raymond of London, Ont.; a brother, Allan Betzner of Berkeley, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Elisabeth Shuh of Guernsey, Sask.; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by one son in infancy.

Shantz - Maggie Snyder Shantz, beloved wife of Stauffer Shantz, died at the St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, Feb. 9, 1932; aged 60 y. 9 m. 26 d. She leaves a deeply bereaved companion, relatives and friends and the community. May God comfort the bereaved ones, and may they look to Him who doeth all things well. Funeral services were conducted at the Shantz Church by Orphen Wismer and C.F. Derstine. Text, Phil.1 : 21-"For me to live in Christ." Interment in the adjoining cemetery, in a plot of the farm where she lived for many years.

It is with deep regret that we are called upon to report the death this week of Mrs. Stauffer Shantz who passed away Tuesday at the St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, where she recently underwent a serious operation. Mrs. Shantz was born in the County of Waterloo, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. .J. E. Snyder and is survived by her husband, mother, three brothers and one sister. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from her late home in the Village of Baden, thence to the Shantz Church, on Upper street where public service will be held. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Boyer - Mary Ann, daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth (Sherk) Gingrich, was born near Preston, Ont., Jan. 2, 1868; died at her home near Biglerville, Pa., Dec. 24, 1945; age 77 y. 11 m. 22 d. Six years ago she suffered a stroke and her health gradually failed since that time, though she was not bedfast. On Christmas Eve she enjoyed opening the packages handed to her by her children and helped sing "Silent Night." A few minutes later she suffered another stroke and, without regaining consciousness, peacefully fell asleep. In 1897 she was united in marriage to Martin Boyer, who preceded her in death in 1937. Surviving are following children: Retta - Mrs. Coffman Shank, Biglerville, Pa.; Elton G., Millersville, Pa.; Nancy - Mrs. Daniel D. Shenk, Denbigh, Va.; Joseph S. and Warren M., of Biglerville; Ida - Mrs. Ernest J. Bontrager, Estacada, Oreg., who with her husband was living with Mother at the time of her death; Cora - Mrs. J. W. Boyer.--Martin Boyer was born Nov. 2, 1848, near Biglerville, Pa.; died Feb. 5, 1937, at the same place; aged 88 y. 3 m. 3 d. He was ill four days with a sever cold which developed into pulmonary pneumonia. Before death he realized that his end was near, and he gave eager expression to his longings for heaven. Those of his family and friends who heard some of his last words and saw the heavenly smile on his face as he left will long remember his peaceful passing. "I am nearing the port;" are some of the whispers caught from his lips during his last hours. Sacred memories indeed are these, bringing joy to us even as we weep. A mechanic by trade during his life time, he did clean, honest business for which he was highly respected. From the age of 14 he operated a saw mill, and later added to his business the manufacture of chairs, wooden rakes, water pumps, apple barrels; and finally fruit crates. He became a member of the Mummasburg Mennonite Church at middle age and was ordained deacon there on Christmas day, 1903. He served in this work the remainder of his life. In religious work he nevertheless showed a quiet, sincere concern for the welfare of the Church and its young people. He occupied his usual seat in church the last Sunday of his life, the day before he became ill. He was twice married, first in 1870 to Mary A. Raffensperger. From this union the following children survive: John, Gettysburg; Clayton, Harrisburg; Anna (Mrs J. W. Matthews), Elverson; Katy (Mrs. Joseph Albert), Gettysburg. In 1897 he was married to Mary Ann Gingrich, who with the following children survive: Retta (Mrs. Coffman Shenk), Washington, D. C.; Elton, Millersville; Nancy (Mrs. D. D. Shenk), Washington, D. D.; Joseph and Warren, Biglerville; Ida (Mrs. Ernest Bontrager), Midland, Mich.; Cora (Mrs. J. Warren Martin), Fairfield; Charles and Lena (foster) at home. He is also survived by 35 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Services were held Feb. 8 from the home with Bro. A. W. Geigley in charge and at the Mummasburg Mennonite Church by Noah H. Mack assisted by Brethren A. W. Myer and Roy Geigley. Texts, Rev. 14: 13; Job 5: 26. Interment in Mummasburg Mennonite Cemetery. For almost three years he had been bedfast. During this extended illness he enjoyed visits of his friends and neighbors. On Nov. 17, 1904, he was married to Cora Ebersole, who died March 16, 1946. He was married again on June 21, 1948, to Barbara Bontrager, who survives. He also leaves one son (Willard) and one daughter (Lucille-Mrs. Gale Brown), both of Freeport; one brother (Enoch, Preston, Ont.), and 9 grandchildren. Just before going to Freeport, Ill., in his 21st year, he was converted under the ministry of John S. Coffman and became a member of the Hagey Mennonite Church, in which his father was a minister. In the Freeport community he became an active member of the Freeport Mennonite Church, serving as Sunday-school teacher, as a member of the board of trustees, and as church treasurer. Services were held in the Freeport Church on March 10 with Richard Yordy and A. C. Good officiating. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

