Biographical sketch: Abraham M. Bowman (Jan. 14, 1874-Apr. 24, 1964) was the eldest son of Levi Bowman and Barbara Martin. On February 23, 1897 he married Catharine Brubacher (Aug. 13, 1873-Oct. 3, 1964). She was the daughter of Henry M. Brubacher (1838-1910) and Magdalena Algeiger (1843-1911). Abraham and Catharine had three children; only one, Henry, survived to adulthood.

Although an Old Order Mennonite, Bowman was never a farmer. He apprenticed at Elias Kreutzinger's from 1891-1894, and worked at H.J. Hall's in Waterloo until 1897. He and an uncle then set up a planing mill on the Heidelburg Road, but it burned in 1900. He then returned to work for H.J. Hall for several years, then for Charles Mueller Coopery until 1910. The family moved to Elmira in 1911 where he set up a contracting and building materials business. In this capacity he gained some contracts to dig and install parts of the new water system in the town. He began to work for Elmira Water Works in 1914, and then worked for the Elmira Public untility until 1947. He was superindentendent beginning in 1918, and manager of the Utility from 1932-1947. He worked for a time at the Preston P.U.C. until 1958 after they moved to Preston.

Bowman took many correspondence courses from the International Correspondence School in Scranton, Pennsylvania, even though his public school education had ended with grade 8. His studies eventually qualified him as a professional engineer in 1938 both for electrical and water work. This was of course very unusual for an Old Order Mennonite.

At the time of the division in the Old Order Mennonite community, Abraham and Catharine joined the Markham-Waterloo Mennonite Conference. They purchased their first car in 1937. He had been baptized Sept. 21, 1892 at the old Conestoga meetinghouse; Catharine was baptized Sept. 13, 1891 at Martin's meetinghouse in Waterloo.

Abraham M. Bowman, 90, of Fairview Mennonite Home, Preston, formerly of Elmira, died Friday at South Waterloo Hospital, Galt, after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 14, 1874, in Woolwich Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Levi B. Bowman. In 1897 he married Catherine Brubacher, who survives. A resident of Elmira for 40 years until 1961, he was a professional engineer and superintendent of the Elmira PUC.

He took up residence in Preston in 1931 and was associated with the Preston PUC for a number of years.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Henry of Preston; a sister, Mrs. Menno Wideman of Three Bridges and a brother, Simeon of Conestogo.

He was predeceased by a son, a daughter and two sisters.

The body was at the Stager-Barthel Funeral Home, Preston, until Sunday at 10 am when removal was made to the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, where the body rested until Monday noon.

The funeral was conducted Monday at 1 pm standard time at the Conestogo Mennonite Meeting House, Three Bridges. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

DANIEL M. BOWMAN

Daniel M. Bowman, 71, Elmira, died at the K-W Hospital Monday afternoon following an operation a week ago. Mr. Bowman was born in Woolwich Township, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Levi B. Bowman.

In 1902 he married Selina Bau- man and settled in Floradale where for many years he operated the sawmill and applebutter mill. Mrs. Bowman predeceased him in January, 1940.

In June 1941 he married Mrs. Elizabeth Martin of Indiana. They resided in Floradale until December, 1942, when they moved to Elmira.
Surviving are his wife; five sons, Paul, Ismael and Owen, of Floradale; Dan, of Elmira, and Elam, Kitchener; three daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Susanah) Wideman, Flora- dale, Mrs. John (Leah) Grosz, and Mrs. Urias (Sarah) Brubacher, Elmira; five step-children, residing in Michigan and Indiana; four brothers, Abraham and Levi Bowman, Elmira; Martin Bowman, Floradale, and Simeon Bowman, Hawkesville; one sister, Mrs. Menno (Elizabeth) Wideman,

Three Bridges, and 21 grandchildren. A private service will be conducted at the residence at 1 p.m. DST Thursday (today) followed by a public service at the North Woolwich Mennonite Church. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Bowman, Levi M., son of the late Levi B. and Barbara Bowman, was born Aug. 7, 1879, in Waterloo County, Ont.; passed away March11, 1958; aged 78 y.7 m. 4 d. On Oct. 27, 1903, he was married to Elizabeth Gingrich. This family union was blessed with three children, two of whom survive (Mrs. Lucinda Dettwiler, West Montrose, Ont.; and Joseph, Waterloo, Ont.). Also surviving are 2 brothers (Abraham, Preston, Ont.; and Simeon, Elmira, Ont.), one sister (Elizabeth-Mrs. Menno Wideman, Waterloo, Ont.), and 3 grandchildren. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death (Martin, Daniel, Solomon, and Leah). He was a lifelong member of the Mennonite Church and took a deep interest in all church activities. He served as a Sunday-school teacher for a number of years. Funeral services were conducted in the Elmira Church, March 14, in charge of Oliver D. Snider and Howard S. Bauman. Burial in the St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery.