She and her husband Levi returned to Goshen from Sarasota, Fla., only a week before her passing after residing there for the past 10 years. She married Levi Hostetler Sept. 18, 1901. Surviving in addition to her husband, are a son (LeRoy, Winona Lake, Ind.), a daughter (Sylvia Elizabeth-Mrs. Wesley Baker, Elkhart), 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers (Enoch, Kitchener, Ont., and Dilman, Freeport, Ill.), and a sister (Mrs. Elizabeth Bingaman, Shabbona, Ill.). A son (Norman) preceded her in death. She was formerly a member of the North Goshen Mennonite Church. At the time of her death she was a member of the Tuttle Avenue Mennonite Church, Sarasota, Fla. Funeral services were held at the North Goshen Mennonite Church Nov. 4, with Myron Augsburger and Russell Krabill, officiating. Burial was made in the Shore Mennonite Church Cemetery.

GINGRICH.-On the 11th of January 1904, at Red Deer, Alta., of pneumonia, Samuel S., youngest son of Pre. Jacob and Sister Elizabeth (Sherk) Gingrich, formerly of near Preston, Ont., now of Biglerville, Pa., aged 30 Y., 4 M., 19 D. He was ill only a few days and his brother, Jacob S., was the only relative with him at the time, although the best care and skill were not wanting. He had lived in Red Deer since March 1903 and had won the esteem of a large circle of friends. Several years ago he spent some time in Elkhart, Ind., where he was converted, baptized and received into church fellowship. Another brother, Dilman S., of Freeport, Ill., reached Didsbury, Alta., on the 14th in time to attend the burial there, a number of former Waterloo Co. friends having settled in that locality. Funeral service on the 14th at Red Deer were conducted by J. C. Forster, assisted by Canon Hinchcliffe, Dr. Gaetz and Dr. Herdman of Calgary. The funeral was largely attended. Funeral services on the 14th in the West Zion Mennonite M. H., Carstairs, Alta., by Israel R. Shantz from 1 Sam. 20: 3, latter clause, and by N.B. Stauffer from Rev. 22: 12. Besides his parents and the brothers named he leaves his brother Norman S., of Mishawaka, Ind., Enoch of Preston, Ont., and his sisters Mary Ann and Barbara of Biglerville, Pa. Lizzie (Jacobs) of Goshen, Ind., and Nancy (Hostetler) of Elkhart, Ind. Our sympathies go out to the bereaved family in the loss of their bright and promising son and brother in the far Northwest. Lorne; Harold L., who died in May, 1933; Harvey A. and Helen, who died at the age of 5 months. Florence, daughter of Bishop Norman B. Stauffer, was adopted in infancy. Thirteen grandchildren survive. She was a regular attendant and faithful member of the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church, having served as teacher of both Sunday school and summer Bible school. Her life, devoted to God's service, was truly an inspiration to others. Funeral services at Wideman's Church on June 6, were conducted by Emerson McDowell.

Weber - Ellen Stauffer was born near Doon, Ont., July 25, 1866; died at Kitchener and Waterloo Hospital, May 2, 1927, after an illness lasting nearly four months. She suffered from complications of inflammatory rheumatisn and bronchial pneumonia. On March 26, 1890, she was married to Abram Clemmer, who preceded her in death twenty-seven years. This union was blessed with five children: Byron, Clarence, and Ruby who died in early childhood, and Orvah, of Royal Oak, Mich., and Gordon, of Kitchener, Ont., who survive her. On May 14, 1902, she was married to Noah S. Weber who survives her. To this union were born two daughters, Mary Irma and Eva Mae also surviving. There were five step-children: Austin Clemmer, Mrs. J. H. Fry, Mrs. A. Erb, Mrs. Ivan Groh and Lorne Weber. Sister Weber accepted her Savior about twenty-five years ago and gladly gave her strength to His cause until she found her rest in His everlasting arms. At her conversion she joined the Mennonite Church of which she remained an active member to the last. She had a singularly kind and genial disposition which everywhere won for her a host of friends who share in common with the grief-stricken home an overwhelming sense of her loss. The funeral services were conducted by Noah Hunsberger. J. R. Webb, Jonas Snider, and C. F. Derstine at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Interment at adjoining cemetery.

Stauffer, Norman B. (1870-1927)

Norman Stauffer Norman B. Stauffer: minister and bishop of the Mount View Mennonite Church near High River, Alberta, was born 30 December 1871 in Waterloo, Ontario, and died 13 September 1927 at Aldersyde, Alberta. He married Elizabeth Otterbein who died 22 August 1914. They were the parents of twelve children, three of which died in infancy. On 1 August 1917 he married Melinda Snider of Waterloo. Norman Stauffer died of a stroke after only a few days of suffering, at the relatively young age of 56.

Norman Stauffer came to Alberta in 1900 to look for a suitable homestead, leaving his wife and family in Waterloo. He obtained work as a carpenter on a Canadian Pacific Railway construction gang, but also established contact with Elias and Catharine Bricker who had come west more than a decade earlier. He returned to his family in Ontario for the winter of 1900-01. On his trip west in 1901 he accompanied S.F. Coffman who had been sent west by the Ontario Mennonite Conference to help organize recently arrived Mennonite settlers in the territory which would become part of the province of Alberta late. Stauffer's family joined him in June of 1901 after he secured a farmstead five miles east of Aldersyde, Alberta.

Norman and Elizabeth Stauffer were charter members of the Mount View Mennonite Church when it was organized in 1901. At that organizational meeting he was chosen, by lot, and ordained as the minister of the new congregation. He was ordained as bishop in the Alberta-Saskatchewan Mennonite Conference in 1911. In that capacity he travelled a great deal, visiting and serving many of the congregations of the conference. He also met with many of the scattered families and small clusters of Mennonite settlers in Alberta. He participated in numerous Bible conferences and was active in evangelistic work. His preaching style was simple, direct, forceful, and often emotional. He was an influential and respected leader in his home congregation and in the conference.

Stauffer enlisted in the Canadian Forces and served overseas with the Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment) 50th Battalion in World War I. He kept his seat in the provincial legislature while he was overseas fighting in the war. On April 10, 1917 he was killed in action during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Lieutenant governor Robert Brett honored Stauffer's memory and military service by making special note in the Throne Speech at the opening of the 4th Alberta Legislative Assembly on February 7, 1918.

The small town of Stauffer, Alberta is named in his honor.

Surviving are 3 sons (Howard, Norman, and Willard), one daughter (Mrs. Erma Nissley), 22 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. One son and 3 daughters preceded her in death. She was a member of the Erb Street congregation. Funeral services were held at Waterloo, in charge of J. B. Ida Stauffer Snider
1868 - 1966

Ida Stauffer Snider's life spanned almost a century. She was born a year after Confederation (1867), the birth of the Canadian nation, and died a year before its centennial. She had leadership and organizational abilities, but few women in the Mennonite Church were given the opportunity to use such gifts in her day. When the Mennonite women in Waterloo saw a need and responded creatively to it, Ida was there to lead the way.