BOWMAN, Henry B.

Professional Engineer called home to be with his Lord, Henry, son of the late Abraham and Catherine Brubacher Bowman of Elmira and Cambridge, age 91 years. He had been a resident of Cambridge, for many years and of Fairview Home, since 1982. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother and sister in infancy, his first wife, Ruby Hallman Bowman. He is survived by his second wife the former Edna Hunsperger. Henry was in the first graduating class of Elmira and District Secondary School after which he was apprenticed as a machinist at the Dominion Rubber Machinery Shop, where the late John A. Cressman, was his superior. During these years he also took International Correspondence courses to qualify as a professional engineer. He worked at Link-Belt in Elmira and J.C. Klaehn & Bernal Jones in Kitchener, before coming to the Canadian Office and School Furniture, where the late P. R. Hilborn was his employer and became his personal friend. At Fairview he took Whittling under the late William Walton. Other retirement interests were K-W Field Naturalists and he served as Secretary-Treasurer for the Waterloo Historical Society for a number of years. Church and foreign missions were very important to him and the Old Order, Mennonite, Bethany & Evangel Missionary and Wanner Mennonite all benefited by his support. A Private Graveside Service will be held at First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener. Friends will be received at the Fairview Home, Saturday, September 7th, 1991, from 7 - 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be conducted at Wanner Mennonite Church, Cambridge Sunday, September 8th, at 3: 00 p.m.

Sister-in-law of Grace Bowman, Lydian Kappes and Abram Metzger. Magdalena was the last surviving member of her family having been predeceased by her parents, Martin and Magdalena (Brubacher) Bowman; her eight brothers, Israel, Enos, Levi, Solomon, Tobias, Emmanuel, Martin and Tilman and her five sisters, Rebecca, Amanda, Catherine, Mary Ann and one sister in infancy. The family will receive their friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. At 9 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2007 transfer will be made to the Elmira Mennonite Church for funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ruth Anne Laverty and Pastor Steven Janzen officiating followed by interment in St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery. In her memory, donations to Mennonite Central Committee would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy.

PAUL BOWMAN

Paul Bowman, 52, of Floradale died of a heart attack Monday at his home. He had been in ill health six years.

Born in Floradale December 4, 1903, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Bow- man. He attended the Floradale Evangelical Brethren Church and was a Sunday school superintendent, teacher and class, leader during the past several years.

Surviving are his wife, the former Ella Arnold whom he married in Grassmere April 16, 1924; one son, Coleman of Elmira; four brothers, Ismael and Owen of Floradale, Daniel A. of Elmira and Elam of Mannheim; three sisters, Mrs. Herbert (Susanna) Wideman, Mrs. John (Leah) Grosz and Mrs. Urias (Sarah) Brubaker of Elmira, and one grandson. The funeral was conducted at the Floradale Evangelical United Brethren Church Thursday at 2:30 p.m., by Rev. A. M. Schlenker. Burial was in the Elmira Cemetery.

The body rested at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Thursday at 1 p.m., when removal was made to the church.

Mrs. Herbert Wideman, 52, formerly of Floradale, died Monday February 23, at 44 Church St., Elmira, after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Wideman, the former Susannah Bowman, was born in Floradale May 20, 1906. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel M. Bowman. Mrs. Wideman was a member of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church.

Surviving are her husband, a son, Jimmie of Elmira; two sisters Mrs. John Grosz, RR 3, Elmira; Mrs. Urias Brubacher, four brothers, Ismael and Owen, both of Floradale; Daniel of Elmira, Elam of Mannheim and two grand-daughters One brother, Paul, predeceased her in 1956.

The body was at the Dreising [sic] Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Thursday morning at 11 a. m. When removal was made to St. Jacobs Mennonite Church for memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Burial was in St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. Raymond Kramer officiated.