Ida Stauffer was born in Strasburg, south of the village of Berlin (now Kitchener) on August 8, 1868. Her parents were Noah and Barbara (Betzner) Stauffer. In 1887 Ida was married to Jacob Snider, and they began to farm just west of the village of Waterloo. They were members of the Waterloo Mennonite Church, which became known as Erb Street Mennonite Church after building a new meetinghouse at the edge of town in 1902.

In 1907 two young women from the Waterloo area had joined the staff of the newly established Mennonite Mission in Toronto - Lena Weber and Bernice Devitt. Through the Mission, the Waterloo Mennonites hosted a number of "Fresh Air" children in their homes. This was a program whereby children from the inner city were hosted by rural or farm families for a week or two in the summer. Noting the poor clothing which some of these children were wearing, some of the women from Erb Street met to sew new clothes for them. They decided this was such a good cause that they should do it on a regular basis, for which they should have a more formal organization. The women, aware of the expected procedure, first approached Bishop Jonas Snider for approval, which was granted.

The first organizational meeting took place in June and was held at the Berlin Orphanage. The women worked for the orphanage that day and made a few items for the Toronto Mission as well. They elected Mrs. Jacob Snider (Ida) as President, Mrs. M.S. Weber (Lena Weber's mother) as vice president and Lena Weber (who by this time was back from Toronto) as secretary-treasurer, and also appointed a buying committee. They drew up the list of rules and regulations and chose the name "Charity Circle."

Ida served as president for the first two years. The next four years she was vice-president. Then she was on the buying committee for a few years, and for at least a year had no office. In 1917 Ida was again elected president, which office she held until the annual meeting in 1929. From then on she still served on the buying or quilt-patch cutting committees for another decade. The work of the Charity Circle was always a very important part of her life.

Ida retired from the Ontario Sewing Circle Executive and from the presidency of the Charity Circle when she was 61. People remember her as a good organizer. A granddaughter recalls her grandmother's straight and upright figure. She reminded her of Queen Mary. Ida died on May 2, 1966 at the age of 98. She had witnessed many changes, and incorporated them into a life of usefulness.

Partial Obituary

Word has been received here of the death of Jacob B. Stauffer at Edmonton, Sat. Mr. Stauffer, formerly of near Doon, was a brother of Mrs. Jacob S. Snider, Waterloo. He was 67 years old. Mr. Stauffer went to Western Canada about 35 years ago, and was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for some years. He was a s/o the late Rev. and Mrs. Noah Stauffer. Surviving are his wife, two sons, Charles of Edmonton, and Walter of Calgary, one daughters, Mrs. S. A. McNeil of St. Catharines, one sister, Mrs. Snider, Waterloo and one brother, Obal Stauffer, Vancouver. The funeral will be held at Edmonton tomorrow.

Mrs. Norman Kropf

After an illness of about ten weeks the death occurred at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital on Tuesday night, March 23rd, of Lorena Betzner, widow of the late Norman Kropf.
The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Betzner and was born in New Hamburg on February 26th, 1881, having thus just passed her 56th year.

She spent her girlhood days here and on her marriage on March 1, 1916, she resided for a short time at Ceylon, Sask., later coming back to New Hamburg. For the past ten years the family resided in Kitchener.

The deceased was a devout adherent of the Lutheran faith and since living in Kitchener she was an active member of the First English Lutheran Church and a member of the Women's Missionary Society, of which she was president a few years ago.

Her husband predeceased her last August, but she leaves in deep bereavement two sons, Emmett and Lorne, of Kitchener, and two sisters, Miss Soph. Betzner, of Kitchener, and Mrs. Elena Ritz, of New Hamburg.

The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon with service by Rev. Mr. Jacobi in Sandrock Funeral Chapel at 2: 30 o'clock followed by internment in Riverside Cemetery, New Hamburg.