Went to meet her Lord peacefully, at Heritage House in St. Jacobs, on March 25, 2007, at the age of 77 years. Predeceased by her husband Alfred Knechtel in 1997 and her husband Roy Yanke in 2004. Dear mother of Sharon Leis (Bruce) of Moorefield, Charmaine McKay (Alvin) of Belmont, Wayne Knechtel (Cathy) of Bloomingdale and Mark Knechtel (Crystal) of Waterloo. Also survived by her step-children, Sandy Scott (Doug), Terry Yanke (Heather), Glenn Yanke (Sally), Stu Yanke (Chris) and Linda Morris. Grandmother of Murray Leis (Janette), James Leis, Robert Leis, Rachel McKay, Joshua Knechtel, Zackery Knechtel and Melody Knechtel; great-grandmother of Alyssa and Ashley Leis. Lovingly remembered by 12 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren. HORST, Paul Richard 1948 - 2015 After a courageous battle with cancer, Paul, of Eby Village, Kitchener, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at Freeport Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, at age 67. He was the beloved brother of Lauretta Martin of Elmira, Howard and Alice Horst of Hawksville, Daniel and Salema Horst of Gowanstown, Robert and Alma Horst of Thamesville, Ronald and Sharon Horst of Palmerston. He was a special uncle to his many nieces and nephews and always took an interest in their lives. He was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Maryann Horst, brother-in-law Clayton Martin and his nephew Dennis Horst. As a youth he gave his heart to the Lord. He was a member of First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. A special thank you to his Eby Village family, Dr. Stevens, the staff in I.C.U., and the sixth floor oncology at Grand River Hospital for their compassionate care during his illness. George went to be with his Lord on November 6, 2020, passing away peacefully at Caressant Care Nursing Home, Listowel, a month shy of his 90th birthday. He is survived by his wife MaryAnn of Floradale; children Jean Bowman of Kitchener, Kevin Bowman of Wawa, Harold (Jolene) Shoemaker of Elmira, Cecil (Lorna) Shoemaker of Waterloo, Glen (Verna) Shoemaker of Elmira, Paul (Lucy) Shoemaker of Montreal, Marj (Kirk) Pomerleau of Floradale, Joyce (Ben) Onyeka of Waterloo, Ken (Carol) Shoemaker of Wellesley, and Merle (Christina) Shoemaker of Kitchener. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Will be missed by brother-in-law Ivan Martin, and sisters-in-law Edna (Levi) Shantz, Matilda Martin, and Sarah Bowman. Predeceased by his parents Ishmael and Rachel (Martin) Bowman, first wife Eileen (Martin) Bowman, and brothers Sidney, Norman and Ephraim.

George was a longtime resident of Floradale, and enjoyed working at the feed mill for many years before starting his own landscaping and gardening business. George always wanted a big family, and got his wish when he remarried MaryAnn Shoemaker in 2001, growing his family from three to ten! He would often be seen on his riding mower or tractor; he always kept his furrows straight, and never met a cat he didn't love. He will be missed by all. Thank you to the staff at Caressant Care for their wonderful and compassionate care of George during his stay there.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 9, 2020 from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, November 10, 2020 from 9-10 a.m. at Crystal View Mennonite Church, 2167 Floradale Road, Floradale. Masks are mandatory. Please remain in your vehicle until a parking attendant invites you in. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. Peacefully on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at Grand River Hospital, Esther (Bowman) Martin of RR 2, West Montrose, at the age of 79.
Wife of the late Daniel Martin for five years. Mother of Rebecca and Edwin Martin of St. Jacobs, Aden and Lydia Martin of Matheson, Alvin and Irene Martin of Matheson, Isaiah and Anna Martin of Englehart, Henry and Maryann Martin of Val Gagne, Oscar and Ruth Martin of West Montrose. Also survived by 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Sister-in-law of Paul and Adeline Martin of Matheson. Sister of Anson Bowman of Kitchener, Aden and Elsie Bowman of Listowel, Elmeda and Harvey Martin of Mount Forest, Erla (Mrs. Amsey) Martin of Mount Forest, Herman and Lovina Brubacher of West Montrose, Melinda and Onias Martin of West Montrose.

Predeceased by her husband Daniel Martin (October 24, 2021), her parents Elam and Velina (Wideman) Bowman, her sisters Elizabeth (Mrs. Paul) Martin, Seleda (Mrs. Herman) Brubacher, brother-in-law Amsey Martin, daughter Hannah Martin, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and Daniel's first wife Lydia (Brubacher) Martin (2015).

Visiting will take place at the family home, 1230 Jigs Hollow Road, West Montrose, on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 from 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and 4 - 7 p.m. A family service will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at the home followed by burial and public service in Winterbourne Mennonite Cemetery.