William Betzner A sad death took place here on Sunday, the 9th inst., when Mr. William F. A. Betzner, only surviving son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Betzner, passed away after a few days illness with pneumonia, making the third death in the family within the past two years. The deceased had been employed with Mr. H. D. Schmidt, of New Dundee, as machinist, for several months, and was home over the holidays. On Monday of last week he went to Berlin and secured a position in the Rubber Tire Factory and intended to start there on Wednesday, but took sick on Tuesday with that dangerous illness and grew worse despite all medical aid, until death claimed him. The deceased was aged 32 years, 3 months and 5 days. He was a very pleasant young man and for many years a valued member of the New Hamburg Musical Society. Besides his sorrowing parents he leaves three sisters, Misses Loraine, Sophia and Elena at home, to mourn his sudden and untimely demise. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to Trinity Lutheran Church for service, with internment in Riverside Cemetery. Rev. Behrens of Berlin officiated. The pall bearers were six cousins of the deceased. The bereaved parents and sisters have the sympathy of their many friends in their sad loss.

Mrs. Nicholas Wenzel Killed

Mrs. Nich. Wenzel, formerly Miss Alice Betzner, daughter of Mrs. Isaac Betzner of this town, was almost instantly killed in an auto accident on Saturday evening about 8 30 o'clock, and her brother, William Betzner, was seriously injured, sustaining a fracture of three ribs near the spine.

Mr. and Mrs. Wenzel and Mr. Betzner left on a short auto ride along Bleam's road, and near Mr. A. Zoeller's farm, about two miles east of the village, the accident occurred. Just how it happened is not definitely known, but the car swerved around and turned turtle on the centre of the road. Wm Betzner and Mr. Wenzel were thrown clear of the car, but Mrs. Wenzel was pinned underneath. Mr. Wenzel was but slightly injured and stunned and was able to seek help. Passersby helped to extricate the unfortunate young woman from beneath the car and she was removed to the home of Mr. Andrew Zoeller and medical aid immediately summoned. Upon examination by Dr. Marty it was found that her spine was broken and she passed away about an hour after the accident occurred without having regained consciousness. Her brother was taken in an auto to his home here where he is still in a precarious condition.

The remains of Mrs. Wenzel were brought to the home of her parents on Sunday forenoon, from whence the funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon to Riverside Cemetery, the service being held in Trinity Lutheran Church.

The sad affair cast a gloom over the community and much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. The deceased was 27 years of age, and was for the past five years dining room girl at the Commercial Hotel here, and had been married but recently. A large circle of friends deplore her tragic and untimely death. She is survived by her husband and parents, three sisters and one brother, who have the deepest sympathy of all.

Elena E. Ritz

Elena Ritz, one of Waterloo Region's oldest residents and a descendant of the Betzner family, pioneers who settled in Waterloo County in the spring of 1800 passed away June 19, 2000 at her residence, Nithview Home, 200 Boullee St., New Hamburg where here she had resided for the past four years She was 106 years of age.

She was born at Baden August 8, 1893 a daughter of the late Isaac Betzner and his wife, the former Catharine Ernst and came to New Hamburg with her parents at an early age. She was married October 21, 1920 to the late Otto A. Ritz who predeceased her in January, 1928. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Mrs. Loualice (Nicholas) Wenzel, Mrs. Lorena (Norman) Kropf and Miss Sophia Betzner, and two brothers, Ervin and William and a great-granddaughter Jean.

Elena was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hamburg, where she had been organist for 57 years until her retirement in 1968. She was an accomplished pianist and a member of the New Hamburg Orchestra which provided music for programs and dances in the early decades of the century. She also played piano in the local theatres to provide musical accompaniment in the days of silent movies.

She will be remembered also as the pianist for the New Hamburg Club Swingers, a group which played many engagements over a wide area. They demonstrated school-learned calisthenics accompanied by the piano music, "En Route" march. One of her enjoyments over six decades was to play piano duets with her husband's cousin, the late Miss Louise (Babe) Ritz.

Loving mother of Dick & his wife Chris, Ernie & his wife Betty of New Hamburg, dear grandmother of Pam Ritz (Joey), Judy (Ted) Seyler, Bonnie (Stephen) May, Rick (Janice) Ritz, Bill (Kathryn) Ritz, John Ritz & his friend Betty. The Mill Fire

Early on the warm August 8 evening in 1902, while local residents were enjoying a variety program staged by a Chautauqua group at the local school yard, cries of "fire" and the sounding of the town bell could be heard to signal for help to fight a blaze.

Little Elena Betzner, whose father, Isaac, had been head miller at the local flour mill, had been taken to the evening program to mark her ninth birthday day.

Soon a column of thick smoke arose over the downtown area. This was a spectacular fire, for it was at the local flour and grist mill in the heart of the village. The large three-storey frame building was soon engulfed in flames and in a short time was razed to the ground. This was the mill built by William Scott in 1848, a half century before. It had a colourful history, having passed through the hands of a succession of owners and operators, and had been extensively damaged in the 1889 boiler explosion.

The economic loss was to affect not only the owners and employees but also the community as well, for it drew farmers and their families for miles around who shopped and transacted business in town as well as at the mill.

Mrs. Edward Pfaff, bride of New Hamburg's newest barber, who had recently moved to town, stood at the window of the couple's temporary home in the Queen's Hotel, (now 73-77 Peel Street) just a hundred meters from the mill. She watched with a mixture of apprehension and awe at the scene as flames and smoke billowed into the air, carrying sparks and embers over the buildings nearby.

Embers and burning shingles settled on nearby roofs, some of which began to smoulder. Residents
and building occupants busily carried pails of water to douse flames. New Hamburg's steam-powered fire engine Chugged valiantly, but to little avail. The frame building was doomed, and it burned to the foundation. The loss of the mill would have a definite impact on its patrons and the economy of the village as well.

Nagus.-Barbara (Cressman) Nagus was born in Waterloo, Ont. In Aug. 1913, she was married to George J. Nagus of Guernsey, Sask. She died April 19, 1918; aged 39 y. 9 m. 12 d. She leaves to mourn her loss a sorrowing husband, 4 small children, besides a number of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held April 23, 1918 at the Sharon Mennonite Church near Guernsey, Sask., by I. S. Rosenberger.

Honsberger, Minerva Ida, daughter of Aaron and Magdalena (Betzner) Cressman, was born in Waterloo, Ont., May 19, 1880; died at St. Catherines General Hospital, after a lengthy illness, Feb. 26, 1964; aged 83 y. 9 m. 7 d. On Jan. 4, 1911, she was married to Franklin F. Honsberger who died April 4, 1947. Surviving are 2 sons (Wilfred and Herbert), one daughter (Dorothy), one stepdaughter (Mrs. Carol Marcus), one stepson (Elton), one brother (Clifford), and one sister (Alvina - Mrs. Mahlon Clemens). Cressman - Lenora Cressman, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Cressman, who was born near New Dundee, Ont., and lived at the home of her sister, Mrs. Mahlon Clemens, Kitchener; died on Thursday Dec. 26, 1935; aged 49 y. 11 m. 17 d. She is survived by 2 brothers (Wilfred S. and Clifford I., both of Kitchener) and 4 sisters (Mrs. Franklin Honsberger of Beamsville, Mrs. Jerry B. Weber of Guernsey, Sask., Mrs. Oray I. Wills of Jordon, Ont., and Mrs. Mahlon Clemens of Kitchener). She was a faithful member of the First Mennonite Church. She is survived by a brother (Clifford). Also preceding her in death were five sisters and one brother. She was a member of First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, where funeral services were held on Nov. 7, in charge of Rufus Jutzi; interment in church cemetery.

CRESSMAN, Clifford D -- At the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Nov. 6, 1980, after a brief illness, Clifford D. Cressman, a resident of Fairview Mennonite Home, Cambridge and a formerly of Weber St. East, Kitchener, aged 84 years. Mr. Cressman was a life-long resident of the Twin City area. A member of First Mennonite Church. An employee of Uniroyal Company Ltd, -- General Products Division for 42 years, he retired in 1961. A son of the later Aaron Cressman and the former Magdalena Betzner. He was the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Elizabeth Swartz in 1978; by a brother Wilfred and by six sisters; Mrs. Barbara Nagus, Mrs. Minerva Honsberger, Mrs. Marie Weber, Lenorra Cressman, Mrs. Mabel Wills and Mrs. Alvina Clemens. Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, until noon on Saturday, when removal will be made to First Mennonite Church, for the funeral and committal service at 3 p.m. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Elmor Hofstetter Mrs. Elmor Hofstetter of Baden passed away at her residence early Thursday morning following a lengthy illness. She was the former Sylba Leona Betzner, and was born at Doon July 1st, 1887, a daughter of the late Moses B. Betzner and the former Leah Kolb. She was a member of Zion Evangelical UB Church, New Hamburg, and also of the W.SW.S. of the church. She is survived by her husband, to whom she was married at Kitchener October 4, 1920. Also surviving are two sons, Eugene of New Hamburg, Oray of Baden, a brother, Herbert V. Betzner of Grimsby and five grandchildren. She resided in Baden since her marriage. The remains are resting at the Futher Omand Funeral Home, New Hamburg where services will be held Sunday, January 10 at 2: 00 p.m. The Rev. F. Paul Erb will officiate and internment will follow in Wilmot Centre Cemetery.

Snyder, Mrs, Earle S. (Florence L.) - On Wednesday, November 29, 1978, at Fairview Mennonite Home, the former Florence Luella Cressman, aged 86 years.

Mother of Helen Elizabeth (Mrs. James Reusser) of Kitchener, Catherine Erlene (Mrs. Roger Seibert) of Pandora, Ohio; grandmother of Mark, Kristen and John Reusser, Ruth and David Siebert, sister of Stella Cressman of Kitchener. Predeceased by her husband Prof. Earle S. Snyder in 1973; two sisters, Laura (Mrs. Milton Cressman and Myra Cressman; her father, Ephriam Cressman and her mother, the former Susannah Betzner. Mrs. Snyder and her late husband had been residence of Guelph for over 45 years. In 1976, Mrs. Snyder moved to Fairview Mennonite Home. She was a charter member of Stirling Mennonite Church and the WMA.
Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, after 2 p.m. Friday until noon Saturday, then to Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church for funeral service at 2 p.m. Internment will be made in First Mennonite Cemetery.

Bauman.- Eleanor, daughter of Ozias and Lydia Ann Snyder, was born near Breslau, Ont., July 6, 1891; died on her 25th wedding anniversary, after a lingering illness, in the Turner Private Hospital, Elmire, Ont.; aged 51 y. 7 m. 14 d. She spent most of her life on the Snyder farm,, and only six months ago moved with her family to Elmira. In the year 1905 she confessed Christ as her Savior and united with the Cressman Mennonite Church. Feb. 20, 1918, she was united in marriage to Enoch Bauman, who, with 1 daughter (Erma Fern) , 1 son (Robert Lee), 2 sisters (Edith, Mrs. Abner Rady, New Hamburg, Ont.; Ada, Markham, Ont.), 1 brother (Elvin, missionary in the Argentine, S.A.) and many other relatives and friends mourn her untimely departure. Sister Bauman was a Christian of sterling character. She belonged to the rapidly declining group of Christians who not only kept steady and true in the faith, but make substantial progress in it as well. She was loyal to the doctrines of the Church, both by practice and testimony, and as far as she was able, never withheld her hand to help the work of the Church of her choice. She proved her worth as a Christian mother by her constant concern for the oncoming generation. We have every reason to believe she is at rest, with her loved ones gone on before, awaiting the glorious resurrection of the righteous, when our Lord comes back for his own. Funeral services Feb. 24 were conducted in the Elmira Funeral Home by Bro. Oliver D. Snider, and in the Cressman Mennonite Church by Bro. Oscar Burkholder. Text, II Tim. 2: 11 - 13, 19.
